I had heard good things about Bopomofo and finally got to try it recently. We came for a late lunch and it was surprisingly busy on a weekday afternoon, we had to sit at the side table/counter (it seemed like most of the people sitting at the tables were studying). The restaurant was very modern and clean, and the staff was friendly for the most part. We ordered the mapo tots, honey walnut shrimp burger, and the weekday deal which included a regular milk tea and popcorn chicken. I really liked the popcorn chicken, it was very crispy (it's nice they give a choice of white or dark meat for the popcorn chicken). I also really enjoyed the mapo tots, it was a creative and tasty dish. The shrimp patty in the burger was also good/juicy, but it didn't seem to be anything special (and also seemed overpriced and a bit small). Otherwise we enjoyed the food/milk tea here!

Let's go grab a fun and creative drink? I'm down! Bopomofo Cafe is known for creative Taiwanese-inspired drinks and snacks, offering milk teas, fruit teas, specialty coffee drinks, and fun combinations you don't usually see at typical boba shops. This location sits between two major retailers, Costco and Target, but their part of the parking lot is rarely packed which makes visiting pretty easy. There were already a good amount of people inside when we arrived. Some were sitting and working remotely, others chatting with friends, and a few waiting for their orders. The main drink menu is displayed on the back wall near the register. There's also a QR code posted along the line for ordering and laminated menus near the counter. They offer a wide range of drinks and a lot of them sounded interesting, but the one that stood out the most to me was the corn milk with strawberry sorbet. I also added egg pudding to my drink. My husband ordered the brown sugar buzz. The employee helping us was very kind and made sure to adjust sweetness and ice levels the way most cafes do. The next part is really the only reason this visit loses a star. Our drinks took quite a while to come out. I'm usually a patient person but it seemed like there was only one employee making drinks. We waited for a while and the cafe itself runs pretty warm. With the large windows letting in natural light, it heated up quickly. Eventually our name was called and we picked up our drinks. One thing I immediately noticed is how much they care about presentation. The drinks looked amazing and luckily they tasted just as good. My corn strawberry milk was incredible. It was perfectly sweet and definitely corn lover approved. The strawberry sorbet sits on top so you have to give it a minute to melt and mix into the drink. Once it does, the flavors come together really nicely. I honestly hope they make a corn matcha in the future because that would be a showstopper. The egg pudding topping I could have done without though. It lacked flavor and mostly added a mild sweet gelatinous texture. I was hoping it would add more creaminess. The brown sugar buzz was one of the better coffee drinks I've had and I'm normally more of a tea person. It was slightly sweet but the espresso still came through nicely so it didn't just taste like milk. Overall super tasty drinks! I hope they work on reducing wait times soon.

Came here for some food recently and ordered the Taiwanese spicy chicken sandwich (regular and spicy) and the mapo tots. Everything tasted pretty good but the main thing that threw us off was that the bun on the Taiwanese spicy chicken sandwich was sweet. Inside the store was really nice and clean with a couple places to sit down and eat. The workers were also pretty nice and the food came out quickly! I'll be back to try some more of their menu items and drinks

Their meal deal plan gives you a free drink when you purchase food, which is an amazing incentive to come out when you really want to stay inside! There are plenty of parking spots as well as free WiFi. Table seating is pretty limited since many come here to study, but there are outdoor options as well. The music in the store makes dining in here feel lively. My friend and I got the spicy and regular popcorn chicken meals along with their assam milk tea. The baristas were super informative and provided great suggestions for sugar and ice levels on their drinks. Both chicken were juicy on the inside with light crisp outside. I was impressed by their thai basil and chili aioli, which paired well with the side salad and chicken. The creamy savory sauces make the chicken melt right in your mouth. The assam milk tea had a strong caramel flavor that wasn't too overwhelming. It served as a nice light pairing for my meal. I am always excited to see what they are innovating at Bopomofo and I will be coming back soon!

Bopomofo pulled me in with their Honey Walnut Shrimp burger (a must when ordering Chinese). Located in between the Costco Business center and Target, it is the perfect place for a post-errand treat. I ordered the Assam milk tea (unsweetened) and the burger. The milk tea was standard. I appreciated that they not only had lactose free milk/oat milk for no charge, but that the tea itself wasn't overly milky. The burger didn't quite live up to the hype for me, but it was still really good. The shrimp wasn't chewy at all, there was a nice crunch with the walnuts, and a tiny bit of heat with the jalapeño. It just didn't scream "honey walnut shrimp" to me. Service is friendly and there is ample seating-seemed like a lot of people were studying. I'll probably be back after my next business center trip!

