I ordered through Uber Eats and received the worst chicken I've ever had. It was incredibly dry, over-cooked and had very little sauce on it. I've dined at other Bonchon locations and never had this issue. What happened? Is it because I ordered it for delivery? Is it just this location? Or has Bonchon declined in quality over time? It used to be so good. Truly disappointed and won't eat here again. They should be ashamed to send an order out like that! read more

This is the worst Bonchon ever. I ordered fried rice without meat and they gave me plain rice. I asked for the veggies as the menu stated and all they add was onions and 2 small pieces of bell peppers - literally 2 pieces. To top it off, It had no flavor other than the onions. Don't offer vegetables if you're only adding onions. Just say onions. Oh, and there were no eggs. The chicken here is smaller sized than any other Bonchon. The wings on the menu are just small party wings and the drumsticks are small too. One piece barely had any meat. The chicken was dry and over cooked and there was no the sauce on it. We had to ask to get more sauce added on. I heard customers coming in to pick up orders and they all had complaints so it was not only me. I'll drive to Newark next time where they are much more consistent and not cheap on their offerings. Or Vons if I can't drive there. read more

We came here after golfing at Monarch Golf Course. It was an excellent choice. We ate family style. There was a chicken wing special - $24 for 24 wings. We had the variety - soy garlic, spicy and regular. We also ordered japjae, crispy seasoned fries and kimchi bacon fried rice. Everything was excellent. The spicy was really spicy so I'm just Warning you now. The seasoned fries were delicious! I could have eaten an order myself. The japjae and fried rice were a little small but still very tasty. The chicken wings were excellent. Very crispy. And each wing had the joint piece we usually don't get. We also had two pitchers of Sapporo. Each was $17. Bill of $110 wasn't bad for 7 people. Why would you ever go to KFC if you can go to Bonchon? Once I bit into this perfectly crisped and flavorful Korean fried chicken, I will never go back to dry, greasy, fattier KFC. Heck, when I hear KFC, I no longer think Kentucky Fried Chicken. Excuse me, it's KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN now!!! Bonchon all the freakin' way! My mom and I were thrilled that this place opened up in downtown San Leandro. I've been here on weekends and on weekdays after work, and it's always busy with customers in here. On a weekday night, service is (obviously) a lot quicker, and there can be quite a bit of a wait on weekends, but that's to be expected. The waitstaff is super nice! When ordering fried chicken, I prefer the combo, so that I can get BOTH legs and wings. Soy garlic is the best flavor too! As of March 2019, they started offering sweet crunch, which I haven't tried, but when I asked our waiter what his choice would be between soy garlic and sweet crunch, he said soy garlic by far. You also get an appetizer between the radish or coleslaw, and I always choose radish. It is so, so bomb. Bibimbap is also pretty good! I've been to a decent amount of Bon chon locations from Boston, MA to Berkeley, CA. No line at this location when I came. The chicken is so good! I always stick to the spicy flavor wings or combos. The drum stick is massive in size, actually, the combo I ordered the wings were shockingly big, too. My bf orders the boneless, I tried a piece and just thought it had a little too much batter for the amount of chicken in it. It was okay, but not my cup of tea. Radish, good. White rice, good. Cole slaw, okay, slightly on the sour side. (I've had it at different locations and it never had this sourness) Customer service, good. The taste of wings and chicken strips are decent. However, they over-fry the drumsticks and those are extremely dry. Never ordering those again. The caesar salad which is not on the menu, but available is very good and cuts the fat from all the fried foods. Tried the bulgogi tacos for the first time and those were tasty. I would order again. Came here with a few of my coworkers on a Thursday afternoon. We all ordered different items from the menu. I ordered the bulgogi and my coworkers heard my order it. We all saw our server write it down. Twenty minutes after all of our food came out we still waiting for the bulgogi. We asked our sever to which he responded "you didn't order it" My coworkers simultaneously said " he did order it and you wrote it down" confused look on his face he went to double check. I guess he forgot to input it in the system because I saw him tapping on the screen. It finally came out ten minutes later. I've been to other Bonchon locations where the service is much better. Here, we weren't asked if we needed a refill on our water. If we needed an extra plate for the chicken bones. If we needed extra napkins. We ended reaching for napkins from the table next to us. Our server or any other employee never checked up on us after our food came out. I love their food and the portions are big. They just need to be more attentive and step it up a bit. This was a 3.5 star experience. Came in just before 5 on a Tuesday and there were three other tables seated, but the place was pretty quiet and not super busy. I noticed quickly that service here was inattentive; it took a few minutes of sitting with no menus, within clear sight of the bar and the waiter working the greeting desk, for someone to finally come around with them. We knew we definitely wanted to try the chicken, so we went with the small (12 piece) boneless wings, half soy garlic, half spicy ($13.95). We also got the japchae ($14.95), pork buns ($12.95, three to an order), seasoned fries ($7.95), and steamed rice ($2.50). Chicken: Pieces were smaller than I was expecting but pretty tasty, flavor wise. The spicy definitely had some heat, but the overall flavor of the soy garlic was a little better. Both were good and I'd order both again, but the chicken was just bordering on being too dry. Japchae: I can't speak to whether this is a faithful representation of japchae but I can say that it was good. Bell pepper, scallions, onions, beef, carrots, and sesame seeds all mixed in with the noodles. Flavorful, fresh, and light. This was one of my favorite dishes of the meal. Pork buns: The star of the meal. Super delicious pork belly in Bonchon's soy garlic sauce, with slices of cucumber, coleslaw, spicy mayo, and katsu sauce. The buns were so soft and all of the different flavors and spices bouncing around worked so well together. Would absolutely order again. Seasoned fries: Somewhat disappointing. Tossed with Bonchon's house seasoning, parmesan, and parsley flakes, but all we could taste was the parmesan. The fries were crispy and cooked just fine, I was just hoping that these wouldn't be so one-dimensional in flavor. The food came fast and almost all at once, which I really appreciated. But once we got the food, no one ever came back around to check on us even though the restaurant didn't get any busier and a lot of the staff were just sort of hanging around talking. And when we were ready for the check, the servers were all out of sight except for the one guy behind the bar that we had to flag down until he noticed us trying to make contact from our table. Overall not a bad first impression. The food was better than the service but there were a couple of improvements that could've been made (chicken was sort of dry, fries didn't taste like anything but parmesan). We came here last Sunday for late lunch. We always wanted to visit here since they opening. We got seated right away when we entering the shop. the shop not busy at all. Their menu was so different from the last time we visited on another Bonchon in San Jose. We ordered medium combo set for wings and drumsticks and also fried onion rings. We didn't wait too long for our food to get ready. The food was pretty hot when they arrived. The wings and drumsticks were hot and crunchy when biting them. We're really satisfied with our meal. The spiciness wasn't too spicy as used to be which is great. The drumsticks they served were pretty big. I highly recommend the onion rings, it's pretty good and addicted once you eating. The staffs and service were nice and attentive whenever you need them. They will pour water on your glass running low. The parking here really depends on what time you come, but still shouldn't be a problem to find parking. read more

