Warning this place gets really crowded. Try for an off peak time like around 2 or 3 pm. I had a slab with sweet potato fries, slaw and cornbread. Service was awesome! We shared a sampler plate on our waitresses suggestion with mixed reviews. I am not a huge brisket fan but their brisket was our favorite thing, it was amazing! The pulled pork was a little mushy but had good flavor. The chicken was good but we didn't pick up a lot of smokiness. The ribs were overcooked and a little dry. We would give this another try if we are ever in the area. When the new owners bought the place I was hesitant on the name... Still don't care for it because it doesn't match the decor... But! I'm glad they kept the decor and the pickle chips :) best pickle chips EVER. Nice that they have entertainment... Had dinner at Bonehead in Willis Tonight. (Used to be The Pickle Barrel) I hadn't been there in 20 years and I was so disappointed when the Pickle Barrel closed. I was pretty leery of another barbecue joint, but OMG! so good! Great and very friendly service. Sarah was our waitress and she was super nice and stayed on top of things even though she was busy busy bysy! Awesome food and the best part... they kept the pickle chips! Other than a wonderful new menu and better food, everything else feels the same as it was 20 years ago. They kept what made the place great and changed what needed to be changed! I am not sure what I was more disappointed in, the BBQ or that other people liked it. Not trying to be a food snob, just that I have eat a lot of good 'Q. First thing I noticed was no smoke smell when I got out of the car, rut-ro! I went with the combo so if one was not to my liking, there would be a fall back. Good theory but didn't work in practice, everything was covered in the same unremarkable sauce. The pulled pork should have been called "puree pork" , they do this so it will carry over from service to service, load it with sauce and you'll never tastes that reheated meat taste it gets from being in the fridge. The beef brisket looked like steakums with ketchup on it, not at all tender and no crust or juicy goodness. On to the chicken, seemed like it was poached first and then left to pick up a touch of smoke, again this was done to keep it moist from the time it left the smoke to the time it was served. This approach looses all of the reasons you crave BBQ. The ribs almost got there but the sauce and the holdover tricks purged and remnant of smokey goodness from the slab. Summary was that the food was cooked early in the day or previous day in a smoke oven, and held in steam trays so unskilled kids could dump in on a plate later, nothing was brought from the que to my table. Great!! I've been to this place about 4 times now (going again this weekend) and the food is awesome! Really unique (the BBQ sundae is amazing as is the French onion soup) and the staff and owners are so nice. We had a surprise bday party here for my sister in Decemeber and Nikki (the owner) went out of her way to decorate and set up the porch/private room for us. It was beautiful. Some of the best barbecue I've had in Michigan! I'm from the south where Barbecue is huge, and I would definitely say Bone Heads could hold their own against some of the greats in the south! Don't go there without ordering the fried pickles! The BBQ Sundae is a great choice if you're not sure what to get, you can't go wrong with it! I'm also a big fan of their brisket! Worst BBQ ever! They should change the sign to say real boiled meat that is graced with bbq sauce. Gross! Absolutely no sign of a smoke ring! We ordered the sampler and couldn't eat anything on the plate except the bread. The fried pickles were good though, and they have local beer on tap. I ordered a 1/2 slab carry out, picklechips and tried but they were out of mac and cheeze. at 2 pm. It took about 10 minutes. 1) no cutlery or napkins in the carry out bag 2) this is a very salt laden carry out meal, the pickle chips were salty. 3) the ribs didn't quite fall off the bone, but thats ok , they were tender enough...but the rub they use must contain a bit of sodium based seasons , I could taste the granular texture of the rub and it was salty. (probably the saltiest rubs I've had on ribs). So be prepared to drink. I was driving so I wasn't drinking. Sides, it came with a baked tato and beans....the beans side was...just barely larger than a thimble... well let's say a very small portion. the tato was fine normalish in size and OK. comes with butter. but no fork to eat anything with luckily I keep my own stash in the car.. I'd maybe go back again, it came to just over 20 plus a 2 buck c/o tip. but I'd go on wed when a full slab o ribs is the price of a 1/2(dine in only), not order the pickle chips and throw that money into alcohol. read more

Ate here after a couple of recommendations from friends, plus it was near where I lived. Pickle chips were pretty good, but wished the pickle was sliced a tad thicker. Had the half BBQ chicken and a side of ribs. Ribs were REALLY fatty, almost to the point of being inedible. Chicken was moist and had plenty of sauce. "Loaded" baked potato was light on toppings. Side portions of coleslaw and baked beans were tasty, but would have liked more on my plate. Corn bread was more like corn muffin. Too moist and cakey. Overall, not bad. Good portion to price ratio. Was too full to eat dessert. Maybe next time. For every good thing I ate, there was something else that took away from the goodness with negativity. read more

