While in town for a funeral, my friend gave me a nostalgia tour through Shepherdstown, Charles Town, and Harpers Ferry, where I grew up. One of her first instructions was clear: we have to stop at Bolivar Bread--and she insisted I try the Pretzel Samosa. When we arrived, I had a flashback to when the building used to be King's Pizza. I knew the owner back then and went to school with his kids, so the space already carried fond memories for me. Walking in now, I was immediately impressed--the display of breads, the open kitchen, and the warm, cozy vibe made it feel both fresh and familiar. The service only added to the experience. Everyone seemed genuinely friendly, and the person who helped us was chatty, welcoming, and offered some great suggestions. It made the visit feel personal, and I enjoyed the interaction just as much as the food. We ordered right away. Along with the Pretzel Samosa, I couldn't resist a Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie. The few outdoor tables were full, so we sat on the steps, eating and people-watching. The Pretzel Samosa completely blew me away. I asked for it warmed but worried it might turn tough as it cooled--yet the very last bite was just as soft and perfect as the first. The flavor was out of this world. I often order Aloo Naan back home in Colorado Springs (with potatoes and peas), but this went beyond anything I've tried--the pretzel aspect took it to a whole new level. Honestly, if I could have a dozen shipped to my door, I would. The cookie was enormous, and I nibbled on it for the next few days. It stayed soft, and the brown butter flavor elevated a classic chocolate chip cookie in a way that's hard to put into words. Love this little bakery. We came twice for breakfast and I tried the pepperoni roll and the potato samosa roll. Both are made inside a pretzel roll and are delicious. I probably liked the pepperoni roll better, but they were both good. Hubby got a cinnamon roll both times and he loved it. We also picked up a lavender shortbread cookie and a sourdough loaf to take home. We absolutely loved the lady working at the counter. I didn't catch her name but she was quirky and so friendly. Love love love her. It's a cute little bakery and a pick-up place. No tables to eat at inside, but they do have a parking lot, so that's nice. Friends and I spent the weekend in HF and tried this bakery. The person at the register (I didn't catch their name, but they had red glasses iirc and wore a headscarf) was so incredibly personable and was full of recommendations for points of interest. The sheetza with ramps, asparagus, and ham was delicious!! The focaccia was amazing too. I'm going to be dreaming about that sheetza though. Definitely a highlight of the trip. It is a working bakery, not a cafe, so there's no indoor seating and just a couple of tables outside, but we happily sprawled along the steps out front. This place was an absolute gem! read more

Stopped by to kickoff our day trip from DC to Harpers Ferry. Great way to start, they have lots of baked goods well past early morning. Seems they focus on bread. We got one of their filled pretzel rolls, a lavender shortbread and maple scone. Everything was good, but the pretzel roll was cold (like colder than room temp) and I wish they had warmed it up. Also, they only have drip coffee, no espresso (strange choice). Otherwise fine! Nice folks running the shop and cute interior. read more

I am in shock! This is one my favorite bakeries in the world. I am from New York and went to school in France. I also love Korean bakeries. I like to think I know a good bakery when I find one. I did not expect to find one so good in this little town. I stopped in for breakfast. I had a potato Samosa roll that was out of this world. I also bought three cookies that were three of the best cookies I've ever eaten. I went back later before leaving and spent 100 bucks on stuff to bring home. In traveling about, I always try to find a local bakery. When seeing Harpers Ferry, if you miss the turn for the NHP parking lot and take the next right-hand turn on Union Street, you will directly come across Bolivar Bread Bakery. Check its opening hours and go! We bought the cinnamon raisin sourdough and the "everything bagel" sourdough. (Note if you get it sliced, you can start sampling once you get into the car/on a bike!) It's small shop with limited outdoor seating but there are steps you could sit on outside. A really great place to go. read more

