Decided to try somewhere new and Board and Batten got such good reviews, we took the drive. While it is about 30 minutes from our house, it was definitely worth the trip. We came for lunch and - wow! So yummy! My husband got the tuna melt and I had the lemon caesar salad. My salad was super fresh and the lemon made it really interesting. Definitely not your average Caesar salad! My husbands sandwich was even better. They use noble bread which is always so fresh and yummy. The tuna salad was the perfect blend of tuna and wasn't drowning in Mayo! I loved it and proceeded to eat half his lunch. . I give this place two thumbs up! read more

Their food is really good but cocktails were lacking in flavor and presentation. With so many cool fun cocktail bars in the valley I would think you'd want your cocktails to stand out and bring people to an area in Mesa where there's not a lot of restaurants. There was a wedding at the venue next door as well as a small wedding at the restaurant that brought a fun vibe. The patio is really cute and perfect for patio season. We ordered the rolls to start, and for dinner the carbonara, gnocchi, porterhouse and branzino. All were very good and had great flavor. Overall we had a good time but the vibes from the staff seemed off all night. The hostess was a little awkward about the wait upon arrival even though we had a reservation. The kitchen was behind assuming due to the wedding they were hosting - we don't mind waiting at all. We ordered drinks at the bar while waiting and then we're seated on the patio. The server was nice but didn't seem confident. He kept asking if we needed more drinks or wanted to order more apps (which is totally fine) but when I actually asked for a second drink he totally forgot about it and never brought it. The overall experience won't have me driving out of my way to visit, unfortunately. I was really hoping for more. read more

All the hostesses are okay but there's a manager that's older and brunette.. She is the rudest person I've ever greeted in a restaurant. I never write bad reviews I'm a very positive person and have thick skin. But this woman was ridiculous. I don't know if she was having a bad day but it was extremely unprofessional and unpleasant. I will not be returning here again. As my family was walking up to the hostess stand the older short lady was extremely rude to my mother and father. ONE hour later we received our food: 2 chicken sandwiches, the pork sandwich, and a salad. 3 tables that were seated after us received their food before us. when finally delivered the manager was "sniity" and said: "Well,, we were backed up today" and abruptly left. If you have even been here, you know why this place is named after an architectural design. This modern bistro is housed in a beautiful building with a large open patio. This hidden gem is a little hard to find as it is located within a neighborhood next to Stonebridge Manor - a wedding venue. The patio area is nice and relaxing and has comfy couches and a couple fire pits. The night we came, there was a wedding going on next door and we got some nice background music. We ordered margaritas as we were waiting for our table and really enjoyed the outdoor atmosphere. Board & Batten doesn't have a huge food menu, but they have a nice selection of pastas, salads, starters and main entrees to choose from. My date and I were both in the mood for pasta and I got the Spaghetti & Meatballs. Super delicious! The pasta is made in-house and the meatballs were pretty good sized. Being a vegetarian, my date really enjoyed her Liguria Corzetti. They make a really good pesto sauce and it is layered on nice round Corzetti pasta. If you are looking for something low key and romantic with delicious food, this is a great spot. read more

We went there to try their Happy Hour and learned after we sat down that there is no Happy Hour anymore. Seems as though they should bring back HH as we were the only ones in the restaurant. Ordered a beer and the carbonara. The carbonara was nothing special but what was notable was that it was an extremely small portion--like very, very,very small. Wouldn't ever go back. read more

When you see a restaurant that has mostly 5 star reviews, pay attention! Reviews can be misleading, or chalked up to personal preference, but this bistro is incredible! For starters, it's in a very tranquil setting: a large, beautiful house set back amongst scenic landscaping. (You can see why it's a great wedding venue.) When the weather cools down it would be great to sit outside. But the food! My husband and I split the Tour de France, which is one half of each of their four featured sandwiches. This allowed for maximum menu sampling. Be forewarned that the menu changes often, so I'm not sure if you found a favorite item how sure you could be of when/if it would return. They feature a different grilled cheese sandwich every day. Mine was like a BLT on focaccia with Swiss cheese. It was by far my favorite. The Chicken Caprese sandwich was pretty good. My husband really loved the Southwestern Chicken Salad sandwich, but thought the ground filet slider was just fair. With this sampler, you got to choose two sides. The mac-n-cheese with roasted garlic was tasty. The seasonal fruit cup was outstanding! This may sound foolish, but the way they cut the fruit made all the difference. They sliced green apple into sticks, and the strawberry, pineapple and cantaloupe were thinly sliced and fanned out. The produce was top quality, and all of the food was so well-prepared. You can't help but feel like this bistro cares about all the little touches. They even bring your bill enclosed in an antique hardcover book. Loved this place, and will definitely return! ***My review above was for when this place was called Bistro a la Mode. They have now built a new restaurant on the adjacent land, and renamed it Board and Batten. The food is still good, and they've added a couple of extra items to the menu. (Like French Dip) One thing that changed is that they're open for dinner too. I think the best part of the new restaurant is what a beautiful job they've done with the decor and ambience. Probably the best somewhat upscale restaurant bar spot in Mesa! Food is OUTSTANDING. We had the pastas, the grilled portabella (so good!), and a house salad which was light but delicious. I really wanted to like this place as it was recommended by a group. Ambiance is good, but if you're looking for a quiet restaurant this isn't the place for you in the summer. I'm sure outdoor seating is great when it's cooler. The waiter was very nice, but a space cadet and the kitchen being backed up didn't help. We waited 45 min for our entrees only to have them deliver a salmon instead of branzino, and one pork entree instead of two. The waiter came by 10-15 min later to check on us, and by that time we had to go to a concert. He finally fessed up and said he only entered 1 pork entree vs. 2, but just added it. We told him that we had to go and he said, "do you want it to go?" Lol. By the time it was all said and done, we paid $150 for 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, (yes, paid for the salmon which wasn't even on the menu), and 3 drinks (3rd one came to us late). We've tried to eat dinner here twice in recent weeks. The first attempt it was at 4:30 pm and the patio was open with a few people scattered around. The hostess told us they weren't serving dinner until 5 so we were "not allowed" to sit at a table. So we promptly left and went somewhere we could sit at a table and enjoy a meal. I would have been totally ok with not being able to order dinner until 5 while being allowed to sit at a table but that wasn't allowed "without permission" according to the hostess. The second time we went back about 2 weeks later and made sure it was after 5pm but they again couldn't seat us at a table, only the bar, because they were short staffed in the kitchen. Why would being at the bar vs a table matter if the kitchen was short staffed? The two times we've actually eaten there the food was simply not up to par, incredibly mediocre at best, regardless of the good reviews it's just not good food and I'm not that picky. The ambiance, which is perfect, and lack of options in the area are the only reasons I've tried to go back there. Apparently though they don't need the business so I won't be making the same mistake again. read more
