Food was delicious! Cornbread is so moist. I recommend the brisket and the fish, but we have to go back there a few more times to rate more menu items! I have been coming to Bone Heads since they first opened. We have probably gone a dozen times or so. Since the very beginning the food has always been top notch. If you like BBQ this is the best place for it. We always get the pickle chips for an appetizer. My husband and I really enjoy the clam chowder as well. My husband has had the Ribs and Brisket and said both are out of this world. I usually will stick with the pulled pork sandwich. Always good and never a let down. I did try the Salmon one time. It was okay but nothing I would recommend on getting again. I have to say that the food has always been great. BUT, I have to be honest in saying in the past 6 months they have had a change over in staff. The waitress's' are not very good. I was in over the past weekend and our waitress took our order and then we never saw or heard from her again until she brought the bill. We actually had to "flag" down the hostess due to wanting something more to drink and that our meals were actually missing their sides. Its really a bummer to not enjoy going in their like we used to.I am sure we will go back in a few moths to try out the service again but I am not in any hurry. Can't comment on the food, although it smelled delicious. We walked in on a busy Saturday afternoon without reservations. No one approached us about a table, so I approached a lady who appeared to be employed there, whether or not we should seat ourselves. She looked at me like I was the town idiot and was putting her out, before she asked how many and then told us it would be about 25 minutes. Fine-we get it it's busy, however about 2 minutes later a party of 3 arrived with no reservations, and she seated them immediately. Rude. The Twisted Rooster in Belleville turned out to be a much better choice. They seemed happy to see us and our potential monies. Coincidently, we saw another family going in to the Bone Head BBQ as we were leaving, and while we were waiting for our table at the Twisted Rooster they walked in. We have eaten at Boneheads several times in the past. It used to be very good. My wife and I split the combo meal last night. It was not very good. At $24, it was a very small portion. The brisket was quite fatty, the pulled pork was good, the chicken was good, the masked potatoes were very stiff, but the ribs were terrible. They were very dry. Totally burned on one side. Busy neighborhood type hang-out. Historic building was originally a train station. Service was efficient... A little too efficient! My husband's entree came to the table before we had finished our salads. My entree arrived about 5 minutes after his! My plate was covered in what the menu described as rice pilaf. It was just long grain rice with bits of carrot and a lot of pepper to spice it up. Everything was over seasoned with pepper and over cooked . Drove 20 miles to check this place out with friends. We ordered ribs and pulled pork. As others have stated, pulled pork seems to be puréed or was chopped in a food processor; it's consistency is odd. The ribs were overly tender which I like and had a sweet sauce which I like. Cornbread was probably from a box, but I like jiffy cornbread anyway. My Cajun seasoned fries were just regular fries with too much Cajun rub sprinkled on them. My wife loved the mac'n'cheese. The food was the good part of our experience. The service was the bad part. Our waitress lost a couple of our meals to another table so half our table waited 20 minutes will the others were served. We waited all night for anything from her; 15 minutes just to order, 30 minutes for half our order, 20 minutes for our lost meals, 20 minutes for togo boxes which the hostess finally brought to us, 20 minutes for the check. Before you even mention the food, it is very impressive how clean this place is for being an older historical building. They do a great job. As for the food we have always enjoyed our food. Sometimes it's hard to review barbecue places because barbecue can be so delicious. That aside I would have to say that boneheads BBQ probably rates as one of the better ones in the area. Their sauce is sweet a little smokey, their appetizers are delicious especially the fried pickles which they are famous for... and of course they're barbecue is phenomenal. The barbecued chicken is positively delicious the pulled pork is very good the brisket is excellent and the ribs are fantastic. My only advice is to go ahead and make a reservation hours in advance to ensure that when you arrived your table is ready otherwise you may be waiting for 30 to 90 minutes because it's that good! read more

Five stars, for sure! The food was out of this world delicious, the atmosphere was fun and welcoming, and we left already planning to come back again soon. We had a large group of 11, with five kids and six adults (including a vegetarian!), and everyone talked about how much they loved their food and had a blast. The service was outstanding, and the owner personally made sure we were all enjoying ourselves and gave us kindness and attention that made us all instantly feel like family. Before you know it, we were dancing on the patio to some great live music, and we made fast friends with several regular patrons. Great food and great environment. We'd highly recommend the ribs, beef tips, beef brisket, black bean burger, clam chowder, beans, greens, sweet potato, and bread pudding. You'd be a bonehead to drive 6.8 miles from U.S. 23 to dine here. (Their sign says it's just 5 miles east!) The building has been around since the 1800s and the ribs taste like they've been sitting in a cooler since then. and just warmed up . No hickory smoke flavor. If you don't smell smoke when you drive up, the BBQ is not fresh! Chicken wings were fair. Prices were on the high side, too. Signs says smoking is allowed in the lounge, but not true anymore - not even hickory smoke bbq! You'll find better barbecue at a local Greek restaurant. read more

