Our stay started off beautifully and we were excited for our week-long stay at this beautiful…read morecottage. The weekend was spent with family and we enjoyed a nice bbq in the garden area. There is a pretty big step between the bedroom and the tv room and as I was coming back from the bathroom in the middle of the night, I missed the step and fell forward. Luckily, I was able to land on my feet and not fall into the desk. It could have been so much worse than being stiff and sore from the jolt. I HIGHLY suggest some kind of lighted strip or something to make people aware it is there. When we arrived, tv didn't work and I asked Sandra to show us. It wouldn't even turn on. She realized that she had neglected to plug it back in after painting behind it. She was able to bring up the ROKU. After the weekend, the tv wasn't working and I tried numerous times to input the code and passwords. I gave up and called Sandra. I asked if she was home, and she said she was not. I told her about the problem with the tv and she said she was 70 miles away. I respectfully said that I didn't expect her to come home and asked what I should do. She kept mentioning how busy she was and said she would do a video call with me later. Her next comment really took me aback. Word for word quote: "You know...an air bnb doesn't come with a concierge desk?" What does that mean?! My son was finally able to get it going and I texted her that it was finally working. The tv kept going in and out all week but I didn't feel like listening to her condescending comments and just decided to add it to the review after our stay. Late Tuesday afternoon, I messaged Sandra asking if we were going to be able to use the washer and dryer as I had requested on March 22nd in a message. Her response back was, "Actually, as mentioned in the listing, it is with a few days prior notice as we do so much laundry but I can have it cleared out for you tomorrow." On Tuesday evening, the ANTS came...hundreds of tiny black ants. They were all over the kitchen. Every day, I wiped everything down, but they came back. I decided not to say anything to Sandra because of her attitudes and just made sure everything was tightly wrapped and refrigerated. I know she had to see them as they were all over when we left on Friday. We absolutely loved the cottage, the garden area, the little patio table and chairs just off the front door and just the general, peaceful ambiance.

This was my first experience at a bed and breakfast, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was genuinely blown away. The service, cleanliness, hospitality, and overall attention to detail exceeded every expectation. The rooms were charming, comfortable, and uniquely decorated, while the property itself is beautiful and impeccably maintained. The staff was incredibly friendly, responsive, and always easy to reach by phone or text. The breakfast deserves special recognition. Every meal was homemade, absolutely delicious, and honestly worthy of an award. It was one of the highlights of our stay. The inn also features a gorgeous garden and outdoor space that creates a peaceful, secluded atmosphere while still being conveniently located. State Street's shops and restaurants are within walking distance, and the beach is just a short drive away. As someone who typically prefers staying in upscale hotels, I was initially skeptical, but my girlfriend chose the Cheshire Cat Inn and I'm so glad she did. It offered a much more personal, intimate, and memorable experience than a traditional hotel. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Santa Barbara!

Overall it was a great place.

Jim was there to meet us and show us our room. We got The Cowboy Room on the second floor (no live cowboys included! ) which we selected so that we could have separate beds. The room was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. There were no other guests, so we had the whole floor to ourselves. It was super quiet and peaceful. I imagine it would be different if there was a house full guests. Jim gave us suggestions on things we could do and places to visit. He also gave us the code for the door, the wifi password, and warnings about bears. We opted to walk around the area and enjoyed a fantastic dinner at The Perch restaurant just a few minutes walk down the road. Coffee was available at 8 the next morning, Adriana made breakfast ready by 830am. We had eggs in hash brown cups, sausages, maple scones, toast with a variety of spreads, and fresh orange juice. Everything was delicious. Sorry I didn't take pictures, I was too busy eating! I was able to eat everything on the table. I had mentioned our list of food allergies upon reserving online and also emailed the list closer to the date. The communication was excellent. I would love to stay at Old Bear B n B again. The hot, homemade breakfast prepared by Adriana each morning far exceeded our expectations--so much more than the standard continental breakfast. Every dish was made with care and felt truly special. Both Adriana and Jim were exceptional hosts--warm, welcoming, and incredibly accommodating. They made us feel less like guests in their own home and more like part of their extended family. Their charm and genuine hospitality set this place apart. While a bit of light maintenance could be done in some areas, it's easily overshadowed by the outstanding service and the overall experience. We're so glad this was our first BnB stay--it set the bar high!

When we planned another trip to Santa Barbara this year, there was no question where we wanted to stay--we booked three nights at Simpson House Inn again. I can honestly say our experience was even better than the first time. One of the highlights of our stay was enjoying breakfast each morning in our private garden, surrounded by the relaxing sounds of the fountain and singing birds. It was the perfect way to start the day. Everyone we encountered--from the front office staff to housekeeping--was genuinely kind, professional, and welcoming. There is no nightly happy hour with wine tasting and there are no bikes available to borrow from the inn. Seems that there have been changes potentially in management that have decreased the offerings which make the stay seem less luxurious and in my opinion not consistent with a 5 star stay. When we inquired about borrowing bikes we were told to go rent bikes from a shop downtown. Although breakfast provided was tasty, Simpson House consistently did not pay attention to our dietary requests that we had made note of in our reservation, called in advance to notify the staff, and put daily on our breakfast requests. We were served food and drink that we could not eat daily even after we had brought it up with management. Although the grounds are beautiful, the attentiveness and offerings do not seem to be what they once were, and for the price nightly price of $600, I would look at other hotels in the area.

Parking is nearly right outside the door. I had been afraid that, as a 73-year-old woman not in the best of shape, I would be too far away from the living/dining room and that the steps would be difficult, but it was really only about 60 steps (the length of a hotel hallway) from the room to the main house and there are only about 30 wide short steps. Handrails also provide security in the dark and rain. It was so quiet and peaceful. I felt completely safe and secure. No traffic or airplane noise. No TV! My background was the rain in the oak trees. The breakfasts were perfect and the living room is actually open 24/7 so you can get water and coffee or tea any time.
