Steak, fried chicken, macaroni, mashed potatoes, pizza, vegetables, desserts and enough gravy to lubricate industrial machinery. Unfortunately, "everything under one roof" also describes a landfill, and after walking around this buffet, I started appreciating the similarities. The buffet looks like the United Nations of carbohydrates. Pizza establishes diplomatic relations with fried chicken. Macaroni negotiates with mashed potatoes. A taco somehow appears beside meatloaf and banana pudding while one lonely piece of broccoli wonders where its life went wrong. Some trays look fresh. Others look like they've been underneath those heat lamps long enough to qualify for Social Security. I stared at certain items wondering whether I was supposed to eat them or carbon date them. Food should not look like it remembers Blockbuster Video. Then there are the plates. Normally you grab one and eat. Here I found myself holding plates toward the light like I was authenticating a Renaissance painting. Rotate it. Inspect it. Squint. Is that water? Grease? Was that already there? Congratulations, dinner has become CSI: Buffet Unit. Nothing tests my faith in humanity quite like a public buffet. Everybody touches everything. Those serving spoons get more handshakes than a politician during election season. After ten minutes, I stopped seeing utensils and started seeing community property. And then there's the chocolate fountain. In theory, magnificent. In reality, placing an open river of chocolate within reaching distance of the general public requires a level of confidence in humanity I simply don't possess. I don't see dessert. I see evidence. The food itself is an impressive demonstration of materials science. Somehow something can be dry and greasy simultaneously, hot on one side, cold on the other, crispy where it shouldn't be and mysteriously wet where nature intended dryness. That's not cooking. That's forensic science with gravy. Then something psychological happens when adults hear ALL YOU CAN EAT. Plate one is dinner. Plate two is getting your money's worth. Plate three is revenge. By plate four your belt has entered arbitration, your pancreas has retained legal counsel and you're eating bread pudding despite losing sensation below the waist because leaving now would mean Golden Corral won. There's always somebody walking back carrying a plate engineered beyond its manufacturer's structural limits. Fried chicken supporting mashed potatoes supporting macaroni supporting steak with a dinner roll balanced on top like Sir Edmund Hillary just conquered Mount Cholesterol. NASA should recruit these people. Their understanding of load distribution is extraordinary. The atmosphere isn't relaxing either. Plates crashing. Chairs scraping. Kids orbiting the dessert station. Somebody waiting for chicken. Somebody waiting for steak. Somebody standing directly in front of the mashed potatoes contemplating the meaning of existence while twelve people wait behind them. You don't eat at Golden Corral. You deploy there. Eventually I realized exactly what this place reminds me of: Thanksgiving dinner organized by the DMV. Everybody is hungry. Nobody knows where they're supposed to stand. Someone is angry. Someone is confused. Food is everywhere. And eventually everyone just wants to go home. MINUS 1,000 STARS. I arrived hungry and optimistic. I left spiritually older, several pounds heavier and with an immune system that now qualifies for veteran benefits. Would I return? Absolutely. Right after every other restaurant in California closes, DoorDash collapses, my refrigerator catches fire, agriculture ceases to exist and scientists announce that Golden Corral contains humanity's final remaining calories.
