After further discussion I was informed the shop was able work on modern cars as well. Since then they've been servicing my family's cars and have had nothing but positive experiences. No integrity. Stay away. I took my 73 Bronco there to have the brand new Holley Carburetor adjusted for a hesitation. They told me it was bad and that I needed a new one. They put the new Autozone carb on there, and then told me I needed a new engine as it had low oil pressure. Due to their good Yelp reviews and length in business, I trusted them and paid them a hefty sum for new engine. When they put the new engine in, they said I needed a new radiator (things should have started to add up for me). The heavy-duty radiator from Tom's Bronco has been put in less than 100 miles before I brought it in. For some reason Mitch justified it to me so spent the money. Again should have added this up. I get the Bronco back and there were immediately 2 problems I had to fix. 1) they broke the connection on one of the sparkplug wires so it was running rough (why didn't they notice this before delivering it to me), I triaged it and put on new cables and all is good. 2) They made the throttle cable brace out of flimsy metal, and it bent backwards every time you stepped on the gas and got caught in the spring. (not safe). So I made a new brace. Then after 400 or 500 miles of driving I was continuing to have weird issues with temperature. I called and they said they were too busy to take it any sooner than 3 weeks, but I could take it to another reputable mechanic and the engine was under warranty. I took it to a longstanding garage in San Marcos to triage the temperature issues. They flushed the engine with 100 gallons of water as there was so much casting sand still in the Jasper engine, and then found a hose cap stuck in one of the hoses from the bottom of the radiator. They removed it, and the bronco runs better than it ever has. I called Mitch to see if Bob's carbs or Jasper would pay for the $1400 I had to incur to triage my "brand new radiator and engine". He said he would open a claim about the sand, its been several months and I have heard nothing. And he said "he didn't buy" the cap stuck in the hose. Convenient, since no one touched the radiator and engine since he put it in. I asked him if the obstruction could have caused the issue of why he put a new radiator (when I already put one in). He conveniently couldn't remember. I have a lot more work I want done on the bronco. Not here. read more

I have learned the value of this approach in aviation, but it also applies to automobiles. Unfortunately, many people do not attend to the maintenance needs of their vehicles and then they expect mechanics to perform miracles at bargain-basement prices. The mechanics at Bob's Carbs know what they are doing, and they are extremely reliable. I own an 84 Chevy truck, and this is the only place I take it to get it serviced because I've had issues with other shops in nearby cities (Escondido and Vista) that claim they can work on a vehicle with a carburetor, but don't. Therefore, my truck just sits in their lot for weeks with no results. Bob's Carbs, on the other hand, has done major jobs on my vehicles with satisfactory results. Bob's Carbs replaced my engine on my 84 Chevy, and Mitch tells you that the warranty for the engine is with Jasper, not with the shop itself. Mitch and his crew also replaced my catalytic converter, front headlights, and replaced a bad fuel hose. My truck runs like new. Mitch and his crew have done work on my father's 2002 Kia Rio. They replaced the shocks and struts on it. My father is very happy as he claims he no longer feels "every bump on the road." Recently, I had a friend's 2002 Chevy Avalanche serviced after it was involved in an accident. She was satisfied that Mitch and his crew made her truck driveable again. Mitch has done an excellent job keeping me posted on the status of all the vehicles I've taken in to get serviced. Mitch also notifies me of any other other issues his mechanics catch while working on the vehicles. This is one of the few auto shops that has integrity. WARNING! Mitch at Bob's Carbs on Production Ave in Oceanside will discriminate against you for being disabled and financially challenged. After nearly a year of trying to fight for help in getting my vehicle fixed, someone had stepped up to try and pay for the repairs required. FINALLY! Yesterday I gave him a call and ask him to please call my friend that was offering to possibly pay for the repairs required. I was so happy and excited for there finally to be some hope. He said he would call her. He lied and did not call at all. I assumed he had followed through. So I told her he had to of called. Since he didn't call, he made me look like a liar to the friend that was trying to help. I called Mitch to find out if he had actually called her or not. I didn't even get to finish getting my question out, before he starts raising his voice at me and going off on me about how busy he is and how he can't deal with me right now. The unprofessionalism I just dealt with is unreal and disgusting. Any customer being treated that way is not OK! Especially a disabled, single mother that has been stuck for nearly 2 years with a broken vehicle (nearly a year asking strangers for help). He threw lies at me, raised his voice at me and pushed and