Absolutely the WORST barbecue I have ever had. My husband order the ribs and the meat tasted old. I ordered the Cajun catfish and it was so greasy and you could tell it was cooked once and then refiried. Some pieces were still raw. Absolutely horrible. Keep hearing about this place and i was in need of some Labor Day weekend bbq so this is the place I came to. The place wasn't busy at all and the decor is definitely a throwback. For starters I had their wings in buffalo and honey bbq (buffalo was pretty good and the honey bbq was ok, nothing special). For my meal I had their bbq combo (Ribs, chicken, pulled pork, and beef brisket). The ribs are literally the best thing here, pulled pork was nasty to me (although I will admit I'm not a big pulled pick fan, brisket was way to fatty and hardly any meat, the chicken was straight but dry. I also had 3 sides to go along with my meal: macaroni and cheese (ok, bland), greens (good), and Cajun fries (good, 2nd best thing I had here). Overall, I felt the food here was on the bland side for the most part. Outside of the ribs, fries, and hot bbq squeeze bottle sauce, everything else was forgettable and high price. I came here with my family. It took me a long time to figure out what to say and how to write this review... considering that I love Michigan (my home state) and I love family-owned restaurants. Okay..so here it is in a nut shell, I guess it was my own fault.. that I ordered brisket. In my own pursuit of eating the best food throughout my travels, my personal opinion, I felt that the meat was extremely tough and tasted old. The meat was so tough, and brisket considering how it is made should melt in your mouth like silk ribbons. For a second opinion, I had my mum taste it as well... she agreed the meat tasted old. My father loves this place and it was a real treat to bring me here. However, I could not eat the rest of the meat. Sadly it laid wasted and he told me I could order something else, I declined :( I did like the sides I ordered. I ordered collard greens and potatoes. I am a classically trained chef who worked in the business for several years before changing careers and becoming a writer in the hi-tech field. Though I know alot about food and have many years of experience as a professional writer, tonight's dinner with me, my wife, and six other friends at Boneheads brings me to Yelp for my first restaurant review. Giving it two stars is being generous. The restaurant had been recommended by several people, so, even though it is located out in the sticks, we decided to give it a try. My wife had the Friday night Fish and Chips Special (which she said was very good), and I ordered the small (12 oz.) cut prime rib (with fries and upgrade to French Onion soup (which is supposed to be one of their specialties. The prime rib was cold and did not look very large. Even dipping it in the au jus that came with didn't help. And the onion soups flavourless broth was topped by some sort of chewy cheese that made it inedible to everyone who ordered it at our table. The only other items on our bill were a pickle chip appetizer and two soft drinks -- total bill for dinner for two (no alcohol ), $70.00 (with tip). I won't be going back. read more

I'll be honest; this review may be a little premature. But I'll add to this review when I visit again. The indoors is quite nostalgic inhibiting the feel of the early turn of the century. The building itself has a lot of history; used to be a brothel, then a bank. Ok, onto the food! The ribs were pretty good, not the best I've had but definitely not the worse. Their fried pickles and pulled pork taters were tasty. The mac n cheese was disappointing- mostly noodles in a cream sauce with hardly any cheese flavoring. We were a large crowd (10 of us) and I had to ask three times for another drink (crown and Coke) and never got it. So I'm giving them 3 stars. read more

