Okay, I don't usually write many reviews, so after much thought and reflection, here it goes... The story - I hired Blueline Glass recently to install a shower door, mainly because of the positive reviews on social media. Yes, I got other quotes in the same price range but I wanted to support the local business in the west valley.
However... I was uncomfortable from the start... and should have followed that little voice in my head (intuition) not to use them. The first indication was they refused to identify the product quoted (brand, etc.), source (import, etc.), or even their local supplier. I asked about a product info/spec sheet or a website where I could view the product, but they couldn't or wouldn't provide it.
I just wanted to know where it was made (Asia, China, etc.) as I preferred to use a domestic manufacturer if possible. The only product information I got was a small photo texted to me of the proposed shower door installed in another home. Well... it looked like the kind of shower door that I was looking for... so despite my reservations, I hired them anyway... big mistake, my big bad.
The process - the owner came out and inspected the shower stall and took measurements, etc. and he said everything looked good. So I paid a 50% deposit and the shower door was ordered, which takes a couple weeks. The install day arrived, and he went to work. After a couple hours went by, I went to check on the progress of the work. I noticed the glass was not hanging vertically and the upper support brackets and lower guide were not centered over the shower pan curb. When I asked about it, I was startled by his responses "It didn't come with instructions.." and "It's been awhile since I did one like this...". He also said "I told you it was gonna hang over..." (meaning not centered), which he did NOT tell me that (how could he?) as this was my first time viewing it.
I couldn't believe he was saying these things, like a 10 yo kid caught doing a bad job. This is not a professional taking responsibility for his work. I was taken aback and at a loss of what to do, as the tile had already been drilled out and the brackets installed.
The problem - any experienced tradesman knows to "measure twice (or 3X), and cut once".
All the more important if it did not have any installation directions or guide. Also, there should always be a 'trial fit" and "mock up" of the assembled parts before final installation. If this door product was not a good fit, then he should have stopped immediately so that a more suitable product can be used. He should never have "forced fit" the door installation when it was obvious there was a problem.
It always amazes me that contractors like this underestimate their customers, that they think we don't know anything so they can get away with BS and shoddy work. So, how do I know what is better? What qualifies me to say these things? Well, I have years of hands on experience... and I grew up building things, I am an engineer by education, I spent decades in the construction industry, I have a general contractors license, and I have remodeled homes myself. I am very familiar with the trades, tools, materials, methods, construction specs and processes. I know what quality work is, and this isn't even close.
So, now every day and for many years to come, when I am using the shower, I have to look at the @*#$ up shower door and am cursing the day it was installed. After paying almost $2000 for a bad installation, I think that I and everyone else deserve much better than Blueline Glass! read more
