Mexican food in the very heart of Philly - bonus points for the photobooth! First and foremost, our waiter was wonderful and I wish I could remember his name. The menu here is expensive and has plenty of vegetarian options which I appreciate appreciated. They make a very good classic margarita, so be sure to order one as your drink of choice. The nachos are pretty good, but I will say the star of the show was actually the sides for me: the brussels sprouts, plantains, and equites - fabulous! I ordered the cauliflower tacos as my main dish, but it was a little bit disappointed in these, they could've used a little bit more flavor. read more

Food: steak tacos were splendid. Queso is 10/10. Brussels were so Smokey and spicy and delicious. Definitely will order again. Basic guac and chips were good. Drinks: tried the regular margaritas, pink Cadillac and pomegranate. Fave was the pink Cadillac with a Tajin rim. Service: Server was amazing! You definitely come here for the ambience though. Cute decorations, large table booths, outdoor tables, cute central bar, and the VINTAGE PHOTOBOOTH. To top it off, our waitress was incredibly knowledgeable about gluten free and was able to let us know what items on the menu either were or could be made gluten free. They fry all their chips first thing in the morning so no cross contamination. Yes! I would drive to Philly just to eat here again! We sat outside which was lovely as it was a bit loud inside. Visited this week after not having been here for a few years, and I'm happy to say the experience was pretty much the same -- in a good way. Except for the chips. What happened to them? They used to be my favorite: fresh, warm, perfectly crunchy with just a little chew. This time, they were so hard they actually hurt my teeth and tasted stale, almost like they had been fried the day before and reheated. Please fix the chips and go back to the old way. Popped in as a walk in group of 3 and fortunately we were able to sit immediately. We tried the Queso Fundido w/ Carne plus I subbed the tortillas for tortilla chips, and I asked for a side of their habanero sauce (not spicy, imo). No awkward craning for a view, no fighting for the one good seat, just a very solid setup for a group outing. I checked in with the host with my date twenty minutes prior to our reservation time and they said our table would be ready closer to the reservation time. We got a drink at Woody's down the street while we waited and then they texted us that our table was ready. Talk about efficient use of technology! That was great. The hosts were agreeable and efficient and calm and our table was perfect. Meant for four but two plates were taken away so it was perfect for just us two. Our server was a handsome young man with a sweet smile and he had perfect table timing, dining etiquette and personal skills. I ordered the things he recommended and was not disappointed. My wife, our two-year-old daughter, and I visited El Vez this past Friday evening, and we had a fantastic experience. As devout fans of Stephen Starr's restaurants, we've been to many of his other spots but, for some reason, had never made it to El Vez. We live closer to El Rey (another favorite of ours), which might explain why we hadn't ventured to the other side of Broad until now. After this visit, we can confidently say we'll be back--and we're already planning to bring my parents, who love Mexican food, on their next trip to Philly. We arrived around 5:20 PM without a reservation, and despite the restaurant being packed, the hostess was incredibly kind, helpful, and welcoming. We were seated quickly, a pleasant surprise given the busy atmosphere. The space was much larger than I expected, with a great vibe and much energy. The central bar, complete with a lowrider bike on display, adds a unique touch, and the windows along the perimeter flood the room with natural light, which we appreciated. The food was outstanding. We started with chips and guacamole, which were perfectly done. The Caesar salad was excellent. For our main courses, my wife had the steak tacos, and I opted for the taco sampler. We also shared a side of street corn. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. We definitely overordered, but that's on us! Next time, we'll be more strategic, though every bite was worth it. We didn't try the margaritas this time, but they're on my list for our next visit. The service was another highlight--our server was kind, attentive, and approachable, striking a great balance between being helpful and allowing us to enjoy our meal. Overall, El Vez has a lively, welcoming atmosphere, excellent food, and great service. It's a perfect spot for a group meal or a casual family night out. El Vez is another Stephen Starr restaurant. This means sexy lighting, cool decor, and music playing at a perfect volume. I enjoy all these things about Stephen Starr restaurants. What I dislike, and El Vez is no exception, is the focus on ambiance over food. Yes, I go out to eat for the atmosphere and to be with friends. But I mainly go out to eat for the food. While the focus on ambiance detracts from the food quality, El Vez manages the simple dishes well. Guacamole was good, nachos - good, cornbread - just fine. If you go for anything entree-oriented, brace yourself for some disappointment. My personal poor experience was with the hongos huarache. Marketed as a mushroom flatbread, the hongos huarache was brought to my table and looked like a pile of mushrooms in a pool of brown sauce topped with another pile of pickled slaw. The actual "flatbread" was buried underneath all of the toppings. I could not tell if the dough was soggy from the sopping-wet buttered mushrooms or the sour, obviously days old, brown sauce (which I learned was supposed to be salsa verde although, let me assure you, there was nothing verde about it except for its past life). I actually ate several bites of this rotting heap of leftovers before I couldn't even look at it anymore. I told the server. My disappoint was acknowledged. But I was never apologized to or given any compensation for the poor food experience. Bottom line: if you want guacamole, margaritas, and cool atmosphere while you're in the area, go ahead and stop in. But if you want a meal, there are loads of other Mexican restaurants in Philadelphia, most of which have quality guacamole and margaritas, a more authentic atmosphere, and better food. read more

