I love Bonchon's Charlotte! So when I saw one in Katy, on the way to Houston, I knew I had to stop and pick some up. Right away my brain was doing comparisons and my expectations were high. It was a cafe style restaurant. Charlotte has a sake bar feel to it. The avocado salmon was the same and delicious however the spicy chicken was overly spicy Almost unpalatably spicy. Disappointed. I'm used to a slow burn and not an instant lip sweller. I had bought a mix and my solution was to put a piece of each and alternate bites to stem the heat. They served ranch and blue cheese with the chicken ugh this is Korean chicken but whatever. They packaged my to go order unceremoniously in styrofoam. I called ahead and bought a large amount to "gift" and again, expected the cute little boxes that help maintain the crunch. Instead they sweated all the way to San Antonio and were lackluster. I had asked the waitress about it before I left and she said they ran out. So in hindsight, I wouldn't have placed such a large order and the quality and taste is not on par with what I've experienced before. The ambiance could also be better. Visited this location this time last year. It was great! It was my second time visiting the franchise (the first time in Sugarland). The wings are amazing! We chose the Soy Garlic half flats/half drums. These wings were almost like a sweet and sour which is a Tteokbokki was super spicy but for some reason I couldn't stop eating it! So bring on the water and get ready to eat this great dish! It was just my boyfriend and I and this filled us up pretty well. As I was watching Crash Landing On You, and I was thinking, "Dang, some korean fried chicken sounds good right now..." Bon Chon it is! So that's what I did, I got me some fried chicken! I've had Bon Chon in California, and my previous experience was phenomenal. So I was really excited to try the chain location in Katy. I placed an order for the drumsticks, small size (5 pieces), plain (breaded with no sauce)...an order of medium size (20 pieces) soy garlic wings, and an order of the takoyaki. Order was ready on time, service was quick and friendly. && The drive home smelled amazing! Unfortunately when I got home, the chicken was over fried and everything was just very underwhelming.... They give you the option of getting both flavors. They have soy garlic and their spicy. The soy garlic is delicious! The spicy reminds me of straight kim chi flavored, which is also good. What makes their chicken a standout is their skin. It's SOOOO CRISPY. We also added on an order of their seasoned fries. I must say however they are frying items back there it's a god send. These fries are some of the best I've ever had, at ANY type of restaurant. Finally, we added on a side of kim chi, this item you can pass on. Overall, if this place was closer to me, I'd be there at least once a week. The twenty piece all flats with half soy garlic and half hot. It's the go to order and pair that with an order of fries. Now the reason this place is a hit or miss for me is the policy on the soy garlic sauce. Sometimes they get the right amount of soy garlic on the chicken. Other times it's just not enough. I think the soy garlic sauce is perfect over the fries. But some waiters have turned down my request to have it poured over because it "isn't allowed". But it's the best sauce ever. The table next to us told us to get the wings, so that's what we did. It appeared those diners had a mix of legs and wings and I could see where the legs would not have as much flavor as the wings. We ordered the wings as an appetizer and a couple of Korean dishes: bolgagi and a salmon ball. The wings were very crispy and tasty. You are given a choice of two sauces and one is a slightly spicier version of the other. I would order the wings again. The bolgagi was served like fajitas. Very tasty beef with vegetables. The salmon ball was huge, and consisted of salmon, cucumber, and tons of spicy mayo. Both dishes were delicious and are recommended. Service was friendly and good. The salmon ball was supposed to be seared but all I could taste was burned salmon on the outside. The inside was mainly filled with cucumbers and imitation crab meat. What took me by surprise was that as I was looking around, what most people ordered wasn't the chicken, it was the other dishes like the sliders and fried rice. It made me wonder if I made a mistake in ordering the fried chicken. When it came out, the flavor was exactly what I remembered from the BonChons in other part of the country, but it was missing the freshness. I came in with friends and family for dinner before an escape room event and we chose this place because it's close by. The spicy fried chicken has a kick! It was also more than I can eat in one sitting because I had to pack some to go. The skin is crispy and each bite into it, you can hear it crackling between each chew. *sigh* major disappointment....I love KFC and was so excited when I heard Bonchon was opening a Katy location, but when we finally tried it I was so sad! We came here on a Tuesday, the day before grand opening, around 5pm, no line. There were quite a few customers inside already and more kept coming during our meal. We ordered the 10 piece strips to share and got half soy garlic and half spicy. Our food came out surprisingly fast (compared to dak and bap, which takes the entire 30 minutes), but words cannot describe my shock when our plate arrived. The 10 pieces of strips came in 10 different sizes and just by looking at them you can tell that the smaller pieces were