Bistro Martello - A happy discovery...

The Martello is a charming little bistro - the sort you really wish was within staggering distance of your own front door, sadly for us it would be a considerable stagger - some 10 miles - and there is no amount of alcohol of an eve that will keep me going that long. Inside it is perhaps a bit dark during the day but in the evening you don't notice this. The cuisine is European I guess; I can't nail it down any more than that. They do Seafood - glory be, a seaside restaurant that knows what a fish is! - this is a favourite rant of mine, not half enough fish places about... The menu is a set affair for 25Euro pp for a 3 course meal but splash out and pay the supplement of 4.50Eur and get the Dublin Bay Prawns, worth every cent. The Mediterranean Seafood stew is likewise worth a shot, lovely with a bottle of good dry white wine!

The kiwi had a steak, which was one of the most perfectly cooked steaks I have ever had. The service was perfect and lovely. They even remembered we had to be out of there by a certain time to make a show, so the food was prompt and beautiful. Add to that the fabulous gay couple sitting next to us, who were lovely, chatty, and told my bf how fabulous his outfit was. It was like home.

Really good and the portions are great, neither too big or small. which is nice. I guess my issue is the service.... more importantly servers. While the guy I assume is Harry, is fantabulously brilliant the other servers are..... lacking. First there is the guy today who talked about his vacation to Poland, where he drank so much vodka (which is apparently miles better than the stuff here in Ireland) he was sure it was 24 hrs straight, while I patiently waited for my menu. Now, I am proud of him. I would have died from alcohol poisoning if I drank vodka for 24 straight hrs. However, I am not really sure the doorway of your place of employment is really the place to have said conversation, because I was far less offended when he retold the story to a table full of regulars. Seriously, I was. No clue that was about, but moving on. Second there is the too cute for words little boy (in all honesty he is probably in his early 20's, I am just old) who always looks like God pooped in his cornflakes. Every time I see him I want to ask him if it is really so hard to look as if he completely hates his life. I mean even a look of total boredom would be better than the "I may have to go to my room and listen to Morrisey after this because misery loves company" look he ALWAYS has. However, since the food is good, the coffee decent and the proximity to my gaff is ideal I will continue to frequent this place and endure angsty little boys and oversharing on the drunken front.

The spot is located up a literal winding staircase that takes you into an inviting room that boasts a lovely view of the river below. We didn't go to the third floor, but I can imagine it was equally lovely. They've got an impressive wine list and a moderate beer list that's predominantly bottle. Interestingly they don't have spirits so the mixed drinks are wine cocktails - boss! I tried a white port and tonic drink - seriously next level! I don't often find wine cocktails and even more rarely are they really good! The menu is impressive and seasonal, save the potted crab and haddock, which are on all the time. It should be know for any who dine with our crew, that we share a lot, so everything we had was enjoyed by all 5 of us. The crab was unbelievable! Creamy, flavorful, magical. The beef cheek and fish plate were also perfect for sharing. We also had two scotch eggs - these could have a Klondike bar (look it up youngins!) like marketing campaign! We shared the Haddock and the Pigs on Green Port Tenderloin. Both were awesome, with the Haddock more memorable. We haven't had such delicious mashed fish since Iceland and the cheddar mash and onions were the perfect accoutrement! The chocolate fondant was delicious and the bread and butter bread pudding was life changing. The whiskey sauce is something I'd swim in if given the chance! It was lick the plate good. The service was spot on and we got out of there for about €50 a person, full and happy! The whole evening was excellent and this place definitely deserves the accolades. If you're in the area, you should check it out!

This is evident by the name drop of some producers in each dish. My family was able to try a scotch egg for the first time, some beef cheek, crab and a charcuterie board with meats from Cork. Even the beers we ordered were local as well, mine from the Waterford area. Our server walked us through this experience with ease and we all couldn't be happier with our time here, especially for a Sunday afternoon when it could have been a lot louder and chaotic.

Like I said, their food is great, their customer service is also very good. I just wish they had take-away. With COVID and omicron, you would think they would accommodate it for the safety of their customers, but they seem offended when I call and ask for takeaway. However, I definitely recommend this place, it's a true gem in the neighborhood. They are reasonably priced for lunch (€17 for 2 courses or €20 for 3 courses), they also have other options. They also have an early bird menu for (€24 for 2 courses and €28 for 3). And a la carte for dinner. They have lamb on their Sunday menu.

The food is consistently delicious and well priced. Their Tue. Steak Dinner nights are extra special, not just for the price but also the food. I am not a huge meat eater but the preparation of the steak is worth the visit. And what can I say about their cocktails. My favorite being the Margarita which the Manager makes the best. The staff are welcoming and very professional and attentive. I would highly recommend this restaurant to my friends and visitors alike for a quiet dinner or to celebrate a special occasion. The ambience is trad Irish at bar with a very modern menu. The staff are really friendly and helpful. Roisin greeted us at the door and was super helpful making out choices for dinner. Though the patrons are packed in, the sound level was comfortable for conversation and tucked in the corner we had more room than most anyone else. The food was superb. There a Cajun influence to the chef's palate. The seafood chowder is a red chowder, a little spicy, and light. It's of course chock full of fish. The corn bread served with the soup is unique. I asked and the chef flavors the bread with Cajun spices. It's excellent. My wife chose the goats cheese salad. The pastry they held the salad and cheese was so delicate. Our entrees included the beef that melted in your mouth. It's served rare and it's totally tender. The sea bass was also excellent. It's served of the bone with mussels, brocholini in a curry based sauce. It was a very generous portion. The potatoes served with the dishes were great. My wife had a tawny port and I chose the cider-see pic. It was delicious and refreshing. We didn't enjoy dessert and so I can't comment. I highly recommend this place!
