I stupidly thought going to lunch at Winkel 43 would be a little bit easier than the long queue outside suggested so we decided to wander and found this place instead. We were attracted by their bountiful vegetarian options. I'm going to start with one of my dining companions who ordered the small vegetarian platter as her meal and freaked out that it would be too big after ordering it. It was pretty big but to no one's surprise, she had no problem tackling the whole thing. It contained a little sampling of many of their vegetarian options including a hummus, cheese, jackfruit something, a salad, rolls, and vegan sausage. This is a great way to try a bunch of different things or a solution if you can't decide what to order. GF and I did a similar sampling and ordered a few items to share: vegetarian or vegan (can't remember) bitterballen, vegan sausage sandwich, fries, and I couldn't resist trying MUSTARD SOUP. We had made our decision on the first few items but at the buzzer when placing our order, I noticed "mustard soup" and had to inquire what on earth that was. The waitress explained that it is literally mustard, cream, and broth and as as a mustard stan, I couldn't let this opportunity pass me by and added that to the order. The mustard soup was actually amazing, had onions which I hate but it was so good I was able to overlook that. The bitterballen were crispy and tasty. The vegan sausage sandwich was nothing outrageous but simple and got the job done. The fries include regular shoe-string fries, curly fries, and sweet potato fries with 3 dipping sauces. Don't ask me what the sauces were or which one I preferred because they were all satisfying in their own way. This is a great order to share. BEST MEAL OF OUR TRIP! We were able to try several different foods (tapas style), and it was all superb! We started with a fun Olive plate and added a fun Friet late with 3 different types of fries and dips. These were great appetizers, but our Vlees (medium size) Plate was even better - too many different things on it to list! I think we had 5 different types of meat, assorted veggies & dips, and toasted breads - SO GOOD! Three adults (2M & 1F) shared this, and we couldn't eat it all! Amazing kapsalon. The fries were so crispy and their pulled chicken was so well flavored. It was from like the butcher down the street so it's amazing. The little pico on top with the thin layer of gouda, coupled with the garlic aoili and a smudge of the spicy sauce. Everything I wanted in a snack. Came into Boca's as a plan B in case another local place was too busy to get into. And are we glad we did. The place is small, as most places in Amsterdam are, approximately 12 tables. Found a table for 4 and not knowing the drill here, I had go ask for English menus. Turns out your get an ordering sheet. Shortly after retrieving an ordering sheet, our server came by to take a drink order. Within no time the drinks were on the table and the orders were placed. We decided to go with onion soup, a burger and a grilled cheese sandwich. The soup was served in a glass, which seemed a bit odd. What was not odd was the soup... it was delicious ! The onion soup tasted like it had cayenne pepper in it. A very interesting twist on onion soup. The sandwiches were also very tasty. You order by checking off a list of items (3-4 items per person is the right amount.) The setting is nice, with outdoor seating overlooking a canal. Probably would have ordered a few more if he had known how small they are - I tried to tell him but he didn't listen. He had the steak (tried it, it's alright) and chicken. I had the the Brie, the jamon, and the chicken. We shared the strawberry jam. The seasoning/pickling of the cucumber was divine!!! So was the tomato! We fancied some good fries/chips and did a search for the best fries in Amsterdam. One place consistently came up, but was closing within 20 minutes, so that was out. This was mentioned a few times, so we figured it was worth checking out as we wanted an excuse to explore the Jordaan area anyway. On a Wednesday at 6:30pm, all the tables were already reserved. We were allowed to sit as long as we were out before 8, which was fine with us. The vibe is casual cafe/bar, and is obviously popular for after-work drinks and large groups of friends. We ordered several small plates including the trio of fries, as well as a beer and wine. Food was OK, fries were decent but nothing special. Basically solid bar food, but it hit the spot and was what we were looking for, and didn't feel painfully expensive. Service seemed very stereotypically Dutch to my foreign brain. Straightforward to the point of being brusque, compared to American over-friendliness. But also efficient and quick, with thoughtful touches that had me convinced that it was a cultural thing rather than anything else. Fairly loud music, a mix of 80s and 90s chart hits and popular hip hop, which I enjoyed. I loved the intimate vibe but was not the biggest fan of their platters. There are three types of platters or boards: meat, cheese, and fish (or seafood, I