El Vez came in highly recommended by friends, given that we're new to town. We got takeout here on a Friday night, and maybe it's because I ordered the wrong thing or they messed up my order... We ordered the Tito Santana guacamole, tortilla soup, enchiladas mixta, shrimp tacos, plantains, churros, and pomegranate margaritas to-go. The total came out to be $130+ before tips, which I was very surprised about. Regardless, I think they messed up my shrimp tacos .. I had asked the employee how many tacos come in one order and I got vague responses of either 2-3 with the shrimp tacos. Huh? So was it 2, or 3? Either way, I ended up with ONE taco and, at $15 for the order, I was feeling a bit salty. I also didn't get the chocolate dipping sauce with my churros, but I didn't bother to call them and complain about it because it just wasn't worth the trouble. In terms of the other food - don't get me wrong, they were good but obnoxiously overpriced making me wonder if it was all worth it. The Tito Santana guacamole was supposed to pack a punch because of the peppers, but I didn't feel any heat. The guacamole was good overall (but, at $17 a bowl, I question my sanity in making such poor financial decisions). The pomegranate margaritas were delightful. I can't complain about the plantains and other items. Would I return? Perhaps when my wallet re-inflates and I feel bougie enough to pay an arm and a leg for nicely plated Mexican food, but, until then, I'll sit at home and let my wallet recuperate. read more

I can't believe I've never written a review for El Vez before, but I suspect at some point I wanted to keep the secret to myself before it became mobbed. I was wrong, and El Vez deserves to be shared. We've been coming to El Vez for the past seven years and it's our favorite restaurant in Philly. The menu changes each day, but we've never gone wrong with anything we've ordered. In particular, we love the picante de mariscos, the steak, any taco, the slow-cooked pork and the lime pie (among others). We've celebrated birthdays, remembrances, graduations and more here, as well as popped in for the over-the-top and casual dinner from time to time. We've been here by ourselves, primarily, and have taken almost all out of town guests and friends here at some point. This past weekend my husband threw a large birthday party for me in the back room for 30+ guests. It was as wonderful as any dinner we've had. Gonzalo was so easy to work with, and the food was plentiful, service was easy going and everyone felt comfortable in the space. I couldn't have asked for more out of El Vez and every member of the staff. It is not often that I find a restaurant that feels as much home as a night out, but El Vez fits that bill. read more

El Vez is a top notch Mexican restaurant. I have heard great things about it and I knew great things were in store after seeing people waiting outside the restaurant for it to open for lunch. Upon walking in I enjoyed the interior of the restaurant, especially the spinning low rider bike above the bar. When sitting down you are greeted by a naked mermaid tattoo looking image on the front of your menu which I was thought was... interesting. I opted for the "Poquito Dinero" lunch special and chose the Mexican Chopped Salad and the Vaca Frita (beef short rib) Burrito. I found this to be a great value. I enjoyed the salad and I found the burrito to be delicious. I loved the short rib in it and the salsa verde on the side. The burrito was also perfectly rolled tight which I really appreciated. Even though the burrito was more filling than I expected I still wanted try their dessert. I went with the Tres Leches cake and I really enjoyed that as well. Mexican food usually isn't my first choice, but I'm glad I decided to try this place out! read more

The upscale bar area is a hub of energy, with a lively and active vibe that sets the tone for a memorable evening. We kicked things off with the Chips & Salsa, a medley of crisp tortilla chips, vibrant salsas, and flavorful toppings that awakened our taste buds. For our main course, the Steak Tacos, cooked to perfection and adorned with a tangy tomatillo-chipotle salsa, and the Chicken Tacos enveloped in melted chihuahua cheese and a burst of salsa and juiciness. But the true highlight of our evening was the staff's exceptional service. Upon encountering a minor seating issue, they responded promptly and with utmost courtesy, transforming our initial disappointment into a heartwarming display of hospitality. I love El Vez! And Liz, my favorite server ever who really goes out of her way to take care of her customers. Thanks Liz! El Vez is a trendy looking spot that gets really crowded Thurs-Sat. and hard to get into without a reservation around these times too, so plan accordingly. My personal favorites are beef tacos (tender and delicious), salsa mexicana, the original guac and the churros! Apparently the margaritas are delicious but a little pricey, so be prepared to dish out money if you're going to drink. They do have pitchers of margaritas though. Either way, I really love El Vez, probably one of my favorite spots in the city. Just get a reservation, try not to get seated near the bar if you're just there to eat (you get crowded and bumped a lot by the happy hour crowd who are too tipsy to care), and make sure you have some cash if you're going to be drinking. read more

I can't get enough of El Vez! The food is like a party in my mouth, and the drinks are pure magic. But let me tell you about Lola, our server - she's a smiling machine! I swear, I tested her patience with all my little requests and my husband's tardy drink orders, but she just kept on grinning. Rain or shine, she was out there serving with a smile, checking on us all night long. Lola's positive energy made our dinner extra special. Lola, send me your schedule girl! From now on I am just gonna eat there when you you are working girlie!!! Seriously, thanks to her, we'll be back for more fun and deliciousness! Just a quick note: It seemed a bit chaotic at the hostess table with so many people, which left me feeling a little confused upon arrival for my reservation. Our first restaurant to try in Philly and we absolutely loved it!. Great decor, fresh ingredients, and a super attentive staff. Service was great and professionally quick not just quick. I ordered the red enchiladas, The enchiladas had a unique and inspired approach. I nearly always order enchiladas when I have Mexican. I want an unexpected twist on a classic, and that's exactly what I got. Their inside and outside seatings are perfect this place will give a real experience and as we were suggested and I am suggesting you that while dining outside try to do it in a time when the streets are closed otherwise your experience will be ruined for sure. And about the inside decor and view it was REAL romantic ambiance it makes you fall in love with it. Pretty sure it's a place for daters and celebrations. Over all it was a nice experience and love to had that. read more
