Did not really enjoy my experience here. Got the elote bowl and asada tacos. Everything was so bland beyond comprehension, even when adding salsa to the tacos and lime juice to the elote. The steak in my tacos was actually flavorless, very disappointing. Chips were flavorless and the elote dip turned into cement after it cooled down. Would not come back as there's many better options out there.

Staff was great and the interior design was cool, and very spacious. The food was hitting on all courses. They have something special with that elote dip, the cheese pull, the seasoning, the flavor, and the chips all come together for a super bite. The quesa birria tacos were some of the better birria tacos I've had in Philly. They didn't skip out on the cheese, they didn't use a ton of the fat meat which I appreciated. Some places you eat a birria taco and you're pulling out fat more than you're eating, not here! The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the mango margarita and that's cause it tasted like straight mango juice but it's a mocktail so not too much expected there. Would definitely visit again.

This place screams Mexican! The music was so perfect for the afternoon. The waitress Becky was so cool & sweet. I will be returning just because of her. The food was amazing. Especially the steak fajita. It came out sizzling full of onions and bell peppers. Just the way I like it. My friend and I also tried a few passion fruit & mango margaritas. One frozen and the other on the rocks. To die for!!!!!! Must try. I like the one on the rocks a little bit better. I also ordered the rice, beans, pico, and sour cream plate on the side to go with the fajita & everything was just seasoned so well. The steak was medium well and tasty. I wish I could go back and eat now. Omg. Loved everything about this place & the atmosphere.

Looking for a spot on the way to the Met. Finding parking wasn't too bad. We dined at a table near the bar. Our server was fast and pleasant. The prices were pretty reasonable for being in Philly. We went with the Al pastor tacos and steak burrito. You get three tacos for $10 which is great in the city. The avacado sauce for the tacos was extra, but worth it. The tacos were very flavorful, full of meat and very tender. The burrito was good and the steak was grilled, but could use a little more flavor or seasoning. But over still very good. They had Mexican Coke and Sprite available which we ordered. Would definitely come back and try some of the other dishes on the menu. The table next to us ordered the el lote dip which looked amazing.

Still delicious, even for take out. Love the enchiladas with chicken tinga, green and red sauce, and queso.

I met a friend here for dinner on a Friday night and was immediately seated as a walk-in by friendly hosts. The restaurant has an upbeat vibe with groups enjoying dinner at the bar and surrounding tables. It's a perfect place to bring a small group to chat over some margaritas and great food. We started with a house margarita and mojito that both had nice presentation and were tasty. We shared chips with queso which was the perfect start for our steak quesadilla and burrito. I also added a side of salsa verde and chipotle red salsa which were the perfect touch to the meal. Everything was flavorful and great for leftovers! I recommend this spot if you're looking for a casual night out!

Came in on a Friday night without reservations and was seated within 5 mins. The food was amazing! We ordered the elote corn dip, tostadas, and birria tacos for 2 people and it was soo filling. Also got the horchata and it was yummy! Services was quick and attentive. Can't wait to come back and try more dishes

Came here on a Sunday around 5 and there were a few tables. By the time we were leaving around 7, it was a full house. Staff were friendly and organized. The Choriqueso was full of delicious flavors, it was soooo good! I would go back just for the chips and dip. The two of us could not finish the dip because it's a big portion. I enjoyed my beef Birria tacos a lot, I loved the consistency of the soup dip (thicker than usual). Usually at other restaurants, Birria tacos are extremely greasy, but not here, HUGE PLUS. Would come back again and again.

Overall good food. Both the elote dip and Baja tacos were delicious. Baja tacos had good flavor but the fish itself was a little mushy. Maybe just a bad batch. Interior was pretty and had lots of seating. Service was also great. Wasn't a long wait and super friendly waiter. We came on a Friday night.

