Solid! Good food and service. Was very quiet on a Monday morning but happy they were open.

Walked in around 10:30am on a Monday and see just 2 other people in the whole place. I was thinking I hope this place is good for breakfast. Attentive and friendly service and there are some nice options on the menu. We ordered their corned beef hash and the breakfast sandwich which also came with potatoes. Our food was delicious and coffee was hot and strong. We wished that the coffee creamer be more creamier (like real half n half) because we think it was just regular milk. Also the sourdough toast we opted with the corned beef hash tasted old/stale. We also got a to-go order of their California BLT omelette for our daughter who said was really good. She told us too that her sourdough toast tasted stale. Perhaps we'll opt for another type of bread for next time.

We stopped at the Golden Gate Bistro in Novato for a quick drink and a bite to eat. This wasn't a planned visit, we just happened to be in the area and thought we'd give it a try. To our surprise, there was live music going on when we arrived. At first, we weren't sure if we wanted to deal with the noise, but once we sat outside where the music was playing, we quickly realized it was more enjoyable than overwhelming. It gave the place a warm, lively energy. The service stood out right away. The staff were attentive without being pushy, and everything moved at a nice, easy pace. We ordered tacos and a roasted beet salad topped with grilled chicken. Both dishes were fresh and well-prepared; the tacos were flavorful and satisfying, while the salad was a really good mix of earthy and bright flavors. The chicken on top added just the right amount of richness. At first, I wasn't planning on having a drink, but the fun atmosphere got the better of me. We ended up splitting not one, but two Modelo Lagers. I'll go ahead and blame the combination of good food, good music, and a relaxed outdoor vibe for that decision. All in all, our first visit was a pleasant surprise. Golden Gate Bistro felt like the kind of place you can stop by casually, whether you're looking for a meal, a drink, or just a change of pace with some live entertainment. If you haven't tried it yet, it's worth checking out--you might be as pleasantly surprised as we were.

Nice find in downtown Novato. Great location with plenty of parking, although may not be right outside the front door. Nice table layout with a bar area serving a good selection of beer and wine. Ordered the fried chicken sandwich with a side order of onion rings. Sandwich was ample size and enough to split between two. Nice ratio of coleslaw and the chicken was cooked tender on the inside with a crispy, expertly fried crust. Excellent! Staff very welcoming and we very much enjoyed our late lunch. I'll be back.

We went here for Father' Day. We ordered the crab salad, pulled pork sandwich, fried chicken sandwich and the fish and chips. Everything was good. My mother said she would return for the fish and chips. She likes the beer batter. The pulled pork and fried chicken sandwiches were both very tasty. One slight negative to the sandwiches was the choice of bun. I would've used a brioche bun or something moister / softer. Mixed reviews on the crab salad. I didn't try it, but we were wondering if it's fresh crab. We also ordered the garlic knots. Very good, but could use more garlic :) They have a large outdoor space and a smaller indoor space. I like this place. I will be back.

I think I discovered a hidden gem! Came here for brunch with my husband, son, and mother-in-law on a Sunday and was shocked to see it was relatively empty. Based on the great reviews, I thought it would be packed. There are other places in Novato I've been to nowhere near as good that have lines out the door. *shrug* There are two things that typically make me feel that a brunch restaurant is above average: excellent coffee, and good side of fruit. This place had both - probably the best coffee I've ever had at a breakfast/brunch place. Not a latte, just their black coffee. We all remarked that it was excellent (obviously not my three-year-old son, he doesn't drink coffee, but the rest of us). Beyond these two things, the rest of their food was also fantastic. I ordered a blueberry pancake, and it had the blueberries inside of it, not on top. To me, another hallmark of an excellent breakfast/brunch restaurant. Granted, the place was pretty empty, but the service was excellent. Our server was there when we needed him and did refills promptly, but wasn't overbearing. I was very impressed and can't wait to come back!

This is our second visit, first for dinner. We walked in and there was not one customer inside..We went to the patio as I had my dog..There was a few customers.. I really wasn't super happy that at happy hour I couldn't get a real margarita with tequila..In their defense I guess a hard liquor license is hard to get.. I ordered the mushroom chicken, overall it was good and I ate it all..Im not sure the mashed potatoes are not boxed instant potatoes..but they were ok..the chicken and veggies were good..My guy ordered the short ribs,, it was ok..the brussel sprouts were really good. The service was slow but good and everything arrived hot and looked fresh. The server, was really nice, same as our first visit. He really cared about our experience..that was appreciated..

