I was in need of a oral surgeon for my dog (boxer). He had a rare cyst diagnosed by his local vet. The vet explained that surgery would be needed....ASAP. He suggested an oral surgeon due to the severity of potential jaw damage. After some research of myself, friends and local vet practice I had a number of hospitals with vet oral surgeon's. I had called them all and most of them called me back. But one stood out. It was Blue Pearl. The reason why I went with Blue Pearl was because of my first phone call with Stacy, the vet tech for Dr. Ellen Scherer. Stacy was compassionate, knowledgeable and very easy to speak with. This is very important especially when the unknown is what your facing. Stacy provided details from start to finish...including the surgery, potential cost and severity of the issue. She kept in contact with me up until the day of surgery. That alone exceeding my expectations. I was so pleased with her I canceled all my other consultations. Dr. Ellen Scherer is a vet who specializes in dentistry for animals. She is AMAZING as well. She is very compassionate, knowledgeable and easy to speak with. We brought our old dog in who wasn't breathing well. We dealt with Nikki Friedman the only doctor on staff late night. SHE WAS AWFUL. Terrible, condescending. Would not answer questions well at all, and 20 minutes after we brought our dog in, she told us it's PROBABLY cancer with a big tumor and we may have to put him down in the next 24 hours. We sat and cried and were very depressed for 3 hours until she comes back with the X-rays and says it's not cancer, only trouble breathing... she's a terrible person - DO NOT DEAL WITH HER. Very unprofessional. Next day our dog was transferred to a specialist who helped get him on the right stuff, he's been home for 3-4 weeks now and fine. Five stars seems macabre considering my dog passed at Blue Pearl but i want to acknowledge the superlative staff there, led by Dr. Annunziata this past Saturday. They took excellent care of Lola and advised me candidly but with compassion. We brought our 12 year chihuahua in to have a tumor the size of an orange removed along with his spleen. Everyone that day was great, the facility is amazing, the surgeon, a woman with almost 30 years experience (Dr. Bodzinsky) the spelling is not right but she was awesome. We picked our dog up the following morning. Thankfully, the tumor was benign and he is healing well and will make full recovery. The surgeon called twice, once leaving a message on the pathology results and again calling me to be sure I got her voicemail. Came to this hospital after my dog was severely misdiagnosed by another vet. They were kind, communicative, and informative. The staff showed a true love for animals. A 2 day hospital stay and treatment for our dog was $4,000. I research every hospital in the area when my five year old pomeranian broke her ulna. It happened while we were on vacation in Rehoboth, so we had to travel an hour to get her looked at. They seemed really nice and VERY inexpensive, compared to NJ, but when we got home and took her to Dr. Santiago (East Orange, scary area, but AMAZING Cornell trained doctor), he decided to re-do an x-ray, to compare to the one we emailed him, just to see what was going on. He doesn't do surgery, but told us that the bone would never heal without surgery, because it wasn't even touching the other part of the bone. He gave us a list of surgeons, and I researched ALL of them, reading all of the negative reviews first. I had taken my dog to Oradell Animal Hospital in the past, and we sort of joked about the $3500 "free" granola bars. My original vet in Montclair drove a Ferrari. Oradell just lacked compassion and it seemed a little "factory" like. I called each animal hospital in NJ to ask about the negative reviews, and about the surgeons and the timing (some highly rated surgeons said they couldn't possibly see us for a month, even when we said it was a broken bone emergency - just FYI, broken bones typically HEAL in 6 weeks, so telling us in August their first appointment was at the end of October seemed kind of ridiculous). Blue Pearl just was AMAZING, from the first compassionate person (who only answers the phones) to the surgeon, the financial person and everyone in between. The fund that they have for dogs with an excellent prognosis was really helpful (it was either surgery or being able to eat, since we do not have insurance for our three dogs). We are SO, SO greatful for the assistance they were able to offer us! My (very expensive) little peg-leg is on the mend, and every service they offered to make sure she is healing properly has been extremely reasonably priced ($25 to re-wrap the cast and make sure she is healing well). They are a bit of a distance from my Upper Montclair house, but seriously, they were GREAT! So personal and kind, especially as compared to Oradell, which is a nice crowded, impersonal facility. My surgeon was excellent (I am sure the ones at Oradell are fine, also), but the staff was NOT EVEN CLOSE to the service at Blue Pearl. They really do love the animals, and they care about the people, too. Can't rave about Blue Pearl's ENTIRE TEAM enough! read more

