    Truffle scallion noodle

First time: 5 stars We came for a birthday last year with extended family, and they were nice enough to give us one of the two private rooms. Service was great, food was great, and they gave free desserts for the birthday peeps. Second time: 3.5 stars Not sure what happened but went again recently with a smaller group of 4. Food was mixed-- Highs: Duck breast was so tender and perfectly cooked with delicious sauce and interesting side of grilled brocolli and mandarin. Truffle scallion noodle was their take on cold noodles, so rich with lick your plate good sauce. Middles: ribs pretty good and fork tender. Grilled fish collar was fine, nothing special, didnt like the sauce. Bottom: Sweetfish was super salty, to the point it was almost inedible. Pork lettuce wraps were tasty, but the middle part was not cooked through, to their credit the restaurant remade it for us Parking lot in back is free. Nicely decorated and modern look. Food was not super consistent, but worth checking out if especially if you need a private room

Such a beautifully designed space, but unfortunately poorly executed food. I love the beautifully selected plates and serving dishes. We originally made reservations for DineLA, but had to move it. Luckily the day of, we called to do that, because we would've showed up to a closed restaurant? They said they announced it on their socials, so they didn't need to call those who made reservations, which is quite unprofessional. Although they were honoring DineLA for another week, we weren't available so made reservations for a different week to order à la carte. The braised pork belly was good, but very overpriced for what it was. We decently enjoyed the pork jowl, it was salty if you didn't eat it with the accompanying pickles and lettuce. The truffle cold noodles were actually pleasant; garlicky and a good fusion combination. Popcorn chicken, traditional, but had to send it back, as the chicken had an off putting taste. The duck bun looked pretty, but the bun was hard as a rock and the flavors didn't go well together. The drunken shrimp was underwhelming. You could tell when you peel the shrimp that it's definitely frozen and mealy and $18 for 4pc of frozen shrimp is wild. I love fusion when it's done well, some of their dishes are creative, but it's quite disappointing to see simple Chinese classic charged ridiculously high for a little portion just because they are trying to be "high end." $16 for popcorn chicken, you can get the same amount and better at a boba place for less. We wanted to try the fish collar: not available, clams: not available. Really wanted to love this place, but hopefully things change cause it really is a stunning restaurant. Shout out to our server though, he was kind, attentive, and friendly.

I really wanted to love this place but everything was disappointing and nothing was outstanding. I did, however, enjoy the decor and the staff were awesome. Appetizers - Popcorn Chicken lacked flavor. The crisp was good but it just wasn't flavorful. - Sichuan chilli fries - aside from the general lack in the flavor the chilli oil itself was just meh. Also, top of the cheese was slightly charred (good) but there was still a layer of cold cheese in the middle. - Duck Bao - I was most excited for this - it was not good. The sauce reminded us of the walnut shrimp sauce and it just didn't go well together Mains - Pork Belly - it was tough. I don't know how thats possible but it was tough and dry. - Carbonara - the spaghetti itself was perfectly cooked but it was a tad salty - chicken soap - no notes, this was actually pretty good. I enjoyed it.

Upscale dining experience and vibe, great service, but quite expensive. We booked on Resy for a Saturday 5pm, super easy on yelp but Resy site had everything as unavailable. When we got there, we were the first ones in considering they just opened at 5pm so we got good service and attention. Super nice and patient, checked in on us a few times, refilled the 2 side dishes that we didn't know was an option, and made good menu recommendations. We had the tofu appetizer, duck breast entree, and pork jowl entree. All 3 were delicious with new flavors we've never had before, but we wouldn't spend that much again for 2 people. You go in knowing what you're getting, was a cool experience.

I think that one should try it at least once. There's attempts to bring Asian-centric fusion (think Japanese/western take on Taiwanese food) to our palates. Not all dishes hit but the standout was the truffle chicken sesame cold noodle and the pork scallion "tacos". I'd prefer the beef noodle soup to use fattier cuts of meat instead of what seemed like pieces of porterhouse. I wouldn't mind coming back and trying more dishes. Would prefer that the menu describes the dishes better. Prices were reasonable and service good.

