I wanted to like it here so much but after spoiled chicken, expired rice, expired cottage cheese, green potatoes, old and mushy avocados, and the almost being up-charged for returning the rotten chicken, I gotta say noooooope. I heard about this place from a coworker. At first, it was just a few others checking it out. Then it turned into the normal lunch spot, sometimes daily for some! I was looking for something different one day and said "eh what the hey?! why not stop in to see what's up". Honestly, it looks like just some normal grocery store, nothing special at all. However, the real value is in the daily lunch specials that they offer. For just a couple bucks, you can get a freshly made chicken breast sandwich, Italian beef, burger or tacos (depending on the day). Of course, there are plenty of sides to choose and even a full salad bar. For as many fast food places that are in the area, this is a hidden gem for sure. read more

On my last day in Chicago, I ran over there instead of down to CVS or across to the East Tower overpriced Starbucks store. It was a pleasant surprise. Pretzel rolls!!! Yum. That's all I really have to say. Try their pretzel rolls and then thank me later. Other than that, Bockwinkel's is just fine. We shop here more out of necessity than any other reason, since we live upstairs. It has less of a selection, and higher prices, than a supermarket, but that's to be expected. Oh, and they don't have white American cheese, which makes me sad. But they DO have a movie rental vending machine in the entryway, which is SO convenient. read more

most wednesdays in the summer, a few friends and i gather for live orchestra music in millennium park. it's a beautiful scene -- wine, friends, the summer air. and chicken. oh yeah, there's chicken. as the people around us are daintily nibbling on mini carrots and hummus, we tear into a fresh roast chicken from bockwinkel's. juicy and well seasoned, this is a pretty darn good rotisserie chicken. add a baguette and maybe some grapes, and this is a good meal for about 3-4 hungry people. i'll fight you for a piece of the skin. summer is short. eat some chicken and roll around in the grass. read more

Super convenient if you're in the Lakeshore East area. Growing selection of your basic groceries and they often have not so basic items a well. The deli is great for lunch sandwiches. Warning - prices are high but you're paying for convenience. And they're open till midnight. I am taking away one star as the female cashiers always have an attitude and definitely don't want to be there. I come in 3x a week so I am sure it's not a one time thing. I work in an office building nearby and this is a great place to grab sandwiches and salads for lunch. Sandwiches are made fresh at the deli counter. The salad bar has a great selection of veggies and other toppings (like giardinara, cranberries, premade salads, fruit etc etc). They also have nice grilled chicken breast on the salad bar, not mystery meat chicken that you may get at chain salad places. Best of all is that they always offer you $2 coupons off a $7 purchase at the salad bar or deli. I make a pretty hearty salad and it still only costs me about $5-6 with the coupon. A co-worker introduced me to Bockwinkle's, stating that they have the best salad bar and soups around - and I agree! They always have a great selection of soups (and have all the nutritional information available online and at the shop). Their salad bar is always fresh and it's much cheaper than the others around ($5.99/lb). I was surprised at how good their Friday Special was: the taco! I thought it would taste cheap ($1.79), but it was very large, flavorful, and fresh. Plus, they always have $2 off coupons (when you spend $6 or more on soup, salad, or bakery items). Very, very Rude treatment from Bockwinkel's Grocery Store on Ohio at McClurg in Chicago. 8-10-2017 I went to ask a question of the Manager regarding a receipt from a purchase yesterday. The register clerk was very polite but the man I asked to speak to refused to talk to me. He turned his back to me and walked away twice. He has been there since the store opened. I followed him into the store and asked him if he would answer my questions. He said "that is what he hires clerks for" and other unpleasant things. When I asked him if he was a Manager, he said "No, I am the owner". But I find that hard to believe. I am shocked to be treated so offensively and that this store does not care if they keep a customer. Plus, I was only going to point out that they had under-charged me yesterday. I have gone out of my may to give this store business since it opened because they have so very few customers. But I will no longer shop at Bockwinkel's where I am treated crudely. read more

I work at an office building nearby and have used their catering service twice for cookie and fruit trays. The trays were delivered picture perfect. The fruit was a fresh assortment of melons, strawberries, grapes and kiwi. The cookie tray was an assortment of chocolate chip, oatmeal, sugar, red velvet and peanut butter with peanut halves baked in. First, I liked the location on Michigan Ave much, much better. It was bigger for one thing and was just nicer overall. The salad bar at this location is really small and has just the basics. They generally have quite a few different soups to choose from which is a bonus. There is a deli special each day of the week (doesn't change from week to week) which range from $.99-$2.99. One of the specials is kosher hot dogs and they made me sick so I won't be going back for those. I work a block away so it's a nice change if you're eating out and want a healthy alternative. read more

I really like the prepared meals to go, such as salmon with wild rice or grilled vegetables and cous cous. The produce is very fresh and there is a nice assortment of frozen low-cal meals in the freezer section (kashi, amy's organic, lean cuisine), which is a godsend for lunch options. i would never have found this place had a coworker not told me about it. looking up Stetson from Randolph, you'd never guess this place was here next to the health club. very glad my coworker told me though. working in the Prudential building, I had become accustomed to paying for it a Market Fresh. this place being so close is such a welcomed alternative. I plan to sample each of the daily specials since they are such a great value. I started with the Italian Beef yesterday, and it was definitely acceptable. It's no Luke's or Al's or Portillo's, but it will definitaly do for $3.99. I also forsee myself taking advantage of the salad bar every once in a while, and once summmer hits I'll probably be grabbing a tall can of beer here before walking over to the lake to sip on it after a long day at work. read more

Bockwinkel's is very close to where I live and more convenient to get to than the trek to Domincks. They have an awesome salad bar, where I get my lunch from 5 days a week. You'd probably save a couple of bucks if you went to J-Osco or Dominicks... but for a quick grocery fix, this place is the best. You get everything, from pizza cutters to ice cream! read more
