The White Knight Two carrying Scaled Composites Model 339 SpaceShipTwo VSS Unity about to take off for a test
    Fred T.

Nowhere in the world can you you see past, present and future so vividly. As the name suggests, the Mojave Air & Space Port has all three in evidence. First and foremost, the airport/spaceport is the worlds hub for the infant civilian space movement. Home to Virgin Galactic and it subsidiary The Spaceship Company, it is where they hope to kick a new type of travel called space tourism. Based on a a mothership carrying the suborbital spaceplane up to about 60000 feet then using the rockets on the spaceplane to place it in suborbit. We were fortunate to be able to see the Scaled Composites Model 348 White Knight Two (WK2) lift the Scaled Composites Model 339 SpaceShipTwo sub orbital vehicle on a test launch. The launch was successful and the space plane got as high as the mesosphere in this test before returning safely back tot he spaceport. It is also home to the Scaled Composites Stratolauncher. The aircraft is one of the worlds largest and has a maximum takeoff weight of 1.3 million pounds. It was a bit shy and did not come out of its hanger for our visit. It is an active airfield and you do get to see some interesting aircraft flying in and out. The past is a bit sadder however. The airfield is a boneyard as well. From the highway you can easily make out the tails of once proud aircraft waiting to be destroyed. They slowly get parted out to keep other planes flying and eventually the carcass is broken down for scrap. A few are maintenance in flight worthy condition. You will also see active planes being parked int he desert. Sometime the airlines has excess capacity, other times the price of fuel dictates that its not profitable to fly and it will wait till a drop occurs. The hot dry climate helps prevent corrosion and helps to preserve the air frames. Its another one of those spots that is cool to see for a bit, but unless you are really into aviation, its a quick stop and then move on.

So we were Staying at thousand trails Near Palmdale California. One of the campers told us about the aerospace stuff going out in Mojave so we decided to take a drive up and look. The kids are in civil air patrol and three of them have their student pilots licenses and they have a keen interest in anything to do with aerospace, astronauts, and just plain old flying. There is a nice old jet graveyard, however we were not allowed to go to it. Since there's a lot of research and development going on in Mojave, we kind of were not allowed to go into anywhere. At one point we saw a sign guests please check in building 210. So we went into the building and we were immediately met by some security guards, and some military personnel that were armed. We were informed that this place was off-limits LOL. We were escorted out. When I told them that sign said for visitors to check in, I was told that we were not that type a visitor. Lots of hush-hush stuff going on apparently. But the kids still had fun. The kids did get to see The Rotary Rocket Roton display at Legacy Park along with the SpaceShip One and Voyager replicas. They were on display near some tesla charging stations. Just before leaving we found the Viyager café. It's kind of funny because above the door, saying Aviation spoke in here. It's quite funny since my kids are all in the Aviation area, there's a lot of Aviation spoken but I do not understand. What about the only building we were allowed to enter was the spaceport itself. There is a really tiny, and when I say tiny I mean like really small gift shop. It was a secretary, and to the right of her desk was a table with some items, and as you walk in the door there were some sweatshirts and T-shirts. There are also stickers, decals, keychains etc. Very expensive as you would imagine. For the Cafe...Unfortunately the café was closing when we went in, the waitress was extremely nice and allowed me to sit and have some water while cleaning up. I think it was about 110° outside. He also offered us a couple of large to go cups of water. A table next to me had some food and it looked really good, however I cannot comment on the deliciousness of it. I was able to get some pictures of the menu for any who are interested. The menu is aeronautically-inspired.

In a time when human existence is changing at an unknowable pace, this is a marker. Simply driving around the Mojave, you notice that the evolving land itself is metaphor for human resolve, some of the most inhospitable land on earth now redefined by transforming its inherent problems into sustainable opportunities. Too much heat and sun actually means abundant energy. A lot of empty space actually means you can land your spaceship here. Where most see nothing, some see everything I mean come on, it's America's first Spaceport and Airport. Oh yeah Spaceship 1 is currently here.

A huge section of this airport is a graveyard for planes, commercial and cargo airliners, old jets & helicopters that have done their time in the skies or have been recalled and grounded for life. No access is granted to see them up close unless you're there for the yearly air-show.

Two aircraft's we went by during the tour.

We took a tour of the boneyard a couple of years ago. It was $10.00 a person and photography was prohibited. The town of Mojave is small. It almost look like the airport was the town. You would walk outside of a McDonald's and there would be a 747 on the other side of the fence.

Awesome reasonably priced food, nice views of the aircraft flying around - I once saw the experimental Stratolaunch flying around the airport while having breakfast - The waitress is super nice, efficient, funny and friendly. Their salmon sandwich and 1000 dollar burger are delicious and nicely presented. I always come to this place when in Mojave because it is well worthy.

Mojave airport is the new Edwards AFB for exciting flight testing. It's the Silicon Valley of the New Space industry. It's heaven for dreamers builders pilots and rocketeers. Come here every third Saturday of the month to see plane fly-in and displays. Have lunch at the voyager restaurant and watch planes taking off and landing. I heard there are more actions going on on weekdays. Take a tour in the aerospace junk yard where you have all the big Boeing jets parking there.... I love this middle-of-no-where!

We were driving along the highway and saw the planes in the distance and decided to go take a look. Once we pulled in, it was a matter of minutes before we were approached by security wondering who we were, but more importantly making sure we were not taking pictures. We said we just wanted to see the planes. Whereupon he told us to go down to frontage road for the best look at the planes we could take pictures of.

    Where the magic happens.