How have I never tried Bolivar Bread Bakery before?! The moment you walk in you can smell the bread baking! The staff is so nice, and they do have street parking out front (which is def a plus in Harper's Ferry)! The coconut macaroon was huge and delicious! Not overly sweet, the perfect amount of chocolate, and paired perfectly with the coffee! It was also toddler approved by my son haha. This place is a must stop if you're in the area. It's located right outside of the main center of town. My boyfriend and I stopped in on a Saturday morning and grabbed a pepperoni pretzel roll and a sourdough chocolate chip cookie. I was looking online and it looked like those were the best two choices try out. I'm happy I did. They were both delicious. The pepperoni pretzel roll was a hefty little bread, stuffed with meat and cheese. It was delicious, the pretzel itself super fresh, and the taste of a spot on. I don't think I had actually ever heard of a sourdough chocolate chip cookie before coming into the bakery, but that was delicious as well. It was super chewy on the inside and crispy on the outside. It just had a very slight hint of the sourdough and all the flavors went well together. If I was staying longer in the area I would've definitely try it out some of her breads. They looked fantastic. This is definitely a small shop mostly grab and go. They do have two small tables outside, which is where my boyfriend and I sat to enjoy her treats before walking down to the downtown part of the area. Highly recommend them! read more

The food here is INCREDIBLE!! You must try the pretzel pepperoni roll.. it's an 11/10. Their brown butter chocolate chip cookies are unbelievable! Everyone who works here is so nice and attentive! Harpers Ferry hasn't had something like this until relatively recently, but this local bakery seems a winner. A small store, but one which offered mouthwatering variety. I got a pretzel samosa roll for the road, which was an unusual creation, but every bit as salty and savory as it sounds. I can't quite remember what the sourdough I ordered was, but it has some seeds in it and it is delicious. There were some nice beverages and local items on sale as well, but the taste of fresh-baked bread is the perfect conclusion to a day of hiking on nearby slopes. read more

A great stop if you're looking for things to do around the Harper's Ferry area. It's only a twenty-ish minute walk from the main section of town, and I found it to be very walkable. The loaf of bread I got was appropriately Halloween-themed, shaped in the form of a very friendly ghost. The outside was crisp while the inside was cheesy and soft. I've been to over 40 states (traveled from WA State); and have stopped at hundreds of amazing bakeries--but this ladies and gentlemen, IS. THE. BEST! I got the GF Amaretti cookie and OH MY GOSH...absolutely died and went to heaven!!!! I literally stopped in my tracks while eating there and ended up buying FOUR MORE (and yes I did eat the second cookie once I got home). Y'all, the cookie was RIDICULOUS!!!! I have never in my life tasted something so darn delicious. I ate it while sipping on my cold brew which was perfect with their caramel syrup and oat milk! Will, who I took a selfie with made the cookie as his senior project at culinary school. Will was fantastic, and deserves all the praise for his hard work. Everything else at the bakery looked absolutely mouth watering by the smell of it. I almost risked it all (I have celiac) to take a sample of the GLUTEN DELIGHTS but the cookie sufficed. This bakery is beyond cute, had other fantastic buys including veteran made jams and honey (which I also bought). I am around WV for the next couple months, and am already planning a trip back before driving back to the west coast. I CANNOT WAIT to be back and see if Will has more fun gluten free creations! UPDATE: I gave my last two cookies away to my buddies and they also agree the cookie was a slice of heaven. We were visiting harpers ferry for the weekend and our accommodations were dangerously close to bolivar bakery. We ended up stopping by basically every day and sampled a variety of options all of which impressed us. The shop itself is small with only two outdoor tables for seating but some people also sat and ate on the stairs outside. They sold a few local products in addition to their bakery items and I enjoyed getting to see the bakers working behind the counter. Everyone who served us was extraordinarily polite and friendly including providing a bigger cup with ice to turn my hot tea I to iced tea for the 90 degree weather. We tried the cinnamon roll, maple butter biscuits, brown butter chocolate chip cookie and everything bagel sourdough and liked everything although we wished the biscuits were a little more maple flavored. Their bread is from out of this world!! So fresh, chewy, and flavorful. We drive an hour from Maryland for their bread. Everything they sell is good, from their bacon focaccia to their baguette and sourdough! Amazing staff too. They don't use preservatives, so we freeze half immediately when we get home. I bought a coffee and West Virginia must - the pepperoni roll.