We came here to only get sent to another hospital 1 hr away. All they did Maybe 30 min later, x rays were taken I never saw them, wrapped her up and send her off. If you are looking for top quality veterinary care with a compassionate staff to care for your pet I would strongly recommend that you avoid BluePearl in Paramus. After our 7 year old lab began vomiting up her food,we brought her to BluePearl for bloodwork and an exam. While her ultrasound and x-rays did not indicate cancer, her liver enzymes were dangerously high. We agreed to have her hospitalized for treatment and evaluation at BluePearl. We were contacted by BluePearl less than 19 hours after dropping off our pet. Their doctor informed us that our pet's bloodwork was getting worse. The doctor recommended that we euthanize our pet. Fortunately, my 2 daughters , one an MD and one an RN were on the line with me and directly heard the doctor's medical advice. My daughter, who is an MD, asked the doctor why she was so confident, after less than 24 hours, to put the pet down. She asked if the doctor would consider any alternatives. When pushed, the doctor said they could keep our dog one more day and see if anything changed but she viewed that as low probability ( "less than a 10% chance"). It was VERY clear the doctor wanted us to euthanize our dog. She actually had the gall to say that she needed to be " an advocate for our dog". She made it clear that taking our dog home would be cruel. The dog " won't eat or drink and will be suffering". Thank God, we followed our hearts and our gut feeling. We took our dog to Oradell Animal Hospital. Our vet was amazing. She acknowledged upfront that our pet's liver enzymes were dangerously high. She said it could be a number of things, including chronic hepatitis, which some labs are predisposed to. Her plan was simple; " let's throw everything at it". She put our dog on 3 antibiotics, steroids, liver meds, etc. Two days later she did follow-up bloodwork and the numbers improved dramatically. Thankfully, one month later our dog is doing wonderfully! In retrospect, I never should have gone to BluePearl. I read the online reviews and the overall score and some individual reviews were troubling. It should have been a red flag. The overall BluePearl experience was terrible. The staff , from the doctors and nurses , to the techs, were cold and indifferent. I did share all of my concerns with the administration of BluePearl. They did acknowledge my experience and did adjust my bill by 10%. But ultimately, they stood by their doctor and her advice. One of the benefits of living in North Jersey is that you have choices in veterinary care. With an amazing facility like Oradell Animal Hospital just a few miles away, I STRONGLY SUGGEST that you avoid BluePearl and go to Oradell. The difference in compassion, competence and service is palpable! There's a reason why you may need to wait an hour at Oradell Animal Hospital but that you can walk into BluePearl. It was my first time at Blue Pearl and I was quite impressed. We came to be there because our beloved dog Rusty has had some leg (ACL) issues and previous operations. His issue was now out of our regular vet's scope. She recommended Dr. Monaco and he was awesome... caring, took the time to explain options, and most importantly did not rush to suggest more surgery. Might I add that Blue Pearl was my second orthopedic specialist opinion and I am so glad decided to do so. Highly DON'T recommend the oncology Vet Tech Betty. My pitbull who has bladder cancer was rescued from a bad situation and has major anxiety when she is constrained in the slightest. During our first appointment, Betty was disrespectful, condescending, & repeatedly told me that I have a "bad dog". I am fully aware that my dog is not the easiest to handle when she is anxious however, I also refuse to believe that I have the only anxious dog that walks into their office. Regardless, I gave Betty the benefit of the doubt... maybe she was having a bad day & took it out on me. Well today was my second appointment with Betty and it will be my last. Betty is in the wrong profession & would do better as a Corrections Officer. After assessing my dog in the examination room, Betty dramatically came back into the room dry heaving like she just cycled the Tour de France & proceeded to say "She's really bad. I couldn't do anything so yeah.... I have no problem telling you how it is. You need to give her Trazadone for everything in life". Then gave my DOG a dirty look (lol) and walked out of the room without saying anything else. 1- Why would you give a dog a smug look as if she can understand you? Maybe she was "bad" because she felt Betty's negative energy. 