Plato centro americano
Araceli G.

It was not overly crowded when I was there over the weekend. We all enjoyed our meals with the refreshing aguas frescas; I had the pineapple and my husband and mom had the guanábana. For food my mom had pupusas, I had the huevos rancheros and husband had the desayuno centro americano. I feel good supporting this small business, plus it's good portion at a decent price. The restaurant was nice and quiet which allowed us to enjoy our time conversing. I look forward to returning soon!

Great place to come with your folks. Loved the food and sweet hospitality. The dishes are pure and hearty. If you're in the area how can you not stop by for a pupusa and fresh baked cookie?

Tacos chapimese & pork pupisa

So many things on the menu but if your not familiar with Central American food, it's kind of hard to choose because there are no photos or descriptions on the menu or menu boards. We ended up getting 3 pupusas again. The pork, chicken and zucchini. They all were good and kind of fun to eat because they're like pancakes with fillings. It also came with a flavorful tomato's sauce that I liked because it didn't rely on heat to give it flavor. But my favorite part of the dish was the tiny cabbage salad on the side. The owner brought us an extra plate with another little side of it which I finished quickly . It had so much flavor. I'd like to come back and try different foods but have to educate myself a bit more on Guatemalan cuisine. Lol.

I get notices on my Yelp to try restaurants in my area, this was a recent one. Since we moved here I've really not been satisfied with Latin food choices. I was super excited to see this one..Well I read reviews and tryed some of the locals favorites..No joke the Tacos Chapines are my favorite tacos this far in my 56 years of life. Of course you cannot go without having their freshly made papusas, man they are good and the sauces that come with each dish are really flavorful..We took home some Plantanos with leche"crema" inside..Were going to have them with coffee. But I'm way to full to eat them yet.. The staff, and owners were so welcoming and took time to help us order..I'd eat here again and again..Best place hands down for tacos and Latin foods..Can't wait to try some more items on the menu..For now we are happy and full. Thankyou to the owners and staff working tonight for making our visit, also my Birthday dinner super special and fun.. I highly recommend eating here..You will not be disappointed.

Al pastor taco

This not a Mexican restaurant but they serve some similar items. I really liked this spot because they have a variety of dishes that you might find in Central America. It's a nice change from a typical Mexican restaurant menu. Since this was our first time here, we ordered several different items. We ordered several flavors of pupusas and tacos. My daughters ordered horchata which seemed to be good, but I'm not a big fan of this type of beverage. I got an al pastor and a chicken taco. Both were good. Al Pastor is my favorite meat choice for tacos. Their version was good. My daughters really enjoyed the chicken tacos and said they'd come back for those. I've only had pupusas a few times before this. They have never ever grabbed me, but I'm always willing to try a new one. I got the pork pupusa. I would not have known it was pork if I hadn't ordered it. It was average and was helped by the side of salsa(?) and cabbage. My daughters also tried the pupusas and also thought they were okay. We all agreed that pupusas weren't flavorful enough. This place was good and we'd like to come back. There are definitely other items on the the menu that we'd like to try. Notes: They have several tables outdoors. They have an attached market. they have very good and long hours of operation.

Tacos Chapines - house specialty, served with a tangy salsa. I devoured them

Talk about a hole-in-the-wall, I knew where this place was and still had a hard time finding it! (PS: Next door to Tommy Salsa). Well, Guatemalan food has arrived in Novato and I couldn't be happier. Always on the lookout for something different, I was intrigued to learn of a new restaurant opening in the shopping center strip known for Redwood Bagel & Tommy Salsa. Today, my wife and niece came with me to check it out. The menu is full of exotic sounding dishes as well as some very typical Central American fare - there are menu photos posted here to check out. I went for the Tacos Chapines, my wife had the Caldo de pollo (gallina), and my niece just had a bean and cheese Pupusa with a horchata. Just the smell of the place made us even hungrier as we waited (not long) for our meals. My niece kept saying "oh yeah I made the right choice" as she wolfed down her pupusa, my wife couldn't believe how much food came for her soup (a bowl of soup PLUS a plate of chicken and rice), and the house special tacos were off the hook! The people at the next table kept asking "What's that? What did you order" and their plates looked just as good as ours! Only open for a couple of weeks as of this writing, I hope Antigua has a LOONG tenure here in Novato. I'm tempted to go back tomorrow and try three more dishes! Just a note - the restaurant is attached to a market, so if you go in the Redwood Bagel side you'll have to walk to the back and make a right to get into the restaurant. Table service was very prompt and everyone seems very friendly! Check it out, something DIFFERENT for a change!

$15.00 BUCKS FOR THESE TINY TACOS- and a Horchata that was 90% ICE.
  SO NOT WORTH IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BAD, BAD SERVICE!!- Greasy food! There was one table inside and one out, yet it took 35 minutes to get my food... TWO LITTLE -ITTY BITTY TACOS. 6 people working there at the time. These 2 tacos and a horchata cost me $14.00 bucks - NO CHIPS AND I HAD TO ASK FOR SALSA. The reviews on this place must be fake!

