Went for the later seating tonight to celebrate anniversaries (23rd for us, 48th for my parents) and everything was fantastic. Had our own space (shed #1) and we really enjoyed the cozy ambiance and thoughtful sequence of platings. The crudite were roasted and/or pickled veggies, very tasty with sourdough slices. The sip of soup (don't call it "pea soup!") was potato, parsnip, and pistachio. Beef tartare with quail egg and truffled cauliflower was next; very delicate and balanced. A mushroom tart with light and flaky pastry dough followed. Marinated salmon with perfectly seared and crispy skin, then braised short ribs with gnocchi and beet puree, both perfectly balanced and proportioned, even though I was getting full already by this point! The "perfect bite of cheese" was truly just that; chevre with an apple-date butter. Dessert was Pink Squirrel inspired with a generous dollop of pink amaretto cream atop a round slice of chocolate cake. One of our diners has a gluten sensitivity, so they got served chocolate sorbet with cherries instead. Service and ambiance were great but I was not wowed by the food. My husband gets the steak pretty much everywhere we go - the steak here was $50, with no crust and insipid flavor. I got the lobster roll that was well reviewed on here, and it simply tasted like mayonnaise. Exceptions were, the spiced beet appetizer and a ginger cocktail were very flavorful and good. Didn't try dessert because we waited about 45 minutes for our main course and couldn't wait to get out. read more

My sister and I come here frequently for brunch. (It's probably the best in the Lehigh valley.) Today however was a little bit different than usual. We did not have a reservation and once again they managed to get us in as they always do. We ordered our usual drink (the seasonal Bellini) and ordered our food. It was a busy day with a bunch of large tables and the wait time pushed an hour. The staff at bolete were so kind about the wait and even provided us with an free appetizer (we got the yellowfin tuna tartare which was so fresh and delicious). Our food finally came which was delicious as usual. As things were wrapping up we were provided our checks and cashed out. At the last second we were again greeted by another free item, the staff provided us with an order of the butterscotch pudding on the house. I'm sure you can tell by the many reviews and beautiful pictures on this place that it is amazing. But here's were I stop talking about the food and start talking about the business. These people care out their customers. Point blank, period. They care about their food and the integrity of their ingredients. They support local Pennsylvania farmers and turn their resources into something beautiful. Bolete is truly the epitome of a beautifully run buisness. I understood Bolete to have a nationally recognized chef and to be one of the best restaurants in the Bethlehem PA area. What a disappointment, about the worst high-end experience I can remember. Maybe we're here on a bad night, but there's absolutely nothing that would bring me back. Where to start? The 2 plastic plants on the table coordinated well with the plastic utensils. Disposable bamboo plates accent the ball jars (instead of glasses). They automatically add 20% to the bill as a gratuity but we have to clear our own table. Oh yeah, a $5 per person charge to sanitize the shed after we leave and a $50 per person charge if you cancel within 24 hours. Food was OK, but clearly not worth $350 for 4 of us. For $75/person I expect at least metal utensils and china plates. Maybe even cloth napkins. OK, my wife had scallops and loved them. A friend ordered a chicken dish which came in a bamboo (disposable) cereal bowl on top of pasta with mushrooms and bacon. $36 for half a chicken breast and pasta seems rather steep to me. She said the chicken was quite good, but picked around the pasta and other ingredients while we ate. My son and I both had the "petite ribeye" for $38 each. By petite they meant about 5 or 6 slices on top of a mound of veggies. The steaks were cooked perfectly, but were clearly not prime. The sauce was mediocre and congealed into a jello like consistency about 1/2 way through my meal. Oh yes, no bread offered, no salad included with the meal. read more

Enjoyed a fabulous meal here with our daughter and son in law. Hubby loved it so much he wanted to dine again almost the very next night. A farm to table restaurant in a cool old house and cozy atmosphere. Love the farm country smocks the servers wear. The perfect place for celebrating birthdays or other special occasions. We arrived on time for our 7:30 reservation and were seated right away. The menu changes monthly depending on what is fresh and available. I started my meal, in May, with an asparagus soup with lobster fritters. It was really great! The soup was thick, rich and bursting the fresh asparagus flavor! The lobster fritters were a nice sweet punctuation to the asparagus story of both pureed and chunks of asparagus. For my main course of got the duck breast. It was cooked perfectly and the skin was nice and crisp. The dish was perfectly composed. I was very full. Another reason that I might have been so full were the two rolls that I ate while waiting for the soup. These rolls were so good they certainly deserve a shout out. Overhyped nonsense. Will never eat here again. Waited weeks for a reservation for a special occaision. Was seated at a table with a bench at one side. Two grown adults had to sit on a hard wood bench that was so high their legs couldn't touch the floor. I also couldn't cross my legs without tipping the table. Food was nonsense. Ordered a salad that was totally bland. Cashew butter? WTF? Was supposed to have blueberry vinaigrette but it was tasteless. For entree, I chose a chicken breast, which I would not normally order at a gourmet restaurant, but the menu listed hen of the woods mushroom, which I do like. When the dish arrived, mushrooms could not be detected. Must have