Came on a Sunday late afternoon, not busy at all. Very well decorated, great music and very clean! Had the Picaditas and Chalupitas for appetizers, and Tacos de Barbacoa, Parrillada Mexican(steak and octopus-we're perfectly cooked) and Octopus Tortas. All were amazing, great flavor, very well put together, fresh ingredients also, everything we ordered had great taste. Also ordered their Horchata Tres leches(amazing, never had it before), and also had a cheesecake. The restaurant has a good ambience too, and service was impeccable very attentive to all our questions. It's BYOB with street parking. Would definitely comeback and recommend for great authentic Mexican food.

I walk past this very bright and fun looking restaurant every day and I couldn't wait to try it with my girlfriends for my birthday dinner. Five of us had dinner and everyone loved their meal and we all got different things! Watermelon gazpacho, shrimp tacos, oysters, Mexican corn, Mexican Coke, rice and beans, bang bang shrimp, everything was delicious and made perfection and beautifully arranged! This place is a treat and it's worth a visit! Our server was very polite and accommodating.

I just left this restaurant and the food was unbelievably good. I wasn't a big fan of the horchata tres leches cake just because I'm used to the super sweet flavor of the regular tres leches cake but my fiend loved his so it's just an opinion. What a delicious food! Nice place and the chef need to ge his compliments. I'm definitely coming back.

This place is a gem! The food is authentic Mexican and is some of the best we have ever had! It's a BYOB or BYOT which made it a very reasonably priced dinner!

My new favorite Mexican restaurant. I'm so happy I discovered this place with my husband. We went a Sunday afternoon and had lunch- and had a great time. The restaurant starts you with chips and salsa which is great. We also got the guacamole which was super fresh. They have a wide array of tacos from their taco bar, we had the lamb barbacoa and tuna tacos. Both were absolutely delicious. The tuna tacos have a nice fusion flair with Japanese elements. For other dishes: we loved the enchiladas de mole, they were very decadent and packed with flavor. I also noticed you get 4 enchiladas! A lot of places they give you 2 or 3 (don't get my started on the ones that give you just 1) so we were definitely full and satisfied! The spicy potatoes are another Asian Mexican fusion dish with really good flavor. We ended with the Churro Cheesecake which was perfectly balanced and not too sweet. Every dish was beautifully plated. We can't wait to go back!!

This place is a cute little restaurant located on the corner in South Philly. There's street parking available. It's also BYOB! I think it slipped my mind but I would've definitely brought some alcohol! However, their margarita mix did just the trick as well. I went here with a group on a hot Saturday day and we were seated immediately. I 100% recommend the elote. It was so good. The margarita mix with tamarind juice was so good as well. That hint of tajin chili/lime seasoning gave it that little kick! The bang bang fried shrimp is to die for! The pollo tacos I didn't get to try, but they looked great. Quesabirria tacos were so good as well as the sauce. The Tinga empanadas - I also didn't try but it looked appetizing. The guacamole and queso fundido were soooooo goooood! They were hot and we may have mixed them together for that zesty flavor. I also like that they offered bottled water. Overall, the price wasn't bad and the food was actually really good. I would definitely come back here because the prices were decent for the food that we had and they were good portion sizes that we didn't feel bloated afterwards. This was a great place and I would recommend it to anyone who loves trying out new foods! I also liked that it was family owned and our waitress was friendly as well. 10/10 overall.

Never saw smaller portions from a mexican restaurant in my life. It was not cheap either. The tacos were 2-3 bites and the tostadas were the size if my finger. Mexican rice was microwaved white rice. How this place has all great reviews I am confused! Yuppie don't know good food its really a shame they run yelp . Also they gave no receipt

Nopalito soup is a must to try

Booths and bar seating is available as well as a patio on weekends. It is located in a sketchy area but a police car is stationed on the corner. I felt as safe as I do in other areas of Philly. Street parking is available within a few feet. The cocktails were very good with many different kinds of margs and other drinks. Beer and wine are also available. We were greeted as soon s we walked in by both the bartender and one of the owners. Our server brought water as soon as we sat down. She was attentive and helpful with explanations. The food here is authentic! Several different kinds of guacamole are available. We chose the one with pomegranate. It added a nice crunch and flavor. One with grasshopper was available. lol that was a no for me! The trio of empanadas were delicious. We shared a carnitas taco platter and branzino platter. The tacos were tasty. The branzino was cooked nicely with good flavor. The rice and beans and Brussels spouts and mushrooms were all delicious. I'll definitely be back!