Came by for dinner the other night to try out their new menu. We were served a total of 8 courses and we also did the drink pairing. Presentation wise, everything looked really good. Although I was a little confused on why some dishes were plated off centered. It made me think the dish was missing some parts or something. Their service was really good and attentive. Food was flavorful and portion was pretty generous. I sometimes leave restaurants with tasting menus still hungry but I left feeling pretty content this time. Best part was the price didn't break my wallet! I thought it was pretty affordable even though this restaurant is somewhat upscale. I would recommend coming to try their new menu!

Upscale Taiwanese fusion done right From Shaoxing Wine-Poached Shrimp and Tea-Smoked Duck wrapped in crispy tofu skin to Sour & Spicy Parchment Baked Branzino and a comforting bowl of Braised Beef Wide Noodle Soup, every dish brought a modern twist to flavors we know and love. Favorites? The melt-in-your-mouth Seared Scallop & Chimichurri, Lettuce-Wrapped Salt Pork, and desserts that absolutely stole the show -- Taiwanese Caramel Flan and Truffle Earl Grey Basque Cheesecake Paired it all with the Rum Lemon Tea, Moonlight Bloom, and Winter Melon Highball for the perfect night out If you're looking for a spot that elevates Taiwanese cuisine while staying true to its roots, Blue Magpie deserves a spot on your list

Having grown up enjoying Taiwanese cuisine, this was my first time experiencing an 8-course tasting menu. Each dish beautifully combined Asian flavors with modern culinary techniques. From the Hokkaido scallop and abalone to the tea-smoked duck and dessert, every course reflected the chef's attention to detail and balance of flavors. The carefully curated pairings further elevated the overall dining experience. From the presentation to the service and ambiance, every detail left a lasting impression. Price: $88 for the 8 courses tasting menu (+ $88 for the wine pairing menu) IG: socalhkfoodies

Love the creative fusion menu. The portion size is on the smaller side, and we would recommend an appetizer and an entree as a complete meal. We had the refreshing salmon salad, spicy cold noodles, Taiwanese iconic sesame oil chicken risotto, and BBQ ribs. They all tasted yummy, and you can taste the fresh ingredients in their veggie choice. I would like to try their dinner menu with a few cocktails for our next visit!

I made a reservation for noon to try the restaurant's Dine LA lunch menu, but I was disappointed to learn upon arrival that the Dine LA menu was already "sold out." Considering the restaurant opens at 11:00 a.m., I found it difficult to understand how the menu could be unavailable so early in the day. Still, I decided to give the restaurant a second chance and ordered several dishes from the regular menu. Unfortunately, the experience did not improve much. We started with two cold dishes: the Chilled Chayote Leaves and Shaoxing Drunken Shrimp. Both were noticeably bland and lacked depth of flavor. The Shaoxing Drunken Shrimp was particularly disappointing--it had virtually none of the characteristic Shaoxing wine flavor I was expecting. Having tried similar dishes elsewhere, I've certainly had much better versions. We then ordered the Sour Spicy Branzino, which had an unpleasantly fishy taste, and the Stir-Fried Squid with Five Spice. The squid dish felt more like an appetizer or opening bite than a substantial main course, as it contained considerably more salad than squid. I don't mind paying a premium for a meal when the food delivers on quality, flavor, and execution. Unfortunately, this experience fell short of that standard. Despite giving the restaurant a second chance, the dishes we tried simply didn't leave a strong enough impression to make my list of places I would return to.

    Blue Magpie Milk Tea

Beautifully decorated with cozy lighting and delicious food, Blue Magpie celebrates Taiwan's love for their national bird, the Formosan Blue Magpie! The bird just so happens to be a beautifully bright blue bird, known to bring good luck and prosperity (I looked this up). Thank the spirits that my fiancé planned a breakfast here one weekend afternoon, and I was pleasantly surprised and nearly jumped out of my seat to discover the Blue Magpie Milk Tea is the best milk tea I've ever had. It's deliciously creamy, with orange zest on top, that gives a delightful bright citrus taste that I never knew milk tea needed. By far the absolute best $10 for a milk tea I have ever spent. I know, it's a bit expensive for a milk tea, but hey, you have to try it. Some things are just worth it, and you have to try it to know. Where ya at, Steven, Andrew, and Adam? OK other than their amazing Milk Tea, we also shared a Smoked Duck Salad, Carbonara Noodles, and Smoked Salmon Sandwich. To be honest, all of the dishes we ordered weren't all that 'wow' like the milk tea, but it was enjoyed and we did eat every bite. However, no 'wow' factor in them. I do want to mention their Carbonara Noodles did I believe, use guanciale (cured pork jowl), which is how the real Italian carbonara authentically makes it, so they do not skimp on expensive ingredients here. I think it was honestly our bad for being so basic that day because we didn't order the Taiwanese-specific dishes, which they are known for. Next time, I do want to try their fun dishes like their Boba Pannacotta, fermented rice short ribs, silken porridge, etc. Their menu seems to change and be updated a lot from the other reviews here, so it looks like the chefs here have a lot of fun and get creative, which is great to see! Their service was very accommodating and friendly. Both of their team members spoke both English and Chinese, whichever you are more comfortable with. Also, their bathrooms are beautifully constructed and have such cozy lighting. They really made it a place to relax, wind down, and feel at peace in. I definitely want to come back to try their dinner tasting menu on a date night out. And, I definitely want another taste of their milk tea again! Seriously, the best milk tea I have ever had.