I've been here a few times with coworkers and we order the usual-- kimchi fried rice and soy garlic chicken. This time I went to introduce the place to my kids. We ordered the sweet chicken, soy garlic, plain fried rice and fried shrimp shumai. We LOVED the plain fried rice that we ordered a second and LOVED the soy garlic chicken. The sweet chicken is not as good as the soy garlic but that could just be preference. The shumai was okay but with mustard sauce on top. Excited that we are able to dine in again! They are follow COVID protocols very well. Although it's a small place to begin with, they set up their tables far apart and all the staff is wearing mask. Hand sanitizers are provided at the front. Service: I thought the service here was on point! The servicer was very attention and very kind. I know we took some time decided on what we wanted, but she checked back in every so often and was very patient with us. The other service made sure our water was filled and that we had everything that we needed. Excellent service! Food: Wings/Drumstick - I only got the try the soy and garlic sauce and it was phenomenal! They warned us that their spicy was pretty spicy so we decided to forego it this time around. Came here because it was new and closer to us than the one in Newark. I haven't been back to a Bonchon restaurant in a while! I came here with 2 other people and it was around 3:00PM. Not your normal lunch or early dinner times but hey, no waiting right?! The restaurant looks like its decorated to look like a bar, they even have a BAR. What... After going in, we got seated and had the menus handed to us. Menu looked different. They are in sheet protectors. I remember it was laminated, never mind. Let's talk about the food. You have to go here for the chicken and that's what we did. Ordered the large and a side of japchae. The last time we went to a bonchon, I remember that the chicken was overly breaded and fried. This time it was not bad. Pretty juicy and good. Overall...they are all kinda salty. Good thing you can peel off the skin, I know, its the good part. But I don't like prune lips. Place was not packed, was not sure whether to order take out or dine in. Scoped the menu for awhile, it had several sizes of fried chicken options of wings, drumsticks, boneless chickens, chicken poppers with their optional sauces of extra spicy, soy sauce, garlic spicy. Other items on menu are fried rice with several selections of fillings such as tofu, chickens, and pork, Their chicken sliders look delicious. Of course, at a Korean fusion, they would also serve bimbitbop and spicy tofu soup. Decided to dine in to taste the freshness of their special spicy fried chicken. Definitely chicken wings are huge, nicely crispy, but not overly battered, meat was tender, and moist. The spicy gaze was fabulous with a hint of sweetness and spicy sauce that compliment each favors. You can also select a side of cole slaws or picked radish to cool off the heat in the chicken. I was so excited when I heard that San Leandro was getting a Bonchon that when Hazel suggested it for dinner, I jumped at the chance to finally try it. With a choice of soy garlic, spicy, or combo of both, we went for a large soy garlic combo of wings and drumsticks which was enough to feed 4. It comes with a choice of pickled radish or cole slaw so we went with the pickled radish, what is normally accompanied with this type of KFC. The meat was moist and flavorful and the batter light and crisp, the perfect combination. I was not impressed by the bulgogi Korean tacos though as the one I had (middle one in the picture) was full of lettuce and filler with barely any bulgogi. I had to eat half the taco before getting my first bite of bulgogi and then two bites later, it ended again on the other end. For that price and an extra dollar for bulgogi, I would've expected more. I hope it was more of a one off for my taco and they will work on better even distribution. However, I am hesitant on giving those another try just in case that is the norm. read more