BFL has been at 8-12 flights a day since the America West-American Airlines merger. About half the flights are big jets and half smaller regional jets. Things to watch - 4 of the flights depart with 75 minutes 05:15 to 6:30 , so things bunch up. If checking bags, 75 minutes before flight time, carry on only 50 minutes. As few flights are spread out , the rest of the day it is not uncommon to find no airport personnel at the counter, and no way to summon them. When it's close to flight time, the gate agents go inside the building. The only sure way is to come to the counter 30 to 90 minutes before a flight departure. (Really BFL- use should have some type of call system so airport or airline personnel know someone needs attention. ) For drop off one gets 15 minutes free parking! Short and long term parking rates are much better than LAX . I've had good luck with car rental, as long as you reserved. Walks ins are hit or miss. Small planes get delayed more than large ones and last 2-3 years my on time experience is good. Prices to my destinations are closer to LAX than ever. Certainly markets and destinations work well, others do not. With less frequency than LAX , if there is a tight connection I will opt to book through LAX for more flexibility. Food and bev services are minimal.

Since we'd be there for only a few days we flew Southwest Airlines instead. Daughter #1 lives in the Valley. I live in OC so we both decided to take Amtrak and meet at Hollywood Burbank Airport. I usually fly out of Long Beach LBX or John Wayne Airport SNA in Irvine. Hollywood Burbank Airport was like a step back in time. The one story sprawling terminal reminded me of a California mission. The interior appeared to be original circa 1950s. No long walk to check-in or to TSA check point. Shorter walk to the gate. What a throwback. What convenience. Upon our return, baggage claim boasts 2 turnstiles. And yet the airport, on a Tuesday and again on Thursday, was a buzz with foot traffic. Masses of travelers coming and going. We enjoyed the intimacy of the airport. And have definitely added it to our preferred list of airports for local travel.

Excluding my hour-long wait to check my bag because I'm pretty sure that's an airline issue and not the airport's responsibility... Hiring such rude staff has to be intentional, given how consistent and common they were. While getting through security I asked if anything had to be taken out of my backpack and they said "If you're in that line, then yes", with no instruction on what to actually separate. About 5 minutes later, just before my backpack went through the machine, they told me to separate my electronics and take off my sweatshirt (and at this point, there weren't any convenient bins because the line had obviously moved). The next TSA agent told my partner he forgot to remove a Nintendo Switch, and threw his backpack (with the Switch still inside it) back onto the conveyer line (literally, threw it a few feet). There were other experiences before and after that, but the short version is this: the airport is just a small building of inconsiderate workers doing the absolute minimum who condescend you and your property.

Also, quick side note Terminal B is also Terminal 4. This can create confusion at times if your boarding pass says Terminal B and it does not show on the LAX maps online. Why this is, I do not know, but it's a thing. There are also wide disparities in amenities at certain terminals and gates compared to others. For example, if you happen to find yourself in the vary isolated area of gates 45- 48 in Terminal 4, the only places to grab food are a market or a hotdog vendor, so you may want to venture all the way to the main terminal to grab food. Speaking of grabbing food, no matter where you eat at LAX, be prepared to throw down at least $40 per person. This is at the casual eateries, not even the sit down restaurants. The restroom facilities are fine and are in various stages of improvement, but there could be more restrooms spread throughout to alleviate some of the lines. The car rental situation at LAX is also easy to navigate which is another plus and is very fast. Overall, LAX is pretty good considering how busy it is, but high prices at eateries and pockets of construction make it slightly annoying. It doesn't come close to the calm and elevation of say a Changi or Doha, but it works with what it's got. Terminal 4 is about as close to nice as it gets, but for a Global Alpha City like LA, the airport still has a long way to go to bring it to where is should be.

Unfortunately I avoid flying into or out of LAX as much as possible for a number of reasons. 1st of all it's a madhouse 24/7/365. 2ndly there's constant construction, detours, closures, and most importantly chaotic traffic. 3rd the homeless are everywhere and a constant issue but the city attorney's office tells staff that there's nothing that can be done about them. I'm curious how this will be dealt with or ignored in the upcoming world cup in 2026, the super bowl in 2027 and especially the Olympics in 2028. 4th LAX executive management cut the custodial staff 20 years ago and more recent executives have never restored the custodial staff to levels where they can reasonably keep the airport clean, especially the restrooms. This is exacerbated by the strange division of custodial responsibility between LAX custodians, airline custodians, and contract custodians which leads to all 3 groups often seeing something that needs cleaning but it's not their responsibility so they walk right past. This leaves passengers and sometimes even employees thinking that they just don't care. Long story short, I fly through LAX when I have to or the flight is significantly cheaper but it will never be my airport of choice.

The Southern California Logistics Airport is based on the former George Air Force Base which was active from 1941 to 1992. The airport has no commercial passenger service and is designed for business, military, and freight use. International cargo flights can land here as well due to its "foreign trade zone status". It is also home to several aerial firefighting units etc. and runway 17/35 at 15000 feet is the second largest public runway in the US. Following the grounding of 737 MAX's, Southwest elected to park their entire fleet here pending resolution of the software and flight safety issues that resulted in two crashes. What draws plane nuts to Victorville is the boneyard by and large. There is a large variety of mostly large aircraft that are either being stored (the hot dry climate is ideal) or being dismantled. Row after row of once proud airlines are lined up awaiting their fate's. Depending on how hard core you are you can make out the livery of current and often defunct airlines that have moved on. There are a few mysteries like the near new 787 parked and stored for more than a year. I could not get the tail numbers, but it may be an early production model that is too heavy for commercial use. Beyond the allure of seeing the planes there is not much else to do here. That being said, the city of Victorville has plenty of options for gas and eating, but unless there is a specific aviation event or your waiting for a particular plane to arrive, there is not much else going on at SCLA.