forget). Each board comes in three different sizes. There is also a mixed board that combines all their boards. This is the board my boyfriend and I got. The board comes with two different types of cheese, "beef carpaccio" (was really more of a steak), fried fish, beef stew and a whole bunch of bread. I had the impression that the meats were going to be more of charcuterie type of meat. As a result, the dish was really hearty which made it hard to enjoy after dinner. The bread was okay. It wasn't as crispy, light and fluffy as I'd like it to be. I was also hoping for more cheese. Overall, my favorites were the fried fish and cheeses. We also got the trio fries platter which is their other popular food item. I thought the fries were OK. It was slightly cold and soggy. Hopefully, it was just an off night? Now moving onto their drink menu. I only looked at the wine selection which I thought was okay. There's a few selection for each type and they're all reasonably priced. I was disappointed because I was hoping for more a traditional cheese and charcuterie board. However, if all of the meat and fish selection sounds good to you then this place is worth checking out! read more

Boca's made my Amsterdam short list because the description I came across for it was basically like "mini sandwiches, tapas style". Like, you get to order 4-5 small sandwiches and that's your dinner? Um, sold. We ambled up around 9pm on a Saturday night - it never occurred to me to make a reservation and it seemed we lucked out with a table. Surprisingly, there was not one, but TWO hen (bachelorette) parties taking up the small, intimate space. But other than that, mostly couples and pairs of girlfriends catching up over drinks and small bites. No dudes (save for the dates) to be found except behind the bar or serving on the floor. A refreshing change to the bro-tastic vibe that permeates Amsterdam thanks to roving drunk friend gangs and stag parties. The music was loud (but not obnoxiously so) and definitely catered to the hen party vibe: Cyndi Lauper, TLC, Spice Girls, Lauryn Hill; but also some fantastic 80s gems like Toto. Reading that back it sounds like it was awful but it wasn't - it made for an upbeat atmosphere without being *too* cliche somehow. Don't ask me how, it just worked. So the menu is really, really varied with influences from Argentina, China, USA, Holland, Spain, Japan. Which meant "sandwiches" was interpreted as rolls, empanadas, bruschetta, etc. We ended up with a lobster roll, the spicy beef empanada, and the flank steak and brie bruschetta, as well as not-sandwich items including the watermelon and feta salad with balsamic dressing, ribeye strips in hoisin sauce and a trio of fries. It was sort of hit or miss for me: the empanada was a tad too spicy for me and bit too greasy. The salad was super refreshing/lovely, the fries perfectly cooked and came with 3 good sauces. The bruschetta plate could have used something to balance all the heavy meat and cheese - a cartelise onion jam or something? - it was just too rich. The wine by the glass selection was sparse and I ended up with a ho-hum tempranillo. But when my husband asked what they had on tap, the server immediately offered to make him "his favourite" which was a local beer and lemonade mix (a Dutch shandy - fun). Perfectly suited to the hot night. Prices ranged from €5-€10 for each small plate. It was a decent all-rounder due to the stellar service, good music and atmosphere, varied menu to appeal to all tastes and good (though not amazing) food. read more

The food was delicious and the presentation was amazing! My husband and I shared the small fish plate and the small meat plate and 2 appetizers, we were both very full. The service was the best that we have received in Europe which is why we tipped our server. I can not remember her name but she was great! Big smile, very nice and helpful. Staying in Amsterdam for the weekend and this place was highly recommended. We called around 5 to set up a appointment for 8:30 that night for a party of four people. Reservation booked until we get a call at 6:30, saying another earlier party will be late and therefore we must miss our reservation. No other explanation, just told us you don't have a table anymore due to no fault of our own. No apologies or effort to accommodate our party in any other way. Just a, sorry have a good night. Stopped in for a quick lunch today while strolling through Jordaan and ended up staying two and a half hours. The lunch menu consisted primarily of small sandwiches made with great combinations of cheeses and spreads and a wide array of meats on homemade small buns. Sounds semi-interesting but they pack some great flavor profiles on those buns. And they are only $3-4 euro each. My husband ordered the Tom Yum Soup and had the best Greek salad ever. The beer was cold and wine selection short but delicious. And the music was fabulous. The wait staff was very friendly and welcoming. Filled with mostly locals from the neighborhood and usually requires a reservation most evenings. We loved it! read more