Rellenitos are delicious!!

Platanos Rellenos look amazing. Are they gluten-free, by any chance? For that matter, are papusas gluten-free?

Is there a happy hour?

Not I am aware of yet.

Is there an online menu? I don't see one on the site.

No, just what you see on YELP. There are MANY specials every day also.

Two companions ordered and raved about their burger. Everyone loved the crispy-on-the-outside and tender-on-the-inside fries. They were gracious to create a special order for me: 2 eggs scrambled with spinach, diced tomatoes, and chorizo; iceberg lettuce, plantains, and homemade hollandaise. Since l adore extremely lemony hollandaise, I asked for lemon wedges; they brought 3 and I could have used even more. (I really like it lemony!) Our server was fun, sweet, competent, and friendly. There are so many wonderful options on the menu--breakfast all day including omelets, waffles, and pancakes. Thursdays are for special pricing for pupusas I can't wait to try. The ambience is adorable. It's a Western theme. Our server wore a fringe vest. There are adorable stools (see photo!) that are actually as comfortable as they are cute. There are two big screen TVs that had lovely spring scenes that made me pause, smile, and soak it in. There's a rack of Western hats--perhaps for little buckaroos to wear when seated on the horse getting their photo taken. There's a huge white throne bench for photos, too. Super fun. I'll be back!

The salad with the sandwich was uninspired plain iceberg lettuce. The elote was mild, not bad and came with (yummy) cotija and mayo. The barstools at the front that look like legs are cute but the aggressive cowboy decor with white linen tablecloths felt misaligned. I don't think they know the vibe they are going for. I'd go again and try something else when in the area. Their menu is huge!

The chicken was so flavorful & moist, the plantains were great as expected, & the beans were good too with a surprise piece of potato inside. It also came with a mixed green salad, it was a great value for price compared with the portion. The service was very friendly, I also ordered to the wrong location in Mill Valley but was able to call to cancel the order without charge. I picked up my order from the store/to-go section so I didn't see the restaurant space but just looking at the space I was in, it was so cute. Tasty but I expected more…read more This place has never disappointed. I wouldn't even say I was disappointed necessarily when me and my wife went here for breakfast recently, but something just felt like it was missing. I ordered a Huevos Benedictos which is basically Sol Food's version of an Eggs Benedict but it didn't really hit like their Lunch/Dinner side of the menu hits. I think the reason I knew something was off was because I needed the Pique to "make" it taste good when normally I add it to my sandwichs just to enhance the complexity of the flavors. It think it sucks that I just saw the Street Fighter movie recently... Were the costumes on point? Most definitely. Did the characters do their signature moves? Totally. Did I have a good time watching it? Absolutely. But even through all the good, there still was something missing. A plot that was all over the place. Fighting scenes that were mid at best. Characters that looked the part in the movie but were way different from their video game counterparts. I felt this with the Huevos Benedictos. It looked good presentation-wise, but I shouldn't have to use a sauce to make it good. The dish should be able to stand up on its own. Maybe if the Hollandaise had something special to it. Maybe if the beans were cooked in some fun spices. I don't really know what answer would be. I just know that when I order my Bistek sandwich or any other dish on the menu I know if for some weird reason Sol Food was all out of Pique it would be ok, because their food doesn't need it. This particular morning my benny needed it though. If you are on the fence about the Pan Frances you definitely gotta order that. That was surprisingly my favorite meal out of everything we ate.

Wow, what a great stop in Vacaville going down the road!…read more Our first choice at our destination wouldn't be open yet so ChatGPT found this for us - because it knows us, and especially me. I use it all the time to develop recipes and cook. Everything about this experience was fantastic. My mom, my sister, and I shared three orders. I HAD to have an authentic $14.50 Cubano Sandwich. And it was spot on! Everything was exactly right, including the bread. The $7.20 "baked" Chicken Empanada made from their handmade pastry was also perfect. The pastry was cooked exactly right. We also all really liked the "freshly made" $14.50 Arepa Pabellon, Platanito Maduro, and Batata Dulce. We were there between lunch and dinner so things were pretty quiet and we were served quickly.

La Gua Gua Restaurant offers a great variety of dishes from different Latin American countries,…read moreincluding Guatemala, Peru, Colombia, and Cuba. I really appreciate having so many options to choose from, making it a nice place to visit with family. We've visited several times, usually on Sundays, and my family really enjoys the food. One thing to keep in mind is that the restaurant only offers outdoor seating. Unfortunately, this means you're exposed to flies, and during our most recent visit, there were quite a lot of them, which made the dining experience a little uncomfortable. The food also tends to take a while to come out, especially on Sundays when the restaurant gets pretty busy. From what we've noticed, it seems like they have a small kitchen staff, which may explain the longer wait times. Overall, it's a good spot to enjoy a variety of Latin American flavors with family. My recommendation would be to improve fly control around the dining area and find ways to speed up service during busy hours. Despite these issues, my family enjoys the food, and we appreciate the variety they offer!
