If I could give them zero stars, I would. The food is absolutely horrible. I used to go to Border Cafe all the time, as I loved the way they did their fajitas. Well, everything has changed. I ordered the chicken fajitas with no peppers, only to be told that they coudn't accomodate that request. Apparently they don't cut their own onions & peppers anymore, it comes in as a mix. I'm sorry, but if someone orders no peppers, accomodate them. The fajitas came out not sizzling and stuck to the cast iron skillet. Chicken was lukewarm so it was sitting in the kitchen for a bit. The tortillas used to be in a basket wrapped in a napkin to keep them warm & soft. Not anymore. They came on the skillet with the lukewarm chicken & they were hard around the edges. More evidence of food just sitting around. I loved the chicken fajitas there, that place was what made me even like fajitas. Unfortunately, they have lost me as a customer. They've even changed the way the do the tortilla chips. I don't think they're homemade anymore. They taste like they were dumped out of a bag into a basket. Came for dinner with family. There was a 30-40 minute wait and that was to be expected. We stood in the bar area and waited until we received a text. Finally our table was ready and we were seated, however, our server didn't show up for another 10-15 minutes. For appetizers we ordered guacamole and two orders of the shrimp. For dinner we ordered the chicken fajitas. When our food arrived I told the server we needed plates. She said okay and we waited and waited. I looked over and she was taking another tables order. She saw me looking and finally brought our plates. Overall, the wait wasn't bad and we enjoyed the food. However, the service could have been better. I'm sorry it took me so long to discover what is probably one of the best restaurants in the area. This place is unique with the whole idea of merging Tex-Mex style food with Cajun food. You walk in and the aromas make you really hungry. It's a lively atmosphere but not too loud and we came on a weekend. I had chicken enchiladas which were perfectly seasoned, tender and savory, delicious rice that seemed to be a Cajun medley including onions and peppers, and hearty black beans. This food is super filling so make sure you come hungry! My husband had the blackened chicken Caesar salad and he loved it. There were so many other things on the menu that we wanted to try. We're definitely coming back! Service was fast and friendly. Haven't been to Borders in over 3 years or so because they changed the menu a lot during covid and I no longer found anything I liked. However, my family and I decided to give them another chance today 01/17/26 and WOW they have certainly won us back. They updated their menu adding old favorites along with some new ones and I can say with 1000% certainty we will be back! Not only was the food delicious ( we had a mix of old favorites and new items) but the service was also impeccable. The carne asada jim bowie style will have me coming back weekly its SO GOOD !! First time having these salmon tacos and they were really good. I usually get the same thing for the nearly 2 decades I been going here which are the gulf coast seafood enchiladas but decided to try something different. The only reason I do not give 5 stars anymore is because the hospitality is not as good as it once was. Our server did his job but was not very hospitable neither was the hostess. I have been here a few times over the years pre-pandemic. We tried this place again for a very late lunch, just to spice it up. The chips and salsa were very good and our server made sure we had an ongoing supply. The Cajun fried chicken salad was great and I am glad I took the server's suggestion of ranch dressing and it went well with the fried chicken pieces. Sat at the bar for lunch, the bartender promptly took my order but they had no sweet tea, it has apparently been removed from the menu. She then proceeded to dump chemicals or something into the dishwasher down on the floor for 5 mins. I asked for hot sauce and she said all they had was Tabasco, very disappointing for a Mexican Restaurant. She was doing the dishwasher thing, helping guests, serving food and loudly eating fries from a plate behind the bar all without washing her hands. I was just generally icked out. I have been patronizing Border Cafe, which I would affectionately call 'EAT' because of their large neon sign emblazoned with the word, for many years. I started becoming concerned with the quality of their food offerings during the pandemic, when I would exclusively order food from them online. I gave them a pass because it was the pandemic after all and lots of eateries were suffering because of supply chain issues and a drop off in patronage. However, as things slowly started opening back up, post-pandemic, I gave them a chance to redeem themselves, eating at this location's outdoor tent. Sadly the quality only marginally improved and I could see the portion sizes being impacted. Fast forward to Monday, March 31, 2025. I had a taste for their gumbo and hadn't been there in quite some time. So I ordered a cup with my meal. It was delicious! So, I also order a dinner portion of the gumbo to go. The order was a little over $10. Tonight, Wednesday, April 2, 2025, I was all set to throw down on my gumbo. When I opened up the bag I was floored. They put the gumbo in a liquid pint container, but it barely filled half the container. Needless to say I was not only disappointed, but I was angry! This is absolutely ridiculous! I paid $10 for this?! Where is the heck is the value?! I know shrinkflation is a real thing, but this is out of control. This situation made me so annoyed that I had to log into Yelp and post this review. I am so tired of businesses short changing loyal customers just to save a buck. I cannot tell a lie, this place used to be 5-stars in my opinion, but something has changed. This week we visited Border Cafe. We were so excited to return, as it's been a favorite of ours for years. However, based off this latest experience, I may rethink my next visit. To start, our waiter was obviously inexperienced in the service industry. He was unfamiliar with basic drink orders, inattentive, and became defensive at a certain point after we asked for basic things (water, sharing plates, limes for our modelos) etc. Sorry, but these are not big things to ask for. I ordered the blackened fish tacos (which come with a side of rice and beans), as well as the Jambalaya Skillet, which was advertised to feed "2-3 people". Those were Border Cafes words, not my own. Intrigued, I ordered it. What I got was Jambalaya subbed for the rice and beans. When I asked if the additional side was coming, our waiter became defensive. Instead of trying to fix the situation, he made it my fault, instead of owning up to the fact that perhaps he misunderstood. I need to mention though, his excuse was invalid because the only sides allowed to be subbed are written in red, above other extraneous side offerings. The Jambalaya was written in black, therefor not included, therefor it should have been known to be an additional side. Whatever. Before I left, I asked for a Jambalaya Skillet to go. I have not touched it, as I wanted to document the portion that Border Cafe advertises as being enough for "2-3 people". You tell me if this is enough Jambalaya for 2-3 people.... (Hint - it's not). Unfortunately the last 2-3 visits here were very disappointing. This used to be our #1 place to go. The food quality has changed dramatically in my opinion and not in a good way. We took our friends there last evening and our server never smiled nor was he engaging. He was impatient and made us like a burden rather than a customer. The gentleman who brought our food out from the kitchen was equally uninviting. I got fajitas. In the past they would come out hot and steamy with the cast iron skillet hot. Unfortunately this time, like our last, it came out room temperature and the shrimp was actually cold. Not as important, the salsa and chips were not good at all. Our hope is that everything improves so we can once again consider Borders Cafe in Christiana our favorite place to eat. I like the food at Border Cafe. They serve very large portions of soft drinks which I enjoy with my meal which (like most places now) charge about $3.00 with unlimited refills). They aren't losing money on the soft drinks. So today, I asked for a to go cup as I only drank a small amount of my soft drink. They do not have to go cups was the answer - not the waiters fault. So I'm wondering if I called ahead for a take out meal would they say "we don't have take out cups" and I wouldn't be able to purchase a drink along with my meal. My family and I stopped here last Friday. We haven't been here in years so we figured we would go. We noticed that they had a much smaller menu and apparently that's due to covid. It didn't bother me, but I know some people in my family were quite disappointed. I ordered the frozen strawberry margarita and it was so tasty! We also got guacamole for an appetizer and their recipe hasn't changed. Still as amazing as I remember! For my entree, I ordered the cheese and green chili enchiladas. They were absolutely delicious! The rice was good and had a nice kick to it, but the beans on the side were even better! As far as service, the hostess and our waitress were both amazing. I wish I would've gotten their names so I could give them a shoutout in the review. The staff should really consider wearing name tags. Overall, this is a good place to fill up your belly. But keep in mind it definitely is Tex Mex and not authentic Mexican food (which It's funny reading the bad reviews on here about people complaining about its inauthenticity when it literally says TEX MEX on the side of the building). Gumbo was highly salted. She ordered empanadas, took one bite and found them disgusting. My wife ordered chicken tacos that barely had a teaspoon of chicken in them. My fish tacos were a total joke. The piece of fish in the taco was about half the size of my thumb. And to top it off, the jambalaya must have been sitting in the kitchen forever. Love love love this place. My first time visiting was during Cinco de Mayo. I didnt get to try the food then but of course I had drinks and it was a good time. I loved how they had the tint set up outside with the dj. It was a good time. I then went back and dined in a few times, including yesterday. I can say, this place NEVER disappoints. They have thee BEST steak fajitas I have ever had. The steak is seasoned to perfection. I usually also get a cup of gumbo. It is soooo good but since I stopped eatting pork, I had to stop ordering. I now replace the gumbo with the chicken pastelitos as my appetizer. They are amazing. My few favorite addicition for my entree is the blackended chicken ceasar salad. I know a salad may sound like a boring choice for an entree but trust me, this salad is the bomb! I had it yesterday when I went in person and for take out the day before. My sister tried the Seafood Enchiladas. We've never had enchiladas before but the menu description sounded good, so she tried it. Im glad she did because it was delicious! Good food, I can recommend the blackened salmon tacos! Good service, not rushed at all and very accommodating.

Nothing like the classic Border Cafe, cold beer, margaritas. However, a few things to note is waiters and waitresses wear chef coats which clashes with atmosphere and their positions. They dont move anywhere and remain in the middle of the room standing, almost as if they aren't allowed to go anywhere. In turn, the staff check on you very frequently making it a bit annoying. Food was okay, tacos had onion rings on it and the rice was very spicy, flavor was not good. Time to make some changes. read more

We really wanted to like this restaurant, because I had heard a lot of good things about it from friends and colleagues. We were bringing our small dog and we had called them a ahead of time and they told us it was okay. We sat at one of the outdoor seats, and our dog barked a few times. The waiter then told us that we could not eat there anymore. So we were like okay we understand, and then converted our order to takeout. When it comes to paying, despite our order being takeout, the lowest amount of tip option was still 18%. I tried to choose "other amounts" on the machine and it didn't let me. The food was really not as good as I thought it would be. We would rather have gotten el pique takeout instead. Tacos were dry and boring. Their jambalaya was not flavorful either. Overrated.
