I work in Lafayette and have frequented Blue Gingko after work with co-workers on several occasions. I love to stroll around the many stores in the Lafayette Plaza Shopping Center. Pete's or Noah's in the morning, pop into McCulla's or Treasure trove for gifts n cards and always in and out of WFoods.Gingko happens to be right in the mix tucked between all of these other places making it. easy to pop in for dinner. Food is typically reliable sushi fare, with choice of sushi bar or nice booth seats to tuck in and enjoy a meal. This last visit to BG I ordered take out 20 min before I left work. I was slowly greeted to be seated and said. "Hello I've placed an order for pick up" Without word, lady turned and walked away. I stood there at the entrance for another 15 min waiting for my order; which was awkward to stand so for long near the door amongst others seated trying to enjoy their meals. I saw another person walk in and quickly raced to the podium in the back and grabbed there bag of takeout. So perhaps this is the place where one is suppose to go for pick up, noted head to the back near the steamy kitchen. Food was brought tied-up in white take out bags without a smile or thank you? It felt odd and like I was burdening them. There were only people at one table and one gent at the sushi bar..hum? Must be busy take out orders I presumed? Today, server Mei Li gave me a severe reaction to gluten. I am celiac and confirmed several times that what I ordered did not have gluten. Then I ate it, realized it had Gluten, and asked again. She gave me gluten and tried to tell me it was my fault. She then said there's no manager for me to follow up with. My father and I asked for the owner's contact info, so she writes two first names (Philly being one of them, even though it seems the owner's name is Phil.) After saying we would contact law enforcement, Mei Li scribbled a phone number. We called, and have yet to hear back. We texted, and have yet to hear back. I am already in so much pain from this reaction. Oh, and they charged us for the rest of our food even though we left right away to get allergy medication. read more

My fiancé and I wanted to give Blue Ginko another shot and so we went there last night to try different dishes. Tonight I had their tempura dinner. Like all places I've had tempura in the Bay Area, none of them do it right. It's always these anemic thin pieces of shrimp and the batter isn't prepared correctly. What it's supposed to looks like is when it's ice bathed and thrown into the fryer, the batter is supposed to splay out. The tempura here in my humble opinion is not prepared the right way. The tempura here was done well, but not perfect. Service was really nice which makes this place a pleasant place to eat. I think I'll stick with the sushi here. read more

Tried to eat here tonight, and chose to leave after unnecessarily long wait and confused service. They seated and then served two same-sized parties ahead of us...no, they didn't forget about us - just were spastic. This is definitely my favorite place to get sushi in Lafayette if not the lamorinda area. While the place is small and the prices are a bit expensive the taste and friendly staff make up for it. Wallace, the main sushi chef is amazing and he takes request. He makes my twin and I a special vegetarian caterpillar roll which is awesome. I also love how they have an assortment of rices, my fav being the coconut ginger rice, yum! I'm a fan the updated decor and the warm colors, very inviting. We love this place! The food is super fresh, especially the sushi, and the staff is friendly and accommodating. The sushi chef has no problem with special requests - though its hard to improve on the Mita Roll - and the non-sushi menu has tasty items I haven't seen on every other Japanese menu. We tend to go for lunch, because its not quite so crowded, and the few times we've thought about having dinner here there were a lot of people waiting, so we didn't stay. Came here for lunch with my boyfriend on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Atmosphere: Blue Gingko was clean, relaxing, and quiet. Food: The food was innovative, tasty, and photogenic (Is that a new requisite now? Not quite, but it doesn't hurt). We ordered the Spider Roll, Volcano Roll, and Agedashi Tofu. They were all delish, and so creative!! The Spider Roll really looked like a spider, taking on the pinchers and creepy spider shape that almost gives you the chills... until you eat it of course. The Volano Roll is topped with cool, delicious tuna that resembles a volcano - Close Encounter fans, anyone?? Service: Our waitress was extremely friendly and prompt, completing the great dining experience. Our miso soup was even on the house. A small but much appreciated gesture. I actually drive out of my way to get the sushi here... One of the best places in the East Bay that i've tried for sushi, and definitely the best in the Lamorinda area. The fish is fresh, the service is friendly, and the restaurant is very cute. Like others have said, service can be a bit scattered but you can tell they are trying to be helpful. The restaurant is small and gets packed quickly but i've never had to wait too long. One reason I CRAVE this place is for the White Dragon Roll (posted a photo so you all can get an idea of what i mean). It was on the Specials menu for a loooooooooooooooong time but now you just have to know about it I guess. It's worth going just for this roll and a nice cup of hot tea. read more