I've been here a couple times and each time the food was excellent. The first time I came with the hubby and we ordered the calamari and onion rings for our appetizers. He loves calamari so of course we had to order it. The pieces were fried perfectly and there were also pieces of fried jalapeños. For my entree I got the chilaquiles. It was incredible. There is some heat to it which I liked even though I usually can't tolerate spicy food. The second time I came for lunch but I wanted to order a breakfast entree which is available for lunch and dinner. I got the breakfast burrito with jalapeños on the side with a side of crispy potatoes. The breakfast burrito was great and very filling and the potatoes were made just the way I like them. The service was nice and friendly. The portions are big which is great. There is also an outdoor patio where they have live music in the evenings. I'm not sure of the live music schedule. I'll definitely be back to try other items on the menu.

Food was delicious Ambiance moderate to low noise Service was great! We are visiting for the races and wanted to try something than the norm. Novota has lots of hidden gems and this is one of them!

My daughter and I went here on a Saturday night and there was plenty of open seating. They quickly bring you chips and two types of salsa and water. The red salsa was a unique recipe which set it apart from many generic red salsa that I encounter at other Mexican places. The green salsa was tasty also and not too spicy. I ordered the tropical pork. I told my daughter that it was a Mexican version of Chinese sweet and sour pork. It has many of the same ingredients. It was very flavorful and came with rice, beans, and plantains. It also came with a nice side salad of mixed greens and balsamic vinaigrette (?). My daughter ordered a combo plate with a veggue burrito and chicken flauta. I tasted both. Good, but didn't really shine. We were both surprised to see broccolli in her burrito. Also surprised that it didn't have rice or beans in it. Aren't they considered veggie? They have a huge menu of Mexican-inspired cocktails. Maybe next time. I like the feel of this place, the staff, the food and the prices. They also have a decent amount of parking. I will be back. I'd like to try some other items on the menu.

We finally got the chance to do that, and it made us wish we had done it earlier. As we entered the restaurant, I saw the bar with people sitting there, drinking, chatting, and watching football on TV. My first mistaken impression was that this was more of a working man's hangout. But when we went into the dining area, we were seated, and I looked around at the other folks there and overheard some of their conversations, I realized that the place is more of a local favorite. The atmosphere was warm and family-oriented. I saw couples, young and old, and families with children of various ages. Our server stopped by shortly after we sat down, and we received a basket of freshly made chips and salsa, both of which were delicious. I had read about their tasty margaritas but decided against ordering one this time because I was tired and driving home to San Francisco. So we went straight to the main course! I ordered Adobado, a dish I hadn't tried before. Adobado features thin slices of pork tenderloin marinated and grilled in a chipotle-adobado sauce, served with plantains and sour cream. It turned out to be a very satisfying and fulfilling choice, but not enough to prevent me from asking for a flan. Let me tell you about my obsession with flan! I love flan, but to me, a good flan is one that is not too sweet and not overcooked to be too hard. It should be firm enough to not fall apart when served to you, but soft enough to tremble as it is presented! The flan here was perfect! The two guys who worked on the floor were wonderful. They answered our questions while we were ordering and stopped at our table several times afterward to see if we needed anything and to make sure everything was fine. The restaurant has nice decorations. I don't know much about its history in the neighborhood, but it seems to have been there for years. I spent a few minutes looking around at the various drawings on the walls and other decorations around the dining area. It will grab your attention. Overall, this was a pleasant experience. We will stop by there again, and I'll make sure to try their margarita next time!

When I say small, they were the size of the bowl you order fries and they give you ketchup. Now, for the price you pay for Mexican food now a day, I am expecting a little more salsa and chips. I ordered the chicken soup with a side of avocado to put on top and my husband had a beer along with tacos. I noticed they were very busy with a lot of people coming in for pickup. We were starting to get nervous because the game was about to begin and our food was taking a long time. even though we had to go ask for our food, worried that we were forgotten. I still did not dock them a star because of how friendly they were and how delicious the food was. Very nice people work here! We enjoyed complementary chips, along with a tasty bean dip, My soup was a generous portion, and the broth was tasty but a bit on the salty side, still, loaded with vegetables and generous portion of chicken: two drumsticks. The squeeze of lime that was provided was the perfect compliment. It would've been nice to have more time and feel relaxed, but we had to rush back for the game. I have a favorite Mexican restaurant in San Rafael however, every time we go there, the bright fluorescent lighting is brutal and it's like eating in a refrigerator . And the people that work there are kind of like robots and don't really seem to care about us. I'm only saying this because yes, the food is important and Tommy's has absolutely delicious food, but it is also about feeling comfortable in the environment. Next time we are in Novato, we will definitely eat here again!

El Rey has been a local spot in Novato for many years, family-owned and known for serving traditional Mexican dishes in a welcoming setting. As a first-time visitor, I left impressed. The food, service, and relaxed atmosphere made for a very enjoyable stop on our drive. We would definitely come back again the next time we're in Novato.
