I've been wanting to try this place for a reaaaally long time since it's always busy. It goes like this. You choose your soup, chili level, and side (rice or noodles). You're supposed put whatever you want to eat on your side to cool down. Then dip it in your own sauce creation. It's called boiling point for a reason or else you'll burn your tongue off. The soups are literally boiling in front of you. Yes, it's good. Is it amazing and the best hot pot I've ever had? No. Would I come here again? Hell yes. Is it worth the price? Yes, but only the soups that are under $14. You might even be able to share 1 hot pot if you're on a diet. Just ask for extra meat as they don't give you enough. Seafood seems to be the most popular here. For spiciness levels, I would go with medium spicy next time. Hot is good to clear your sinuses. Medium is good for a kick but still enjoyable. I couldn't imagine flaming hot (no thanks). To cut it short, it's a cool spot to frequently visit, especially when you're craving soup and noodles. Food is good but prepare to wait at least an hour if you're not one of the first to arrive. I'm not sure If they take reservations but they have an electronic waitlist in the restaurant. I love the choices of hotpot to choose from and it is great especially on cold days. I only wish they would mix it up a bit once in a while and have something new. In another similar place they have a lobster tail seafood pot. I wish they would have that too. They had the rib soup pot once and got rid of it. First time visit to this BP location in Gardena. Located in a strip mall filled with other Asian eateries - Furaibo, Honeymee, etc. Went for lunch and although we got there at 11:30am, all the tables were filled and we had to wait for around 15 mins until a table opened up. Didn't appreciate the rude-ish waiter who barked at us (twice btw) to go and wait outside - mind you, it was chilly out and their outdoor space heater wasn't on. Somewhat rude service aside, the taste of their Taiwanese hot pot soups were spot on (i.e. delicious), and since it was their "lunch special" time, each of our hot pots came with an iced green or black tea drink. Chose the iced green tea, and oh my stars it is refreshing! Why haven't I ordered this before?! Also, they also gave each table a complimentary side dish of seaweed. It was marinated in something that I couldn't put my finger on. The app on the house was appreciated but I wasn't a fan of the taste. At the end of the meal I was anticipating the shot of basil seed lemonade, but at this location we were served a shot of a thicker, syrupy sweet beverage. Didn't know what was in it, but it tasted like thickened molasses water...or the dark Caro syrup. Sorry, not a fan. Service was good - they stopped by a good amt of times to check if we needed anything. Tips: if you're running low on broth, they will refill it for you as much as you like. Also, if your boiling soup becomes too much for you, flag an employee down and they will put the flame out for you. While we were eating, the masses came and there were groups of people waiting outside for a table. So if you don't like waits, come early since they do not take reservations. Taiwanese Hot Pot in Gardena. Good stuff, just a really long wait. There's not a lot of tables and seating so expect a wait. I wouldn't even bring more than 4 people to this place as waiting for a bigger table will be a hassle. I was told Boiling Point had amazing service . So we waited about 1 hr 15 minutes to be seated . Another guest came in 1 hr later and they got sat before we did. We had 3 people ahead of us and we all said something . The cashier did not apologize for the inconvenience, but apologize to that other group for putting them on the spot and stated it was his fault for seeing them. Boiling point definitely isn't for the weak at heart. Stinky tofu smelliness in a deliciously scalding personal sized hot pot. If you get the boiling point house special hot pot, you're going to be eating stinky tofu (non-fried, soup variety, which is a lot less stinkier), pork blood, pork intestines. If you aren't into body parts that people don't typically eat (which by the way, you actually do in your hot dogs and beef patties), then you may want to rethink coming here, though they do have plenty of other flavors. But you will be sitting there smelling the tofu for the duration of your meal. The soup is quite delicious (in a MSG way) and you can fix the spiciness level. Boiling Point hot soups are great on a cold day or if you're just looking for something to warm you up! The restaurant is located in Tozai Plaza off of Western Ave. and Redondo Beach Blvd. They have a variety of hot pot soups including beef, lamb, seafood, curry fishball, and veggie. They also have milk and tea drinks, snow flake ice, and macaron ice cream sandwiches! Service can be a bit slow at times. The actual wait time for the food was not long, but no one really came to check on us after that. It took a while for our waiter to finally walk by so that we could ask for more water. Each soup is served on top of its own burner, so your soup will stay piping hot throughout your meal...but be careful not to burn yourself! You can choose your spiciness level: Not Spicy, Tiny Spicy (which isn't listed on their actual menu), Mild, Medium, Very Spicy, or Flaming. Comes with rice or noodles...