They say third time is the charm. This was definitely the case for last Sunday when I visited Blue Magpie with my family. We were there to celebrate a birthday and booked the private room. Since we had a large party, I got the chance to sample more of their dishes this time. We ordered more than 15 dishes and these were my favorites: 1. Taiwanese braised pork belly with fried eggs and rice - The pork belly was perfectly cooked; tender in texture and flavorful in taste. The rice soaked up the savory and sweet soy sauce. It was so delicious! A must-order. 2. Lobster - Succulent and tasty. Fresh. 3. Taiwanese fried rice noodles - The texture was perfect: not too dry and not oily. Moist and delicious, could use a tad less salt and white pepper. 4. Truffle poached chicken salad - This was a fusion dish done right. The truffles were not overpowering. It was refreshing yet flavorful. 5. Chicken soup - this was almost better than the chicken soup at Ding Tai Fung. It's different and just as good in a different way. 6. Scallion pork with crispy scallion pancake - This dish looked like tacos with the scallion pancake serving as the taco base. We also ordered the coffee short-ribs. Some pieces were dry. The lamb chop with broccolini was good. The duck was pretty good as well. The steamed fish didn't taste fresh. We had several chicken dishes, I liked the three cup chicken dish with mushroom the most. Service was good until they forgot one of our drinks. The presentation was refine. All in all, I do hope they stick around. There were some outstanding dishes.

We sat at a table by the front window facing the main drag. The area definitely has an old town feel with many restaurants and shops up and down the street. There is also a park right across the street. There is plenty of parking around the corner on the street and in a nearby lot. I started out with the Coughlin's Law cocktail (Aviation gin, house infused vanilla syrup, fresh lemon, egg white, lavender bitters, $16). It was a good light drink with light vanilla and lemon flavor. I always love a good foam top too. She started out with a Basil Paloma (Herradura silver tequila, muddled basil & grapefruit, fresh grapefruit juice, lime, simple syrup, seltzer, $15). It had good grapefruit and basil flavor, and was nicely balanced. We ordered the buffalo cauliflower appetizer ($14). The cauliflower was supposed to be grilled, but it seemed almost raw. The buffalo sauce definitely had a good kick. For my entrée, I had the Black Angus Basin Burger (manchego cheese, carmelized onions, arugula, special sauce, brioche bun, $19). The burger was excellent. The cheese, carmelized onions, and arugula was a great flavor combo. The fries were good, but I'd order them more crispy next time. She had the two taco plate with fish and potato tacos ($15). The taco shells were freshly fried, and it was a filling plate that she enjoyed. We had one more round of drinks and I had the Billionaire cocktail (Old Forrester 100 proof bourbon, lemon, house made grenadine, absinthe, $16). This was excellent. It was very balanced, and not boozy at all with a very light sweetness. Her second was the Smoke and Fire (Peloton de la Muerte mezcal, Ancho Reyes liqueur, muddled jalapeno & orange, fresh lime, agave, chili salt, $15). It was pretty well balanced with a medium smokiness. It definitely had a kick of heat on the finish. Our server Lakyn was friendly and provided good service. The menu prices are cash prices. There is an extra 3.5% surcharge if you pay with a credit card. The buffalo cauliflower appetizer was mostly a miss, but everything else was very good so I'm rounding up to five stars. They have a very good sized cocktail and food menu, as well as many beers on tap. They also have happy hour specials. We would definitely return if we were in the area again.
