I only know of Bonjour from a random drive by. Such a cute pastry / bakery with lots to offer. I stopped in around early afternoon on a Saturday and the shop was busy. There are pastries displayed right when you walk in (croissants, etc) There's a long enclosed pastry counter with delectable options. Each pastry is laid out and looks scrumptious. Although I wanted to order a variety, I chose two eclairs (I was thinking about eclairs earlier in the day) They also have quiche and small pizzas. I'm not sure what else as far as non pastries is concerned. Once I saw the quiche, I was in. They had a few options from ham to artichoke. I ordered a slice of the artichoke. So good, so good! Once I got home, I broke into one of the eclairs. The pastry cream was especially sweet and perfect. I recommend making the stop. Whether it's on your way from running an errand, or looking for something different to try. They have a whole variety of drinks as well. I like this place, a lot. The pastries I've had were always of consistent quality and the cafe is warm and cozy. It's not jazzed up like other places in the city but you see families, young professionals, and old folks, a great mix of all age ranges. Sure, things run out and are not available for you if you get there too late, but there's always plenty to choose from with a great collection of quality pastries. Not cheap but the quality is commensurate and worth what you pay for. I come here usually after taking a stroll in Roland park with my family or to get someone I love a treat for his/her birthday. So I ordered the Sacher Torte. It is a classic Austrian chocolate cake layered with chocolate and apricot preserves. I was expecting a French variation of the Sacher Torte and it was indeed quite different. Don't get me wrong because it was a yummy cake but it was definitely not authentic Austrian Sacher Torte as it tasted more like a Black Forest cherry torte (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte) due to rich cherry-raspberry preserve filling instead of apricot preserves. read more

Fathers Day was spent at Bonjour. A very cute and quaint dessert parlor. I thought it was the cutest place for our little lady to hang with daddy. We caught them right before closing, our own fault. But the customer service was not rushed. The desserts were still very much fresh and delicious. My daughter (almost two) does not eat sweets frequently. Safe to say, her entire day was made. Bonjour has been on my list for awhile. I'm so happy we made it there. We tried a chocolate chip cookie, exotic fruit tart and another chocolate dessert. We barely left any crumbs. The customer service is a always a little less than warm and the bathroom is so small I can barely fit my legs in and shut the door but the baked goods are so good, I don't even mind. The flavors change a bit by season but they are always well done and beautiful. The prices aren't bad for desserts that in a restaurant would be at least $10 but a little more than say a fancy cupcake. I wish they had better parking because walking down Falls Rd with a bakery box is a little scary but they do pack things nicely. read more

Bonjour is one of my favorite places for a sweet treat. I fully recommend to anyone wether it's to grab a quick breakfast, to get a nice coffee, or just to treat yourself. I've actually been going there for about 9 years now and here's what i have to say. * Food: The food is absolutely delicious. My usual is the chocolate mousse cake and it is so delightful. With a creamy mousse and light sponge on the bottom. It's got all of my favorite textures combined with a rich chocolate flavor. Besides my usual, the croissants, macarons, and quiches are lovely. It's also a great place to pick up a nice birthday cake! *Cleanliness: Bonjour is always sparkling clean which really matters to me. The counters are tidy and clearly wiped regularly. Plates and silverware are also always clean. *Service: Due to the fact that I have been going for so long, I have almost formed friendships with the staff at Bonjour. I come in and they tell me how much older I look and how long i've been coming. Every employee is sure to create a home like atmosphere that instantly makes a customer feel comfortable. Excellent food but the staff don't seem to like they want to help the customers on hand. The counter staff tend to give the customers a lot of attitude if they have larger orders and and / or ask questions about the products and take a few seconds to make decisions . We want to support local businesses like yours but this is the second time we have encountered poor and downright rude customer service on a Saturday morning. If you want to buy from there it seems that you need to know what you need before you enter the store otherwise the entire experience leaves a sour taste in the mouth. I've visited twice. First time for takeout dessert with part of my family. One of us intentionally didn't come because they can't eat gluten, it's medically necessary, and there's no point in going to a bakery without any apparent gluten free options on the online menu. My husband ordered one dessert and the server told us that it was made with nut flour. So I naturally asked if it's gluten free and she said yes it is. The second visit we returned with the family member who can't eat gluten. I asked the server about the same dessert, confirming that it's made of nut flour and is gluten free. She said it is and pointed out 4-5 items that are gluten free. She was knowledgeable about cross-contamination issues which I appreciated. Coffee was good and the gluten free desserts were some of the best we've eaten. I only gave four stars because there is room for improvement. The menu online doesn't indicate that they have any gluten free offerings. I had passed it over as an option for my GF family member, and I bet many other people who can't eat gluten have as well. The menu on the website really should be updated to note gluten free items. Celiacs would go wild for it! The restaurant is intimate with just a few tables. The selection was good, but that was pretty much all that was good about this place. It's a cute shop, sure, but the woman working behind the counter was so unwelcoming. It was like she couldn't be bothered with helping me and my friend. It felt uncomfortable to eat there, to say the least, with all her watching you with every way we walk in that store. Not to mention, her other worker couldn't understand the price of their own products. "How much are one of these cakes?" "About $4.00?" Prices me $5 each. This involves my sister Nicole Wheatley and how she was treated during an interview today. BONJOUR BAKERY & CAFÉ is said to be "a charming little house on Falls Road" in Baltimore, MD. They serve sweets, coffee, and even do custom orders. They also discriminate against those with disabilities. Nicole was so eager to interview for a position at Bonjour French Bakery and Café that she showed up again, even after she was stood up at her first interview being told that the restaurant "had an emergency" but did not notify her. So today, she was able to meet with Gayle Brier to interview for their bakery clerk position. This interview ended almost abruptly as Gayle learned of Nicole's visual impairments informing her that her "granddaughter is blind" so she knows the limitations this can create. She informed Nicole that she would "be too slow behind the counter due to her vision and the cashier would be too small for her" and that it would that it would "cost her money. Not to mention, Gayle felt inconvenienced that Nicole didn't share her disability in advance. Many "Best Employer Lists" highlight employers who take great pride in providing accessibility, so do some research Gayle Brier. We can all relate to the disappointment of not being accepted for a job position we apply and interview for. But imagine a world where this decision isn't based off of your skillset, but merely because you are disabled. October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month and I encourage those reading this to have an open mind and give everyone a fair chance. What a great way to escape a Starbucks!!! Holy Crap. I thank my friend for telling me this place exists. I stopped in this cheery purple coffee and pastry shop early on a Monday morning. IMG_2208 The barista was super cheery. I didn't ask for a fancy coffee, just an iced brew (come on folks, I am sure you are not surprised)... It was brilliantly mild and smooth. I didn't add any sugar - just a little cream. I can do a medium roast coffee without much additions, just most places give me a dark bitter roast. Not Bonjour - these guys use coffee beans from Orinoco, a small, fair trade coffee roaster in Maryland. I did get to see the barista's handywork as she handed out a few beautiful coffee milk froth designed lattes. I realized as I walked in that I forgot my yogurt for breakfast. Luckily though, they have tons of choices. Not my go to egg sammich, but lots of quiche and pastries. I went with a sweet cheese croissant. They have chocolate one and tons of sweet looking treats, but I like a little my breakfast a little more on the savory side. It was a perfect combo with my coffee. read more