I love the jazzy, calm, and peaceful atmosphere here at Blue Ginko. I absolutely think that this restaurant is adorable because it's just so tiny and everything just fits in perfectly. I usually like to come here with my family and to eat and enjoy ourselves. I always like to order new rolls when I come because I like to try new things. I really love their salmon and chicken teriyaki with a miso soup on occasion. And don't get me wrong on the sashimi! The service here at Blue Ginko is fabulous because everyone here is so friendly, they always treat my family and I so well like we are family and that brings me a lot of joy. I especially like Kelly because she always takes my order and is the friendliest one there. I know that sometimes when they get crowded in there the service may be hard, but Kelly has always been fantastic for us. Wow, this place was kinda good. I'm a recent transplant to Lafayette, and this was the first local restaurant I tried out. First, the good: -The diablo roll! OMG so delicious! For $15, I guess it's worth it. A spicy roll with tempura shrimp and avocado inside, with tuna and tobiko on top. Has spicy mayo and sriracha on top, too. VERY good! -Spicy crunchy yellow tail roll was pretty yummy too. I don't remember what the rolls itself was, but it had chopped-up yellow tail and crunchies on top smothered in spicy mayo. Not quite as good as the diablo roll, but still tasty. -They must make a fortune on take-out sushi. They had so many orders they were boxing up. I was actually really surprised! -They can make substitutions to the rolls. We saw a roll being prepared that looked REALLY good, and they said it was the Mita roll. Normally it has some other type of fish on top, but the customers who ordered it substituted salmon on top instead. I'll have to try it next time! Now, unfortunately, the not so good: -I was a little displeased with the size of the menu. The menu isn't as large as it is at many other sushi restaurants. There are a lot of "standard," find-everywhere types of rolls that I didn't see on theirs. -Like some other reviewers had said, I couldn't believe how many children were there!! Half of the customers were children there with their parents! Holy moley! They were crawling around all over the place. -Their sunomono was pretty different than I've ever had before. Very small, very popular restaurant with good parking and next to a Whole Foods. I particularly love their hand rolled salmon skin, grilled calamari, and grilled eel. The eel is 2 big pieces per order. My hubby loves the hamachi here. Our friend ordered a small tempura which was a nice portion. The batter was nice & fluffy, not greasy at all. You'll pay about 20% more for portion sizes that are at least 20% smaller than other places. The cuts on the sashimi are all wrong and WHY IS THERE LEMOM on a sashimi platter. It ruined the fish. $20 for a small "pitcher" of sake. We spent $150 on a meal for two adults and a child and went to the store for more food. We won't be back. read more

One of the best Japanese restaurants I've been to yet. Everything we ate was flavorful, fresh and adequately portioned, but the star of the show here is the coconut ginger rice. I could've eaten that on its own, it was so good! There is an upcharge for it, but trust me when I say it is totally worth it! This restaurant is incredibly small and on busy nights it is almost impossible to get a seat and it gets noisy and cramped very quickly. You will be sitting very close to other patrons and if you have little kids it isn't really kid friendly due to the small size of the building. The bathroom is in another part of the strip mall, a bit of a way from the restaurant itself and you need a key to get in. read more

