I experienced his cooking when he was at Village Gourmet, Rutherford NJ. I so missed the bread dipping oil (sold to customers by the pint if desired in the 1990's), homemade chips, and other dishes, that I researched online only to find the business defunct. 2 weels later I decided to try again---that's how much I craved his "spicy sauce" for bread---and looked up who owned Village Gourmet, learned that Bobby Wong did, and that he now operates a Chinese restaurant under his name out of the same Rutherford location!! Who knew? I emailed him and Jae Wong responded explaining that they still sell their dipping oil but it is sold as "spicy sauce" on the menus. My boyfriend and I had a great experience at Bobby wongs for lunch. I got the tangerine beef bowl with white rice and it was really good. Beef was tangy spicy (but not too spicy) and crispy and it came out hot and fast. Appreciate the fact that the beef was not chewy or tough They also add these crispy onions on top of their bowls which is a nice touch. My boyfriend got the Cajun pork cutlet bowl over lo mein. You get to choose your base for the bowls which is nice. The lo mein noodles are thicker than the typical lo mein noodles you see at Chinese takeout, these look more like pho. Either way, I tried a bite and they were great and the flavors were there. My boyfriend also loves their soup and the homemade chips are awesome. In terms of ambiance this is more of a daytime spot. Not too many seats. It's very bright inside maybe because there's a lot of plants in there on the wall. It's still nice, just not that dim nighttime ambiance and there aren't a ton of seats . The food was good here! By far our favorite thing on the menu was the cold ramen noodles. It had a bit of a kick to it, but nothing crazy and delicious peanut sauce. Overall, i really loved Bobby wongs and would come back in a heartbeat. the decor is so cute, pretty fast service, and love the sauces. we grabbed the fried oreo cheesecake won tongs as dessert. these are messy, but a must get! the shrimp buns were nice too. i wish there were more spice. i got the classic spicy chicken original bowl. personally i dont think either sauce was spicy, but i loved the flavor. the chicken reminded me of a chicken katsu. this is easily sharable or spread out between 2 meals. read more

This is one of those things where I'm truly in the middle of the road with. This restaurant just opened in Hawthorne, so we decided to give it a shot. We ordered online and set the time we wanted it delivered and they were pinpoint accurate on their delivery time. Phenomenal job. I got the Taos Mild Chicken with Wok'd rice. I went with mild over the regular because I was told the regular was way too spicy. I may have to try the regular next time because this was not spicy at all. The chicken itself was very good quality. The sauce it had on it reminded me exactly of an orange sauce. I went with the wok'd rice and I'll be honest; I felt it was very bland. I'm talking plain white rice bland. It did have egg and onions mixed in it but the flavor was just not there. Serving size for the cost was very good. Absolutely more than enough for a lunch or even a dinner meal. If it was a dinner meal, I probably would've added the fries/chips. We've been ordering from Bobby Wing's for a year now. The service and food quality is consistently amazing. I'm not sure if they adjusted the spice level of the" original" or if I've just built a tolerance, but it's perfect. The chicken over yellow rice or lo mein are our go to order. The portions are still 2 meals in 1 for an amazing price. My only gripe is that the dessert wontons are hard to eat. They taste stale once you get to that part of the meal because they have cooled. This is a pretty good deal for $9 (plus tax). This chicken is a bit spicy and sweet. I'd have liked for there to be some veggies like broccoli or asparagus. There are a couple of slices of peppers. It's pretty filling for the price but if it increases anytime soon, I'll go to the place across the street (I understand that they're different cuisines but it's still chicken with rice). Place was empty when I went but it may be because they're still new and haven't promoted their official opening (despite doing a soft opening last week). They were also out of a few items so plan accordingly and don't order too late. I'll visit again for sure and see if this is a consistent experience. read more

I will give them a few passes as they just opened but I wasn't impressed. Most notably, as a person who isn't sensitive to spicy food, this food was uncomfortable to eat. They list three levels of sauce but they didn't ask me when I orders so I assumed it would be "Original". This tasted more like it might have been "Fire". The "French Fries" at $4.25 are BBQ flavored potato chips. . The saffron yellow rice seems misplaced. I'll start this review off by saying the employees who work here are extremely friendly, so I feel bad about writing this review. The food here is just lacking in flavor. I read other reviews before placing my order and decided I should probably order the mild chicken since "original" is apparently extremely spicy. Overall, here's the breakdown... * The Portions: great. You get a big bowl with a lot of rice and meat. Definitely an awesome bang for your buck. It's tough to find places that don't break the bank (especially right now). You will DEF not order here and feel short-changed or skimped when it comes to the amount of food you get. * The Cook on the Meat: the meat was cooked/breaded/fried perfectly. No complaints at all. * The Flavor: COMPLETELY lacking. Seriously it's like someone put a sesame chicken flavoring on the chicken but somehow extracted the flavor and left the consistency. I suspect this is because I ordered the mild and assume that the "original" packs more of a punch and flavor altogether (but I'm just assuming). -- final thoughts: if you're going to order here, definitely don't order anything "mild" because trust me, it will leave a LOT to be desired. I'll probably order the original next time so I can give this a completely fair shake but as it stands right now, I'm unimpressed. read more

Everything I had was great, but I've often found that my favorites aren't available. Not great, on a menu that only has 12-16 choices. Staff is pleasant, food is excellent, price is right. I finally tried Bobby Wong's for the first time recently. I got the chicken with white rice. The chicken had a nice kick to it, but it was easy to handle. The rice was cooked PERFECTLY! I know white rice is white rice, but it's so much better when cooked properly and Bobby Wong's nailed it. I called ahead my order and the service was smooth over the phone and super nice in the store. I brought the food home, but the store itself looked really nice and would be fun to sit in with some awesome music playing. My girlfriend and I decided to get some lemonades on the spot and they were made fresh. Fresh is the difference! - so delicious. I highly recommend Bobby Wong's. I'm going back soon! read more

the food is good. i read the reviews before i tried and here is my take. i got the chicken with wok'd rice. chicken is flavorful tangy sweet and a hint of spiciness despite ordering the non mild one. but i did not mind others may. the rice itself is super bland and this is where i think the negative reviews are coming from. being taiwnese im fine with this as our cuisine is like this. however most people who get asian take out is used to pork fried rice. solid 3 stars. read more

This spot is great, small little place in Hawthorne, i wouldn't recommend dining in due to small space, but everything was amazing. The chicken was a little spicy, the wok'd rice reminds me of hibachi fried rice without the soy sauce, but still delicious. NY cheese cake WongTongs were great! The only down side I saw while I was there was the worker in the back was preparing food without gloves on. But other than that this is a must stop and try place.