After all my visits, I'm still not sure what to think of this place. I can have one of two distinctly different experiences when I stop by depending on who is working. One woman is incredibly pleasant. She greets you as you enter the door and is really what you would expect to find in this cozy, neighborhood bakery. The other woman is the complete opposite - gruff and bordering on rude. One of my first visits in here happened to be with her and in my hungry, curious state, I simply asked what a couple of the pastries were to decide what to order. You would have thought I had asked her to tell me every ingredient used in every baked item in the store in alphabetical order. I honestly groan a little when I walk inside and see her behind the counter. But, on to the more important stuff - my typical order is a ham and cheese croissant and a brewed coffee. They use Orinoco beans and it's quite delicious. They rotate the flavored coffee offering regularly which is nice when you want to change it up. As for the croissant, in my opinion, it's not to the caliber of the one you'll find at The Bun Shop but it's decent and sizeable. I doubt they're made each morning because they have that chill to them like a baked good taken out of the display case at Starbucks. But, if the nice woman is working - and you'll know right off the bat which one she is - she will nicely warm it up for you if you ask and it improves it greatly. I've had their chocolate croissant before and I felt that Starbucks' new one from La Boulange was superior. But what do I know? I also find it maddening that a place that was voted, and heavily touts, Best Macarons by Baltimore Magazine (granted back in 2011) never seems to have them available. This review is long overdue but better late than never right?! I was at the Haute Dog Carte ordering some stuff when I noticed that the Pink building next to me was a bakery! While I was waiting for my order to be done, I decided to stop by Bonjour and give it a try. As I walked in, the place was cozy, though, if you're tall then you might have to be more aware of the ceiling. The showcase had all kinds of different little treats so I couldn't decide on what to get. There was an older couple sitting near the door that intervened when I was expressing my indecisiveness. They told me their favorite treats and recommended a few others. I decided to get everything they recommended me. I went home and tried out some of their treats and was pleasantly surprised on how delicious they were! As far as I know, most of their treats are made daily from scratch. This is my local French bakery. I love how the outside of the store is painted a lavender color and there are always pretty flowers out front-- so cute! The pastries are gorgeous and I have yet to sample one I did not like. The coffee is great, very nutty. They are open until 7pm, which I love. It seems like a lot of bakeries close in the afternoon. On Thursday evenings, they serve crepes for dinner (BYOB). It's a fun place to meet up with friends and enjoy a casual meal and a bottle (ok, a few bottles) of wine. The crepes are not as good as Crepe du Jour in Mt. Washington, but this is a much more casual type of meal. There isn't much seating, but you can put tables together if you go with a group. It's not as good as Patisserie Poupon or Bonaparte Breads, but it doesn't require a trip downtown either, so for me that's a major plus. Ample street parking is available. read more

In what is apparently becoming a theme for this month, again I followed a yelp review to a website and a website to a store, hoping to buy exactly what I saw on the website. I should really learn. Bread, that most ancient of foods, is a vital necessity of the German table, eaten at least twice a day. Given its importance, good bread is much sought after, and generally, sadly, hard to find on this side of the Atlantic. So, when our regular vendor once again ran out (urrgh..) and Bonjour's website suggested that they had artisan breads, including 7 grain and whole grain, acceptable substitutes to the wheat breads of home, we decided to make the drive down Falls Road to give it a try. And this is where the disappointment comes in. While the bakery itself looks nice and cozy for a cup of coffee, and the pastry selection looked good, none of the breads, rolls, or other non-sweet creations were actually in evidence in the store, the exception being some sad looking ciabatta breads on a shelf. When asked, staff apparently knew nothing of the website's offerings. A turn on the heel, a muttered word of annoyance, and off we were to try yet another bakery, review forthcoming there.