OMG, the worst restaurant EVER!! The food was cold and the waitress never came back to check. When I finally was able to send the food back I was told by some woman that the plate was warm and that she had the brisket for dinner and that it was fine. I said, the potatoes were cold and that the brisket was not good. Her response was too bad, the food was warm and she thought it was good. I told her I would pay for the food because she obviously need the cash more than I did. She said, "God Bless You." What a load of crap!! The service is bad, the food is bad!! Don't go unless you want to get sick on luke warm food. The health department should show up and check them!! I will never, ever go there again. While the service was wonderful, I was severely disappointed in their ribs. My family and I always enjoy trying new restaurants, especially locally owned Establishments. Our waitress was excellent, the appetizers were very good, however the ribs were horrible, some of the worst we've ever had. Don't get me wrong the BBQ sauce was very good, but the meat (pork) was reheated and tasted like it. At first I thought it was just me, but I brought this up to my wife and father-in-law and they agreed there was something wrong with the way the the ribs tasted. Our waitress was empathetic, however I can't say the same for the owner. She went and asked him to come to our table (we didn't request him) to address our problem. He didn't seem overly concerned. His response was that they smoke 50 slabs the day before to be prepared for the next day. He didn't really address the fact that these tasted horrible to us. He did tell us that no one else has complained about the ribs and they had sold 17 of them. I can't speak for those people I can only address what i tasted. Barely an apology was given. I didn't want anything from him. Being in the service industry, I thought he would want to know so others wouldn't have to deal with the same problem. I was disappointed that he made us feel it was our fault that his ribs didn't taste right. If it was just me having the problem, maybe I could see his point. But it was all three of us who ordered them who all tasted the same thing. He came off as very uncaring. On that note alone I may not go back. read more

I live between Willis and Detroit, and have trouble choosing between Boneheads and Slows in their respective cities. I prefer the ribs at Boneheads. The pickle chips are a quirky, good appetizer, and all the meat is fantastic-you can't go wrong. The draft beer selection is short but sweet. I've tried Boneheads maybe 5 times since moving to the area, and they have exceeded my expectation every time. It's a good family sit down atmosphere, with wooden chairs and tables, plus a bar at one end with tv's. This place puts Willis on the map. read more

Well to say the least I wasn't impressed because I never got served. Came in with my girlfriend to get dinner was seated got drinks and that's where it stopped. I'm having a hard time with this review. I believe the owner is trying to develop a good business, but is having a hard time finding his way. We had the ribs, which were good...not great...but good. (I will say there was a lot of meat on the ribs.) We also had the pulled pork. The sides were ok, again, not great. What was great was the wait staff. Service was excellent. We'll give Bone Heads another try. Bone Heads seems to be the best in the area. Randy's BBQ in Adrian is a lot better. Maybe with some time Bone Heads will get there. read more

We went there for our second time, for a birthday dinner. My hamburger was so greasy that it literally was deteriorating the bun to brown mush. It was absolutely disgusting. I had two bites of the thing and just couldn't eat anymore because the bun was just falling apart. I'm not a picky eater by any means, nor do I mind some grease, but this was the worst I have ever seen. So the waitress comes and asks if I need a box and I say no and show her the bun "mush" that has been made from the grease and she doesn't apologize at all, just offers to get me another bun...after everyone else has been finished with their meals for quite some time. I hope they enjoyed their money for my uneaten burger because nobody in our party will be spending their money there again. read more

My wife was very impressed with the pulled pork in the potato skins. Grandma was underwhelmed with the ribs; she thought they were overcooked. The place was extremely busy, and apparently you should call ahead for reservations if you're coming on Saturday. We were told this was because they had a live band. (This was my first time, so I don't know if this is typical or not for this place.) This seems to be a place for locals. Everyone seemed to know everyone else in the place, and there were lots of very loud conversations happening between tables. In an attempt to avoid pre-game frenzy in both Ypsilanti & Ann Arbor (head to head in football) we ventured to Willis to try something new and to avoid the crowds. The drive was lovely and the location is pleasingly remote. When we pulled up there was a nice mix of vehicles including a couple luxury vehicles and several motorcycles - so you know the food appeals to a variety of people. We started off with their special pulled-pork potato skins and wow - tasty. Others have mentioned the french onion soup and it's not to be missed. I got the beer battered fish which were tasty as well. My boyfriend liked the BBQ but wasn't overly impressed.. The service was off a bit - my soup came out after my entree and the waitress got the wrong order for my bf so he had to wait a bit before getting the correct meal. Bone Heads BBQ is a pretty cool place in a very small town. The place is about 10-15 minutes south of I94 and in the very small town of Willis. I had seen a billboard on 94 advertising it. The actual building appears to be an old general store. It's a very unique setting for a BBQ place. Which also leads to a homey setting. The menu is very in depth. A lot of things to chose from and some very unique BBQ options. I went with the Brisket. The meat had flavor and the rub was good. I would have preferred that they removed the chunks of fat on the brisket. Most briskets I've had have little or no fat. The pickle chips were a great appetizer. Everything had a good flavor. The service was mediocre but the food was good. If I was in the area, I would definitely go back. But it is off the beaten path. read more
