Quality seems to have gone downhill big time since they first started. Like they cut corners big time. The food used to be amazing. Close to authentic korean fried chicken and bulgogi that I remember eating while in South Korea. However, I visited a few days ago and the quality has severely declined. I was craving the fried chicken and pickled radishes. The quality has definitely declined. I got home to find the chicken wasn't the same. I miss the crusty crunchiness it used to have. The prices are kind of high so I chose the kids meal. It came with one piece of chicken and fries. The fries were really good so was the spicy mayo but the soy garlic drum stick was kinda of salty. Food is all take away and I guess you would consider it to be contact less. The vestibule is open enough for IMO one person and your food is given to you through a small opening that is covered with plastic. It reminded me of how your luggage gets pushed through at the airport (except this was manual). Staff are gloved and masked for your and their safety. This was only my second time at BonChon and I'm even less familiar with their food. We got the soy garlic chicken and bibimpop. The wings were fried hard like I dig and the sauce was amazing. The soy garlic bibimpop was a fairly large portion, happy that you got a fair amount of protein veggies and rice. I definitely got my fill. The staff were friendly, food was ready on time and things tasted great. Eating out for a family can add up but I suppose that is what is expected. Bonchon means my hometown or my roots, according to the Bonchon website. They are an international restaurant franchise with over 370 locations globally, of which 136 locations are in the USA. They are known for their fried chicken. My wife and I came here to try their style of Korean food and their famous fried chicken.    We ordered a Japchae, an Udon Noodles with bulgogi and a fried chicken combo. The Japchae had glass noodles, carrots, spinach, red peppers, onions, mushrooms, sesame seeds and thinly sliced marinated ribeye. It was stir-fried in a sauce that contained soy sauce, sugar, garlic and sesame oil. The sauce was pretty good except it needed a better tasting soy sauce and a little less sugar. Someone needs to do a better job of balancing the soy sauce to sugar ratio. The sauce was too sweet. Overall, it was tasty, but we've had better elsewhere. FYI, glass noodles are made from the starch of potato, mung bean and/or tapioca. They are translucent to the point where you can see through them, hence the name glass noodles. The Udon Noodle soup with bulgogi had thick wheat noodles, thinly sliced bulgogi, nori (dried sheets of seaweed), scallions and mushrooms. The noodles were cooked well and they tasted good in a typical way, but it was not fresh-made. The other ingredients were fresh and cooked properly. The broth was slightly sweet with a mild chicken broth flavor. It had a good amount of light oil floating on top. The oil was probably from the bulgogi. Overall, this dish was satisfying, but not outstanding. The broth was too mild in flavor, a little too sweet and wasn't savory. We've had better at eateries in H Marts. H Mart is a Korean grocery store chain.    The fried chicken came with a side. Either pickled radish or kimchi coleslaw. We picked pickled radish. The chicken flavors were soy garlic, spicy or half & half.  We picked half & half. It was fried with a thin crispy coating. The sauce coating was thin also. The soy garlic tasted like a mildly sweet tomato sauce. No garlic or soy flavor. Thumbs down on the mediocre flavor of the sauce. Great tasting chicken, tender and moist. It was fried very well.    The spicy fried chicken had a sauce that tasted like lots of red chili peppers in a sweet tomato sauce. It was crazy HOT, but only for a few minutes. The lack of depth in flavor was very disappointing just like the soy garlic sauce. The chicken itself was excellent.    The pickled radish was white radish cut in cube shapes. It was sweet and mildly sour. It was crunchy. 2 dimensional in flavor and not interesting, but edible.    The dining room and restrooms were very clean. The service was friendly, engaging, polite, helpful and attentive. You can't ask for more. Unfortunately, the food here tasted like  Americanized Korean food. Everything was sweet. The fried chicken was good but too pricey for the flavor. The food was good, but this is not our ideal place for Korean food. read more