After having this place on my personal "Restaurants to Try" list, finally tried them out a couple of months ago and have ordered takeout a few times now. It doesn't disappoint! The food is so flavorful, tasty, clearly made with fresh ingredients and filling. The drinks we had were mixed perfectly. Between eating there and what we've had for pickup orders, everything has been great! Fish tacos, birria tacos, sopes, fajitas, flautas... It's all good! We will definitely continue to go/order from here and I highly recommend anyone check them out!

took a trip here with 2 of my sorority sisters because this spot has great reviews and let me just say it lived up to the hype. very casual environment upon entry and cute decorations to match the overall feel of the establishment. we were seated immediately at around 6pm on a wednesday. i believe this place does happy hour but we had just missed it, no worries, as we were genuinely here for some great food. mike our server was very nice and had no problem giving us recommendations. i went with the fried fish tacos, which were fantastic. each taco had a good amount of protein & the avocado was fresh! one of my sisters (not pictured) also went with a taco platter which she thoroughly enjoyed. she mentioned that the rice she ordered on the side was also very good. my other sister went with the fish platter and her plate was CLEAN. she said everything was flavorful, hot and cooked to almost perfection. the plating was gorgeous might i add. if you're looking for a casual place to dine that doesn't sacrifice quality because it's laidback please check out this spot. it's AMAZING.

Overall: decent/mid Mexican food in a upbeat and festive setting. Definitely more authentic than most "Mexican" restaurants in center city, but don't expect real spicy salsa served here. Also they charge 0.80$ per extra sauce you ask for.. coming from LA this is absurd to me lol. Order: Birria tacos: flavorful, cheesy, but not as authentic as I imagined Al pastor: cooked and seasoned well, served over flour tortillas though.. thought they would at least give me the option to choose but since they didn't, I thought default tortilla would be corn.. Salsa: ordered hot but tasted sweet and sour and not hot at all Drinks were good but $$$ ($14-16, oof) also NOT BYOB. Would I come back?.. maybe if I need to fix an urgent Mexican food craving but probably would not choose to come back. Maybe I just ordered the wrong things who knows... Maybe try burritos next time.

The meat in the tacos was so dry that it was hard to chew and swallow. Some of the pieces were cooked to a crisp. No amount of salsa could make them better. I'm sorry I didn't take photos of the tacos, but trust me me I get no pleasure from leaving a bad review for this place; I am not lying or exaggerating. I thought they were going to be one of our local gems. I choked down a half a taco, gave the rest to my husband and he couldn't eat them either. The churros actually had raw batter in the middle and the outside was rubbery and hard at the same time. You could barely bite through it. I'm a cook and I know that that is about keeping the oil at an even temperature to get the inside done and not overcook the outside. Someone in the kitchen did not know what they were doing. The thing is, I have had their food before and it was pretty good. I don't know if there is a new chef or what happened, but I can't trust them after this experience.

But El Rey is good in its own right, taking familiar foods and flavors, with a bit of a fancier twist, and making a good meal that I love to eat and enjoy! Seating and service here is friendly and prompt. Even when it's pretty loud and seems packed, there are always a handful of open tables available, where we've usually been able to be seated almost immediately. Such was the case this evening. We were on a bit of a time crunch so we ordered immediately and our food came out so fast that the waiter for our table was surprised as the food beat him with our napkins to the table. We ordered the Tuna Tostada and the Yucatan Spiced Chicken Fajitas. Both were amazing! Good thing for our tight timeline, the food was gone as fast as it came. The waiter helpfully recommend the house hot sauce, which was certainly spicy and a good compliment on our fajitas. Overall, a great place to dine for Mexican-inspired! There were booths, tables and bar seating available with Wonder Years playing on a few TVs with warm lighting and the incandescent Christmas lights that are reminiscent of Grandma's house (bonus points for nostalgia!) I requested a booth and she promptly sat me. She brought me water, menus and explained the specials to me. As I perused the menu, I was overwhelmed with the options available to me. I ultimately landed on one of the dinner specials (Cabernet braised brisket with a side of carrots & buttery mashed potatoes), chips & salsa and a Paloma. Chips landed first and while both salsas were fresh, I still felt the need to add salt. (Everyone's palate is different) Food & drink arrived simultaneously. Paloma was made strong but tasted more like a classic margarita as opposed to the tang of grapefruit that comes with a Paloma. Still good! The food was essentially cold & looked like it had been sitting for awhile being served to me but all the flavors were there. The brisket fell apart, I didn't even need a knife to cut it. The carrots were tender and the mashed potatoes were buttery. I would 1000% go back for the drinks and service, however I may get something different on the menu.