been pureed i to the sauce. But surprise! There was a runny egg on the plate. I hate runny eggs and never order poached or sunny side eggs. The chicken was ok but boring. One of my friends ordered the burger and asked for it medium but it came well done - no pink at all. I would have sent that back but she didn't want to make a fuss. For desert, all but 1 item contained nuts and I am allergic. The only option left was "smores". Gross. We were not offered any coffee or other drinks after dinner although my son did order desert. By the time we could get the waitress attention to ask for coffee she was bringing the check so we skipped it. Waste of your time and money. Bolete is doing an impeccable job serving visitors to their restaurant, but they are also ensuring their staff is able to continue working through this challenging time. We are long time time regulars (only 3-5 times a year, depending on babysitter availability), but have long been huge supporters of Lee and Erin's establishments. We dined on the front porch and felt absolutely safe doing so. The Steak Tartare is back on the menu! The only problem is deciding between that and the oysters. If you've been on the fence about returning to dining out like we were, hopefully, should you go, you'll feel as safe and protected as we did when we visited recently. The quality was every bit as good as it has always been, and I LOVED the opportunity to dine outside. The only change I would hope for is that I wish we could have Doug as a server every time we visit. He's my favorite. Knowledgable, charismatic...we look forward to seeing him especially. Bolete actually contacted me to profusely apologize for the waiter's behavior, and invited us to come back with a gift certificate. It was a nice gesture. We had heard about the first- and last-hour 3-course tasting menu that they offer from M-Th, so we tried it. For $35, why not? We got to choose from 2 options from the first courses, 2 options from the second courses, and dessert. We didn't realize that each choice would be offered as a modification that lacked the more expensive ingredients (e.g., no ceviche in the soup, no lobster with the chicken dish, no snails with the fish). We would have preferred smaller versions of the real deal, but it was still pretty fantastic! We had cold carrot soup, mixed salad, salmon (they were out of the halibut), and chicken thighs. For dessert we chose butterscotch pudding ice cream and mint ice cream. Get. The. Mint. Ice. Cream. It was unreal! Cocktails were, again, very unique and tasty (albeit $15 a pop). I have to say, I don't know if we'd go back during the last hour of service again. Our server, the same one as when we went for brunch, was pleasant enough, but looked really tired. We kind of felt that everyone just wanted to go home, and was mostly busy cleaning up. For the level of business, service was pretty slow... we arrived at 8:45 and left well past 10. Bolete has found the most inventive ways to keep serving their wonderful food during the COVID19 pandemic. They offer curbside pickup as well as outdoor dining on their porch or on private custom built patios. They're using sustainable/disposable dishes so we don't have to worry about sharing germs. They've altered their service so they remain attentive & helpful, but they keep their distance which is important to germ conscious customers during these challenging times. They've somehow managed to restore some normalcy while also making dining out kind of an adventure. read more

February 25, 2021 Fantastic experience at Bolete! I was a little wary of of the 'shed village' they currently have installed to ward off the Rona, but my fiancé was loving it so in turn, i was loving it. The owner greeted us on our way in, & led us to our private shed experience. The ordering process was a little annoying, but i understand it has to be that way in order to best serve the guests & the kitchen. First, you set the reservation, then someone's going to call & instruct you to preorder a day or so before your reservation. Everything was absolutely fantastic! We ordered the Greens, Foie, Duck Breast, Burger with mushroom marmalade, & (2) buttermilk biscuits to start off. We ended it with the Boston Cream Eclair, which disappeared quickly. Overall, everything was great. I only wish we could have dined indoors, but soon enough. I typically don't review unless i've visited at least three times in the past year, but that just isn't possible this year. 2.5 stars Quick overview: Though some of the dishes I had were good and the cocktails far better than the dishes, the food lacked any "Bolete signature" that such a renowned and pricey restaurant should have and though I had exceptions to this: many of our dishes and pairings where lackluster for the price. Cocktails: Each drink we had was unique and delicious in its own way. The Christmas City sidecar was barely trumped by the Warden - a rye based drink with a pomegranate molasses (absolutely delicious) that you can strongly taste. If you're interested in the Seven Springs Sazerac - be ready to have a DD as this drink is strong and reminds you just what a lemon zest should do to a drink. Unfortunately the delicate flavors are trumped by a strong alcohol taste. The Blood Orange Negroni was another star. All other drinks were equally delicious and worth the money. First Course: the dinner rolls are very good. The chips and dip were tasty but nothing special. The dip is similar to a garlic aioli and you get about 15 -20 crushed chips. The beef tar tar is by far my favorite dish. Very good and pairs well with the chips it's served with and the table rolls. Finally, the mushroom soup was fantastic, and though a bit too theatrical for me, pouring the thick liquid over the bacon and other items in the soup was a cool touch. All of the first course dishes definitely were the stars of the show. For the main courses - The pork chop was good, and served with on a hash brown which was even tastier. Though delicious, I'd