We were roaming around Distillery District and decided to grab an early dinner before we head back home. I always had a good experience at BOKU and recently visit did not disappoint! We were greeted at the door right away :) Our server was friendly and courteous; he looked European, which always throws me off at a Japanese restaurant lol. The ambiance was cozy and the paper umbrellas hung on the ceiling was a beautiful touch! We shared a few items, and the food portions were quite good: Curry Udon with Shrimp (you can get Chicken or Tofu as well) - I really enjoyed the curry, not too spicy but very flavouful. The shrimp was actually crispy battered shrimps, and they were good! Champon Noodles - I always thought this dish was actually Korean, but I guess not lol. It is a seafood mix with noodles in a buttery, creamy broth. Initially, it did not look to appetizing but it was quite tasty. Honestly, my experience here was BAD. We came on a Saturday afternoon during the Christmas market season, so it was pretty busy. We put our name on an iPad, and the wait was about 45 minutes. When we were seated we had to share a table (we were a group of 5). The servers kept mixing us up, literally 10 seconds after we paid she forgot. They also charged us an automatic 20% service fee without letting us know first, no word of it at all, I found that to be dishonest. My friend and I got the tonkotsu ramen. It was so strange, the noodles were not ramen noodles at all, but Chinese flour noodles. The broth was not rich and tasted like plain bland pork broth. Came in on a Monday around 12:30pm to look for a table of 2. It was empty, but it's because Mondays are usually dead around this area and they just opened at noon, so we were able to get seated immediately. It started to get busy around 1. Service is great! I originally wanted the shrimp japanese curry, but they were already completely out of shrimp even though we were the first customers. That's why I rated them a 4. The sauce and egg make it so freaking delicious! The japanese curry was so good and not spicy. I wonder if they could have made it a little spicy but either way it was a 10/10 dish!! I really, really like Boku. They have a great menu, food is delicious, and they are always busy, and, despite being inside the Distillery District, which would seem to result in them being busy just because of the tourist traffic, the experience is always great. Boku is currently offering Japanese BBQ, a noodle soup and a beef bao as their small plates that can be eaten in their festive outside area, or taken away as you wander the holiday village. Though I was tempted by the BBQ which looked and smelled amazing, I decided on the beef bao, which was juicy and salty and complimented with some pickled veggies. The bun was pillowy soft and mild, and contained the fillings for the brief moments it took me to eat it. DELISH!! I highly recommend grabbing your Winter Village snacks at Boku! read more

Our server was great - she followed up, answered questions and checked back with the chef when she wasn't sure. Boku was not originally on my list of places to visit in Toronto, but the Winter Village was. I really wanted to eat from one of the many vendors, but this American couldn't handle the minor (but windy) snowstorm that fell upon the city last Monday. I had to find a comfortable, safe indoor dining area for a quick snack, and Boku was just the place. I was surprised to see their outdoor firepit area quite busy - the snow never bothered Canadians anyway! Around 3pm, there was not much of a wait. We sat down and knew exactly what we wanted: warm apple ciders and poutine. The poutine of course was Japanese style, with pulled duck, green onions, cheese curds, etc. It tasted exactly like how it sounds: delicious. This was the only poutine I had during my short stay in Toronto, and I'm not mad about it at all. Obviously this version had an Asian twist to it so don't expect whatever may be deemed as "authentic" poutine. I was very satisfied with this gourmet snack and it paired so well with our apple ciders. I guess I felt so comfortable (or fell into a walking food coma?) afterwards that I carelessly left the restaurant without my purse - I left it hanging on my chair. And I didn't even realize until over an hour later. I immediately called them, and before I could even finish my sentence they were like YES WE HAVE IT. Came here for a late lunch. As soon as I saw the Unagi Don on the menu, I immediately started craving some eel. The dish itself was decent. One thing it had going for it was that the cut of eel was pretty sizable and the proportion to the rice felt good. It was tender and the rice was also decent. It comes with a lot of avocado, which I