(The noodles are vermicelli, which most hot soups come with already...so just something to keep in mind if you were expecting ramen noodles instead!) Also, it is not uncommon for this location to run out of one of the menu items. I originally ordered the Tomato Veggie Soup (which can include meat), but apparently they ran out of that one and only had it without meat. Why they can't just throw in some meat was a little bewildering to me, but I'm assuming they all come pre-made of some sorts? They also do not do substitutions of any kind. I can't pinpoint what the aroma is when you walk in, but it hits you like a bag full of nickels in the face. It's like old sponge water that's boiled. But, you deal with it and breathe through your nose. Why? The soup packs flavor. The broth isn't heavy, yet it has an intensely rich flavor (note: the mild just tastes like chicken broth so get medium or higher). Whatever you choose, it's packed like the 405 at rush hour - full of vegetables, glass noodles, tofu, fish balls (not those kind of balls), and protein. I got the #4, which is beef. If you're not adventurous, this is probably the one to get. They bring it out in this contraption that has a small burner underneath. Once it's in front of you, they light the burner and the already cooked food begins to boil. They'll turn it off if it's too hot - I asked them to, because well, that thing is like drinking boiling water. On the side are dipping sauces, of which we had the garlic soy sauce and mixed in garlic bean paste. You're not going to make any friends or have memorable kisses after this so be warned. But when you dip the food in it - ay chihuahua! If you get here early enough, you avoid the lines. It's the only place with a giant wait outside in this little hard to park at shopping complex. If it's your first time here (like it was mine) I highly recommend getting this because it has a little bit of everything. My favorite includes the thinly sliced beef and the stinky tofu. The best part of the meal is having your drink included. You get a choice of green or black iced tea (I opted for green.. it is sweetened) and it compliments so well with the salty boiling hot broth. My only knock on this restaurant is the wait. If you plan on coming here during peak hours, good luck to you and be prepared to wait a long, long time. If you are willing to wait, the food will not disappoint. I just wished they would expand this location and add more tables! Even though I tend to order medium spicy, it usually isn't too spicy and just adds a little flavor to the soup. The value for the lunch special is definitely worth it. For $11, you get your choice of hot pot, a drink and rice/noodles. There are some hot pots that are a little bigger for a couple dollars extra but I believe this is great value. TIPS 1) Do not go during peak hours if you are starving. They open right at 11 AM and it is usually filled within 5 minutes of opening. 2) Don't forget to get a stamp card. For every 10 hot pots, you get 1 hot pot free. They also have a drink stamp card (Buy 5, get 1 free). 3) Don't forget the sauces. They had the AC blasting but that makes sense for the food they serve. They had a promotion for 2 new limited time hot pots, one of which was the HERBAL PORK RIB but they had ran out or sold out some time ago. How disappointing! So instead, husband got the usual HOUSE COMBO HOTPOT with no spice and rice. It came with pork intestines, pork, Napa cabbage, tofu, a clam, a quail egg, miniature mushrooms, etc. I got my usual LAMB HOTPOT with no spice since I can't really eat spicy food with rice. It came with lamb slices, imitation crab, small mushrooms, tofu, preserved pickled veggies, vermicelli, tofu skin, Napa cabbage, a clam, etc. The soup was flavorful and I loved sipping it with my rice. You can create your own dipping sauce with the 4 sauces they provide you (garlic, bean curd, garlic soy, and chili oil) which goes great with the meats and veggies in the hot pot. We all just had hot water and I had to ask for refills. The servers never came by to ask how things were but were pretty responsive when we asked for things. If you have an interest in hot pot, milk tea drinks, macaroon ice cream sandwiches or long lines this is a spot for you! Boiling point is a little bit different from Japanese style shabu shabu or other Taiwanese or Korean hot pot places I have tried. Once you order off the menu you receive your own bowl of boiling soup with all the contents preloaded. (Other variations of hot pot include shared or individual pots of broth that you add your own raw ingredients into and then eat as it cooks). This preloaded version is much more time saving for the restaurant, although it doesn't allow you to pick and choose each ingredient that gets cooked in your broth. The light the fire under the hot pot as they bring it to the table and you usually have to wait about five/ten minutes or so till the contents are cooked. You get vermicelli or rice to accompany your meal. I got the beef hot pot and thought the broth and all the contents were very tasty. My first impression of this method is that it is much more efficient although I do like picking all al carte different meats, seafood, and vegetables that go in my hot pot. I ended up trying the Rose milk tea too which is a little too Rosy for my flavor. The original was very good however. We went at off-peak hours at about 2:30 PM but still had to wait about 15 or 20 minutes for a table. I have been to this location on multiple occasions. Time and time again, the hot pots are legit. The main issue with this place, which are probably contributing to the relatively low reviews, is the wait time. This location can do better if they seated customers not