say a pork chop served at your good, local, sit down restaurant would be comparable. The scallops were over cooked and chewy and the cauliflower almost tasteless. The salmon was delicious but almost all of the watery beet broth was left in the bowl due to lack of taste. And the vegetarian sampler was served with the oddest sauerkraut tasting dish I've had. Our experience with our second courses left us unenthused with the dessert menu, which we skipped in place for the check. Service and Ambiance: Walking into Bolete, you are thrown back into the 1800's. Warm lighting, slanted doorways and floors, attire composed of whites and browns - the restaurant is beautifully put together. Our waiter was kind and professional, but often let many tasks fall to the hands of food runners and bussers. The slow pace of service and staggering of our dishes coming out was painful. Being an old building, the lights dim and brighten about every 3-5 minutes taking the focus away from your meal, conversation, and company. The noise level is on par with Boletes roots of an old tavern and you'll find yourself in need to project your voice and repeat yourself during your experience. read more

My wife treated me to a birthday dinner at Bolete and it was probably the best end-to-end meal we have had this year. Have been there a few times and it's always very good, but everything we ordered this night was absolutely perfect. She had the Shwarma spiced badger beets which were outstanding. I'm not a huge beet fan, but they were sliced razor thin and so delicious with a subtle bite. I had the Heirloom tomato salad with warm mozzarella with crostini...the pesto sauce was just right. I had the soft shell crab, which was the best I have ever had and I also had a taste of her Rhode Island fluke, also perfect. Finished off with a butterscotch mouse (and candle:)!. Service very attentive and I do find the liquor here to be priced very reasonably considering that it is one of the best experiences in the Lehigh Valley. Well, like everyone else, there's only one real thing to say. This place is incredible! From the ambience of a romantic farm house with candle lit tables, to the professional and friendly staff, there's not much to complain about here. There's a reason it gets so much hype. As for the food, we started with the ceviche. It was absolutely phenomenal. So fresh tasting and the perfect start to the meal. They know how to make a good first impression. Only possible negative is it was very small and not really fit for two, but you need to expect that at a place like this. For the main course, I got halibut, which in the theme of this restaurant was excellent. The seer couldn't have been much more perfected and like the ceviche, was ultra fresh and refreshing. This was an okay sized portion. My wife, however, got the winner of the night. The duck breast was quite possibly the best tasting meal I've ever had. It's on top of a layer of duck liver pancakes, which believe it or not, was incredible and the star of the dish. The portions were hearty with this one, the breast was cooked to perfection and the flavors were powerful and awesome. Definitely recommend this one if they have it, as their menu changes every day. We finished with an ice cream sundae, which was also really good. The home made strawberry ice cream was perfectly crafted and contrasted the warm brownie very nicely. They added a candle for our anniversary which was a nice touch. The total bill was around $175 for everything (including drinks), which sounds expensive, but you need to remember...this is a top class restaurant and totally worth it. This is a beautiful place to look at, inside and out, plus the food is delicious and the service is warm as well as super attentive...full house on a Friday night and we felt like our food and our party of 2 was the most important thing on the staff and chef's mind. It truly makes a difference and an experience unforgettable. Food: specified Gluten Free/Dairy Free allergies and the staff was very accommodating Fluke ceviche: This dish could be served in the biggest restaurant in Peru and stand out as the best ceviche around. Flavor/textures/freshness worked together brilliantly. Loved this dish. Ribeye: Cooked perfectly and very flavorful meat. We cleaned our plates without a problem and the portion was quite large...chef made it Dairy Free by leaving out the tzatziki and it still worked beautifully. We're also not huge mushroom fans but this marinated mushroom was like nothing we've ever had before, amazing! Wine: Had some of the Monastrell because let's face it, the Spaniards know what's up...very good wine but looking forward to coming back and working their mixologist, drink menu was a healthy size. It seems almost silly to add another 5-star review for this incredible place, but I consider myself a "foodie" and come from a city with phenomenal restaurants (Seattle) and this place ranks right up there as one of my all-time favorites! Yes, worth every penny of the "$$$"! My Dad, Mom & I were there to celebrate my Mom's 85th birthday and Mother's Day. The servers were so patient with repeating menu options, and describing them clearly so that both Mom and Dad could hear and understand (the restaurant was a bit noisy at dinner time). As many have said, they were very attentive but never intrusive. M&D split a lobster roll and I had the asparagus salad as appetizers. Delish! They couldn't stop raving about how good the lobster was! For dinner we had the scallops, a fish dish (can't remember which one) and the pork chops. Each one was prepared perfectly, with deep and rich flavors & textures. Desserts - my god, the desserts! A++ on that damn butterscotch pudding! Mom had the rhubarb almond tart - with a candle, ofc. And you'd think Dad had never tasted mint ice cream before, he was so overjoyed by the "real mint" in it! They even delivered a special-ordered port to our table along with dessert, that was a last-minute call-in request from family back in Seattle!