I love going to Bon Chon. The fried chicken is like none other. It comes with either Soy Garlic or Spicy, and the spicy is either spicy or really spicy levels. The batter is not like traditional fried chicken batter, rather it is a little thicker and holds the sauce well. The chicken comes in wings, drummies, or tenders, and you can also opt for combinations of them. The rest of the menu is Korean food, and what I've had so far is good: bibimbap, bulgogi, calamari, etc. they also have a good garlic fries with shredded cheese on top. This is an overall rate for me: Food - ordered seafood fried rice and small order of wing half half. The rice was drenched in sesame oil, it made the rice wet and i could only taste the oil. The chicken is good. I think that was the only thing that i would go back for. Service - server did not write our order down so he got our order wrong. Only ordered for wings but came out with drums and wings - didn't return because was super hungry and said fuck it. I'll just eat it. No biggie. One thing that really made me think twice about this place tho is the way their servers are dress. Especially the female ones. Mind you. I'm a female myself and has serving experience and in my serving days my boss would not let me wear a thin yoga pants and furry flops to work. I had to knock off one star, because they shrunk the size of the chicken! Which is disappointing, considering the price remains the same. The change from chicken the size of a small burger to nuggets is ridiculous. Same great taste, only these portions aren't made for sharing. Anywho! After going to the Arlington BonChon (we've also been to Rockville), this location can be disappointing... The wings are not as crispy, although they seem larger in size (they're like jumbo size, which is good..but i tink it detracts from the flavor of the meat). The chap chae is okay, not as flavorful. And the seafood fried rice was probably the most disappointing, hobbit-sized seafood bites with a relatively bland rice. The service was also slower. We went to staples (office depot? I don't remember) and came back in 20 minutes like they told us to...but still waited another 5 or 10 when we got back. Overall it was okay, but it's hard for them because the other locations have set seemingly higher standards. Also they don't have zucchini fries :'( we will honestly probably be back because it's the closest to us, but I hope they work on some of these things. read more

Wait time might have been 15 minutes @ most. I wasn't in a rush. Wait on good food or rush & receive mediocre, I'll gladly wait. Pickled radish had a strong vinegary taste, not what I expected. Wings were aromatic. Had the inside of my car smelling sooo good, I almost pulled over! Perfect crispiness & soy garlic taste!!! However, the taste did not permeate the meat, ugh! My fix, ensure I ate skin & meat. Not sure if the restaurant's prep process includes marinating the wings, if so, I'd suggest an extended marination time. I'll give Bonchon a second chance. My heart breaks as I am writing this 1-star review on a Bonchon restaurant because Bonchon is one of my favorite restaurants (no kidding, I could eat here once a day). Do you ever had that feeling of anticipation and you patiently wait for something then you finally get to have it and it's just pure disappointment? That's literally how I felt. Location: The place is small and seating area is small. I guess given the location, there's only so much they can do. Also the "bar area" has 5 chairs...and I overheard the cashiers talking about they're getting a bar area..like are you serious? The bar area is barely there. Wait time: I came in to do a take out, it took 30 minutes. That much time for a few wings which I can understand because it's a new place and people wanna try it. Ok I give that a pass. Price: price is the same as all Bonchon, can't change that. Food: I ordered a small order of chicken tenders and small order of chicken wings both are in soy garlic flavor with 2 sides of rice. Let me start with what the chicken tenders looks like...what in the world?! The chicken tenders at other Bonchon locations look like REGULAR -sized chicken tenders. The waldorf branch chicken tenders are so small like why?! They are almost like chicken nuggets sized! The chicken wings sizes are fine so I'll pass on that. Here comes the disappointment, it didn't taste like the Bonchon I knew. I worked at the Navy Yard for a year and pretty much ate Bonchon with my coworkers once a week so I know exactly what Bonchon is. I've also tried a few locations (at least 5) and they all taste the same. I'm so disappointed. Even though it's a new place, the only thing that should be different is the staff and the location. Since its new, the wait time and service is still new to review. But not having that signature Korean fried chicken flavor of Bonchon, how do you franchise a location and not look at the quality?! Sadly, I don't recommend it to anyone. Manager/owner of this location, please read the reviews because this place might lose business before it even reaches a few months. UPDATE: I gave the place a few tries after my initial review and brought it up to 3 stars. I didn't give it a 5-star because the Bonchon experience is still not up to par compared to the Bonchon at the Navy Yard and in Fairfax even. The second time I went, I met the manager and I tried the same food I ordered plus 2 more dishes. The manager was nice enough to give me that meal for free for helping him out with a previous review I made. The chicken was so much better. Mr. Wu told me that they started