The wait staff was very good and it was a good place in the middle of nowhere to meet between Belleville and the hinterland where my friends live. Be careful to not confuse this place with their Saline location. I had no idea they had two locations but my friends almost went there by accident. It was our first dining experience since the pandemic so we are out of practice. The only thing is it's often a hopping place so if noise bothers you pick an in between time when there are fewer patrons. Also this is the first place I've ever seen that lets you buy a round for the kitchen staff. Not sure how I feel about the chef drinking in the back but it's an employee minded positive thing as long as they don't drive too soon after. :-) It is also so much better without the smoky atmosphere of older times when we first moved out this way. We dropped a LOT of bar/restaurants off the rotation because of inconsiderate patrons choking us out with their smoking. Michigan is a much better place to live for that change. Oh my gosh Let's talk about bone heads bbq. I live about 40 minutes from this restaurant. But last week on my boyfriends birthday, he wasn't feeling up to going out. I've heard good things from family who's gone to this restaurant but have never been and neither had he. Well we can never find decent bbq and I just said eff it and made the drive all the way out there to grab some carry out for us. I walk in the front door to amazing smells and homie atmosphere. Half bar on one side and half sit down restaurant on the other. Both sides looked up at me and smiled so I already had a pretty good vibe. If this place is THIS packed on a Thursday evening and everyone seems happy, then clearly the staff is doing something right. Anyways, I get the food, drive all the way home (partly knowing it's not gonna be as good because it would probably be cold) but it wasn't! In fact, everything was perfect. I ordered the pulled pork and Mac and cheese. Both hands down are my new favorites. I will def be back but hopefully next time I'll actually be dining in. I also heard it's haunted. Added bonus. It was hard rating this establishment 3 stars, because I had really high hopes given all the great things I've heard about it. Let's start with the good. Two words: FRIED PICKLES. These were hands down the best I've had. Also good was the service-prompt, polite, and attentive. Now the not so good: Pulled chicken dinner. The BBQ sauce tasted like a store brand in a bottle (or worse). The chicken was dry. The coleslaw was not tasty either. Also, I didn't care for the seasonings on the Cajun fries. I order the bone head bbq combo to try out all there bbq. I was very VERY disappointed it had to be the dries bbq I ever had in my life . Idk if it was leftover bbq from the day before but it was very bad. And this was at 12pm you would think everything is fresh but not at all. My friends all order sandwiches which they say was ok. Decided to try out this place for the first time after a co-worker recommended it to me. Came on a Friday night during the halloween week with a few friends. The place was decorated up from the inside out, which was awesome. All the staff were also dressed in costumes as well. Cool! I went straight ahead and started off with two glasses of their drink special "apple puckers" (hot cider and rum). It was a perfect way to warm me up before a big meal to come on a cold night. We went with the fan favorite pickle chips to start. LOVED it. Super crispy and hot. I can see why everyone loves them. For my main dish, I wanted to try everything on their bbq menu, so I went with the combo bbq platter (pulled pork, bbq chicken, beef brisket and ribs) served with collard greens and cornbread. Oh, and I had their clam chowder too since my friend was raving about it. To start, the clam chowder was impressively pretty good. Kinda wished I had a larger bowl, but I had to save some space in my tummy for the main plate. The pulled pork was very good. It seemed to be cooked longer than pulled pork that I have had at other places. The texture was almost like mush. Flavors were there though, very tasty. The beef brisket was decent. It was topped with some pretty good bbq sauce. The bbq chicken was also pretty good, but not extraordinary. The bbq ribs were probably the best meat on the plate. Thought the meat was not fall off the bone tender, I liked the char on it along with the dry rub. Surprisingly, the collard greens were pretty damn delicious. It was not overcooked, so it had a light crunch to it and also a slight mild spicy kick as well. Loved it. BBQ is hard to do. Especially if you think you know how to do it. That being said, you would think a restaurant that's invested in building a brand and even advertising for a billboard off a busy freeway, one would think that you would do BBQ well... This is a restaurant that's tucked away in a place just shy of being country. There is no network connection or Wi-Fi so it means you have the sheer chance of just enjoying your food, but suffice to say, the food is what kills it. The place itself is amazing. Cozy, country, and almost a community vibe