2- Why would you act that way towards my dog in front of me, the owner? That doesn't make me feel safe letting her anywhere near my dog. 3- I think Betty needs a Trazadone to deal with her life. A little compassion goes a long way when your pet is dying. The rest of the staff at Blue Pearl seem nice & one lousy person shouldn't reflect everyone. But if your pet isn't a purebred 1st place winner on the National Dog Show with zero behavioral issues, do yourself a favor & request a different vet tech. read more

If you ever have to take your little member of your family for an emergency visit or just a plain ol' check-up I highly recommend you go to Blue Pearl. We have a very good veterinarian 5 minutes away from our home but I traveled almost 30 minutes to Blue Pearl and when I took the elevator up to the main entrance I was blown away by the cleanliness, prompt reception and even the fact the receptionist remembered me and my emergency. Once they took my little "Shorty" into the exam room I patiently waited. The assistant took all Shorty's information and passed it along to the main veterinarian. She came in and diagnosed the problem as best as she could and gave Shorty some anti inflammatory medicine and instructions as to how we should administer it and we were on our way back home. You owe it to yourself to try out Blue Pearl and see for yourself how clean, spacious, attentive this place is and you definitely won't be disappointed. read more

After my dog got into a scuffle with one of our other dogs and suffered a dislocated hip, our regular vet contacted several nearby vet offices to try and find a specialist who could help her after discovering the problem. When they got to Blue Pearl, they were the first facility that said they could help and although they could not see her that day, we could drop her off that night for pain management until morning or bring her in the next morning for a 7:45 appt. I had to talk over our options with my husband and I called Blue Pearl back to let them know we would bring her in the morning. They had already booked her the appt time just in case plus a surgery spot in case we needed it. All the staff we interacted with were very friendly and helpful, Dr. Bonczynski explained out options very clearly and straightforward, they worked up estimates for multiple options and reviewed them with us. When we decided to have an FHO they took her back right away and just a couple of hours later I received the post surgery call from the Dr. that everything had gone well. We picked her up the next day and her shaved leg was neat and clean, the incision looked wonderful and didn't appear red or anything. Looked like they did a great job. She was up walking around and already starting to use that leg a bit. Other than being in a bit of pain she was basically her normal self. We are a military family, we have seen many man different vets and emergency vets and this was one of the more wonderful experiences we've had. Everything was quick without feeling rushed and I had no doubt about whether or not she was in good hands. Thank you to Dr. Bonczynksi and the surgery staff for taking great care of our baby. I want to add that our dog is a 10 year old Cattle Dog mix with SEVERE anxiety and the fact that she did so well and (at least while I was there) was so well behaved around the staff without being on her anxiety meds says a lot to us. Clean. Nice & Caring Medical Staff. 24/7 care. Sadly, I had to bring my beloved dog, Bosco, here when I was in dire need for 24/7 care. At the recommendation of my veterinarian we became patients of this facility, and I do say we, because as you know, we go through this with them. While Bosco was inpatient I was calling daily, and visiting him in the evenings. They doctors are very busy and not always available when you call, but they do call you back. That's what I really appreciated most. The place really operated like hospital, for pets. I saw doctors racing as they do in the ER with gurneys when a patient comes in. Seeing that reassured me that my Bosco was getting the care and Attention he needed. However, it does come at a cost, but thankfully my insurance covered a nice portion of my medical bills for Bosco. Unfortunately, by the time I got Bosco to Blue Pearl, his condition was advanced, and we decided to bring him home and make him as comfortable in his last days. But when the time came that Bosco let us know he was ready to cross that Rainbow Bridge, we brought him back to Blue Pearl for the final farewell. I'm sorry, I'm getting choked up as I write this...Blue Pearl provides such a beautiful room for that last moment of goodbyes. I do believe that it was a better decision to have the procedure done here in a comfortable and peaceful environment, then if I had chosen to have this done at his vet's office. They returned my beloved in a beautiful wood urn, with his baked paw prints and hair cutting (something I wanted to ask for before I left the facility but was in to much grief to remember). So of course when I saw the hair cutting, I was besides myself in tears in the lobby of Blue Pearl. I am very thankful to all the staff for their efforts. read more

