First time coming here, I've always been over in this part of the city frequently but never knew about this grocery store prior or one existed in the heart of the city. This place is in the perfect spot too and it's truly a hidden gem. They have daily specials in their deli though unfortunately they don't serve their specials in the morning. The store is really clean and the best part of this store was that everything here is affordable! Nothing is grossly overpriced! You can also find everything you need from grab and go snacks, drinks and groceries here as well! It's exactly like being in a New York City style bodega! We ordered two breakfast sandwiches on ChowNow for pickup. I was a bit early and didn't see any employees in the store. When someone came out I mentioned I was picking up an order. I understood I was a few minutes early and the guy went right away to make the sandwiches which I appreciated. Though when we got them, they were cold and not cooked. The English muffins weren't toasted, the cheese wasn't melted and the egg/meat were cold. They were inedible. I reached out to ChowNow who credited me $1.50 for "missing ingredients" which wasn't right. I reached out to Bockwinkel's explaining the issue and requested a refund. The staff is helpful & friendly. This location is super convenient to a bunch of different hotels. Prices are reasonable, they have a ton of options for whatever you're looking for. I was mainly looking for a grab and go breakfast / lunch / dinner options. My hotel didn't have a refrigerator so I'd pop over for meals and the staff was super accommodating to give little sizes and had a nice variety. I mainly stuck to the deli case and the fresh baked items. Also I was looking for vegetarian items, and they had a good selection. They had stuff for meat eaters too, don't worry. What a find! A real grocery store in the middle of downtown!! They have a fresh and delicious salad bar. Pay by the weight. They have 3 kinds of hot soup. They also have a deli with a great selection of quality meats, cheeses and prepared salads. You can get a freshly made sandwich to go. This is not a convenience store even though it is convenient, it is a true grocery store. An upscale store with quality food items. I stayed next door at the Hyatt Regency for a week as I attended the Lifesaver's Conference 2022. This place was an absolute godsend. It is a special place tucked away on the corner of Stetson near Park Millennium. They have a nice loading zone area for 15 minutes. It is a well thought out spot that greets you with a small area up front where you can eat one of their famous deli sandwiches or salads. Then you veer off to the right where shopping carts and salad bar await followed by fresh produce and meats. I love their perfectly portioned steaks, chops, sausages, and fresh hamburger. Then you pass the bread rack and sample size bites of cakes, fresh salads pre-made and the Deli and freshly roasted chickens! It has fresh meats to slice and salads and sandwiches in box lunch or single. They are so fresh! Staff are friendly! Snack, health care items and liquor aisle, frozen food and treats, fresh breads, desserts, pet food, beverages, fresh dairy, ice cream, frozen pies, paper and can goods, housewares, and a great place to power shop. It is my usual Friday night stop on the way home. Up Lake, take a left at Stetson and you are there. I love the black grocery bags- so classy. For a long time, I assumed this was a tiny grocery/deli with a hot bar for the local Aon, Prudential, etc. work crowd. Totally wrong! It's an actual medium-sized supermarket with every food category AND produce, deli, hot bar, large alcohol selection, etc. They might just stock one brand of a specific type of food, but I've never left thinking "ugh, still missing ingredient X for a recipe" like you might after leaving our beloved Trader Joe's. Cashier and stock personnel are always friendly and helpful. read more