to it. The inside is just something that your grandmother decorated but decided it'd be better to have a bar as well. But again, it's the food that kills the whole vibe... I have to critique the brisket because that's what I ate. It's my default. What I go to for anything that calls itself BBQ. The grade and quality of the brisket determines the authenticity of the BBQ place. If the BBQ place has good brisket, then it's a legit place. If the BBQ place has mediocre brisket, then you will get a mediocre rating from me. And brisket has to be the easiest thing to cook. 1 and a half hour per pound of meat smoked over hickory and oak. Fat side up on the flat, rubbed down with a savory dry rub and allowed to cook in a 250 degree heat. The fat renders down and seeps into the meat while the smoke flavor seeps into the meat injecting the oak/hickory flavors creating a char and a smoke ring that leaves the meat tender and moist with no need for BBQ sauce. If brisket is done right, depending on how big your flat and point are, anywhere from 7 to 14 hours of smoking will give you the final product. Unfortunately with Bonehead's, the meat was... dry as can be. No amount of water and BBQ sauce could've saved it. The brisket was dead before it even reached my table. The pitmaster did something horrid to the meat because literally, the tiny chunks of brisket looked drier than the Sahara. SERIOUSLY, each bite of meat sucked the spit from my mouth and the BBQ sauce nor the water could quench the arid condition the brisket left my mouth in. Brisket is supposed to resist a little bit before snapping but it's supposed to glisten with the rendered fat from the flat if cooked properly. I do not recommend this place for the brisket. But that's where the conundrum is. It's a BBQ place. You're supposed to GET brisket at a BBQ place. Anything else is just unConstitutional!!!! Pulled pork, maybe. You could do smoked chicken but, you BBQ for brisket. Low and Slow is the general BBQ motto. And the final product is supposed to be tender, juicy, savory, with a hint of sweetness from the sauce but I never got that. The only saving grace to the whole experience was the garlic loaded mashed potatoes. Topped with bacon, melted cheese, and scallions definitely was the defining moment of the whole plate. At 14.99 for really bad brisket. I wasn't impressed at all. The only other saving grace to my time at Bonehead's was the waitress, Shantel. She was sweet, kind, fun, and just redeemed my time there. I may just go back because she's there because it sure wasn't the food. If you're going east on 94 past the Rawsonville exit and you're looking for BBQ. I recommend you keep going or turn back towards Ann Arbor as you'll find better food there. I don't recommend taking the back roads to get to this place because, well... you'll walk away $18.00 less than what you had because, Bonehead's brisket took that from you and left you high and dry... literally. read more

I took James here to have a bit of artery clogging fun. Besides it is Valentine's weekend and I figured there would not be a wait in the sticks. I was right. They have numerous drink specials going before 7 which is nice. They also had nightly specials on food as well as a weekend special on both prime rib and a surf and turf combo. The surf and turf was a 9 oz ribeye with beer battered shrimp. I was going to get a half pound burger as they are supplied by Knight's and come with fun options for toppings. I was lured though by their deal on fish and chips, three pieces with fries and the ubiquitous cole slaw for 8.99. The fish was meaty and in a perfect beer batter. Crunchy and not greasy. The tartar was a bit thick but tasted fine. I still went with a bit of malt vinegar instead as it hit my taste buds and cut down a bit on the heavy feel. The fries were fine but I hate the off brand ketchup myself, more malt vinegar worked better for me. The coleslaw was the same meh as last time. My husband was all over the ribeye and shrimp. The ribeye was obviously marinated and grilled. It had distinctive woodsmoke flavors and was incredibly juicy as it was well marbled. It smelled so incredible and tasted really damn good. It was a smaller cut than the one they regularly feature but it was plenty for my husband and he even gave me a few bites. The shrimp were tender and large, again that beer batter gave them great crunch. His starter salad was standard, his picked side of mac and cheese was cavatappi and a more subtle cheese mix. We shared a skillet cookie for dessert, the cookie was quite good but I was sad they use very generic vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce on it. They could definitely kick it up a couple notches. My friend lives 5 minutes from here. This is probably my first time in a town this rural. We spent a good 10 minutes driving on a gravel road without seeing anyone in sight. I felt there is only 1 or 2 restaurants in this small town. We arrived around 3pm after a day of canoeing and kayaking. We got an order of pickle fries with a side of ranch dressing. These were really good. It is perfect for 4 to share. I love how the pickles