    Black coffee

I can't say enough good things about this hidden gem! If you're looking for a healthy yet authentic Mexican breakfast/brunch, this is the spot. From the moment we walked in, the warm and inviting atmosphere set the tone for an amazing meal. The coffee was definitely gourmet. Service was friendly and attentive, and you can tell the staff takes pride in the food and experience they provide. Whether you're a local or just passing through, this place is a must-visit for a wholesome, flavorful Mexican brunch. Can't wait to come back!

Stopped in for brunch. The service and the atmosphere are excellent. It's a cute little brunch spot and everyone there was so nice. Started with the dragonfruit mimosa, which was nice chance from traditional but would probably get the traditional next time. The omelet had decent flavor and great presentation but lacked a bit on the flavor. The veggies were extra crunchy as well which took away from the omelet. The banana bread looked great, but the taste from the oven or warmer was stuck to it.. as if you could taste everything else that was warmed up before it, quite a bummer. Would maybe come back and try different dishes because the staff and atmosphere were 5/5 but the food left a lot to be desired.

Very good place for a breakfast and brunch the service was on point, the food was also good I 100% recommend!!

Great ambiance, food, and service. Natural light with simple decorations adds a great calming touch.

My only review is this place is small and gets crowded! I wandered in on a Sunday and it was packed with brunching friends. There was a long line of reservations and walk ins that couldn't really be accommodated. The wait was over an hour and ordering to go was an option but decided to come back another day to enjoy the full experience. Takeaway: CALL AHEAD

    Bad service

The food was absolutely delicious, unfortunately the service was the ABSOLUTE WORST! Paloma, our waitress was unprofessional and lacked common courtesy. It took almost 30 min to get our drinks, and did not come to check up on us. This was not the issue, we asked to get our bill and waited another 10 min as we made eye contact to get her attention. We had to ask her manager to get us the check after 15 min of waiting. Paloma then goes off and flick us off as her manager was speaking to her addressing her lack of service to our table of only 4, granted this was before we even spoke to the manager. As a customer seeing this is NOT OK!!! It's a shame that the experience trumped the delicious food. Our friends that invited us to Bonhomia have been here and said they had previous bad experiences with Paloma, this issue needs to be addressed. If your looking to celebrate or have a good experience, take your money elsewhere... The valley has some amazing restaurants, don't waist your time or money at this establishment!

I visited Bonhomia for lunch and it did not disappoint. I went with a large group without a reservation and the staff was very accommodating. I ordered the red chilaquiles; they're served on tostadas drenched with salsa. This was a different experience to the chilaquiles I've eaten before, but the tostadas cut easily. The dish was too watery for my liking, but the chilaquiles were still tasty. They also have desserts - I tried the matcha brownie which was absolutely delicious!

The good: this small hidden gem has a great ambiance and absolutely picture perfect pastries. We went in for brunch and ordered the madam croque which I have to admit was just ok. We also had the chilaquiles rojos and those were uniquely plated and flavorful. They offered chilaquiles rojos, blancos or negros all varying in sauce and protein. The bad: the place is small so if you go in a busy hour the waits are long. Staff was ok maybe just a off day which is understandable. The ugly: we skipped tasting the lovely looking pastries but we will definitely be back!

Bok Choy Salad with Grilled Salmon

I've been wanting to come to this place since 2 Mother's Days ago, and I finally got the chance this year. I actually wanted to go for the pastry desserts, but I'm so glad I didn't go just for that. My family & I went during Brunch. We started with a basket of sweet & savory bread. I love bread & it was well worth it. It was a mix of savory bread with butter & jam, plus sweet breads such as carrot cake, & a buttery sweet almond bread, sooo good! I then ordered the BLT, which has to be the BEST BLT I've ever had. The bacon was pralined along with a little bit of a kick of that amazing serrano aoioli in it & the dried tomatoes gave it the perfect zing. It was amazing. The other dishes we had were the grilled salmon on the Bok Choy Salad, in which the honey soy glaze on it married the dish together, it was sweet & salty mix. Another was the white chilaquiles, which were very good & tasty with the white sauce & manchego cheese covering it & made it delicious. The bits of the Chicharrones in the chilaquiles were quite the treat. Yum! And, the last dish was the pesto avocado toast, which was a fresh taste in every bite. It was a delicious experience. The service was friendly. good & attentive. It's a small place, so now I know why you need reservations, besides the food being delicious. The ambiance is comfortable. That Saturday I went, they had a great singer who was playing the guitar, but I don't know if he was with the restaurant or with the group next to us who was celebrating their kids communion. The guy was really good. It is a MUST visit. You know, I went for desserts, but with everything I ate. I had no room for dessert, so. I will have to go back to taste those delicious desserts they have in the showcase. I will be back!

We went there for brunch and were pleasantly surprised. The waiters were courteous and fast and the food was amazing. We couldn't stop eating. We ordered a basket of savory and sweet breads and mimosas to start. The breads and cakes were beautiful and delicious and we specially liked the fig jam that came on it. For the entree I had the cilantro and pistachio soup. My husband had the BLT. Our friends had the mushrooms and oyster soup and the madame croquet. It was truly an amazing experience and we wish we lived in McAllen to be able to come back often.

    Black Chilaquiles

Was visiting McAllen for work, and was looking for a breakfast/brunch place. Bonhomia catched my attention based on the menu they have. Let's just say I am glad I went. This place is clean, hip, has friendly staff and the food was great. I had the Sourdough Salmon that was delicious, but nothing special or unique. On the other hand..... Black Chilaquiles were AMAZING. Tons of delicious sauce, fresh tostadas, and perfectly cooked egg. Highly recommend. I could eat that every day. For dessert, I had their pistachio macaroon. It was so fresh and delicious to the point I finished it up in 2 bites. Service was phenomenal. Rebecca was super attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable, considering she had just started there. Thank you for the great experience and recommendations.

