So many cities have their authentic German beer garden and this was the only one I could find in Boulder. Ambience it a 8-9 very cool place. Service is great a 9-10. The beer selection is 7-8 ... but great to get Czehvar on tap. Now for the bad...the food who in the hell deep fries pierogi? The worst I ever had and am sure they came frozen in a box. The polish keibasa was just fair. Saurktraut from a can or worse. The food is just not good. As I write this I am looking in the kitchen; female chef in tank top no hair net... Love it here! Beer was great and the food was too! My husband thought his pretzel was too hard, I though it was way too hot. However the dumpling and main dish (a vinegar beef) was worth it. This place is great! Came here with a friend while he was visiting me, and when we walked up to the place, we immediately both were like, "oh hell yes." We both really love German style pubs, and this place goes all out with the atmosphere. The building looks like an old tavern you'd find somewhere in Bavaria or in some German countryside that's been there for years but has been renovated and then relocated to Boulder, CO somehow. The seating was seat yourself. They have a great selection of European import beers as well as local beers on tap. They also had a nice late night menu going, which was good because we didn't get there until around 9:30. I ordered the veggie burger and my buddy got a frankfurter and a pretzel. All of them were great! They also have different types of mustard on the table, one of them they make in-house, all of them were delicious! They also had a comedy show going on in the back for $5, which was cool to see them hosting that. Definitely coming back here soon and highly recommend. read more

This restaurant is the best designed restaurant hands down in Boulder. You feel as if you have walked into a biergarten in Europe. I would recommend a visit just for the ambiance. The selection of beers is limited compared to other brewpubs in Boulder but the fun begins with the glasses used to serve the European beers which all come in their individually labeled glasses. Unfortunately the compliments stop here. The server we had was hurried and not terribly attentive - the place was busy but as it had been busy for the first week of being open they should have scheduled the service staff better. The food was meh at best. The sausages were quite good - we had both the pork and beef and the veal and pork but they were served with two small slices of stale bread and limp french fries. The sauerkraut and mustard which went with the sausages were quite good but did not make up for the lack of the other items on the dish. We also tried the perogies which were fine but small and nothing special and both types of wienerschnitzel which were again fine but nothing special. We also had the pretzel which was stale, must have been from the previous day. I would highly recommend visiting this place for its atmosphere and to grab a quick drink or two but not for the food. read more

I've been craving a place like this, and a friend had just waxed rhapsodic about it, so my expectations were a little high. I'd like to mention that I'm writing all this in hopes that they'll work out the kinks because I'd like this to be a regular spot for me. We went around 6pm on a Thursday night; it was PACKED. We managed to find an open spot at the community tables in the front room--it then took about 15 minutes for anyone to even greet us or take our order (we actually had to flag the waitress down.) The servers didn't appear to have a very reliable method for checking on new parties, since the seating is community, it's not obvious when there's a new party (especially since there is not hostess.) They really need to work on this--it's not a great way to start out the night. When we finally were waited on, the beers and food we ordered. The draft selections were yummy, a nice change from traditional Colorado microbrews (which I love, but it's nice to change it up). Our waitress was nice, and seemed somewhat apologetic about the service issues. The pretzel we ordered was kind of cold, like it had been refrigerated, but the mustard was delicious. I was a little disappointed because the menu says the pretzel will be served "with house made mustards," as in plural, but we only received one, and had to ask for more. But once we got to sample them all--they were all delicious. The charcuterie plate was good--very European, so make sure you're okay with headcheese! Not enough bread is served with it, and we had to pay to get more (we had a lot of paté leftover that'd we'd otherwise had to have eaten with a spoon.) The atmosphere is really great, and the music was loud but I like loud. I'll go back, and hope they've worked out the service issues in the meantime. read more

Loved this place in the beginning but the service is terrible, the bouncers are rude, and it is extremely overpriced. I was not allowed in for having a vertical ID, which does not expire for 5 more years. I had previously been here numerous times. When I went here for a graduation lunch with 12 people, food came out randomly, and we had to send back numerous dishes. And the waitresses were acting like we were being inconvenient. As a Polish person living in Boulder I have been waiting years for an Eastern European restaurant and Biergarten did not disappoint. My experience is so far based only on one visit, but that will be changing quickly I'm sure. Anyway, I had the Polish sausage, which came with a couple slices of bread, fries, and sauerkraut. The kraut and sausage were perfect, which is not to say the rest was of poor quality. The leftover fries tasted good even a few hours later and didn't get that dried out taste that many fries will get when not fresh. The bread was just ok - it fit the meal but I would have preferred a roll of some sort, perhaps kaisar or kummelweck. For $9 I at first thought it was a little steep but it really is more of a meal than a "hotdog" and so I didn't mind the price once I saw my food. @Dalia: While I'm sure you would find it convenient, restaurants should not be expected to break the law to please their customers. If you want to drink in a college town then you need to have an ID. This isn't limited to Biergarten, many places won't even let you in, much less serve you, without the proper papers. read more

