    Carne Asada Quesadilla
    Brian S.

This place as the kids like to say is, "Fire!" Finally able to try it out and we were not disappointed. Some of the best Carne Asada I've had in all of Marin. The portions are massive too. Trust a big guy and try it out!

A super burrito w/so much meat!

This place is a hidden gem. Selfishly I want to keep it a secret for myself but I want them to succeed. The workers are so nice and accommodating to any style burrito you want. For example- they don't have a kids menu but they modified a regular burrito to my kids liking. Also- their burritos are HUGE! The price is right too. I hope more people support this business.

On our way back to San Francisco, we discovered a fantastic spot: Sabor De Mexico in Novato. It was our first visit, and definitely not our last. As soon as we entered, the welcoming atmosphere and friendly service stood out. We tried several of their popular dishes, and everything was truly delicious. The street tacos were especially memorable. I sampled both the carne asada and the lengua, with perfectly balanced flavors. The homemade tortillas made a significant difference. We also shared an order of quesadillas with carne asada, which was very flavorful. They offer both indoor and semi-outdoor seating, and the restaurant is clean and well-maintained. We ordered at the counter, and the food was served to our table. The prices are reasonable considering the quality. It's clear they use fresh, quality ingredients in everything--from the salsa to the expertly cooked meats. If you're searching for a new place for authentic Mexican cuisine, Sabor De Mexico is definitely worth a visit.

    Super Burrito

I went in around 12:50 and the place was empty, should have been the first sign that I wasn't going to enjoy the experience. I sat on the back patio which had lots of flys and was a bit dirty. I got the super burrito and the super nacho's both with carne asada. The food was very under seasoned the asada seemed more like ground beef. The chips for the nachos were over fried and the cheese was that fake cheese. Sorry no way I'll be going back.

Came back for a second visit to this location - nice to see they've expanded into the adjoining space, business was brisk so I suppose they're doing well. I had the burrito - again, and was once again impressed not only with the freshness but with the size of the thing. I could easily have taken half home for another meal, however I wolfed it down greedily, it was really tasty. Service was fast and great, chips were warm, salsas were fresh, price was right, what more could you ask?

Overall a delicious experience! I've been meaning to kick the tires and was in the area so gave it a shot. This location was a couple different businesses over the past few years and was glad to see a new business come in. Upon entering the restaurant, it's got a counter style set up where you order and find a seat. It looks like they are still figuring things out as there is a beer and wine application notice in the door. There is plenty of seating available (probably too much) as there are seating area inside and a covered exterior spot. The menu is on a flatscreen which is typical these days. The monitor next to it was serving up early 90's pop and hip-hop music videos which was kinda funny. The food is very good and full of flavor. I ordered a super burrito and it could probably feed 2. The beans, meat, rice, and cheese all melded together for a delicious mix of flavors and textures. The salsa's were nice as well. There was a red (spicy) and green (medium) which is a good addition to a bite or two of burrito or chips. I hope this place does well and we'll see what the future holds.

    Caldo de Rez

The staff are wonderful. I am working my way through the menu. I have had the Caldo de Rez (beef soup) served with corn tortillas. Think of pot roast but in a soup form with out the gravy. YUM! I've taken home the super burritos as a treat for family. Everything here is a comfort food made to order with fresh ingredients. Lovely ambiance and art, a giant Vicente Fernańdez photo in the establishment.

Decided to try the super vegi burrito again before ruling out this place as a lunch option. I ordered the salsa, guacamole and sour cream on the side, hoping this would take care of the issue of my burrito being cold. I was wrong! The burrito was mostly lettuce on the inside, so it's difficult to make it any warmer. It was also lacking in flavor. The chips and mild salsa were tasty. Given my choice of entree, this clearly isn't the place for me.

    Shrimp and veggie tacos
    Mark K.

The food was average. Nothing really stood out from any other Mexican restaurant in town. They have al pastor as a meat option which is not that common. I had it in a burrito. It was supposed to be a super burrito (regular burrito with guacamole and sour cream). It wasn't. My mother said that her enchiladas were okay. Nothing special. The stand out appears to have been the shrimp and veggie tacos. It deserves 4 stars. Everything else was 3 stars. The guacamole had more tomatoes than avocado. Not the way I like it. I think that this restaurant is very new. They have some things to work out. They overcharged us. They charged us twice for my mother's enchilada combo meal. They have a large space across the parking lot from Pini's hardware. This location can't seem to hold onto a restaurant. They had better try harder or they won't last either. They have covered outdoor dining. It was good to try this place but I probably won't be back.

What great news! After 25 years working at a taco shop in San Jose, Samuel finally opened his own taco shop in South Novato, next to the ACE Hardware store. The best taco shop in town. Excellent service and the best price. Honestly, the best tacos in the county. Very nice people and respectful

Super burrito was a good size!

The one thing I was let down was the amount of chips and salsa given out as we sat down. There were three of us and we received two small bowls of green and red salsa. When I say small, they were the size of the bowl you order fries and they give you ketchup. Now, for the price you pay for Mexican food now a day, I am expecting a little more salsa and chips. I will be coming back, as the food is great, and the people are so nice. Just don't be so frugal on the chips and salsa.

