Our elderly cat suddenly lost use of his front leg and we needed to take him for emergency veterinary care on a Sunday. We took him to Blue Pearl in Paramus on the recommendation of our regular vet. We cannot recommend this facility enough. Although, ultimately, we had to make a very difficult decision, we couldn't have asked for a more compassionate and supportive environment. We are so grateful to Dr. Leah for being so loving toward Mimi. Dr. Leah was so thorough in her evaluation and explanations of our options. This place is horrible. I brought my dog in for his elbow( it was swollen to the point he was limping.) they didn't check his ears, take his temperature or exam him. They looked at him and said it was fluid in his leg due to falling hard on his elbows. Well we took him home and he got worse. We take him to our vet on Monday and it a horrible abscess and had to have emergency surgery to draw his leg because there was so much puss and he had a fever of 105. So inclusion, do not use this place they don't want to help ur pet, they just want ur money. And please do not write some bs response to try and look like you care. I'd lost my mom this morning and after dealing with that grief and making final arrangements I went home. When I got home I found my little dog Sofia in distress. Her breathing was labored, drool pooling around her mouth. When we left her at home that morning she was fine, so coming home to this was just devastating. The Vet was kind and understanding and the staff was so caring. As I'm writing this I'm just in tears. It was a difficult choice to make and they made it a little bit easier for me and Sofia. I brought my cat in because she was limping and her usual vet was unavailable. The doctor we saw at Blue Pearl seemed tired and disinterested, and after an exam done without me present said there was no obvious issue, offered xrays which I declined, suggested it might just be a sprain or arthritis, and sent me home with anti-inflammatory meds and a painkiller. My cat continued to limp on and off until I noticed her holding her foot at a strange angle. I got her to her regular vet where they found her claw was growing into her pad and it had become infected. It seems something as basic as an overgrown claw would have been the first thing to rule out, but Blue Pearl didn't even mention it. Not impressed, and won't be going back. read more

Beware, this hospital will try to add unnecessary charges. Mine was a classic case. My vet was closed, so I took my cat in for an infected abscess on her chin. The vet tech was lovely, but I don't like the policy of taking the cat to a back room for examination by the vet. This is the first time I've ever been to a pet ER where I wasn't able to meet the vet and be there for the exam. This is stressful for both pet and owner. They were unable to drain the abscess without sedation, and instead wanted to send out a culture at a cost of over $500. My primary vet told me later that this is more than 4X the normal cost. I opted for a prescription for Clavamox, a broad spectrum antibiotic and Gabapentin for pain. I declined the culture, since it was completely unnecessary. My decision was validated when she was already improved by the second day of antibiotics. BP tried to sell me $37 worth of a probiotic for diarrhea, even though this was a one-off caused by the stress of the drive, and not a chronic problem. We got what we needed in the end, but be prepared to ward off expensive unnecessary procedures.. read more

Dr and staff manipulated my brother by giving options and not being transparent of the situation. they took his last $600 for false hope. I went to Blue Pearl this evening because my regular vet is out on vacation this week due to the holidays, and my elderly cat was very sick. She had been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism only a month ago, but the meds were not working for her - they actually made her sicker, and even an appetite stimulant did not help her enough to gain, much less maintain a healthy weight. In a matter of 24 hrs, she went from semi-unwell, (but still a part of things) to a critical condition to where she laid down on my bed and did not eat, drink, or use her litterboxes at any point the entire day. I knew she was in a bad way when she didn't even protest when I placed her into her carrier. We knew she was in rough shape, yet we held out a tiny shred of hope that maybe she needed antibiotics, or maybe this or that would help, maybe there was some sort of miracle I hadn't yet found through all of my research that could help her turn the corner. Yet there was this nagging feeling that we also were afraid of the worst - sort of that intuition we try and push back in our minds. We went to Blue Pearl on the recommendation of a friend, and were seen so quickly that I didn't even get a chance to complete the intake paperwork. Dr. Murphy explained the situation with great compassion, telling us that she indeed was in a critical state and that anything we would do would only really be a short-term band-aid, and that she likely wouldn't have much more time even if we basically threw everything at the wall, it maybe would buy her only a little time. I think on some level we knew this, and the heart-wrenching decision was made to let my little girl go to the Rainbow Bridge. They gave us all the time we needed with her (even though she was barely hanging on) in a nice room with privacy, letting us know when the time was to be for the vet to come in and administer the shots. This is one of the worst days of my life, yet I felt that this staff had great compassion for us and allowed us the time we needed in those painful moments, and they also let us feel like we were part of the process as much as we needed to be. I held my little girl as she left, and it is one of my greatest hopes to see her again someday. I am writing this to tell the reader that they were really great here, very compassionate, and we had no wait whatsoever. Of course, the price is a bit steep, but this is basically an emergency room - even