The bibimbap w hot stoneware was delicious. I love the yellow pickled radishes. The spicy chicken was not super special and I'd have preferred bulbogi but husband can't have onions. Henry made sure the bibimbap wouldn't make my husband sick. The strips were delicious with thin breading (which henry told us about, vs the boneless wings which would have thicker breading but more flavor). Nice restaurant near downtown area of San Leandro. Quite busy for a weeknight. We were seated right away. As usual, there are options of spicy, soy garlic and here they have flaky crumble. There are quite a few side orders to choose from, and more options like bulgogi fried rice and the spicy rice cakes besides the regular crispy Korean Fried Chicken. Food was good, but nothing really outstanding. Service was great and very friendly. The Location has been Freshly Remodeled , Lots of Seating , Beer Bar and Several LCD TVs for Entertainment !!!!! I was brought my Blue Moon Garnished with a Orange Slice . So Refreshing !!! Yum. Next Out was my Soy Garlic Drumsticks with a Side Of Coleslaw . Talk about a Flavor Explosion !!! Yum !!! Perfect Crunch also !! Last but not least .Was my Bulgogi !!! This is the only Bonchon in the Bay Area that does it right. Efficient and very kind staff. I know people complain bc they have to wait in line but uh...it's a pandemic. They're doing their best. Don't act like you ain't gotta wait anywhere else you go With that said, their chicken is prepared just right every time. It would probably be even more crispy fresh from the kitchen .... but they did not disappoint. House fried rice with chicken (extra dollar) was good. Nothing spectacular but it was pretty good. Bibimbap was good. We added the beef ($2 extra) Like the fried rice, tasty but nothing mind blowing. The chicken wings is the clear winner. You MUST get this if you are here. I've been here 3 times now and each time it has gotten worse and worse. The first time I went the taste of the chicken was the best. It was juicy and the chicken was cooked to perfection. It was perfectly covered in sauce and not all all overcooked. The skin was nice and crispy and was honestly the best KFC I've ever had. The only thing that went wrong was they originally lost our order and then got the size of our order wrong, which they quickly remedied. The second time I came here, I had high standards since I had such great chicken the first time. However, the chicken was not as good as the first time I came here. It was well flavored, however it was a little overcooked so the inside was relatively dry. I chalked it off to a bad batch and gave them one more try. The last time was honestly the last straw of me ever wanting to eat here again. The chicken was not covered in sauce at all and was way overcooked, causing it to be way too dry. Honestly this really put me off especially since this is not exactly a cheap place to eat wings. It was a Togo order and honestly it wasn't even worth turning around to complain about. Bonchon has increased their prices and decreased the sizes of their chicken so now paying more for less food. Smaller drumsticks. "Wings" are now small drummettes and small wings. It's like they took a regular sized wing and cut it in half. So you get "more" pieces but the quantity of wings is actually less than before. Taste is still pretty good but I probably won't be going back anytime soon since it's too expensive for too little food now. read more