This was our second trip from Harlingen to eat at this lovely restaurant. The Pitaya Pineapple Mimosa alone is worth the trip but the food and pastries....mmmmmmm! The Oyster Mushroom soup was heavenly! For our entrees, I enjoyed the Duck and Potatoes while my husband enjoyed the Black Chilaquiles and both were scrumptious! The Orange Pineapple juice my husband ordered was freshly squeezed and he loved it. Their pastries are absolutely gorgeous and just as delectable! A couple of reviewers have given it low ratings because of portion size. These portions are perfectly normal sized entrees for adults so don't be dissuaded from trying this awesome restaurant. In fact, we have leftovers each time and get to enjoy it the next day! P.S. Take some of those incredible pastries home for later!

The place is very busy, but despite that the wait was only 10 minutes at 10:00 am on a Saturday. The hostess and our server were both very friendly. The place advertises that it specializes in home cooked comfort foods so we figured we'd have to see how their biscuits and gravy were. We ordered a 1/2 order and it came with a biscuit split in half and covered with gravy and sausage. The flavor was perfect - it definitely lived up to 'home cooked comfort food'. I ordered an omelette - three cheeses, sausage, bacon and ham with onions, cilantro and jalapeños - which came with refried (black) beans. The omelette was very good - flavorful and fresh. They actually use slices of cheese inside and on top - I've never had an omelette prepared that way but it was very good. When I first tasted the salsa I was not a fan - it was warm and had a different flavor - then I put it on the omelette and - great pairing and great flavor combo. The refried black beans were sadly underwhelming - no real flavor. I know they were homemade but they were missing the flavor that usually comes with refried beans (black or pinto) My wife had the quiche which had onions, peppers, sausage, mushrooms and cheese. It was very good. Even the crust was good. She ordered the breakfast potatoes as the side. The flavor of the potatoes was excellent. Half of them were lightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside which were great; the other half were overcooked and became potato chips - good flavor but not a breakfast potato. We will definitely come back to try their lunch food and dessert (we were too full today). They have a good variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner items on the menu so there is something for everyone. We were glad we stopped in.

The owner/operators are very personable and kind people as well. The staff are attentive and take great care of you. Food comes out promptly and in my 3 visits, precisely as ordered. I don't believe I've ever felt more welcomed into a restaurant than here. Seriously this is what other restaurants should strive to deliver. Fantastic food, great environment to eat in and welcoming staff. Breakfast: both the works omelet and migas were great (especially with the added salsa). 1000% get the fruit. The dip they provide is of similar idea to that which Jason's deli gives. With the primary difference that this one makes Jason's seem entirely inadequate. Lunch: The chicken Parmesan is an excellent choice, I got pasta instead of potatoes. It was a very healthy portion and filled me up. Even the veggies it comes with are properly seasoned and cooked. The tea is wonderful, they do offer flavored teas but I did not try that. TLDR: great establishment, give them a try.

We all ordered something different with the goal of being able to taste more of the menu. The menu is a well-rounded Southern American selection, and all of it is made in-house. It was a nice touch with the newspaper like menu, loved the decor and cabin home theme. The side salad was fresh; however, the house-made ranch was too creamy and too thick. There was potential with the cooked bacon mixed in, but the ranch flavor was missing. The cup of chili was great, similar to Wendy's chili if you needed a comparison. My meatloaf was good; the added carrots and topped crispy onions weren't too bad; however, the drizzled brown gravy was a no for me. The side of creamy grits and green beans and bacon were gobbled up! The cornbread muffins were a bit dry. Side of hash browns were good, a little on the oily side. The biscuit and gravy were colossal! Loved the gravy; the biscuits were a bit too doughy, almost seemed a bit undercooked, and for some reason, there seemed to be a lack of flavor in them. Enjoyed the ham and eggs. The pot roast dish was savory, and everything was nice; the veggies were a little over-seasoned, but I didn't mind them. The chicken-fried steak plate was a hit, I didn't even get a chance to take a solo photo. We had no room for desserts, and leftovers were taken home and appreciated. I'd like to add, despite ordering the larger versions of these meals, we only paid $68 and some change! The place was clean, the wait time was commendable, and the service was incredible!!! Despite the small misses, we'd still return. The majority of our food was great, and we left fuller than ever!

La Casa de la Abuela covers every category for a delightful breakfast, brunch or lunch: a menu with great variety, quality delicious food, excellent service, a beautiful and pleasant atmosphere, good parking and a great location. My friend had the enchiladas suizas. I ordered the chilaquiles rojas con pollo. The menu warned that the salsa roja is spicy... and they are right. I like spicy, and this gave me the hiccups! Not to worry, they have several options, including mild ones. I was impressed with their molcajete of guacamole, the refreshing strawberry lemonade, the classy presentation of each dish. I almost ordered the chile relleno or the torta ahogada. I learned they make their own birote (a denser kind of bread roll) for the torta ahogadas, which is key for that dish hailing from Jalisco, which is smothered in salsa prior to serving. Everything I saw was spotless, elegant, and beautifully decorated. It's a new fave, and I will go back. When I do, I want to try one of their pastries: conchas, chocolate or strawberries and cream filled croissants, and more. This was a great place for a meet-up with a good friend. It would also be great for a date with my wife, a business lunch, or small groups. The dining room is not very big, so large groups would need to find another option.