I cannot thank you enough for the experience I had with you last week. On Tuesday, December 29, 2020, my cat, Flower, took a quick turn for the worse, and I knew it was time to say goodbye to her. Flower was almost 17 years old and a huge presence in my life. My girl was extremely special, so I was devastated. Flower was the most caring and loving cat I have ever known. When my mom had cancer, Flower did not leave her side for four years. She would walk step by step up and down the stairs with her and always comfort her. For the last six years, it has just been the two of us. I work from home, and Flower sat by me every day in her chair. She goes to people when they are upset and just was such a gentle yet bossy girl all in one. Bringing her to a strange place was hard, but I left feeling grateful and at peace. The experience you gave her was like hospice for animals. It was so comforting. Every detail of her last few moments leaves me with no regrets, from the staff to the room where we had to say goodbye to her. It was not a cold, clinic like room. It was like being home. You allowed my friend to come in to comfort me. When Flower was wheeled into me on a fluffy bed, with a pillow and blanket- she looked at me like- see, this is how I should always have been brought around. She was relaxed. I knew it was time to say goodbye when she gave me a deep stare as she knew we would not see each other in this world. I knew this look as she gave it to my mom six years ago. Everyone was terrific, and when I tell Blue Pearl's story, people are impressed and happy that Flower was treated with kindness and love in her last moments. Other patients came and were immediately seen. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told hour after hour that someone will come and see me. No one came. They continued to tell me a doctor would see me and my dog but no one came. I finally left and went to another emergency facility. The vet was pleasant and took ample time to speak with me. I have the following complaints: 1- I brought my dog in for bloody stools. I don't understand why they refused to accept a stool sample. They only tested for Parvo (which thankfully was negative). Turns out she has giardia. I had to bring a stool sample to the regular vet after the weekend to find this out. 2- The nurse gave the wrong discharge instructions. Fortunately I had good recall of what the vet had told me. When I asked the nurse how she could make that mistake, she responded that "she has 5 patients". 3- On discharge, they forgot to return the papers I had provided them (medical record, etc), so I had to go back. This is just an inconvenience, but combined with the above, makes me think they were sloppy. read more

Pardon the length of this review, but I can't thank Blue Pearl enough. This is my second encounter them. They are the best emergency hospital around here for canines. Our Havanese-Shiz zou mix, Twizzler, has been diabetic for a couple of years, and is also blind. Last week, and for the first time, his blood glucose levels got way out of control. He went downhill very fast, and in about a day was unable to hold down any food or water, was very unsteady, and disoriented. That night, he crawled off to another room and hid under the bed. We think he was giving up and ready to die. We seriously thought he might not survive, and that was distressing since our other dog passed about 9 months ago. We took Twizzler to our regular vet, who tried some medications. However, Twizzler needed constant care and constant low dose insulin injections. We took him to Blue Pearl, and they immediately examined him and conducted the additional blood work and tests necessary to completely diagnose him. He truly needed intensive care, and that is what Blue Pearl is great at providing. He was treated by an internal medicine specialist, as well nurses trained in intensive care. Up front, they told us how long he might have to stay there, and provided an itemized estimate of the cost. While they are not inexpensive, it is good going in with a idea of what it is all going to