If the sushi was the only thing I was giving a review on, I would give 5 stars. I am a sashimi eater and the fish is always fresh (this is why I eat here), at the right temperature, and the chef is always consistent with his presentations. The experience is definitely every bit of what the negative reviews say the waitstaff are...don't underestimate their advice. I have been coming here because it is my home town and the sashimi is good. First of all, I don't know if Mel from Clayton is actually eating at the same restaurant. This place is not upscale or more upscale by any stretch of the imagination. You can come in wearing t-shirt, shorts and flip flops. If you eat out doors, I seriously think you would be forgotten about completely and service would probably be next to impossible to receive. The service is CONSISTENTLY HORRIBLE. I read the other review where they mention the staff is racist. I don't know if that is true, because one thing I have always noticed is that the 'regular's' are always acknowledged immediately. Though, I can honestly say I dread the service here. Eating sushi is supposed to be an 'experience'. You should get your appetizers one at a time...not everything dumped on your table at once (happens here)...including your sushi. The waistaff here are SO SO rude. They rush you in and they have no time or interest in listening to you and if you are indecisive or have questions you are looked at in disdain....ALWAYS. The waitstaff always forgets something: refill your tea, bring water, replace a napkin, offer more beer or sake, side of rice, whatever, mark my words this staff SUCKS!!!! The only moment you will feel treated with a little respect is when that bill is ready to be paid and they are waiting for their special tip. God forbid you don't understand what they are saying because of the asian accent, you will be treated like you are an idiot because you don't understand them. I LOVE the sashimi and hate the waistaff. One more thing. Don't go here is you want privacy or a romantic evening. You are treated like herded cattle...in/out. The tables are so close together; people who lack interesting conversation will eavesdrop on yours. If you have a low tolerance for cramped spaces and loud conversations and terrible terrible service, you honestly don't want to come here. People giving 5 stars are not accurately scoring this restaurant. 5 stars should reflect a place that lacks nothing more to be desired because they are top notch. This place is SOOOO FAR FROM IT. If you get appetizers, sushi, and dessert, plus drinks, expect to pay about $40 per person.(with tip)..not cheap! For $40 per person you should be treated with respect, be given top notch service. Excuse me to the other yelper, but the staff here are NOT treated like slaves, they are in the service industry...there job is 'to serve' and to serve efficiently at $40 per person. Tonight, Blue Gingko, you have surely earned your spot of real estate in the culinary wasteland that is, sadly, Lafayette. I have sworn off Blue Gingko a number of times and went tonight at youngest son's request to have his birthday dinner there. There were two waitresses working this evening and we somehow drew the short straw and got the grumpy one. Restaurant was fairly empty and I mentioned the special birthday occasion. She said they don't do anything but would bring a bowl of ice cream. Will get to that later. Oldest son ordered a custom roll very simple- spicy tuna with the orange mayo sauce on top and crunchies. What he got was spicy tuna with cucumber and lettuce inside and the mayo/crunchies on the side. After pulling the extras out of two pieces and having not much left of the roll, I mentioned to our waitress it wasn't made the way it was ordered. That conversation went something like this: Waitress: "All our spicy tuna has cucumber and lettuce." Me: "I have the honey spicy tuna roll and there is only tuna in it. We ordered the spicy tuna only." Waitress (insert dramatic pause): "Want me to ask the chef to fix it?" Me: "That would be lovely, thanks." Sushi chef basically says tough luck, sends the incorrect roll back AND we are charged 9.95+.50 for the "custom" order. Seriously? Am I in sushi Twilight Zone? Who does that? Not to mention the tuna after all that had a bit off taste and the roll was hence forth shunned. We had two salads which were fine but you've really got to try hard to mess up a salad with greens and a few tomatoes in it. Pork Katsu which is what youngest wanted to go there to have was just okay. Has been better in the past but frankly would gladly take L&L BBQ Tonkatsu over this at less then half the price. And shame on you, Blue Gingko, for charging $15.95 for a plate of Katsu and not including a side (that's $6.95 extra for small!) salad. And the ice cream? Anyone? Bueller? Of course it was never brought to the table. Grand total for completely sub par dining experience: $118. "Oh wait!" you say "there must have been drinks involved!" Yes, yes dear reader there were- 3 Japanese soda's. Much like an Amazon book review, proceed with caution regarding 4 and 5 star reviews. I had some friends in from out of town, they are from Oregon (so you know what that means!!!). Yes, I needed to find a pescatarian restaurant to satisfy their fruit and nut type hunger pangs. The Gink fit the bill. I had the garden salad with creamy sesame dressing (very good) and the grilled calamari. I don't know what my guests had, though, they said afterwards (while having dessert at Metro) that they really enjoyed their meal. I suppose it was the sake that distracted me from their meals, who knows. Very fresh, very tasty, not very crowded and reasonably priced. Very different picture from the many other times we've walked by. Usually packed. Sit down. Server comes by to ask us if we'd like a beverage first. Order tea (for me) and a large beer (for him). She proceeds to hang by her server terminal and talk with the sushi guy. 8:20pm. No bevs. 8:25pm. Waitress comes by to take our order. 2 rolls, miso, and an order of toro. No bevs. 8:30pm. Spot our rolls and toro hanging on top of the yoshizaki fish fridge. Maybe not ours?? Funny that someone else ordered the exact same thing! Spot our server pouring water into her tea dispenser. So...we call her over. "Can we have our drinks?" "Oh yes." We finally get our drinks. One ice water and a small coke. WHAT? So we re-order our drinks. Remember this. 8:32pm. Hubs is pissed that the fish is collecting dust so he gets up and goes over to the sushi bar and says, "can I take this? this is ours, right?" The sushi chef says, "no no...she'll bring it right over" Okay...... 8:35pm. Server brings us our sushi. I ask for miso. She snaps, "It's coming! Next time, wait, I will bring it all over for you. MY job!" 8:40pm Brings miso which I'm sure is laced with snot, toe jam and whatever else tastes like server spite. "Um, can we have some soy sauce?" I hear sighing. 8:45pm. We eat our meal. ask for the check. 8:46pm. Quick service on that! She brings it to us, charges us for the coke, the beer, the tea. Even though the soda was her mistake and she took it back. We will never go back. We stayed as long as we did because it came highly recommended by several people, we were hungrier than anything and we hoped that it will slowly redeem itself but it didn't. The waitress had just about the same personality as a box of wet hair...however the food was decent...when we finally got it. Tiny place with no ambiance or customer service. Food is mediocre at best and over-priced. Service is slow and staff is indifferent. A big zero on my books if the service is poor. I can buy fresh sushi grade sashimi at Berkeley Bowl and prepare a Japanese meal at home, so why bother dining at a place where the staff is not friendly and the quarters cramped. Tried it once for lunch and would never even attempt to eat dinner there . Why pay that kind of price and be subject to their rudeness? As we continue to exhaust our dinning-out options in Lafayette, we inevitably came across Blue Ginko. Lured in by rave reviews and the fact that it's crowded every time we drive past... we decided one Friday night to see what it's all about. Seating is tight, it's definitely not a large restaurant. You probably would hit the max. occupancy with about 30 people. Staff were nice and friendly, ice cold sake was delish and served in a very cool bottle, but presentation and authenticity of our meal lacked a bit. Ambiance was equivalent to a glammed up PTA gathering. Considering that we are recent transplants with no kids, we were the only 2 people in the restaurant that didn't know anybody. I started out enjoying the comradery...for the first 5 minutes. Then I started to get annoyed as everyone was saying hi and yelling to each other about little league games OVER our table. I couldn't even hear myself drink my sake!! ;) Hahaha. Come ON people!! Perhaps 10 to 12 years down the line this place will fit us juuuust right... So expect a review in 2022, when I'm a soccer-mom running around 3 kids deep! P.s. Don't hold your breath. read more