for humans, an E/R visit is going to be more than a routine visit cost. Although I write this review through tears, I felt it important to share how touched I was by the empathy the staff showed, and how truly compassionate Dr. Murphy was with us and through the process. I highly recommend Blue Pearl to the reader. They are very conveniently located right on Rte. 17. I had no idea they even existed until a friend recommended them to me today when I told her my vet was away and I desperately needed Gracie to get checked out. Thank you to the doctors and staff at Blue Pearl for making this gut-wrenching, heart-breaking moment a little bit easier. My dog Cosmo was in urgent need of a blood transfusion. I went to Oradell Hospital where they quoted me an outrageous amount, I told them I needed to figure out some finances with my husband and the doctor said "if you cannot afford this, the most humane thing you can do is consider euthanasia". I immediately took my dog and brought him to Blue Pearl, where Dr Annunziata gave me a glimmer of hope. She was so professional, kind, extremely caring and really understanding. The moment she started talking to me about Cosmo's situation, it was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. She explained the next steps, which DID NOT include euthanasia. They quoted me a third of the price that I was originally given at Oradell. The staff were so helpful and sweet. Cosmo wasn't even nervous, he trusted the staff (picture below) and spent the night there where he had a successful blood transfusion. He is now home, full of energy. The first time I took my kitty, they did an excellent diagnosis. Since it was during covid, I waited in the car. My second kitty, I will never forgive myself for not insisting that I was not with him. I somewhat knew his problem, but felt I wanted a professional. He stayed overnight, and when I picked him up, he was cold, wet, shivering and very unhappy. He died the next morning. He was constipated, and they said they gave him an enema. I think they perforated his bowel. When they suggested the treatment---cost $11,000.00 I sai just make him well. I had a horrible experience there last month with my cat Trix. They said she had to be euthanized if she wasn't able to breathe without tracheal tube. I understand strange things happens, and perhaps it was her time to go, but communication with the vet was difficult, rushed, and strained. I expressed to her at one point that I didn't want my cat to die alone and agitated in an oxygen tank but I will do what's right/humane to which she responded, "well that's how people died during COVID." (I work in an emergency setting with folks going through traumatic experiences. I am trained on how to handle those situations, so that response is beyond unprofessional.) I ended up with a $10,000 bill over the course of two days without anyone adequately explaining to me what their findings were or even sending me any records whatsoever. There was zero explanation on how it's apparently "normal and fine" for her neck to open up a gaping hole three days after discharge. They put in the discharge papers there were no sutures, but there were sutures randomly hanging days later. I couldn't even get the vet on the phone about this. She collected her $10,000 and was done. I brought Trix to her regular vet and he said the hole in her neck looked really bad. I then spent TWO WEEKS e-mailing Blue Pearl with follow-up questions, demanding answers about what happened, and asking for a partial refund for the additional treatment she would need. I truly did not expect a refund, but I expected them to respond to my questions that were never answered and to apologize for how crass and unprofessional the treating vet was. Radio silence. Then, I wrote a google review. I get a phone call quickly. All the records provided, all the information given to me. Lots of excuses for the vet. I told her I was in animal rescue to which the person on the phone responded, "well I understand when it's your own cat, it's more emotional." I am not emotional. I am calling you out for unacceptable behavior. Do not gaslight me. Somehow no one can see my google review. I know I will never return, have told everyone not to return. I am ready to move on. But I want to be able to tell people publicly - outside my circle - about my ridiculous experience. We are going to pretend it's a "glitch" in the system that my review isn't there because there are other bad reviews up. So, I'll post here and try on google once more. So grateful for BluePearl Paramus, and the amazing care they provided for our cat Sterling! When he suddenly became very ill last month, our local vet's treatment unfortunately didn't provide lasting improvement, and they recommended we take him to a 24/7 hospital. Lots of equipment. Very helpful and professional. They had 11 different vet specialties on call. Took out cloth via endoscope (my vet would have had to cut into his body to remove). They gave in and sedative. Follow up call to see if pet ok Due to Covid, call first. They will call you in car when you show up and take animal in with their leash. Give you call back with what needs to be done. They are bit cheap but they are absolute professionals who care for your pets. Can't recommend enough. They are ones to go to. Great work. V read more