"What can I help you with young man?" Her facial expression? Glacial. Tone? About as welcoming as the Democrats in the Brett Kavanaugh hearing. Eye contact? Cold blooded with years of cussing (not cursing or swearing) people out behind them. My response: "I would like a quarter pound of smoked turkey breast on wheat." Her response: What else young man? At this point, "young man" sounded just like "muthaf*cker" but maybe I was sensitive. My response: Spinach, tomato, light honey mus..." Before I could say "mustard," I was cut off with another "what else young man?" Now, at this point, I was tempted to say, "I'm not going to be too many young mans." But I smirked and answered respectfully, and she gave me a "I'm-handling-your-food-young man (which at this point I will swear that she meant muthaf*cker), be nice to me kinda look. I politely snatched my sandwich from the scale and walked to the register before I heard her tell the next customer: "What can I help you with young man?" So, here is what I advise, if you walk to the sandwich counter, beat her to the punch with this: "Old woman, I would like the..." and say it with the same confidence that Brett Kavanaugh had with his affinity for beer!!! I'm a little disappointed in this place today. I got an Italian already made sandwich from their deli area. the line to the actual deli was a bit long and I was on the run so just decided this would be quicker. Also grabbed a fudge brownie. The brownie was fantastic! The sandwich was less than desirable. You can see for yourself in the pictures below. The meat still had frozen ice on it and impossible to bite into as it was freezing cold. The bread was defrosted already but everything else was just not good. I was actually here the day before and grabbed a case of beer that was sold in a can that no where else sold. Also grabbed a bottle of water and the checkout process was pretty good. I gave it a 2 star because i would have given 4 for yesterday and 1 today. Maybe I will try the salad bar next time. Maybe. The very interesting things about the store: As you walk in, there are seats right on front of you. You enter the store on the right. (outside of the store, there are plenty of outside seating which is fab!). Soon as you enter, you're greeted with the salad bar on your left. As you enter farther, all the deli stuff is right in front of you. As you walk around the salad bar, you're at the soup station and there are several choices to choose from. On the other side of the salad bar is the deli counter where sandwiches can be made to order as well as lots of options for pastries. In front of that are some already made sandwiches and pastries to go. there is nothing fancy here however. As you turn to the right after the deli counter, there is an oven with roasted chicken and other things going on inside. if you don't noticed it you can seriously burn yourself! and just after that is a whole couple of isles of booze - all sorts: hard liquor, wine and beers. Further in is a fridge of booze as well for those wanting it cold right on the spot. Once you exit out and walk into (after the bottle neck of the store) you're in a grocery store with a pretty good variety of every day household needs. There are a few cashier stations as you exit. The lines usually go pretty quickly. I looked at my receipt and it seemed there are taxes and fees for everything! including water... lol. that's just so new to me lol. the good thing... $2 off next $7 purchase in salad bar, desserts and sandwiches... yay! read more

This place is convenient located next to my apartment and has a good selection of meats and cheeses. That being said, the people that work behind the deli counter are extremely rude. So rude that regardless how accessible it is to my home, I have elected to never return. Brianna that works in the deli section is the worst of all, providing the worst customer service I have ever experienced. It's extremely disappointing. I have waited to post this review in hopes her attitude would turn around the more she saw me. When she approaches me, she does not say a word, just looks at me like I am an idiot. When I proceed to tell her what I want on my sandwich, if I talk slow enough for her to process, she nods her head signaling me to speed it up. The next time I went in, I sped it up, and then she got visibly frustrated and extremely rudely told me to slow down. I don't like posting negative reviews and rarely do, but her behavior is extreme and unnecessary. Not a bad place to get lunch if you work around the area. From the deli, you can get a decent sandwich and a soup for $6-7 out the door. It's listed at $8, but after you eat there once, ask for a $2 off card to get the discount going forward. Sandwiches are standard, stuff you can make at home but I like the variety you have here with meats and cheeses. You can choose any in the deli window. Soups are a little greasy/fatty from time to time but still good. Other than that it's a grocery store that seems to be a little pricey, but you gotta appreciate the small local spots. read more

This is a great grocery store in the city. I went there and picked up ice cream that was on special to take back to my hotel. Since I was visiting Chicago, I didn't have flatware in the hotel, but the staff quickly realized I'd need spoons and directed me to the spoons by the soups they sell. I was able to get in and out of there very quickly, the hallmark of any great convenience store. I'm going back when I'm in the area. read more

This small upscale grocery store is next to the Lakeshore Athletic Club at Illinois Center. You can get a sandwich, pastries, or warm dishes here. This Bockwinkel's is a place I visit often. I am most definitely what you would call "a regular". I come here for both the convenience (I live exactly one block away) and because everyone who works here is as friendly as can be. They have a pretty extensive salad bar, a deli counter, and really delicious baked goods that I believe they bake in store daily. Their large sized "everything" cookie is my favorite and almost too yummy! It's always clean and brightly lit with a nice atmosphere. The only reason I have deducted a star is because their prices are generally a lot higher (for the exact same products) than stores like Mariano's and Jewel Osco. Altogether I enjoy shopping here and will continue to do so for as long as I continue living a block away. Special shout out to Jason who is just one of the nicest guys you will ever meet! I expect to pay more in the city, it's a given, however, Bockwinkel's uses tactics like putting deli foods at prices per half pound and having items in the cooler with no price showing. I would think to show some customer service they would at least open the door for you.