I've eaten at Blue Gingko many times. Have always had good food. The last couple times we've gone though, food has been a bit disappointing and the service not great. Tonight we had another disappointing experience so unlikely we'll go back. VERY slow service - we had no chopsticks and had to wait nearly 10 minutes for chopsticks after our salad arrived, had to wait for a long time to pay our check as well despite there only being 2 other tables with people. The teriyaki chicken was horrible - tasted like the chicken had freezer burn - very tough and no flavor. The sushi I ordered was marginal at best. Time to look elsewhere. read more

Not great if you aren't having sushi. Sushi chefs are the only reason there are any stars.. Their non-sushi choices for the most part are extremely weak. I have tried their katsu a handful of times hoping it may get better and it is always thick and gamey without panko. Once I got a bowl of katsu that just looked like scraps from other people's uneaten katsu. KFC or Wendy's has more flavor and freshness. Why does this place have such less reviews on yelp pretty surprised? This place is just amazing we always make it a point to make our guests dine here. I just love the way they have done up the restaurant. Beautiful interiors with lavish wood work and well lit. As soon as you enter the restaurant it gives a very warm and welcoming feeling. The bar area also looks quite contemporary and sophisticated. They offer a variety of white and red wines. They also have some Asian inspired cocktails. They also have an outside sitting area with lots of plants which is also quite good although they don't have many chairs and lot of the times it's full. The one stop place if you want to enjoy some authentic Japanese food in Lafayette. I have eaten almost all the dishes from sushi rolls to fish and chicken and highly recommend this place for a night out. They have dinner, lunch combinations and sushi combinations that you can choose. My personal favorites in sushi rolls are crouching tiger which is soft shell crab, tempura shrimp and Hawaiian rolls. All in all good food, good ambiance, good cocktails and good service a must place to visit if you are in Lafayette. I would always give this place 4 stars out of 5. I think this place is the BEST sushi I have ever had. I live in Berkeley and religiously travel over 20 min. just to get a Mita Roll, some Himachi and a creation of the chefs discretion. They are fantastic...TOP of the line quality and consistency, with out a doubt my favorite sushi restaurant ever. P.S In response to people complaining about the service: the waitresses (one of who is a owner) are not rude, just don't treat them like they are your slaves or they don't speak English and they are fine. If you don't like the service, you can always sit at the bar and order with the sushi chef, who is darling. I've seen how some people are to servers there, and I would be annoyed too! It's no an appropriate place to take a baby who needs a high chair, due to the size and how packed it gets on the weekend. read more