They are not fully staffed on weekends. Expect incredibly long waits and poor communication. We were there for six hours on a Sunday only for their delays to cause my dog to have to undergo a very invasive surgery. It came down to minutes, and those six hours would have been better spent finding a different vet. They need to properly staff their facilities and train their employees to communicate properly. Edit: they clearly don't know how to communicate, as evidenced by their response below. If they have staffing shortages and can't provide care, they should be upfront about that fact. Again, I will never go back to Blue Pearl, and I'm telling everyone I know in the area to avoid it as well. Surgery necessary but time passing drastically lessoned chance of his survival. Surgeon never showed up.... Recommended preventative surgery for reoccurrence not offered even if the Vet had shown up. I would recommend this hospital to other pet owners seeking emergency care. We took our cat Tobi to this emergency room for a second opinion after a terrible experience at another emergency room. We arrived at around 7:30AM, and there was no wait. Our cat was treated and examined by Dr. Annunziata who ran a number of diagnostic tests and later referred us to the neurologist at BluePearl Midtown. One thing I really appreciated about Dr. Annunziata was her clear communication -- she sufficiently emphasized the abnormality of our cat's condition to us and also acknowledged that she was unsure what was causing his symptoms. I appreciated the transparency, and she seemed comprehensive in her approach. Ultimately she helped lead us in the right direction. In general, I felt judged and belittled once I communicated that our dog was on a raw food diet. While I understand that there are pros and cons of all diets, it is a little rude and unprofessional to not fully understand the facts before making blanket "no raw food for any dog at any time" recommendations. We carefully plan out all the ingredients that go into our dog's diet as well as the supplements. This diet has been discussed with our vet, so appreciate the biased judgement, but we will not be following that blanket recommendation. Separately, we felt that everything that was "recommended" in terms of treatment was purely an upsell tactic. After shaming us for feeding our dog raw food, we were told that the vet recommended $2k worth of treatments and lab work for out patient care even though they thought the dog had an ulcer. We were told we could have the same work done at our local vet but it would take MUCH longer to get the results. Alternatively, we could have our dog be treated for in patient care at an undisclosed amount, which I'm sure was tremendous. As a note, we ended up getting the work done at our local vet for less than 1/4 of the price and received the results two days after getting the work done. After this experience, we will not be going back or ever using BluePearl again as we do not need advice from closed minded vets solely trying to upsell us. read more

I'm happy to say I didn't have to have my friends pup stay a long time at BluePearl but if I did have to, I would be comfortable with it. This place is super professional and they really care about your pet. My friend and I came here thinking her dog was in need of surgery right away, they assured us it could wait and told us it would be cost effective to do so because while BluePearl CAN take your pet it right away, it's incredibly expensive. What would've been $5,000 at BP would be $1400 at her normal vet. They stressed this a few times which makes me think they're not all about the money, to be taken right away and have emergency surgery is convenient but it definitely comes with a price. The doctors and staff were friendly, I would definitely recommend this place if you need a vet or an opinion for your pet right away. All professionals were courteous; they took my dog in right away; treated her with kindness and respect; gave me her meds and told me exactly what needed to be done. My sister took our dog to this place, the experience was horrible!!!! They did absolutely nothing for our baby, charged over 1k, on top of that, our baby was in so much pain, barely walking and they brought him down using the stairway instead of the elevator. They do not care for your pet, they only care to empty your pockets. We are taking him to a true and honest vet in the morning!!! UPDATE: I took our fur baby to the vet, he has never had any issues since he loves his doctor, for the first time ever he tried biting him and refused to let the vet near him . BEWARE!!!!! Brought our 3 yr old pup in for not eating or drinking and dry heaving for 2 days. We also explained that he had an increase in trembling and anxiety because of hearing/seeing the traffic on our travel and in the exam room with a large window on Route 17 specifically trucks. They took our pup behind closed doors to examine. Felt he may have injured his back would like to do BW, X-ray to R/O obstruction, Injection for pain and Steroid Injection. We agreed with the BW & x-ray but did not want any pain med or steroid injection until we received results because we did not feel it was an injury. Vet came in to us to discuss results, commented that he was extremely anxious/trembling. Stated again that it was due to the travel and seeing/hearing the traffic on Route 17. This behavior was normal for him. BW results which were all normal except for slight abnormality due to dehydration, shared that the X-ray was unremarkable which led her to believe that his anxiety and excessive trembling was due to an injury to his spine which she stated is very common in his breed. She recommended to give him an injection for pain and steroid injection for inflammation. Although we felt our comments were ignored and Dr was the specialist, we at this point did not want him to be in any further discomfort or dehydration as he is only 15 lbs. Advised us to keep him as calm as possible and medicated for 1 week See our Primary Vet if not better or he seems worse. Vet Tech reviewed discharge instructions advised that he may shake and tremble more because of the side effect of the pain injection. That night our pup was more uncomfortable than before the visit to the vet. Began vomiting and diarrhea and shaking and trembling uncontrollably (similar to withdrawal symptoms). We were literally up the entire night with him trying to comfort him. We were not able to give any medication due to vomiting. Immediately took him to our Primary Vet the next day. We were in agreement that he did not have an injury but a GI issue. He gave him an anti-nausea injection and antibiotic to start the next day. Advised us that he may need another anti-nausea injection the next day if still not eating or drinking. Pup was