Wanted some jhap chae, but didn't feel like driving all the way to Oakland to my favorite spot. Made the mistake of trying Bonchon here in San Leandro. Mistake. If you want to pay for a double serving of bulgogi in your jhap chae only to find out after you've driven home that there wasn't even enough meat for a regular serving, then this is the place to go. Called the restaurant after we got home asking them to refund the cost of the extra serving of meat, got a call an hour later from the manager saying that he spoke to the chef and the chef said he put in the extra meat. So I'm randomly lying over $4.95? I regret not taking a picture more than I regret the tip I left when I ordered. Definitely will never go back. Even towards the end of dinner, the crispness of the batter remained. Also the meat was still juicy, thus this made it a little messy and very delicious. Definitely the star of the menu! We also ordered a bulgogi tacos. Great flavor and the soft taco held up even though this was the last to be eaten. I'm a huge fan of Bonchon chicken but maybe it's this location that I get a weird feedback from? Before COVID-19, my family and I used to come here and order the family meal which comes with chicken, sides, and a fried rice which filled us up perfectly. Now, during the pandemic, they stated they don't participate in the family meal and I was confused because months before we were literally ordering the family meal. When I asked the manager why, she said this location never participated? Fast forward to now, I ordered through grub hub for boneless chicken, and I was given bone-in chicken. Since I work in a hospital, I tend not to want to use my hands when I eat, so I was disappointed they didn't get the order right since it was the only thing I had ordered. I'm they also only gave me 6 chickens instead of the 8 I had ordered. Not sure if I'll come back to this location. Bonchon is my favorite place to go for Korean fried chicken. This newer location is no exception. My go to is the soy garlic wings. If you get the drumsticks, the marinade doesn't seem to reach the inside, so the meat is more bland there. Try it with the pickled radish! They compliment each other really well. I decided to try the tteokbokki here, as it's something I've been really enjoying recently, and it was amazing, but so spicy. Definitely try it if you want to add on a spicy dish to your order. I have been waiting for this bonchon location to open for the past six months so imagine my joy when I saw it was finally having its soft opening! After two unsuccessful (they're not open for lunch yet and the other time we came 30 min too early), we FINALLY made it during their soft opening hours. Interiors feels like a modern sports bars with the walls lined with TVs with various games playing. It was already packed with people when we arrived at 8. People were READY for that crack chicken. We ordered beer and the medium sized (10 piece) drumsticks to have the full Korean experience of "chimek" (chicken + mekju, which is beer in Korean).... a popular meal combo. My first incredible bonchon experience was almost 8 years ago in manhattan's ktown. I love the double fried crispy skin and San Leandros's Bonchon did not disappoint. Each of the chicken orders come with a side of pickled radish or coleslaw. I recommend the radish because it offsets the greasiness of the chicken and also promotes better digestion (according to Korean moms). This is different than the other Korean fried chicken dishes offered in the Bay Area. Such as at Maejoo local to San Leandro or Bowl'd up in Oakland who also has good kfc but not the double fried crisp good. Highly recommend and highly addicting. read more

I've finally had a chance to try Bonchon. After hearing my friends rave about the one in the South Bay, I was excited to hear they were opening in San Leandro. I chose to wait until after the soft opening phase, so all the staffing issues could be worked out and there would be permanent hours. After looking through the pictures and determining I wouldn't be able to find out the hours, I decided to just go downtown. Figured the worst that could happen is that the restaurant would be closed and I'd be checking something else out. I arrived at Bonchon and scored a parking space in the front. Walked in and saw they had a bunch of people there munching on chicken and watching the Warriors preseason game. There's 3 or 4 tv's, one of them is a tad ahead of the others, so that was fun. I was greeted pretty quickly and given a menu as I wanted to take the order to go. I ordered a small half and half with cole slaw and fries. The chicken was crispy and flavorful. Was it oh so juicy? Not really, but it was still really good. The spicy was a little much for me, but the soy was really really good. The cole slaw portion was a joke as the container wasn't even full. Decent enough flavor. And the fries could've been fried longer as there weren't crispy enough for my liking and borderline soggy. 4 stars for chicken and service. -1 star for disappointing sides. read more

I came in after work and ordered popcorn shrimp and chicken with seasoned fries and I'm telling you I spent 40 bucks and it wasn't good at all, the shrimp was more battery then the actual shrimp. They gave me all drums and it didn't have the same taste as the one I go to in Petaluma.. I'm very disappointed because all the money I spent and it didn't come out good at all. I'm always a fan of their chicken wings! During and prior to COVID, I would just order thru yelp and it'll be ready for pick up within 15 minutes. Always an ease. I have gotten their spicy flavor wings several times. Sometimes the meat would be a little dry and overcooked, but the past two times have been great. I do wish it's bit more juicy. I always ask for an extra coating of sauce. Wings are big (unlike the tiny ones you would see in typical wing places). Their 20 pieces average out to the best bang for the buck.