felt didn't add much to the dish and it felt a little out of place. Also, while I liked the sauce, I felt there was too much of it. The amount more than coated the eel and soaked the rice under it a bit too much. With the avocado already present, the dish overall felt too rich. I also had a bite of the ramen, which also felt a little off. The soup was okay, but I think the noodles weren't correct. Something about it felt a little too thin and also a little harder than they should be. The place has an interesting feel to it. Kind of an old sports bar vibe, dimly lit and a lot of dark wood. It is fusion, so maybe that explains some of the choices for the dishes, but I'm not really sure. The servers were nice and responsive. Boku was not on my lists of food spots to try visiting Toronto, but the location was convenient. It is just okay for food, but ambiance was nice and has a comfy vibe. The food descriptions that my boyfriend and I got can be found below. - Japanese Curry [GET]: I got the deep-fried chicken and Japanese curry with white rice. The chicken was solid, nicely fried, and not greasy at all, but could be juicier though. The curry sauce was throwing me off a bit. It didn't taste much like Japanese curry, definitely missing a kick or some punch of flavors. Also, I was surprised that it didn't come with any vegetables or potatoes in the curry. The rice was average too, and they only served it in one small scoop. It was so little that I had more curry than rice left, so sad and disappointing. - Katsu Curry Udon [GET]: My boyfriend was also craving for curry, and I like that it got a slight spicy kick to it. The chicken was just like mine, fried wonderfully, but could be juicier and more tender. The udon noodles were beautifully cooked, not too soggy and had a nice bounce to it. You can slurp up the noodles one string at a time. The portion here was definitely better than my rice bowl, but it was also more expensive. The only bad thing about it was that the curry was also kind of sweet, which the spicy and sweet is throwing me off a bit. Ambiance: 3.75/5 - Boku was on the small side, basically a long and narrow space with a bar seating area. The interior is dimly lit and clean with large windows, so you can see the Christmas decorations and people walking by. As the night progresses, the restaurant can feel a bit cramped, since we are sitting near the bar, and we often find servers getting stuck between us and the people at the bar. I often bump my chairs to the people next to me too. Price: 3.25/5 - I got the Japanese curry with chicken for $20, and my boyfriend got the katsu curr udon for $24 all before tax. The portions are smaller than expected, and I was not entirely full or satisfied leaving the restaurant. I'd say it's not worth it for the price point. They do have an extensive menu, but prices are on the higher end since they are in an expensive area. Service: 4/5 - Our server was pretty good. She greeted us as soon as we sat down and took our orders. The food came out relatively fast. After we got our food, she checked back in with us to make sure everything was okay and asked if we need anything. We felt like we were well-taken care of, and she was on top of her game throughout the night. We were only able to split the bills into two with the other couples during the weekends. BLUF: Boku is probably one of the few restaurants that offers indoor dining at the Distillery. They offer a large variety of food items, focusing mainly on Japanese fusion food, but to me it's more confusing than fusion. Food is not the most outstanding, but gets the job done. It is also quite pricey, so I would recommend getting food elsewhere, unless you want somewhere close and near the Christmas Market. I would recommend just getting some small bites or the curry udon. I'd say low expectations, and I will not return again. Lastly, parking can be annoying downtown, so just take the TTC. read more

My husband and I went to this Modern Japanese eatery with a few friends during the Winter Market at the Distillery District. First there are no reservations and it is old school write your name on the list and wait for the waitress to call you and your party to the table. Our wait was like 10 minutes during what is arguably an extremely busy time of year for this team. My husband had the japanese curry and chicken cutlet. He has been searching for something close to Coco's curry in Okinawa and was very impressed with how close this dish was to his favorite. I had the Salmon Tartare with Taro chips. This was plenty event though it is supposed to be an appetizer. I highly recommend it! Our friends had the BBQ Unagi and Pork Ramen with Egg. Both of them thought their dishes were nice as