purely on a 'first-come first-sit' basis, rather seat customers based on an available tables-to-party size approach. I have seen several times where they seated a party of 1 at the booth or a party of 2 at a four person table, all this in situations where the next party had the more appropriate party size. I am not saying this approach is the best way, but all I can say is their current approach needs improvement. Hopefully they figure it out. In any event, expect to wait at least 45 minutes at almost anytime of the day. I have to say, however, the wait is worth it. I have yet to experience an individual hot-pot restaurant that is good as BP. I typically order the Beef flavor, but have tried Seafood and Miso. All of those tasted great. The broth is usually spot on, with just the right amount of heat and a hint of sweetness to it. The mix of meats, vegetables, and other ingredients (i.e., fried tempura, tofu skin, corn, and egg -depends on what you get) really make the hot pots here a wonderful experience. The sauces, ranging from sweet garlic, chili oil, and some type of spicy miso are wonderful dippers for an already tasty hot pot. Sometimes I don't use the sauces, because, honestly, there is no need to. In any event, in addition to the wait, expect to struggle a little with the parking. There are other decent restaurants in the same plaza, so get ready for parking wars. If you come at lunch, the pots are a little cheaper plus you get a free green or black tea. They have tasted the broth after my complaint and they are currently working to fix it. I am all for them training their staffs, but I think before the food is placed on the customer's table, it should have been double checked. Not professional. They did offer to take the appetizer and drinks off the bill. BTW they messed up on the order for Garlic Pork - no garlic sauce just boiled pork came out. I finally have been here after bookmarking for a while and I was glad that I came by. Be aware: there is always a long line so expect to wait. And no reservations allowed here. Here is the breakdown: Food- one star The food is great. If you haven't gone before, go with the #1 and then explore the menu to venture into other options. They will bring a pot with many things on it a mixed of meat and vegetables. You pick the level of spiciness of what you want to eat and then pick between a type of transparent noodle and rice. Perfect for Instagram too. Decor/ ambiance- one star Very casual place but they keep it clean. Service- half star The waiter that seat us down and took our order was a bit moody and not courteous with us. We get kind of uncomfortable asking questions about the menu to him. But other than that, the remaining of the staff was nice and friendly. Wow factor- one star Definitely unique amongst other hot pot places I have been. I absolutely love Boiling Point food and will be a loyal customer as long as there's one nearby, but this last visit was unfortunate. The male servers here are pretty terrible. Three of them had no enthusiasm or dignity in doing their job. I'm not really sure who, if anyone was assigned to our table. We pretty much never got checked on throughout our meal. We'd always have to wave them down to get them to help with anything. They kept switching off who'd help us. The soups for my family were spicier than anticipated and we quickly realized we were never served water. It was nearly a choking hazard before anyone came by to bring water. We sat right across from the register too. Only thing they did that was particularly helpful was switch out our vermicelli orders to rice when we changed our mind. My friend Tin H and I went to Boiling Point for dinner. We both got the house special hot soup ($12) with a side of vermicelli ($1) and a side of white rice ($1). The rice and vermicelli was average in proportion and taste. The hotpot was pretty good in terms of variety of ingredients (napa, fermented tofu, sliced pork, enoki mushroom, kamaboko, meatball, clam, quail egg, pork blood rice, pork intestine, nira, preseve vegetables, tomato, cilantro) and everything itself tasted fine, but the pot was difficult to eat from because it was shallow and to add any additional ingredient (side vegetables, vermecilli) would overflow it. Ingredients itself tasted fine, and there were constant refills of soup for us. Soup itself was a bit bland, but ingredients were rich in flavor. For dessert, I got the cappuccino macaroon ice cream ($2.60) and 5 piece ice cubes ($3.25/5 or $0.65/1). They ended us with the basil drink (free) after our meal. I wouldn't recommend the cappuccino macaroon ice cream due to the poor texture of the macaroon (brittle, hollow) and ice cream (icey) itself. Taste-wise, it was subtle and lacking sweetness. The ice cubes were decent, but on the icey side. My favorite was probably the sesame, strawberry, and Hokkaido with brown sugar. I love hot pot, and Taiwanese hot pot at that. Boiling Point is a great place to satisfy that hot pot craving as you get your little personal hot pot. Unfortunately, it isn't the same as before. Prices have increased but there are more options to choose from! I feel like the contents of the hot pot are different from last time I went, though it might just be my imagination. I would like to give a better rating for Boiling Point but the wait is always unnecessarily long (unless you eat at absurd times) and the quality of the food doesn't taste as good as before. I've been here way too many times. But I keep coming back to this amazing individual hot pot place. THE SOUPS: My favorites are the Korean Bean Paste, Original, and Beef. I usually get medium (you can add more chili oil later). If it's your first time here, I highly suggest the Original. It has the perfect balance of ingredients: a fish cake stamped with the Boiling Point logo, beef, quail egg, wasabi rice ball, and various veggies. The beef has thin slices of rib eye as the central ingredient but still has various veggies that complement it. The Korean Bean Paste has pork belly, noodles, rice cake, and bean sprouts as opposed to cabbage. THE SAUCES: my favorite is the bean curd paste, but garlic soy and chili bean paste come as a close second. I normally don't add chili oil unless I'm feeling adventurous. But all the sauces are extremely solid and add some zing to your dish. THE FREE LUNCH DRINK: A cherry on the top of a fair priced meal, you get a free small sweet black or green tea. Thanks Boiling Point for quenching our thirst while we eat this amazing hot pot. LEMONADE WITH BASIL SEEDS: Comes with your check but such a great palette cleanser after eating a bold meal. They say it is for 2 people, but the two of us had so much left over that we also ate it for lunch the next day. You get your choice of broth, which comes as a frozen block that you boil in your own pot at home with 5 cups of water. You choose your meat (we got pork, which is thinly sliced). The kit includes an assortment of extras that you boil in, like cabbage, tofu cubes, tofu skin, mushrooms, fish cake, Spam slices, fake crab, oval/flat mochi, and just one pack of noodles (I hope I didn't leave anything out). I had a great experience here, all the workers were great and really professional! Oh and of course the food was amazing on this rainy day. It hit my stummy (stomach and tummy lol) perfectly! Only thing that ruined my experience was the other guests complaining to the waiters about me cutting in line. I showed up at 10:30 to make sure I get me and my PREGNANT fiancé on the list because we all know that line is ridiculous. If you're the guests that complained about us we didn't cut the line, here's a tip for you show up early and be smart wait in the car until they text you that your table is ready. Just ordered for take out and very happy with the food and how clean they packed the food. No wait at all. I called and food was ready less than 10'. To be honest, my boyfriend and I probably come here at least twice a month lol... It's kinda funny actually. Sometimes we try NOT to come here, so we can force ourselves to get out of our comfort zone, but somehow we always find ourselves coming back. We don't come here for the service, we come here for the food - and we specifically try to come only during lunch hours! The difference between lunch and dinner is the price point is cheaper, iced tea is included, and the wait isn't as bad! Their service I can say is not the best. It's a hit or miss really, but that doesn't keep us from coming back. They have great food! I always order to the veggie or beef pot and my boyfriend gets the milk cream curry. Take note that their food can be too spicy for some people, so I would recommend starting with mild or medium and from there decide if you want more spice. I personally love getting the flaming spice level, but I definitely would not recommend this for just anyone! You can also ask for more broth to water down the spice level or if you just want more broth. Also, you can ask to turn off the fire or add more fire if needed. Each pot comes with a side of rice or noodle and the sauces accommodate the hot pots so perfectly! Tried to order take out online/app last Saturday. Stores opens at 11am and I can order everything else (drinks, appetizers, sauce, etc) except the hot pot. I tried calling till 1130am no one pick up after long ringing then it just went straight to voicemail. Don't know what's exactly was going on. My husband was looking forward to get some hot soup for this cold weather. Truly disappointed. No to mention they always forget to give me either the vermicelli or rice that come with the meal. I will give them 3 stars cuz the food is still great. Just take out order is a problem. They don't care about their customers. They don't follow the waitlist order. We waited 1.5 hrs and ended up being skipped. We could have fit in a booth but they didn't even care to offer. We told them we can add a chair and unreasnably declined. They even served us bowls with raw meat hanging off of it. And replaced it with another set of dirty bowls. Very great. I thought this place was pretty good! A friend of a friend brought us here on a Saturday night. The wait was around 20 min. I ordered #10 medium, which is Thai hot pot. I was surprised how loaded it was with seafood, pork and veggies! I added ramen noodles and an egg but I'd skip on the egg next time. It had the perfect spice but I could probably go a step up next time. Boyfriend ordered the same but mild. Friends ordered the beef and taiwanese. I tried the taiwanese and it was spicy, but with great flavor!!! I would get that next time. The only reason i docked one star was because the servers moved us to a different table after we were settled and had already ordered... we were all a little upset about that. I like this place though because they have a wide range of soup options so theres something for everyone! Just wouldn't say the service is the greatest. You should be able to find a parking spot since the lot is fairly large but it is shared with many other restaurants. I'd say if its cold, and you want soup, go here! read more