The meat in the tacos was so dry that it was hard to chew and swallow. Some of the pieces were cooked to a crisp. No amount of salsa could make them better. I'm sorry I didn't take photos of the tacos, but trust me me I get no pleasure from leaving a bad review for this place; I am not lying or exaggerating. I thought they were going to be one of our local gems. I choked down a half a taco, gave the rest to my husband and he couldn't eat them either. The churros actually had raw batter in the middle and the outside was rubbery and hard at the same time. You could barely bite through it. I'm a cook and I know that that is about keeping the oil at an even temperature to get the inside done and not overcook the outside. Someone in the kitchen did not know what they were doing. The thing is, I have had their food before and it was pretty good. I don't know if there is a new chef or what happened, but I can't trust them after this experience.

Honestly El Rey is great!…read more As a Los Angeles native, Mexican food is always a "not as good as California" affair, and with that bar, it's hard to find anything that holds a candle. But El Rey is good in its own right, taking familiar foods and flavors, with a bit of a fancier twist, and making a good meal that I love to eat and enjoy! Seating and service here is friendly and prompt. Even when it's pretty loud and seems packed, there are always a handful of open tables available, where we've usually been able to be seated almost immediately. Such was the case this evening. We were on a bit of a time crunch so we ordered immediately and our food came out so fast that the waiter for our table was surprised as the food beat him with our napkins to the table. We ordered the Tuna Tostada and the Yucatan Spiced Chicken Fajitas. Both were amazing! Good thing for our tight timeline, the food was gone as fast as it came. The waiter helpfully recommend the house hot sauce, which was certainly spicy and a good compliment on our fajitas. Overall, a great place to dine for Mexican-inspired! Laying aside my California bias, El Rey is a fun time every time we come.

I hadn't been to El Rey in years, but we scored last-minute Valentine's reservations and WOW. The vibe was lively, warm, and perfect for a fun night out. - Let's talk about these STEAK TACOS . Perfectly seasoned, tender, flavorful -- the kind of bite that makes you close your eyes for a second. They were so good I came back two days later just for them. That's not a craving... that's infatuation. - The Chayote Salad completely surprised me. Fresh, bright, and paired with their homemade hot sauce? My palate was awakened. I even brought it home (with dressing and hot sauce on the side) and it still hit! Speaking of heat -- if you love spicy food, ASK for their homemade hot sauce. It's bold, fiery, and addictive. I genuinely want a bottle for home. Service? 10/10. From the manager to the hosts to the bartender -- everyone was kind, attentive, and patient. They even remembered me from Valentine's Day, which says everything about how they treat their guests. Bathroom Check: Clean? Yes. Cute ambiance? Yes. Great mirror for photos? Absolutely. And again -- CLEAN. El Rey, I'll be back soon

There were booths, tables and bar seating available with Wonder Years playing on a few TVs with warm lighting and the incandescent Christmas lights that are reminiscent of Grandma's house (bonus points for nostalgia!) I requested a booth and she promptly sat me. She brought me water, menus and explained the specials to me. As I perused the menu, I was overwhelmed with the options available to me. I ultimately landed on one of the dinner specials (Cabernet braised brisket with a side of carrots & buttery mashed potatoes), chips & salsa and a Paloma. Chips landed first and while both salsas were fresh, I still felt the need to add salt. (Everyone's palate is different) Food & drink arrived simultaneously. Paloma was made strong but tasted more like a classic margarita as opposed to the tang of grapefruit that comes with a Paloma. Still good! The food was essentially cold & looked like it had been sitting for awhile being served to me but all the flavors were there. The brisket fell apart, I didn't even need a knife to cut it. The carrots were tender and the mashed potatoes were buttery. I would 1000% go back for the drinks and service, however I may get something different on the menu.