If you are looking for a truly authentic Czech bar then this is the place to be!! It is owned and operated by Czech people who built up the decor themselves so you literally feel you are in Europe with the big wooden tables and wooden decor etc so it makes the atmosphere really fantastic. The beer is all European and tasty, which is served in traditional stein glasses and you can sample yummy sausage from the grill that stays open late past regular kitchen hours unlike other places. I have been there for lunch mid week( which was very tasty, quick and reasonable priced) music was mellow and I was able to have a great luncheon with a friend. I then came back for one of the Polka bands on the weekend and the atmosphere was electrifying with people dancing and cheering with laughter. I must say I had the best fun in years right here in Boulder. I recommend you visit this place at different times as it has so many different things to offer. read more

The service was attentive, friendly and thoughtful, but customers may need to be a bit patient at times since this place can be mobbed and the crowd's voices tend to get louder when people make themselves heard. The restrooms were very clean and well maintained--something which can be very revealing in how a restaurant/bar is run and managed. The décor is intended to harken back to Bavarian, Czech or Austrian beer halls of a century ago--so it's very rustic, vintage, and possibly different than what many spoiled Americans may feel it should be. The owner is Czech and made a specific point to create a cultural experience which is the culmination of a gamut of subtle specifics. If you know what you're looking at, the very thoughtful details really make this place feel like experiencing a blast from the past in old Europe. The visuals are almost like a movie set. The beer selection is a great fit for this place; the food was very good, and comparable to what I've tasted in beer-halls in Bavaria, Austria, and the Munich Oktoberfest. But some items on the menu were a bit pricey. Be sure to note the specials for a better value. Nonetheless, this place offers a very Gemütlich and down-to-earth experience--something which is long overdue in foodie-oriented, and often snobby Boulder. Be sure to check their web site for scheduled live ethnic entertainment. But the music is otherwise a recorded or satellite-radio international potpourri which includes traditional Bavarian, Czech and occasionally American tunes. I just hope the owner doesn't let the tail wag the dog and begin including the hard rock, hip-hop, etc. for the sake of pandering to the college crowds. Beer... Good selection and taste, atmosphere is good with nice rustic feel. The bartender brought over some beers and we asked him to put in a pretzel for us. Verbatim he says " well I'm bar tending today but a server will be back in 10 minutes or so and we'll get you taken care of" 25 minutes later I got a pretzel and a long awaited refill on my beer. Pretzel is good but not huge as stated, but homemade spicy mustard is truly traditional. The owner's Czech roots are demonstrated in this wonderful pub where the food is delightful, and the beer is fresh and cold and as equally as divine as the native appetizers and main courses. Had a wonderful meal at Bohemian Biergarten today! As we walked by, the outdoor seating grabbed our eye. First, I must say that we experienced THE friendliest wait staff we have ever encountered at a restaurant! We interacted with 6 different employees, and they all made us feel extremely welcomed and as if they were delighted we were there. We truly felt at home. We asked our waitress for food recommendations and followed her recommendations by ordering the Jagerschnitzel, Sausage Sandwich, and pretzel. The Jagerschnitzel was fantastic, and the potato salad that accompanied the sandwich was unique and flavorful. The pretzel was great as well, and the sausage was packed with flavor. I love the Bohemian Biergarten! The service is fantastic- the bartenders and waitstaff are very friendly, quirky and fun to talk to. I have never had a bad experience (and I go here a lot). The food is a little pricey (but then again, what in Boulder is not?) unless you go during happy hour but it's also really tasty. I usually order their pierogis, which are served with a delicious cheese sauce. They also have a German Stammtisch that meets, which is really exciting to me because it's a good way to speak and learn German and meet others who do, too. read more

I walked outside for a second after eating my dinner, and had to pass through the doorman check point to get back in. They insisted in stamping my hand on re-entry. Being in my 40's, I dont feel I need ink stamped on my hand like I am a 21 year old. I finally let them stamp me to avoid confrontation. They told me this was the law, which is untrue, and then proceeded to harass my girlfriend and tell her that I am a prick. I am an prick because I am a 40 year old man that doesnt want ink stamped on my hand? I understand this is a college town, but I am obviously an older guy. Get your dick door guys in check. We visited in July with a large group of German friends from the Denver area, and we were overcharged by hundreds of dollars on a credit transaction, as were friends of ours in the same party!! tHIS WAS DONE WITHOUT SIGNING FOR THE CHARGES!!! After numerous phone calls, and a few days later, the charges were finally reversed, and we were issued a gift card to come visit again. Today, we used that gift card, and had terrible service (had to hunt down a waitress, who was busy chatting to the bartender), had mediocre food, had to listen to overly loud middle eastern music, and had to wait for just about everything (restaurant was less than 50% full, if that). Nothing about this restaurant made me feel it was a German establishment, other than long tables. It is dirty, dingy, dark and cold. When I spoke to the manager, and asked him why they call this a Bohemian Biergarten, when it is so far from being German, he said that it is a Czech restaurant. Lesson from a teacher: bier garten is German (if it were czech it would be pivní zahrada). Bohemian is commonly taken to mean "home of the Boii" (from the Germanic root *haima- meaning "world, home"). The word "Bohemian" was never used by the local Czech (Slavic) population.[ It was not until the 19th century that other European languages began to use words related to "Czechs" in a deliberate (and successful) attempt to distinguish between Bohemian Slavs and other inhabitants of Bohemia. The latter were mostly ethnic Germans. So the name is misleading, if not fraudulent. the food is horrible, and it is nothing but a cheap trick dive college bar disguised as a legitimate German establishment. We will never frequent this establishment again, and we will make sure all of our German friends and acquaintances know to avoid this place at all costs. Do not waste your time if you are looking for real German food and culture. read more