a serious case of over fried. Yes, there were 10 pieces of strips, more like 12, but some of the "strips" were literally a quarter the size of big ones. When I inquired about why there was such a large discrepancy between strip sizes, the waitress look at me dumbfounded and then went on to say "it comes in a bag like that." Uh, what? We then proceeded to try the chicken strips, and just as expected, the small pieces were over fried and super dry. I have to say though the large pieces were pretty spot on, moist on the inside and crispy on the outside, and I really enjoyed the soy garlic flavor, hence the three stars. The spicy flavor was extremely spicy, and my weak sauce palate could barely eat half a piece. Even my husband who normally loves spicy couldn't get past 3 pieces (but he claims it's because he has been living with me). The complimentary pickled radish was very bland, I feel like it needs more vinegar, more sugar, and more salt, but we ate all of it anyway. I think Bonchon has potential, but right now it's just not there yet. I'll probably return in a few months just to give it another try (hopefully they've smoothed out all the kinks by then). My husband thought this would be a good place to get some korean fried chicken so we went. Man this place sucks, its like eating panda express for Chinese food, def not authentic. It was literally like fast food. I know to usually stick to the asian restaurants on grand parkway or just a restaurant that serves authentic korean fried chicken but we wanted to try something new. Anyways my husband ordered wings, there was like 6 small drummettes and wings, and then 3 huge drumsticks that looked more like turkey legs. He said they were pretty dry. as for me I ordered the fried rice with bulgogi.... which leads to the sucky ass customer service. The lady thought she was good remembering everything so we were like ok; she instead brought me chicken fried rice, she forgot to bring napkins, or the drinks, and only brought stuff when would remind her. She was more preoccupied gossiping with the other employees. Once she noticed I was getting irritated with her service she insisted on bringing me bulgogi which I declined bec my rice had already taken a long time. she still brought it and once she did bring it it was like a little bowl with some tiny ass pieces (almost as if that was the only thing left in the back) the only thing ok was the fries. Low and behold that the owner went out of his way saying I used abrasive language and called my job trying to grt me fired rather than taking accountability for his restaurant not to mention his own staff was complaining about him and how he had them working with the ac barely working. There must be tons of calories, but nothing to be enjoyed in the least. The sweet fried chicken actually had SOME semblance of flavor. But it's as mediocre as chicken you would find at a run-of-the-mill Chinese buffet: edible, but ultimately dissatisfying and not worth the calories. I always place my order for curbside. Sometimes they bring it out, sometimes you have to call them or go inside because they don't answer. The wings are fantastic and I ordered 20 wings. Half spicy, half regular soy. I arrived they ran out of the spicy sauce so they made my order all soy without asking me. The chicken had an "old, fried- too many times in dirty grease, with zero flavor" taste. The rubbery texture reminded me of my own failed attempts to heat fried chicken in the microwave. So, I was not about to waste calories on eating this stuff. I thought, let's feed it to the kids. Without warning, I shared the feast with the kiddos. My brother and I ate here the other day for lunch. Not wanting g a very big meal, we split a bowl of edamame and then split a small lunch wing n chicken leg combo. I luv me some wings and this Asian style is very good. Very crispy and big, not those little one you get at some of chain wing places. They don't do them naked, but a very light coating. Two sauces - spicy and a garlic. Spicy was hot. Garlic was garlicy. But mixed the two and it was tasty. Other dishes we saw looked good so I await my next visit. I wish they had more locations. Our first time there was couple weeks ago on a Saturday night. It was busy but what made the wait longer was some staff called in that night. There were two working the floor along with the owner that came in to help out. Anyway those things happen and other than that we enjoyed our food and service. Larger than I thought being they were under Starters. Chicken Katsu, very good flavor but just a tad dry. Wife enjoyed her Udon noddle soup, flavorful and right temp for her. We came back this past Monday 3/8 for lunch this time. About five tables occupied and no hostess at the door or waitstaff on the floor so we seated ourselves. While seated we did notice the owner in the store seated with another gentleman. After what seemed an appropriate amount of time and still no waitstaff I got our menus from hostess station. We could hear talking and laughing from kitchen so at least everyone seemed in a good mood. Finally our waitress came and took our order. I again ordered the Korean chicken tacos but as my entree this time. They were just as flavorful as before. Wife ordered the Combo wings and drums. She received two large drums and four smaller size drums and flats. The two larger drums were crispy and tender. The smaller drums and flats seemed to be over cooked. The skin didn't have the lightness and crispiness to it and they were dry. The waitress was polite, friendly and attentive.