cost. They have generous visiting hours, and you can call anytime and in minutes they will put you in communitation with the specific nurse that is handing your dog. Every morning, the doctor called and gave us an update on Twizzler's status. They answered our questions, and never pressured us on taking any particular course of action. The entire staff was courtesous at all times, and were very helpful. It was a long process for him to recover, but he did and he would not still be alive without Blue Pearl's care. I want to start by saying do not come here and that the vet tech Katie is one or the rudest people I have ever encountered and she should not be working with animals. There are so many ER vet practices- please take your beloved pets somewhere that cares about them. I had been here many times over the years for both of my pets and never had a bad experience until tonight and one bad enough that I sit here crying and shaking from how frustrated I am and knowing I will never return here. I brought my pet in because he was having major stomach issues that were very concerning and I did not want to wait all night to have him seen the next day. We ended up waiting about 2 hours and never even ended up seeing a vet. The vet tech, Katie, that came in 2 hours later had the biggest attitude ever. This was the final straw for us trying to patiently wait. She showed such coldness and a lack of any emotion I was not going to ler her bring my pet in the back. Again- this Vet tech', Katie, should not be working anywhere near animals. I have encountered her in previous visits and tried to give her the benefit of the doubt when she had a major attitude and no bedside manor then as well. She previously tried to drag my pet into the back on their leash, had a short temper, and acted as though we were inconveniencing her by asking questions about medications. This visit tonight she mocked my brother and I saying we were "free to leave at any point" and "we could've went to any other vet ER there's plenty of them" as if we didn't choose blue pearl intentionally. She spoke super condescendingly trying to tell us that this is how ER's work with wait times as if we were not aware and had no sympathy whatsoever for our very distressed pet that we had waiting with us the past 2 hours. She could not give us any sort of update on a time frame for our pet to see the vet -even 2 hours in and ai truly cannot emphasize enough times- had one of the worst attitudes I have ever experienced- with human doctors or vets. I cannot say enough times that she should not be working with animals. I am so disgusted and dissapointed. I would never recommend a place with such a lack of consideration and empathy. They truly did not care whatsoever and I worry how that translates into their actual care they provide. The front desk staff also provided little to no information except when I went out and asked multiple times for an update. I am telling everyone I know to avoid this place. I cannot believe the unprofessionalism and lack of care towards the situation. No one apologized or even bothered to try to hear us out. read more

My first call to BluePearl was to get information about having to put my 15.9 year old cat Sugar Lee down. I had the good fortune of having Ayana answer my call. She was so kind and reassuring. It was the complete opposite of another pet emergency hospital in the area that I experienced three years ago. At the time of my first call I wasn't sure if we we're putting her down that night or not and Ayana reassured me that I could just come in whenever. It became apparent that we did have to come in that night. When we got there Ayana addressed us immediately and remembered our conversation. We were asked minimal questions and shown into a room immediately. The room we were in was wonderful. There's a sign on the door saying "do not disturb, family members are saying goodbye. The room is furnished with comfortable furniture and nice, low lighting. As soon as we were in the room the vet tech Melissa came in and explained what would be happening. She too was kind and reassuring. Melissa took Sugar to get her prepped with the catheter and brought our baby back wrapped in a warm blanket. We were offered as much time with Sugar as we wanted but my husband and I needed to just have both Sugar and us put out of our misery. The vet, Dr. Lucia Munoz came in immediately and compassionately explained to us what was to happen. Our time at BluePearl turned an extremely difficult and painful situation into a warm and caring experience. I spoke to our primary vet today to tell him about Sugar's passing. I asked him what emergency veterinary hospitals he referred to and he told me BluePearl was one of the two and I told him to not bother giving out the other place!