Bopomofo Cafe is an elevated version of the traditional Taiwanese tea & snack shop. The beverages are well crafted, tea forward, and unique in their combinations. I loved the honey walnut shrimp burger! The fried shrimp patty is juicy, topped with sliced jalapeños and honey walnut crumble, and sandwiched in a chewy toasted bun. The lu rou rice bowl is comforting and familiar, and they give a very big portion. Service is quick, food is prepped fresh, and there are plenty of small tables around to chow down on. I wouldn't recommend coming with large groups unless you grab & go. Parking is easy and plentiful.

-the spicy popcorn chicken was solid. they give you the option for white v dark meat & it comes w spicy mayo. we would've liked more basil leaves tho -we liked that the cashier walked us thru all the ordering options -we like that they often offer discounts. so even tho the popcorn chicken was 2x the price of other places, we got a guava wang free w $20 (last month it was a milk tea) & 20% off a guava oolong. if you check online they offer flash sales as well -the guava oolong was good, it tasted of real guava. i liked it better before stirring, as the guava became much more subtle compared to the tea, but that's just personal preference -the guava wang was basically those guava hard candies in beverage form, which i liked, but since you can't adjust the sweetness, it was too sweet for me personally -w the orange wang, you actually do want to go 100% sweet to approximate orange bang -sorry to say, the hainan chicken tacos weren't our fav. they tasted fine but the chicken was wet & mushy which made the taco soggy. i liked the lil crispy rice bits but they weren't enough to save the texture -for a place w a lot of food options, they don't have much seating - much of the indoor space is dedicated to a standing waiting area, but there are a few outdoor tables

Bopomofo feels like the restaurant equivalent of someone who discovered the hipster movement on a delay. Everyone else already did the reclaimed wood, the ironic merch, the "we're just a humble neighborhood spot with a PR team" aesthetic. Bopomofo rolls in like it just unlocked that level and wants you to notice. The Taiwanese chicken sandwich is good. It's fine. It's competent. But the buzz around it has that suspicious, slightly inflated quality, like people are praising it because they feel they're supposed to. The sandwich itself tastes like it's auditioning for a role in a trend that peaked three years ago. Crunchy chicken, aromatic seasoning, a bun that behaves itself. All respectable. None revolutionary. But this place isn't really about the food. It's about the adventure of documenting the food. You don't go to Bopomofo to eat. You go to curate. You go to capture the moment where the sandwich sits at a flattering angle in natural light. You go to prove you were there, participating in the cultural moment that everyone insists is happening even if the moment itself feels a little manufactured. The vibe inside is less "culinary destination" and more "content studio with a kitchen attached." Every corner looks designed for a soft‑focus portrait of your lunch. Every plate feels engineered to be held aloft for a photo before it ever touches your mouth. It's the kind of place where you can practically hear the ambient hum of influencers warming up their ring lights. And that's the thing. The sandwich is good enough, but the hype is doing the heavy lifting. People talk about it like it's a pilgrimage, but the experience lands closer to a field trip for your camera roll. You leave full, sure, but you also leave with the faint suspicion that the meal was secondary to the performance of having had it.

Absolutely love their bala matcha drink, strong matcha flavor and the guava complements it well. The food is also really good with crispy chicken and balanced flavors. A decent amount of indoor seating but can be difficult to grab a seat if you're planning on staying for a while. Can order ahead to save time with the line.

Love the seasonal changes! Matcha guava is a great addition but the corn drink will always be the go to here.

    Lychee Pear Blossom
    Monica N.

Disappointed with my experience this time. I've been here before and ordered the lychee pear blossom, which was delicious, so we ordered it again expecting the same quality. Unfortunately, it tasted completely off this visit, bland and bitter, nothing like before. I asked one of the cashiers if they could fix it, but he came back and said they couldn't because we had already taken a sip. I understand sanitary policies, but there's really no way to know a drink doesn't taste right unless you try it first. Instead of offering a remake or a replacement, they handed us a small cup of syrup to sweeten it ourselves, which honestly didn't help and felt like a lazy solution. No effort was made to remake the drink or offer an alternative, which was frustrating and disappointing, especially since this is a drink I've enjoyed here in the past. Probably won't be ordering it again.

