    Grilled Cheese & hamburger

Came into Boca's as a plan B in case another local place was too busy to get into. And are we glad we did. The place is small, as most places in Amsterdam are, approximately 12 tables. Found a table for 4 and not knowing the drill here, I had go ask for English menus. Turns out your get an ordering sheet. Shortly after retrieving an ordering sheet, our server came by to take a drink order. Within no time the drinks were on the table and the orders were placed. We decided to go with onion soup, a burger and a grilled cheese sandwich. The soup was served in a glass, which seemed a bit odd. What was not odd was the soup... it was delicious ! The onion soup tasted like it had cayenne pepper in it. A very interesting twist on onion soup. The sandwiches were also very tasty. Overall, the food was great, and the service was spot on, and friendly. I would definitely recommend Boca's for a lunch spot, and would go back again.

Strawberry and chocolate, Brie and cucumber, chicken Parmesan, steak, jamon and tomato (left to right)

We had the tapas style mini sandwiches (seems to only be available till 4pm, if that's what you're after). 1 Strawberry jam with chocolate shavings - 3.5/5 1 Brie with cucumber 3.5/5 1 Jamon (ham) and tomato with butter 4.5/5 1 Steak 4/5 2 Parmesan chicken 5/5 Shared with my boyfriend for a late lunch. Probably would have ordered a few more if he had known how small they are - I tried to tell him but he didn't listen. He had the steak (tried it, it's alright) and chicken. I had the the Brie, the jamon, and the chicken. We shared the strawberry jam. The seasoning/pickling of the cucumber was divine!!! So was the tomato! The seasoning of the veggies made both those sandwiches what they are. The Parmesan chicken is a must! Delicious! This place is a great spot if you're in the Albert Cuyp market area.

We fancied some good fries/chips and did a search for the best fries in Amsterdam. One place consistently came up, but was closing within 20 minutes, so that was out. This was mentioned a few times, so we figured it was worth checking out as we wanted an excuse to explore the Jordaan area anyway. On a Wednesday at 6:30pm, all the tables were already reserved. We were allowed to sit as long as we were out before 8, which was fine with us. The vibe is casual cafe/bar, and is obviously popular for after-work drinks and large groups of friends. We ordered several small plates including the trio of fries, as well as a beer and wine. Food was OK, fries were decent but nothing special. Basically solid bar food, but it hit the spot and was what we were looking for, and didn't feel painfully expensive. Service seemed very stereotypically Dutch to my foreign brain. Straightforward to the point of being brusque, compared to American over-friendliness. But also efficient and quick, with thoughtful touches that had me convinced that it was a cultural thing rather than anything else. Fairly loud music, a mix of 80s and 90s chart hits and popular hip hop, which I enjoyed. This review is for the Jordaan location, which doesn't seem to be listed on Yelp yet, hopefully we can get it added since reading the reviews it's clear people are going to both branches and reviewing for just the De Pijp location.

He said water, so I assumed it was it was tinted from the lighting. When I took a sip it was a flavored water. I asked if it was gluten-free and he was very rude in his response. Basically was like um yea it just has spices in it. Spices may not be gluten free and could be of concern for a celiac. I asked him if any drinks were gluten free and he said all but 2. I wasn't confident that the drinks would be made separately from the non- gluten drinks so I opted not to get one. My friend got the bees knees and said it was really tasty. The server did come back and switch my water to regular at the end but he should have been upfront with what he gave to prevent any exposure to peoples allergies.

The space is really cool, with some neat lit-up signs behind the bar and antique paintings on the ceiling. I tried a few cocktails and they were all tasty. These included the Flying Dutchmen -- their signature cocktail -- and the Umami Margarita. I was a bit hesitant about the Dutchmen because it was with gin and orange, but I liked it a lot. The margarita was unusual with some mushroom dust on the rim. Our server was very friendly and helpful.

Thanks to Iago from NJoy, we heard about this soeakeasy and decided to check it out. Reservations…read morerecommended. Carlota who answered the doorbell, was able to accommodate us at the bar (our preferred seating anyway). She took our coats, placed them in the coat closet up front and led us inside. Once seated, we were given gorgeous ruby red complimentary aperitif (hibiscus, honey, ginger). The drink menu is interesting, based on the concept of growing up, with more basic tastes to start and more mature complex tastes later on in life. (The drinks are more complex the later in the menu). I ordered the Awake at Last, and my husband ordered the Ruby Stone. Mine was sweet and coffee flavored and his was more tart and sour cherry flavored. When I tried his drink, I immediately felt nostalgic because it reminded me of umeboshi (pickled plum in Japanese food), so we ended up trading drinks. Both were great for supping. Sitting at the bar was fun, watching the bartender at his work. He was silent, focused, skilled, professional. So glad we checked it out! I didn't post pictures of the entrance or inside because I'll leave it to you to discover! (The fun of a speakeasy).

My husband and I were in Zürich before coming to Amsterdam and met a friend who is from Amsterdam…read more He recommended Pulitzer's Bar- so we immediately called and made a reservation. We were going on a boat tour that afternoon, to see all the light installations, so we made sure the timing was right to get to Pulitzer's on time! We had a 6:00 reservation, and got there promptly and found the door that we were to enter. The door was locked, but there was a sign that said 'please wait, someone will be with you soon'. Our wait was very short, and someone promptly came, greeted us and took us to our seats at the bar. Because a reservation, I believe is required, (not 200% about that), we were wondering if it would be a bit stuffy. It was not at all, everyone that we spoke to was very friendly, and great service at the bar. There were other couch settings and a few different set ups, but as usual, we love the bar. Our drinks were fabulous and we tried three of their menu items- only have appetizers, but they were very good. In talking to my sister and her husband, after we returned home, who had just been to Amsterdam, I realized that they stayed at the Pulitzer hotel, which we did not know when we were there. They loved the hotel - so I can give a recommendation for that as well. They said all the rooms are different and they really loved their room. I think everyone would really enjoy a stay at the Pulitzer hotel and definitely get a reservation to Pulitzer's bar- you won't be disappointed.