are slicked thin and the sour-ness goes well with the batter. The ranch sauce was cool. I am not a huge fan of American food but this place is pretty good. I got the BBQ globet- It looks like it would be dessert but it was Beans with colesaw or garlic mash potatoes topped with a slightly spicy pulled pork for about $8.39. Good deal. I don't like beans so I replaced it with more mash potatoes. It also comes with corn bread. After the pickled fries I was slightly full so I just ate half of the pulled pork and corn bread and some mash potatoes. The mash potatoes were REALLY soft and creamy. Good! I look forward to eating it tonight for dinner. The bathroom was clean and had about 3-4 stalls. It is a bit confusing as I almost went into the men's bathroom so be careful. The waitress was nice and was good at her job. I probably won't be coming back since it is a bit out in the middle of nowhere but if I ever happen to be in the town I would like to go back for more pickle fries. Yum Yum! read more

Bone Heads, formerly known as the Pickle Barrel, is "the treasure of Willis." It came under new management in March 2009. They promise friendly neighbors, ghosts and trains rushing by on the tracks just a couple hundred feet away from the building. We didn't see ghosts, but the staff was friendly and we did have a train rock the building as it went by. We had never visited the Pickle Barrel, but they claim to have retained much of the same menu. The dill pickle chips for appetizers were extremely addictive. The riblet appetizers were very good. The house-made BBQ sauce was worth returning for. The number of riblets was amazing for just an appetizer! They were a meal in itself. And at $7.99, a pretty solid value. The macaroni and cheese was extremely good. I'd also recommend the pulled pork sandwich, but be sure to ask for an extra side of sauce. It's a little too thin on sauce for my tastes. The fries leave a lot to be desired. They're obviously from a big bag of frozen fries. Overall the meal was very good. We will definitely be returning to try other options on the menu in the near future. The bar was empty when we were there, and is a little small, but looks like a great place to hang out and meet with friends. They even have on HD TV on the wall. (But it wasn't tuned to the Tigers game which was in progress.) The extremely tiny town of Willis was founded in 1886, and they claim the building was built in 1865. It has an extensive history as a restaurant. The town is so small that signs for other businesses are hand-painted, and roads that off-shoot main street are dirt. This place was steadily busy when we were there. Traffic was comprised of regulars and folks looking to try it for the first time. I hadn't planned on eating out, so had the bbq chicken salad. It was excellent, and still way more meal than I needed. The sauce on the chicken was so good that I couldn't resist eating it all. I didn't need to use much dressing because the salad contents and chicken were well balanced. My partner had a 1/2 chicken bbq dinner and loved it. He enjoyed the sides and the meal fulfilled his craving for a traditional bbq dinner. The price was good two full dinners for around $25, and the service was also good. Once again, the Deep Fried Pickle Chips were awesome... It's not hard to make Deep Fried food taste good in my book, so kinda figured they would be!! For my main entree, I ordered the "Death By Pork" Sandwich with Cajun Fries and Coleslaw. I was hoping the sandwich would be similar to Slow's Triple Threat, but it didn't even come close... The bacon and ham were alright, but once again, the Pulled Pork leaves a lot to be desired. Not to sure how they pull the pork, it is like small tiny shavings, and once again over sauced and left in a warmer all day long... The fries were wonderfully seasoned and the coleslaw was good. My wife ordered the Rib Tip Dinner with a potato, baked beans and corn bread. The Rib Tips were 2 large pieces pretty much surrounded in fat and gristle. It was nasty looking and she had to play the game of chewing and spitting out gristle. The baked potato was wrapped in foil and according to her, "tasted like tin foil." The baked beans, like last time, had little taste to them. the cornbread couldn't be eaten by hand, cause as soon as you would try to pick it up, would fall to pieces. It was soaked in honey I believe (could be wrong) and we believe it was made previously and frozen, then reheated... Needless to say, we didn't finish her piece. We also tried the Mac and Cheese again... To take word for word from my last review, "The three cheeses melted altogether into a mediocre white colored mac and chesse with hardly any taste." The waitress also had trouble running my debit card, and mentioned it, acting like it was no big deal to have 2 charges on it, saying one would fall off, but funds would be held. That put us over the top, and therefore, won't be back. The food, at least from my opinion is mediocre at best, and they charge just as much as Slow's and Red Smoke. We wanted to get together with some friends and none of us had been to Bone Heads yet, so this