I had to come here once I found this place as I grew up going to Chinese School every Sunday where I learned bopomofo. What is bopomofo? IYKYK... Im actually quite fond of the system bopomofo as it helped me as a kid to really learn Chinese characters. It was a time in my life where I had quality time with my mom. My father doesn't know bopomofo as well as my mom, so it was a special language I share with mom that my dad couldn't be part of. In any case, Bopomofo Cafe was open on Xmas and I really enjoyed coming here after visiting Mitsuwa (which was also open on xmas) and gave their hojicha latte (hot) a try. It was a bit more grainy than I like and I like a very smooth hojicha, so this was just a tad bit off the mark for me. I decided to stop in again to give them another try and ordered an iced hojicha corn latte (50% sweet) and also a heritage lurou fan. The hojicha corn latte unfortunately was too sweet for me and not sure I liked the hojicha & corn combo. I may give this another try next time I am back and ask for 25% sweetness or I might move onto something else. The heritage lurou fan was delicious, this was 5 stars! The pork belly was cooked very well, melts in your mouth and the right flavors! I loved this dish and will definitely be back for this! The other thing I really like about this place is they use lactose free milk as their "normal" milk and that made me pretty happy. I have lactose intolerant issues and can't enjoy certain dairy, but this place just made this a non issue for me! Thanks! The space is really nice and you could linger a bit here and get work done or just hang out. Its kind of dangerous this place is right behind Costco's but its a good location with ample parking. Id definitely come back again! I told my mom about this place and she got a kick out of the name! Me too! I deducted one star because the hojicha latte offerings just didn't work for me.

Bopomofo is easily the best spot for popcorn chicken in San Diego! The interior is spotless and has a great vibe for studying, and the outdoor seating is a nice touch for sunny days. I highly recommend the BA-LA Matcha, a perfect balance of guava and matcha. The staff is incredibly friendly and the menu is full of unique, customizable drinks. I do appreciate their service policy. they really seem to care about getting your order right. I have my eye on the Nori Fish Sandwich for my next visit :P

My favorite salads are the Grapevine and Duck Cranberry. For sides I recommend the potato salad and tomato basil bisque. The aioli they use is to die for -- can't hurt to get a side of it with any sandwich! The restaurant is situated on the corner of Park Blvd. and Polk Ave. (more generally, it's on the strip of Park Blvd. between University Ave. and El Cajon Blvd.). On the first visit, Zack provided exceptional care and attention while helping navigate food allergies. Zack took the time to carefully check ingredients, double-check preparations, and personally come back out to verify everything to ensure safety. That level of care made the experience feel genuinely welcoming and stress-free. The chicken sandwich was fresh, satisfying, and thoughtfully balanced. Juicy chicken, ripe tomatoes, creamy avocado, and a bright splash of oil and vinegar came together beautifully on Big Front Door's roll, which had a great texture and held everything together well. The flavors were clean and vibrant. A little extra salt would have pushed it over the top for a salt-lover, but that came down to personal preference rather than any shortcoming. A dining companion ordered the avocado sandwich and could not stop raving about it, praising both the flavor and the freshness. The outdoor seating area deserves special mention. The shaded space was perfect as I do have sun allergies, especially for anyone who prefers relief from direct sun. The care taken in food preparation added an extra layer of comfort and trust. The second visit somehow raised the bar even higher. Micah went above and beyond to accommodate physical ability needs with patience, attentiveness, and genuine kindness. That effort did not go unnoticed and made the experience feel deeply respectful and inclusive. The roasted chicken sandwich ordered on the second visit was phenomenal. The roasted chicken was tender, savory, and full of depth, elevating the sandwich even further. Adding a bit of extra salt brought all the ingredients into perfect harmony, making every bite more satisfying than the last. This sandwich has officially earned a spot as a new favorite sandwich. Big Front Door was amazing not just for delicious, thoughtfully prepared food, but for the people who work there. Zack and Micah created an environment where care, kindness, and respect were clearly prioritized. No moment felt rushed, dismissive, or uncomfortable. At no point did anyone make the experience feel like a burden or inconvenience. A sincere thank-you also goes to the team members who prepared the food. Even without knowing names, the care taken to keep guests safer while serving delicious nourishment was evident and deeply appreciated. Big Front Door comes highly recommended for the flavorful sandwiches, the shaded outdoor space, the welcoming atmosphere, outstanding customer service, and the genuine kindness shown at every action.

