We planned on an Italian lunch today for a special occasion but Villa di Roma was not opened, as it turned out when we walked there from our home five blocks away. We next tried Ralph's, but according to the website, it wasn't open for lunch today, either. So we decided to try Mexican, because the restaurant was open for lunch (even though my wife and I had a delicious Cinco de Mayo meal at Mole Poblano just a few days previously for less than $40. which included complimentary margaritas and a complimentary platter of corn chips, black bean sauce and queso fresca and salsas).
So we decided to give Blue Corn another shot. We would just try different things than we ordered last Friday. Easy, right?
This spot, Blue Corn on South 9th Street has very good food ... but one of the waiters (the oldest-looking heavyset one, name unknown) definitely needs to work on his people skills. Three people were perusing menus for a special birthday lunch for my younger sister when she asked the waiter for a replacement menu because at first glance her copy didn't seem to have the center pages in it. This waiter told her the menu was okay and showed her that it was indeed intact. The plastic sleeves which held the printed sheets were just stuck together, apparently; a suggestion which she brought up to him and to which he simply ignored, leaving her feeling - and looking - just a little bit silly. My sister then enquired about a listed dish as she was unfamiliar with the restaurant and its offerings. She merely asked what it contained, and he listed the items and concluded by naming a particular sauce. I hadn't heard of this sauce before, so I asked him what it was. He replied by spelling it out, as if that would provide the answer. I said okay, now we know how to spell it ...but what is in it ? and he merely repeated its name. Unhelpful.
I had a question about the menu as well, namely, in the section on sopas and appetizers. The first sopa (soup) was a chicken based soup and it said 'soup' in the description. Fine. The third listing in the section also had 'soup' in its description. Wonderful. But the second item on the printed version of the menu, however, made no mention of it being a soup, just listing its ingredients. Now, personally, I really like tortilla soup and when I see it listed, I generally order it, everywhere, but this item did not say 'soup' in the description. So I asked him if it was indeed a soup, as the rest of that section was not soup, but appetizers. I wanted to make sure it was tortilla soup and not a tortilla salad or tortilla appetizer or something else. He replied by knocking a full glass of ice water over onto the table top with his thick hand or elbow, soaking the table (and part of my shirt). He never apologized so I can only conclude it was done on purpose.
We moved to another table -- a dry one, and a different waiter: a helpful one. I said to my fellow diners, make sure you don't have any more questions about the menu. They don't seem to like that.
Our meal was really great. We had the tasty guacamole salad and blue corn chips, the very good tomato-based tortilla soup (a version which I had never had before), a delicious chicken tostada dish for my wife, a very generously portioned chicken burrito platter for my sister, and an order of three beef cheek tacos for myself. In addition we had a round of three different Mexican beers, a special Mexican blended coffee for the birthday girl, and two warm lava cakes with strawberry ice cream and diced apple to share among us. Lunch for three came to $106, with tax and we added a twenty dollar tip for our server, to whom I said to be sure not to share with the surly fat guy.
Next time I crave Mexican I will make a bee-line back to Mole Poblano, however. You can BYOB at Mole, but not at Blue Corn.