using a different recipe and have been doing things differently which makes me so happy because I do not mean to write a negative review but only as a constructive criticism and he took that as a learning lesson!!! Nice size restaurant with plenty of seating both indoors and outside. They also have a bar without alcohol for those that want to seat themselves. I have yet to sit in to eat so I can't comment on the service, however, I've only ever seen a handful of people seated each time I've gone so there definitely should be an issue getting a seat. I always order the soy wings when I go and they are still my favorite thing there. Still too scared to try the hot ones based on other reviews I have read. On my last visit I ordered the japchae and the shrimp dumplings. I love the glass noodles but wasn't obsessed with the garlic sauce so I probably won't get the japchae again. I had a love hate relationship with the shrimp dumplings. They reminded me of fried scallops because of the consistency, but the sauce was good. OH MY GOSH! This place was AWESOME! Food came out and everything was HUGE. Other Yelpers talked about how big the portions were, but the pictures did not do them justice. THEY DID NOT LIE! Soo much food and the chicken pieces are huge! I got a "small" 10 piece and I eat a TON and I couldn't finish it. I got 'half and half' chicken strips. I just recently got braces so no biting into things for me, thats why I got the strips. Very pleased with them! *BIG* I love spicy food. So when our server said that Spicy was pretty hot, I got excited :) And man she wasn't kidding! Towards the end it got a little uncomfortable. Thank god for those pickled radishes, but still, I was dying. The Soy Ginger was delicious! But after a while it got a little boring, so Im glad I was able to get half and half. It was a perfect mix of flavors. With my strips I got a side of the kimchi coleslaw. SHUT THE FRONT DOOR! This is 100% what will bring me back again and again. It was fan-freaking-tastic!!! Like, not much else to say about it except that it was great. Oh! We also started our meal with the Salmon Roll/Ball (Im a bit backwards writing this review). Anyway, It was great!! It was very rich and creamy. Lot of Salmon. I think the way it was made was, the avocado was on the bottom and cucumber and imitation crab on to of that, with salmon on the very top. My description sounds horrible but it really had this sushi type vibe to it. It was wonderful! They are opening one in Norfolk, a bit closer to where I live than here. And I can't wait! Since I was in the mood for wings, I stopped here for the first time. Upon the cashier's suggestion, I ordered the half and half wings which consists of half the wings in soy garlic and the other half in spicy. I also ordered the plain fried rice, which was pricey at $10! The wings were made to order and were fresh and hot when I dug in at home. I preferred the spicy wings..it was definitely spicy. The soy garlic wings were meh--too heavy on the soy. I enjoyed that the wings were crispy. The wings come with a small side of coleslaw that lacked any flavor. First visit to Bonchon with hubs. Service was excellent! I ordered the japchae and it was some of the best that I've had. We shared the shrimp dumplings, which were scrumptious...OMG! I've been a patron of Bonchon (domestic and internationally) for quite some time and have been satisfied with the food and service. Even as the prices have skyrocketed I have still managed to get my soy garlic chicken fix pre-pandemic and post pandemic without issue until now. I placed an order for pick-up, grabbed my wings & headed home. I get home, open the box to find miniature wings that had mainly drums. Last time that I checked, the menu offered wings or drums and I knew I had ordered wings- so why are there drums in my box? I can understand one or two drums. Also, I am not sure if the chicken has gotten smaller at nearby Bonchon establishments but the the one in Waldorf, MD the chicken size has drastically change from jumbo to baby wing dings & I think the price should definitely reflect the change. read more

I don't know what has happened -- but there has been a big drop off in the kitchen. The fried rice has always been phenomenal and I hadn't minded paying the expensive price. But, wow, this last order was extremely disappointing. Very, very soggy and mushy. The rice grains were so soaked / oversaturated with too much sauce, I almost ordered some plain white rice to mix in and sponge out all the extra moisture. The japchae dish is also not like it used to be. It now has sort of a soupy or watery texture to it. Some people may like their rice and japchae like that, but count me out. The main item in the menu is their chicken, but I can't speak to that because it's not what I order there. I usually walk out of there paying $30+ per meal, this last time not being an exception. It's a rather expensive place compared to other places around town. But,I don't know if I'll be coming now any time soon. read more
