My family had lunch today at Blue Barn. This is such a great place! We have been a bunch of of times to their Corte Madera location, but I love the seating area here both inside and on their huge back patio. This is a counter service place and the line can sometimes can take a lot during busy days. They have a lot of great options here for food and a good size kids menu! My wife and I opted for salads on this visit. The cost feels a bit high, but the salads are huge and feel well worth the cost. I had the Thai Chicken salad. I love the dressing on the salad and the crunch from the peanuts and crispy wontons is so good! The chili lime chicken has a nice tangy flavor and the veggies all give a nice, herby flavor. My wife had the Tostada salad, which has a delicious, smoky and sweet flavored dressing. My daughter had their chicken tenders and fries, which she enjoyed. This is a great place for larger groups, and its location on Grant Ave is brings a lot of excitement to this downtown Novato neighborhood. read more

Blue Barn is a must visit in downtown Novato for salads and sandwiches! I stopped in on a Tuesday afternoon and they were packed! I ordered their tomato soup with a slice of focaccia and my friend ordered the winter salad with brussel sprouts, butternut squash, broccoli, kale, pomegranates pinenuts, quinoa, parmesan, meyer lemon-balsamic dressing and seasonal mixed greens. The salad was huge and looked delicious! I will be coming back to try that! My soup was very flavorful and full of croutons & scallions. The food came out very quickly for them being so busy. They have a cute indoor seating area as well as patio seating, which would be perfect for the warmer weather months.  The staff was very friendly and helpful when placing my order. The skirt steak sandwhich is like a bougie torta and while I do highly recommend it, the sandwhich alone is like $20, à la carte Fries are $5, a drink is $4 and that's just one person. The sandwich is massive and I couldn't even finish all my fries so it felt like a waste of money. In my opinion, a smaller serving of fries ought to be included in the $20 as a meal. Will I go again? Used to be a 5/5 and one of the favorite places my family (two kids, 3 and 5) would visit on weekends. We were just there tonight, and were very sad they added wooden stump structure right in the middle of the grassy area. I saw two kids get pushed off of there -- someone is going to hurt themselves. This place is great! I work close by and we both order lunch or come here after work to hang out and grab a bite to eat together. The salads are HUGE, fresh and delicious. The tater tots are a huge hit and always a must when we come here. I also like getting their crispy chicken tenders as a side too. I've never gotten a sandwich but I hear they are great as well. Location wise it's very convenient as it's right off the highway. There is a parking lot directly behind them you can park if you can't find parking on the street in downtown as well. I come to Novato often for work and every time I come I always stop at this Blue Barn. The food is always fresh, service is always good, and I love sitting on their back patio in the warmer months. It is pricey, but definitely worth it in my opinion. My go-to is the cobber salad. read more

I'm so happy Blue Barn is in Novato. The food is pricy but filling. The kids chicken nuggets it's a hearty portion. My son loves that they have tator tots. My husband loves their salads, and I love their sandwiches. They have a variety of beverages, and I like to grab a glass of wine or iced tea. My husband likes their beers. They have outdoor and indoor seating. A huge booth is available inside so if you have a large group, that's a nice and cozy find. The outdoor seating is super cute and clean. They have live music sometimes which is fun for the kids. The staff is super kind and attentive, and the vibe is just overall a happy one. I've been going to this spot a lot lately, and honestly, it's become one of my favorite places to eat. Even though some of the food is fried, it doesn't feel as heavy or "junk food-y" as you'd expect--probably because they include plenty of fresh veggies and thoughtful sides. I usually visit the Novato location if I want to sit down because they have plenty of indoor seating, which makes it comfortable. The Corte Madera location is always busy, so I usually do pickup there. Outdoor seating can be crowded or chilly, so it's easier to grab your order and go. Both locations are in super friendly, walkable areas, so you can easily explore the neighborhood while you wait. Parking is convenient at both spots, and if you're at the town center location, there are plenty of stores to check out while your food is being prepared. The food does take a little time to make, but that's only because they're usually handling 10-15 orders at once. If you're super hungry, they have lots of small, ready-to-go snacks like popcorn and nibbles to tide you over. As for the meals, the portions are generous. Usually, my boyfriend and I will split a sandwich, or do a sandwich and a salad between us--they're big and very satisfying. Their fries are amazing--crispy, golden, and perfectly seasoned. The tater tots weren't my favorite, so I'd skip those next time. Their sandwiches are hearty and flavorful, and the salads are fresh and definitely not an afterthought. It's a little more expensive than fast food, but I'd say it's similar in price to places like Super Duper, and totally worth it. I feel like you get a lot of value for what you pay. Friendly service, the food was cooked to order and the location in Novato is the only one I recommend. It's big and the have life music in the back patio. Came in on a Friday and it wasn't too busy. It's located right in downtown Novato so parking can be a bit difficult since it's all street parking. The space is pretty big. They offer both indoor and outdoor dining. Back space is a good size and allows kids to run around and play. Menu boards are above on the wall. If you look for to long you could hurt your neck. Water is self-serve in mason jars. Utensils, both plastic & silverware, are self serve as well. We ordered - kickin' chicken sandwich. It's a good size sandwich. It was a little messy to eat with the slaw coming out with almost every bite but it was pretty delicious. Thai chicken salad. Huge salad. I didn't realize how big the serving is. Good enough for 2 people, maybe 3, to share. You can order it tossed or with the dressing on the side. It was very yummy. 