We come here at least 2 times a month. Best out of the way BBQ in the area. I gave up my Lenten promise (gave up meat) this year because of Boneheads! It was worth it!!! Best sin I ever committed. Food wasn't bad but service was... looks like they were overwhelmed with the Sunday evening attendance. Totally disorganized and very slow service. I had the ribs and my wife had the pulled pork. I didn't taste much smokiness in the ribs and didn't notice any smoke ring... pretty sure they're not smoked but good nonetheless. Pulled pork was so-so... again, no smoke. Food wasn't bad but we were expecting, from the looks of the place and advertisement, something more along the lines of real BBQ and not just ribs that had been grilled. Never heard much about this place, now that I ate there I know why. Our waitress was great, the food runner was not. She barreled through the crowded dining room and bang into everything and everyone along the way. Food: Draft beer could have been a bit colder. Pickle chips were ok, a bit over battered for my taste. My main course, the full rack of ribs was terrible. Was delivered to the table fairly warm, not anywhere near hot. They were the toughest ribs I have ever had the displeasure of coming into contact with. I should have realized before taking a bite that nothing good was coming my way when I had saw through them with a steak knife. I will not be returning to to this restaurant. read more

We don't come here too often, but whenever we do it's always a great visit. Tonight we got the pickle chips which were delicious and the fish dinner with fries and coleslaw. Everything was so good, and the service was even better. I can't remember the name of the waitress we had, but she was so attentive and sweet. I highly recommend this place to anyone. Let's see where to start. Our waitress was sweaty, the pickle chips where all batter no pickle. The ranch was runny. It took an hour & 15 minutes to get our food, in that time our waitress avoided us like we where contagious. I don't know where to start . . . Seated on a drafty porch on a cold evening and practically ignored by the wait staff. Porch was also dirty with cobwebs and chunks of dust literally hanging from the overhead fan. I had to ask for utensils twice and finally received a dirty fork. After seeing the lack of cleanliness in the dining area and the grubby flatware I shudder to think how the kitchen is kept up. Dinner was so-so. Ribs were dry and the side dishes were almost cold. Best BBQ in Ann Arbor??? Give me a break, it's not even the best BBQ in Willis! A McRib sandwich would be a better choice. After dinner we ordered drinks at the bar and watched one of the most anemic pours I have ever seen. Let's see, 90% ice, two squirts of spirits. .. yeah, that's $6.00. So: Food was barely average/service was very poor/drinks were a joke and the environment was filthy. We ordered the half rack of ribs and the brisket. There was hardly any sauce on either. The ribs were really greasy. Nice size portion of cole slaw, which was good, 2oz portion cup of beans - blah, baked potato - had to ask for butter and sour cream, fries good, corn bread good - but not hot and no butter, beer on tap was awful - tasted watered down. The waitress was an airhead, the hostess was rude. Prices too high for the portion sizes. It seemed to be more about the owners and staff than the customers. Band in the other room was okay but you couldn't get in to watch, no place to dance. One guy with a Boneheads shirt on (owner or barfly) was in our faces all night. I have ordered carry out a few times, the last two visits my order was not correct. Today I ordered over the phone with a young woman who apparently just started working there. I really enjoy the grilled zucchini & asked if it was available as it was not avail the last time I ordered. She says "oh yeah, do you want it as your large side?", not explaining what "large" meant, she sort of explains it, I go on to ask if I could order a side salad and would pay the difference in lieu of baked beans or french fries. She says "well you are going to get the sides anyway....so you may as well get them and get a side salad", which totally defeated my original question...if I could get the salad as my second side & I'd pay the difference. I ask if the order comes with bread, yeah it sure does...corn bread. I pick up the order, bring it home.....not grilled, but battered, deep fried zucchini. VERY disappointed....no cornbread, VERY disappointed. I call get the same girl on the phone, tell her about my order....and she says, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, just started working here, I'm sorry....just started as in today?? The last time I also got an apology with no offer to compensate or correct the order. She's brand new, is anyone checking her work? I said I hate to spend a lot on a meal and then not get it right, "I know, I'm sorry". I was going to ask for a manager, but by this time I just wanted to eat. Get an order wrong once, but twice? This is my first yelp and as a bbq restaurant worker I am sorry to say that we ate or didn't eat much... We ordered the bbq combo- ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and chicken. DRY! The staff took our order and we received our meal in under 5 min. can anyone say microwave is not part of smoked foods.. lol what a joke.. August 16, 2011 update on Bone Heads ribs. Did it - Do it, they were fall off the bone tender, a nice smoky BBQ taste as required and a very slight back of the throat heat. Now keep in mind I really prefer a little more heat but for up here they were as close as I have had to real down south ribs. I ordered a half rack as a start and my test and the regret was it should have been a whole rack so some could have gone home with me. The logic here is start with the full and ask for extra hot BBQ sauce on the side so the experience is complete. To all you fish lovers (me included) Lynn had the Friday night fish and trying not to become a party pooper "this is a BBQ place and NOT a fish joint" they missed on this one with it being just a notch below even standard fare and not what was the old Pickle Barrel serving / taste. The food is good but the service is terrible. The bar maid "took care" of us from her assignment of giggling it up in the bar as we sat in the dining room section. There was another server for the dining room but we were assigned the classic bar maid. I finally had to take the check to the bar to pay as she was busy entertaining.