able to drink some water with vomiting only one time. We took him back the next day and he received another anti-nausea injection and a B12 injection. Later that night he started to be more himself and ate a little bit of chicken and white rice. Pup continued to improve daily. We feel the vet at BluePearl misdiagnosed and improperly medicated with pain medication. He did not present with leg injury, gait abnormality or any other symptom of major trauma to his back. We feel that facility and the false diagnosis led to additional costs to us and this was just a revenue making visit. We also believe the procedure of examining pups behind closed doors enhances your profitability. After a bill of over $1600 from BluePearl, misdiagnosis, & unnecessarily medicated we feel we put our pup in danger bringing him to your facility. After two visits to our primary vet & only $350 the proper diagnosis and appropriate medication today Our pup is doing great and back to normal. Thanks to our primary vet. read more

Be warned, this hospital will GOUGE you when you're at your most emotionally vulnerable moment. This review is not a complaint against the vet staff who were kind and compassionate during our visit, during which we had to put down our cat who was in the final stage of kidney failure. When they have you sign paperwork to select the kind of cremation you would like for your pet, there is no price on the paperwork which is shady to begin with. The last time we had a cat privately cremated in 2021, our regular vet charged us a couple hundred dollars and she came back in an urn with paw print and strand of hair. BluePearl charges you $500 for private cremation fully knowing that when you are heartbroken you will sign anything. I did some research and It does not cost $500 for private cremation in NJ and I know you are going to respond with some bs excuse that blah blah we set our prices fairly, but I have NEVER been gouged like that ever at another vet. DO NOT take your pet here unless you have exhausted all other options or you don't mind being ripped off when you're crying and in mourning. read more

I can't thank the staff enough for all they did . My dog Kriss was not urinating . They quickly did X-rays and found his bladder was full of stones. One stone was wedged in his ureter. He needed emergent surgery. They called Eclipse Animal Hospital in Whippany shared all the reports and a cd disc was given to me. I'm just a little over an hour we were on our way to Whippany . I brought her in to Blue Pearl in Paramus, they took xrays and diagnosed a tarsal medial fracture. ER vet predicted that she may need a partial tarsal arthrodesis. They placed a splint and bandage, then advised me to follow up with the surgical team that same week. I followed up as directed and met with one of the surgeons. As per our consultation, she recommended to treat it medically by keeping her splinted for approximately 8 weeks with WEEKLY bandage changing. I brought her weekly as directed. Long story short, 4 weeks later, I noticed change of behavior such as lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, and a putrid smell coming from her cast. I am a nurse and immediately suspected infection, so I took off the dressing and discovered her infected ROTTEN FOOT. Her last bandage change was 5 DAYS PRIOR, with no report of any skin breakdown or wounds or infection from the staff at all. Side note, when they treat your pet they bring them to the back without you and have you wait in the waiting area or consult room, so you don't witness what they're doing. She had a big open wound on her foot where the splint ends, exposing tendons and bone, the distal toe was hanging, and the foot pad was eroded. In result, her nail bed was removed, sutures were placed, wound care was done daily, pressure wounds developed on many areas of her leg, and she was on several medications including antibiotics and pain meds. The splint couldn't even be placed properly anymore because the pressure sores became so bad. In result, her fracture could not heal properly and aligned due to the complications of the wound that THEY CAUSED. They tried to convince me they are absolutely positive that wound developed in 5 DAYS! Had I not been a nurse or have my entire family in the medical field, they would've gotten away with that lie! They attested on performing skin assessment on each visit, yeah right! They ultimately failed at Cast/Bandaging 101. I am giving 1 star only because one of the managers was very empathetic and tried to work with me the best that she could. The other managers and rest of the staff were at some point insensitive, rude, had an attitude, and/or not knowledgeable about what they're doing. I was going back and forth from home, there, work, there, home again, on a daily basis and my commute was an hour each way. I made sure I was present on each and every visit to witness how they treated her wounds because I wanted to make sure they were doing the correct job, all trust was lost on my end. My baby girl was in AGONY. The mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual strain this experience inflicted on me and my dog was unreal. Not to mention the financial strain with gas and toll, plus they still had the nerve to charge me for certain things. However I refused to pay for any charges related to the wounds. I am posting public not to bash them, but to bring awareness to other pet owners. My dog has suffered unnecessarily because of NEGLIGENCE. We followed doctor's orders and she became SICKER UNDER THEIR CARE. If your pet has any type of injuries, monitor it very carefully no matter where you take them and no matter what the doctors or staff say. Pay attention to your babies and be knowledgable of their conditions. Also very importantly, get documentation of everything! Be your pet's advocate, because they do not have a voice and people in this world are careless or just plain cruel. It's been 6 months since our last good riddance visit to Blue Pearl Paramus, and my baby's leg will never be the same because of them. read more
