This place is awesommmmmme. They have a barrel of peanuts and you throw the shells on the sticky floor. I watched the Red Sox win the World Series here in 2013, along with an assortment of the neighborhood's crusty old bearded white dude alcoholics and New England transplants going to UW. No food!!!! Very strong whiskey sours and fun decor. The bartender (I think... He was behind the bar but when I asked if he worked there he said "it's hard to say...") did take pity on me for being so hungry and hooked me up with some peanuts and the number for a local pizza place to get delivery. I came here during the blue moon in August-just to be cheeky-only to find out that they don't serve Blue Moon beer. The bartender didn't like that I ordered them, and considering that they had the name first and had a lot of good microbrews on tap I can't blame him. I really liked the atmosphere, the history of the place, and the live music they had that night. read more

Great crappy dive for rock&roll. And the sound guy JJ has a HILARIOUS blog. Lots of great local garage bands, and reasonable drink prices. But seriously guys? Its called bleach. You put it in a bucket with water, and then clean the bathroom with it. Phew! read more

Old school dive bar with great service. The old bench seats are crazy cool. this place is old with a great history, hope it stays open.

I love this place. Haven't failed to visit (at least once) every time I fly to Seattle. Last year, I walked in and received a greeting of confused stares from the old men draped over the bar, followed by whispers of "Larry, there's a GIRL in here. Put on Barry White. now." Larry actually rushed over and did this, which was awesome. Thanks Larry. So you can hang out with old men, go solo in one of the nooks and pick a dusty book off the shelf to read , or just hang back and listen to the readily flowing stories in this place. After experiencing a few days of the Seattle Freeze (five consecutive people in the U district couldn't/wouldn't tell me where the stadium was...), the Blue Moon was a total haven of nice people and a welcoming atmosphere. The bartender is totally adorable, friendly and patient (and is featured in the documentary about this place..check it out if you are curious about the history). Basically, coming here makes me feel like I'm visiting an adored alcoholic grandfather who needs to reupholster his furniture (i.e. it's cozy and i can absolutely forgive the musty pee smell). Although consider yourself warned that grandpa WILL get overly thrilled if the visitors are female. read more

It's a love/hate relationship that I have with the Blue Moon. They offer some of the most unique and entertaining local music acts in the area. The shows are super cheap ($2) and so are the drinks. I have seen some unbelievable things take place here and have heard of some interesting Cold War CIA and KGB trades that allegedly took place in the bar. My first problem is that there isn't any food which is probably good thing considering my second problem is the smell. A part of me wishes that the Blue Moon served nice greasy hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken fingers, and fries to go along with the beer and craziness. The smell turning shows is kind of masked when full or people drinking and rocking out but during the day it is almost unbearable. The Blue Moon does attract interesting people so it is not unlikely to find some college boys shooting pool, some pseudo rockers scowling in the corner, and some vagrant times hang out. The talent booker is a kind man but don't cancel a gig cause he may blog about it in a very public and humiliating way. All in all this place rules. It is a little piece of Seattle history and has an interesting atmosphere. Make sure you check go watch We Wrote the Book on Connectors, A Gun That Shoots Knives, Thee Emergency, The Spinning Whips, or any Sound On The Sound promoted event at the Blue Moon; it may be a life changing experience. read more

I am a musician, and have played here probably 6-7 times. From that perspective, this place sucks. The sound guy is the biggest jerk and has been doing sound here as long as I can remember. The sound is not great. Some of the bartenders are OK, just had a run in with one of them about drink tickets. He was done talking so I walked away and he called me out as rude for walking away.Their lines are dirty and the beer often tastes funny. It is a very divey dive. The only reason bands play here is because they don't really discriminate, because they can't. Chances are, if you are in a Seattle band, your first gig was at the Blue Moon. You will see some good bands here, and some very not good ones. Tonight, there will be many good ones, and I will have fun, and will wish I was playing nearly anywhere else. read more

Went to the Blue Moon last Saturday (04/30/11) to see the Jerry Miller Band. I called the day before to see what time he started and was told 10pm. Knowing it's a small place and knowing that Miller from Moby Grape was a world-class guitar player my wife and I from Burien and another couple who drove in from east Redmond got there at 6:45 to claim a table. We spent considerable cash on beverages and food while sitting through two sets of a thoroughly mediocre opening band with an out of tune guitar and bad harmonies and which started an hour late at 10pm, the time that Miller was supposed to have started. It was 11:15 before Miller was allowed to play so it was a very long night waiting for the headliner. A couple of days later I called to talk to the owner or manager about how frustrating it was to come to hear a world-class musician and be forced to wait for so long to do so. When I explained that I had called and been told Miller was to start at 10pm he said that the person that answered the phone didn't know what she was talking about and that I shouldn't listen to her. That wasn't helpful and I am truly baffled as to how I was to have known that I shouldn't have listened to her. Then he asked me if this was a crank call and that ticked me off. I told him that it certainly wasn't and that we and our friends had driven considerable miles to hear Jerry Miller play and that we resented the shoddy way the evening was handled. I told him how frustrating it was to have to listen to such an amateurish opening band that started way too late and played way too long and his only response was "my wife is in that band". That's nice, but I'm not quite sure what that has to do with my issues. However it certainly does explain why such a low-quality band was allowed to play for so long and so late while making the paying patrons wait to hear the headliner. Simply put the owner/manager was rude, insulting and unresponsive and couldn't have cared less about my issue, which was to not make the paying customers wait until very late to hear the headliner band that they came to hear. He offered nothing but insults and excuses and I assure you that I, my wife and our friends will never set foot in Blue Moon again. By the way, Miller played at a world-class level, was truly awesome and deserved far better treatment. The Blue-Moon may be an historic site, but the way it is run, like the opening band, is amateurish at best. read more