provoked me into further mental and physical anguish. Making me cry, go into a full blown panic attack, vomiting and worse. He was talking down to me and didn't care that he unprofessional responded to a simple and innocent question. "Did you have a chance to reach out to my friend that wants to help me, yesterday?" that was all I said to trigger his unprofessional behavior and attitude towards me. No he refuses to fix my vehicle at all. Simply for standing up for myself, and not allowing him to talk down to me. I cannot let this go and I won't. I'm going public. Discrimination against disabled people is unacceptable and illegal. Single mothers do not go here, disabled people do not go here. Bob's Carbs gets a five star rating from me! We were next door at the smog test place and our car wasn't going to pass. We asked where we should go to have someone find out what needed to be fixed so we can pass smog. The gentleman said there were 2 different auto repair places in the center, both of them were good, but wouldn't recommend one over the other. For some reason I chose Bob's Carbs, Since my mother was with me and I'm Sure we looked like 2 women that you could take advantage of to most people. I was quite surprised when Mitch got up and started walking over to the car and looking under the hood. He figured out what the problem was in about 2 minutes. Then he didn't have the exact piece he needed to make the repair so he sent us away and made an appointment for my mom the following day. My mom went back, he fixed it and told her to drive for 100 miles and if the light came on again to bring it back. If the light didn't come on then when she brought her car next door to get it sniffed she could pay him. We drove over 100 miles and no light came on. Yesterday we had time to go back and get her car smogged and tried to pay Mitch and he wouldn't take any money from us. Most men would ask for more money from a woman or especially an old woman, but no Mitch. He didn't even ask for a dime. In my book he is a wonderful Christian man and we are blessed to have met him. I'm sure glad I stumbled across Mitch at Bobs. My '74 F250 wasn't running well at all, and they got it running like it should be and it was less expensive than I thought it would be. You don't stay in business (especially the automotive business) by not knowing your craft. Phil and Bob do a great job here. It's a carb shop yes BUT they do so much more. Maintenance services, failed smog check diagnostics and all around service and also a service they provide. They took great care of me when my motor home was under the weather. I was a mechanic for 18+ years and I will NOT deal with carb issues. First off they have WAY too many small parts that my Carrot Fingers will drop, lose or break. Second carburetor work is an art form! The repairs were made in a timely fashion and for the price quoted.. None of that "Oh by the way you also need this, this and that." Some months later I was having an issue and Phil told me to bring it in and if it was something they did he would take care of it for me. Well, it turned out it was NOT something they did but a new problem and it was resolved quickly and for a reasonable price on the SAME day! Carburators have been replaced by fuel injection in new cars and consequently people that actually KNOW how to work on them are few and far between. These guys are your the best! read more

I live 2 blocks away from Bob's and have frequented Primo's for the last 2 years. I thought Bob's Carbs only did "carburetors" (a mechanic's mechanic). But they do so much more... I ended up at Bob's on a whim after deciding I wouldn't bother taking my car to Ford and knowing I DEFINITELY wasn't going to 2 of the nearby local shops after my experiences there. I was honestly afraid of a 3rd strike, but am so glad I gave Bob's a chance! They've earned my trust and therefore my continued business. And at my car's age, there will be continued business... You get honest advice and TIMELY work done at a fair price. This shop will be a pleasant change for you if you're always left wondering whether or not the problem was solved. Or, "Did I really need that part??" And possibly most important to your pocket book and even safety,"WAS IT DONE RIGHT???" These are all questions I've had or have had to experience the unfortunate answers to many times. After I get work done-or should I say REDO work done by others prior-I leave without doubt that it's been done right and as deemed necessary. Bob's is still a family-owned and run business. Bob's son Mitch runs the shop. And there are several great mechanics I met who've worked on my Bronco who didn't mind talking to me about it. If Rich is your mechanic, he's type A about what he does and dedicated. I get the impression that for Rich, taking a vehicle apart and putting it back together is like cleaning a gun and putting it back together-operator style. A huge differentiator from the 2 other local shops I will never go to again is that Bob's will let you know just when you can expect to get your car back. And then they deliver. They might even surprise you and be done early. None of the 10-day runaround I'd experienced recently elsewhere! At this point, I've had several jobs done at Bob's and can't say enough good things about the experience so far. This is rare for me since I'm usually left complaining.