This is the kind of classic deli sandwich that hits the spot every time simple, fresh, and packed with flavor. If you're in the area, I highly recommend checking them out!

I was really excited about going to Ike's to try out their sandwiches but to assert that my…read moreexpectations were not only destroyed but put to shame for ever thinking highly of them would be an understatement. I came in and immediately the woman working in the front I could tell was rude and radiating negative energy. I am witnessing a common theme about this with many of the other people who have left negative reviews about this establishment. You guys also seem to reply and pretend like you resolve the issue but there have been multiple review follow-ups where people claim you guys do not actually make up for the horrible service. Anyway, I walk in and immediately I have to wait a long time to order and I can tell that the guy in front of me has been there a while already. Finally, I place my order and the lady is so awfully rude. Every answer I had for her questions made me feel that I had done something wrong even though I was very nice and just there for a simple thing: to get a sandwich. I usually greet people and ask how they are doing but she got directly to business. I understand that she was busy but she was immediately unwelcoming. "What kind of bread would you like?" (I do not see the bread on the menu when I immediately look up so I reply, "white (I will admit there are many different types of bread but I did not know what they have and usually when I order somewhere I just say white and they know what I am talking about or politely ask for clarification) *she rolls her eyes* "french, sourdough, Dutch?" Then, she asked me if I wanted lettuce and tomato. I replied, "just lettuce please" and again she makes me feel dumb for just ordering. I ask if the sandwich comes with mayonnaise because it was not listed but there were additional items on it and she says that they do not have mayonnaise but another sauce as if mayonnaise is a crazy request. "Can I get a name for the order?" "Jessica" "Jessica?" like my name is ugly or something and not like she could not hear me. At this point I am picking apart everything that she uttered but seriously such an unhappy woman with no hospitality skills. Trust me on this and either experience it yourself or read some other 1-star reviews if you do not believe me. She then walked away as I was still paying so I could not even ask for a receipt or anything. This was essentially the extent of my direct experience with the woman in the front but I witnessed more things happening to other customers while I was waiting for my sandwich for a really long time. Apparently an order kept getting rung up and people kept coming in trying to pick it up but it had already been picked up and the woman would say "communicate this. someone already picked it up" with a huge attitude like it was their fault there was a glitch in the system. I also took notice that there was a big order for 4:30 and when the order was finished, one of the male workers went over and served himself a drink from the soft drinks dispenser and when he was handing the woman all of the many bags, he took a break to take a drink out of his cup. I think it also important that I add she had already been given 5-6 bags and was caring a lot and he was not coughing and desperately needed water and I do not even think there was water in the cup. I will also say though that all of the customers waiting were very friendly and understanding that they were busy and I am too but there was no reason to be rude and lack the principles of basic costumer service. I work with people too and we all have bad days but by the looks of these other reviews, this is a very common occurrence. I am glad people are willing to speak up about this. Another thing I noticed was that apparently someone's order was not in the system and they made the person feel so bad for it and that it was their fault except with all of these problems, it is highly likely that this could have been the establishment's fault but they never even entertained this. I might also add that the woman that took my order when she was making sandwiches I saw her cough into her hands (no gloves mind you) and then grab the *at least it was* wrapped sandwich and put it in the bag. I wanted to try this place because it was close to my campus and I will say that the sandwich tasted good but it was nowhere near worth the horrible aura I experience while being at Ike's. I will surely never spend another dime at Ike's and encourage my friends to not support a business that does not prioritize cleanliness and kindness. Even when they packed up my order, the same man who was taking sip breaks handing a woman her order, was throwing my stuff together and gave me a tiny bag when he saw I was also holding my chips and drink. That was not very thoughtful if you ask me but I would not expect thoughtfulness after what I had already endured from this sandwich joint. I think Ike's would benefit from a personality change and should consider improving their warmth and helpful nature.