2 orders of kids chicken tenders. Each order comes with 4 decent size pieces. Nothing too crazy about them. Pretty basic chicken tenders. Side order of fries. I do wish fried came with the sandwich or kids item. I will say, the side order is plenty but I think it may be because they ran out of the bowls it's normally served in. Overall, good place. I've been a longtime fan of Blue Barn and always considered it one of the best spots for salads and fresh food in Novato. Unfortunately, the quality has really gone downhill. On my last two visits, I ordered the Waldorf salad and sandwich.. both times, the ingredients were noticeably different, and the overall freshness was extremely disappointing. The strawberries tasted old, and they added pickled beets, which completely threw off the flavor profile. They also added what tasted like corn nuts, though I can't be sure.... You good, but you pricey. My cobb salad was $18 or $19. It was delicious with fresh lettuce and toppings, but the chicken protein was slight. They make their own ranch, and you can tell, it was delicious. The menu consists of an array of salads and sandwiches and they all looked great. Pretty good. Wife and I there for lunch on a really hot day. Good air conditioning inside. You order from a menu posted over the serving bar. There is a lot to read, and if you sit down you won't easily read it, so recommend that you stand there as you enter and then sit down for the wait person to take your order. Lots of salads and unusual sandwiches. I had to cobber salad ($20.95), which was like a cobb (!) salad with limey chicken, bacon and egg. Their ranch dressing is great and they will sell you more if you like. We ordered French Fries ($4.25) so we did get extra ranch for dipping for $1. Wife had a truffle sando/sandwich ($16.50) which was a large sandwich on herbed focaccia including pepper turkey, brie, roma tomato, pickled onion, seasonal greens & truffled-garlic aioli. We don't visit often but when we do, the food is pretty good. Lots of salad selections and sandwiches too. They have steak sandwich that is pretty outstanding. I've had a few of the salads and was not overly impressed by them but they were all decent. The best part of this place is the outdoor dining area which is exceptional. The staff are usually pretty friendly although we've had one or two encounters that were a little iffy - just disinterested though, nothing major. Worth a try if you've never been, especially on warm nights when they have live music. They have a full bar too, although a small drink menu. We finally found a nice place with a courtyard and some music where we could relax and have a drink. The first time we went we sat in the rear of the restaurant, their wax no music but as we sat there with our drinks it turned into an obnoxious day care with kids running around and parents drinking, letting them run amok.the second we sat right next to the square tried to eat and listen to music only to have a ball hit me in the side of the head, when I asked the child to be more careful, the parent came over and gave me a tongue lashing. First visit - most of us had salads - they were quite big, very fresh ingredients and tasty. What I didn't like is that they have a tip suggested on the bill - starting at 15%, then 20% and 25% however we do all the serving yourself. Unfortunately, the patio has turned into a play area for far too many kids. It's like an outdoor Gymboree. The last three times that we were there, kids were running around wild and free, totally unsupervised. If the kids would just stay in the play area, that would be fine. Unfortunately, they are running around where the tables are almost crashing into guests. Not only is it no fun for other guests, but it's a liability for Blue Barn. No doubt there will be a lawsuit when a kid gets injured, or guest gets injured, and the lawyers will read through this Yelp post and say, "Blue Barn knew it and didn't do anything about it. They had prior notice and took no action." Seriously, management needs to step in and tell parents that are not supervising their kids to supervise them or leave. For those parents that are keeping their kids in check, thank you. For those that are totally oblivious to the fact that this is a restaurant first and a child care center second, please watch your children and tell them not to be running around other patrons. I wanted to share my recent experience visiting Blue Barn in Novato. My wife, my sister-in-law, and I had just walked into the outdoor area when a busser immediately raised his voice at us, asking if our dogs were service animals. After we let him know they weren't, he told us we couldn't be there. There was no greeting, no explanation, just a very abrupt interaction that left us feeling uncomfortable. It felt especially odd because we've always entered through the back to enjoy the outdoor area whenever we've come to eat here in the past. Honestly, it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but I do feel it could have been handled with more care and professionalism. A simple greeting or a more respectful tone would have gone a long way. read more