was my first visit. Bone Heads is in the tiny town of Willis, occupying a turn of the century house. A skull holding salt and pepper shakers graces the hutch near the front door. Bikers park right in front, away from the cars, where they can keep an eye on things through the front window. Even though each table was filled with conversing diners, we could still hear each other because the sound didn't bounce around mercilessly. On to the menu! We started out with the catfish and fried pickle appetizers. The catfish was a bit salty. but had a creamy sauce and came out to us very quickly. The fried pickles were a bit sour in my opinion, but each cook has different ideas, right? I got the pulled pork for my entree. Tender, juicy, and plenty for me. I ate all of my sides (baked beans, cole slaw and corn bread) and brought the rest of my juicy pork home for another meal. Hubby got the Bone Heads Combo: ribs, chicken, pulled pork & brisket. Yep. He'd be taking a lot of that home. We got two more meals out of our combined leftovers. Gives me a break from cooking. I was full, but not too full to try a few small bites of the cheesecake hubby had ordered for dessert. Creamy! Be sure to read the back of the menu, which describes the local ghost. I went here due to a friend inviting me for live music and checking out this place. It was in a pretty rural area. The place had a small town feel which I like. That's ok because I grew up in areas like this. I came in through the back entrance and ordered a drink. This must have been the bar area and my friend recommended the other area which was a lot more quiet. The guitar player did not show on this night. We ordered the broasted brussel sprouts which were excellent. Some of the best I have had. The combo was recommended so I ordered that. It had brisket, Ribs and half a chicken. It also had cornbread, coleslaw and I got beans. They do give you a lot of food. The brisket was kind of fatty as mentioned in some other reviews. I do agree with this. The ribs were good and the chicken was kind of basic. The shredded pork was just ok. Just meat. No bread. There was hot and honey BBQ sauce. The sauce was ok. In comparison to other places I have been it was not close to the best. Overall, the food was just ok. The people and the waitress was great! Kudos to them for their friendliness. Would I go back? We ordered a fried pickle chips, rack of ribs, fish fry, cup of chili, Mac n cheese, beans. Pickle chips - were some of the best I've had. Perfectly battered and their buttermilk ranch was love. Coke - I know I know, how is this place's any different? Had lots of carbonation, which was perfection.. lately restaurants have been on the flat-side, so I needed to note this... Ribs - were massive, we split it between two people and still had left overs. It had the perfect amount of BBQ on it, enough for flavor, but not dripping in it. The meat was so tender you could pull it off with a fork. A must try. Fish Fry was nice and crispy, 3 pieces, perfect for the fish n chips lover. Not too fishy, but still fresh. However, I think it's only on Fridays. Chili was nice and spicy, my kind of chili. Nice and chunky, some places have an imbalance of meat and beans, but this was good. Mac n cheese never showed up, but I'm sure it would good. Definitely have to go back, and I really want to try the Pulled Pork Sundae (it's a sundae of BBQ, not actually ice cream). If you plan on getting a gift card for the holidays make sure you ask for a new one, they reuse them and the one that was given to me was not only very scratched but had dirty fingerprints all over it-was told the manager would have to load another card if I didn't want that one. I am partial to Salt Lick, which like Bone Heads, is located out in the country in Texas where people from all over, come here to dine. I knew going into Bone Heads that I would not have the same experience. However, it was worse than I thought. FYI, if you have a large party like we did, it is best to call ahead for a reservation. Sarah was our waitress and my sister had her as her waitress before and mentioned how nice she was, but the niceness quickly became fake nice as she was swamped. Trust me, I have been a flight attendant for 19 years and I know fake nice when I see it. It seemed that maybe someone called in sick and they were short staffed because Sarah had about 6-7 tables to herself. As a party of 9, we had a large order and it took awhile which is acceptable and understandable. What's not acceptable was the fact that my nephew's grilled cheese lacked the melted cheese as it was partially melted. The cornbread was cold and while I am not sure if this was done by design, it was unpleasant and tasted like jiffy mix. Disgusting! My chicken was warm but not hot and after a few bites, I was done. It was surprising to see that they only had one type of sauce. What kind of bbq joint only has one type of sauce and a sweet sauce at that!? I thought that the mac and cheese would be better since you have to order it as a separate side; NOT! When you deliver mac and cheese and the cheese on top is hardly melted, that's a problem.