We chose to try a new place, and El Rey caught our attention. We arrived around 7:30, and the restaurant wasn't busy since it was a Sunday evening. Looking at the menu, I was drawn to their ceviche. We decided to start with guacamole and chips, share a ceviche, and have a Quesadilla con Carne Asada. The guacamole was fresh and well-made, the ceviche was exceptionally delicious, and the quesadilla was very well prepared and tasty. Our server was very friendly and helpful with our questions, and we even shared a few good laughs. The service was excellent. El Rey has been a local spot in Novato for many years, family-owned and known for serving traditional Mexican dishes in a welcoming setting. It has built a reputation in the community as a reliable place for a hearty meal, and many locals have been coming here for decades. The restaurant is a standalone building in a shopping center and offers a large seating area. They also have an outdoor seating area, which I imagine would be especially nice on a warm evening. As a first-time visitor, I left impressed. The food, service, and relaxed atmosphere made for a very enjoyable stop on our drive. We would definitely come back again the next time we're in Novato.

We drove around, debating a few different options and decided to pop into Tommy's Salsa. The first thing I noticed was how charming the atmosphere was, including the lighting and warm cozy temperature. It was a chilly evening and absolutely wonderful to walk into this welcoming atmosphere. The young woman who took our order was super sweet and friendly. I ordered the chicken soup with a side of avocado to put on top and my husband had a beer along with tacos. I noticed they were very busy with a lot of people coming in for pickup. We were starting to get nervous because the game was about to begin and our food was taking a long time. even though we had to go ask for our food, worried that we were forgotten. I still did not dock them a star because of how friendly they were and how delicious the food was. Very nice people work here! We enjoyed complementary chips, along with a tasty bean dip, My soup was a generous portion, and the broth was tasty but a bit on the salty side, still, loaded with vegetables and generous portion of chicken: two drumsticks. The squeeze of lime that was provided was the perfect compliment. It would've been nice to have more time and feel relaxed, but we had to rush back for the game. I have a favorite Mexican restaurant in San Rafael however, every time we go there, the bright fluorescent lighting is brutal and it's like eating in a refrigerator . And the people that work there are kind of like robots and don't really seem to care about us. I'm only saying this because yes, the food is important and Tommy's has absolutely delicious food, but it is also about feeling comfortable in the environment. Next time we are in Novato, we will definitely eat here again!

We had a reservation for Father's Day and waited about 10 minutes for a table to open, as it was the busiest I have seen. The table was nice, big enough for the five of us, and the ambiance is always great here as well. We were quickly greeted by our server, Eli, who provided chips and salsas to whet our appetites, and we soon narrowed our focus to the food and drink menus. We ultimately decided on some El Jefe Tacos, a shrimp and crab enchilada, a three-item combo with two chile rellenos and a cheese enchilada with green sauce, a carne asada taco, and the volcanic Molcajete (served in a warm stone bowl with grilled steak, chicken, and prawns. Covered with a red chile, roasted tomato sauce). For libations, we went with a mojito and a new drink - for us at least - the pineapple mezcal mule! The food came in a timely manner, and the molcajete was still bubbling! Hence, the volcano nickname! The mojito was very minty and refreshing, and the pineapple mezcal mule was an acquired taste for some of the group - I enjoyed the smoky earthiness of the mezcal, but it's not your run-of-the-mill tequila, so if you are new to mezcal, be aware of the difference. The food last time was a bit spicy, but this time it was not an issue. Still spicy, but not to the point of being overpowering. Even the salsas were not as extreme. Good for some of us! All the food was delicious, and the three-item combo was great to look at as well. As we say, "the eyes eat first," and indeed my eyes were little piggies that meal! Overall, the service was great, the food great, and the entertainment a perfect background for what would have been just a noisy bunch of chatter. Overall a great Father's Day lunch.

I ordered the tropical pork. I told my daughter that it was a Mexican version of Chinese sweet and sour pork. It has many of the same ingredients. It was very flavorful and came with rice, beans, and plantains. It also came with a nice side salad of mixed greens and balsamic vinaigrette (?). My daughter ordered a combo plate with a veggue burrito and chicken flauta. I tasted both. Good, but didn't really shine. We were both surprised to see broccolli in her burrito. We finally got the chance to do that, and it made us wish we had done it earlier. As we entered the restaurant, I saw the bar with people sitting there, drinking, chatting, and watching football on TV. My first mistaken impression was that this was more of a working man's hangout. But when we went into the dining area, we were seated, and I looked around at the other folks there and overheard some of their conversations, I realized that the place is more of a local favorite. The atmosphere was warm and family-oriented. I saw couples, young and old, and families with children of various ages. Our server stopped by shortly after we sat down, and we received a basket of freshly made chips and salsa, both of which were delicious. I had read about their tasty margaritas but decided against ordering one this time because I was tired and driving home to San Francisco. So we went straight to the main course! I ordered Adobado, a dish I hadn't tried before. Adobado features thin slices of pork tenderloin marinated and grilled in a chipotle-adobado sauce, served with plantains and sour cream. It turned out to be a very satisfying and fulfilling choice, but not enough to prevent me from asking for a flan. Let me tell you about my obsession with flan! I love flan, but to me, a good flan is one that is not too sweet and not overcooked to be too hard. It should be firm enough to not fall apart when served to you, but soft enough to tremble as it is presented! The flan here was perfect! The two guys who worked on the floor were wonderful. They answered our questions while we were ordering and stopped at our table several times afterward to see if we needed anything and to make sure everything was fine. The restaurant has nice decorations. I don't know much about its history in the neighborhood, but it seems to have been there for years. I spent a few minutes looking around at the various drawings on the walls and other decorations around the dining area. It will grab your attention. Overall, this was a pleasant experience. We will stop by there again, and I'll make sure to try their margarita next time!