well. Again, I highly recommend these dishes to anyone. We were seated inside and shared a table with another party. the outside area did not appear to open for seating, but we could have just misunderstood how the business worked. the Saki bar was across the street, there seemed to be a BBQ area on the patio, and the inside was where you could order from their menu. The layout was confusing but the food was outstanding. The prices are decent for Toronto, so if you are a tourist, this is not a gouge. I had the opportunity to meet with a few friends at Boku over the Easter weekend and had a great time. The staff were just awesome and attentive so cudos to them. The decor is modern with a few Japanese twists that are meaningful without being ostentatious. The bar is not well adorned but has the character that a lot of the Distillery District building tend to have, brick, wrought iron, and duct work and wire work that is visible. The kitchen is open which lets you feel like you're part of the action. We had nearly ever app on the menu, a favorite of mine was the Crudo and the Salad with a wasabi dressing. The fried chicken and Nori tacos were also great. My wife had some of the Sochi offering which were very fresh. I had the Black Garlic Ramen which was good, however I thought the broth lacked umami and the bowl could have been adorned a little better, the piece of Nori was sort of a weird touch. Given that the group was diverse and had different dietary and budget restraints we were happy to find a place that can accommodate all of these things. We were seated rather quickly in this restaurant underneath artful decorations of beautiful paper umbrellas. It did take a little bit of time for our server to get around to taking our orders. As usual in covid times, the menus were not printed, but rather QR codes to be scanned with our phones. The menu here is rather interesting. There is one page of all of the food, and then two pages of drinks. Of those in the party that don't drink, they were still satisfied with the food choices. There were a number of things on the menu that I was interested in, but I decided to go with the spicy ramen because you really can't go wrong with that, especially on a cold, rainy day. Strangely enough, I found out that the spicy ramen did not come with a spicy oil. Instead, I had to pay extra for the spicy oil. I also sprang for the nitamago egg, as well as splitting the bottle of sake with two others. We got the sake warmed, and that was an excellent decision. The sake was faintly sweet and fragrant, and it was very smooth going down. I was not super impressed by my ramen. The portion was smaller than most other ramen restaurants, while it's price is a little bit higher than usual. I consider this to be because of Distillery District pricing. Additionally, the egg that came in my ramen was not completely warmed through. I really hate giving bad reviews but the food here was REALLY not good and way over priced. But I understand the rent at the Distillery District must be super expensive but that basically just added to further disappointment with their food. I ordered their $20 Sizzlin' Beef Soba under their Boku Signatures and it came in a small sizzling cast iron plate with ground beef, green onion, shredded egg + shredded nori over, and noodles infused with green tea. The dish also came with a dashi soy dipping sauce. The noodles were absolute mush... the dashi soy dipping sauce then made it mushier when I dipped it in. The entire dish lacked any sort of contrast in textures because the ground beef was mushy as well as the shredded egg. I wish I could find some sort of redeeming factor about this dish but I just cannot. I was only able to survive lunch by picking the fries and having a bite from my boyfriend's $13 K-Fried chicken sandwich - which was tasty but like anything fried chicken is going to be tasty... hard to mess that one up. The staff was nice but they were really busy so they weren't as attentive. Took a while to get both our bowls of ramen. As well, one of the bowls were not clean so we had to ask for another one. Taste wise, the ramen was good. Spicy ramen was pretty standard but if I had to recommend any ramen, definitely try the Black Garlic. We both really enjoyed the vegan wild mushrooms ramen ($16.50) with kombu dashi, king oyster, enoki shimeji mushroom, wakame, confit cherry tomato, chives, nori, garlic oil. I opted a slight modification with no chives and garlic oil. It felt a lot lighter than traditional ramen, yet equally flavourful! It was a little busy given it was the holiday season but my friend and I were able to be seated right away. They check for proof of vaccination at the door as well as do contact tracing.