The bouncers are rude, I had half of my beer left at closing and they kicked me out of the bar forcefully. They literally took my beer and pushed me out in an unprofessional way. Beer is pretty good and decent deals on boots! Dessert isn't bad...had the strudel. However, service could be better...I come from the service industry and this was pretty embarrassing all around. Went in on a Tuesday for trivia but there was a private event so no trivia that night. The table next to us ended up having their friend bring trivial pursuit from home and struck up a conversation and offered to include us in a game. The waiter, Grady, started off great but quickly went downhill. And no, it wasn't busy. Had to go to the bar to get his attention. Then at the end, even though we were not together, arrived at different times, had separate checks through the the night, we (party of three) and the table next to us (another party of three) ended up getting our bills combined and getting the 20% automatically added because of the party of 6 or more rule. When we got our combined bill and asked for our bills to be divided into the two parties he said we would need to mark everything down because he was confused what belonged to who (note, the bills were separate until the end when we each ordered a pretzel and one strudel to cap the night). We did so and I asked that he split into two. His response was, "just give me two cards." When I responded that we were separate parties and that we were each going to work out our own payment (sorry, I don't know them) he was reluctant still and asked, "why, are you leaving at different times?". For the third time I said that I don't know them or when they are leaving but we need separate checks. He finally stopped pushing and separated the checks after we spelled it out for him. However, the party of 6 or more 20% was still applied to both checks. I usually tip 20-25% but the fact that we ordered mostly beer, his service sucked, and he refused to make things right, I didn't want to leave 20%; he didn't deserve it. The fact that he would provide excuses for why he shouldn't split the checks is ridiculous, especially when he made it difficult to begin with. What, are you not allowed to talk to the table next you without getting a combined bill and needing to work out payment amongst strangers? read more

This is a cool place in the sense that it's unique and refreshing to the town. They have a bunch of German and Czech beers on tap, and some authentic German bar food, which is something I've longed to find in Boulder. I normally go in because you can get liter-sized steins of beer for about $8 during happy hour. The decor is cool and dimly lit. They have the huge biergarten-style picnic tables and a back room with a second bar and a stage for late night bands and such. Most of the time I've came here has been for the drinks, not really the food. I've only had the french fries here but they had an interesting selection of mustards which I can imagine are great on their brats. It is a fun place to get a beer and the late night crowd is always great, not the standard college/frat nonsense. The reason it gets 2 stars is the poor service. No need to count on the servers to bring you anything within a timely manner. Just walk 3 feet to the bar. It takes them forever to do any task really, even when it's slow. Waiting for the check? 10 minutes. Waiting for a menu? 10 minutes. I don't even know why they bother with front-of-house staff. Second of all, I've had the pleasure of dealing with an extremely rude bartender. I came in with some friends quite late one night (around 1 am) and since I hadn't been in for some time, I didn't remember what the beers were like since they are all European beers mostly. It was busy so I didn't feel like asking the bartender for some samplers and I just asked him for a beer that was dark and not too malty. That's it! His response to me, verbatim, was "It's 1:30 why do you care?". Just because it's 1:30 doesn't mean I don't care what I'm gonna drink. If it's $6 you bet I'm gonna care. I laughed in his face and left. Went down the street to catacombs where you can get a solid drink from a bartender that knows how to smile. I think the lack of reviews mentioning gluten-free food are probably due to the fact that those who can't eat gluten probably think (like me) that they can't eat here. Well, surprise! This atmospheric, charmingly decorated and authentic feeling German-style pub has many gluten-free menu items and the waiters (at least one) really seemed to "get" gluten-free, especially when I explained I had Celiac. We got the big platter with three sausages, swapping out the "bier" one for smoked pork, and enjoyed the red and white cabbage and gluten-free fries. We came on Christmas Eve with friends and really loved the atmosphere, our super-nice waiter and the awesome GLUHWEIN. It was like a gluten-free friendly German Christmas market, without the market. I have not ever been to a place like this where I could actually eat the food, so I was delighted to get to try something new and fun. We went back a few days later for my brother-in-law's birthday. They had goulash and pierogies and seemed to enjoy both. The service is not the fastest I've ever had, but not rage-inducing, and waiters were pleasant and smart about not putting the gluten bread (that we had put on a separate plate for the glutenoids) right next to me. Very unimpressed with the bouncers here. Politely asked what their policy was on letting patrons in, as about 10 would exit before they would let anyone new in. I received an extremely rude response, as well as the bouncer intentionally holding my friends back once I entered. Same bouncer in question refused to let me finish my question interrupting me multiple times until I was able to finish. Did not spend one dime here and will not return. read more
