I was craving Caldo de res one evening. Went to Sabor de Mexico to give it a try. For $18 I got a bowl it had a few vegetables, uncooked potato watery broth, and a few piece of meat. It did not come with the side of rice as it normally served in traditional Mexican restaurants. The tortillas were from a package and stale. I left there feeling hungry. Completely dissatisfied with all of it. I would not eat their food again. The kitchen was also very dirty as well as the tables outside. Not the flavors of Mexico that I am accustomed to. And I am Mexican and certainly not worth the $ $39. I paid for two very watery soups. read more

On our way back to San Francisco, we discovered a fantastic spot: Sabor De Mexico in Novato. It was our first visit, and definitely not our last. As soon as we entered, the welcoming atmosphere and friendly service stood out. We tried several of their popular dishes, and everything was truly delicious. The street tacos were especially memorable. I sampled both the carne asada and the lengua, with perfectly balanced flavors. The homemade tortillas made a significant difference. We also shared an order of quesadillas with carne asada, which was very flavorful. They offer both indoor and semi-outdoor seating, and the restaurant is clean and well-maintained. We ordered at the counter, and the food was served to our table. The prices are reasonable considering the quality. It's clear they use fresh, quality ingredients in everything--from the salsa to the expertly cooked meats. I went in around 12:50 and the place was empty, should have been the first sign that I wasn't going to enjoy the experience. I sat on the back patio which had lots of flys and was a bit dirty. I got the super burrito and the super nacho's both with carne asada. The food was very under seasoned the asada seemed more like ground beef. The chips for the nachos were over fried and the cheese was that fake cheese. Sorry no way I'll be going back. read more

Celia's in San Rafael for taste and volume, Lucinda's in Strawberry for take out and taste (they have been there 50 years!), San Jose Taqueria in San Rafael for taste and convienience, Mi Pueblo Novato for the Molcajete, and now Sabor De Mexico for the shrimp super. There may be kinda long lines, slow to clear tables, but a killer outside ambience, and who cares when you get that kind food. Damn that was a good buritto. Came back for a second visit to this location - nice to see they've expanded into the adjoining space, business was brisk so I suppose they're doing well. I had the burrito - again, and was once again impressed not only with the freshness but with the size of the thing. I could easily have taken half home for another meal, however I wolfed it down greedily, it was really tasty. Overall a delicious experience! I've been meaning to kick the tires and was in the area so gave it a shot. This location was a couple different businesses over the past few years and was glad to see a new business come in. Upon entering the restaurant, it's got a counter style set up where you order and find a seat. It looks like they are still figuring things out as there is a beer and wine application notice in the door. There is plenty of seating available (probably too much) as there are seating area inside and a covered exterior spot. The menu is on a flatscreen which is typical these days. The monitor next to it was serving up early 90's pop and hip-hop music videos which was kinda funny. The food is very good and full of flavor. I ordered a super burrito and it could probably feed 2. The beans, meat, rice, and cheese all melded together for a delicious mix of flavors and textures. The salsa's were nice as well. There was a red (spicy) and green (medium) which is a good addition to a bite or two of burrito or chips. I hope this place does well and we'll see what the future holds. read more

The staff are wonderful. I am working my way through the menu. I have had the Caldo de Rez (beef soup) served with corn tortillas. Think of pot roast but in a soup form with out the gravy. YUM! I've taken home the super burritos as a treat for family. Everything here is a comfort food made to order with fresh ingredients. The closest in Marin to carrying on the legacy of the late, great San Jose Taqueria that used to be under the freeway in San Rafael. You will walk away happy. The food was average. Nothing really stood out from any other Mexican restaurant in town. They have al pastor as a meat option which is not that common. I had it in a burrito. It was supposed to be a super burrito (regular burrito with guacamole and sour cream). It wasn't. My mother said that her enchiladas were okay. Nothing special. The stand out appears to have been the shrimp and veggie tacos. It deserves 4 stars. Everything else was 3 stars. The guacamole had more tomatoes than avocado. Not the way I like it. I think that this restaurant is very new. They have some things to work out. They overcharged us. They charged us twice for my mother's enchilada combo meal. They have a large space across the parking lot from Pini's hardware. This location can't seem to hold onto a restaurant. They had better try harder or they won't last either. They have covered outdoor dining. It was good to try this place but I probably won't be back. read more

The staff is friendly and has a nice seating area by the road. I always go for an al pastor super burrito and this one hit the spot. My only feedback is the lack of customization. I prefer a spinach tortilla which most places have these days. They also only offer pinto beans which is fine, but I'm a black bean kind of guy. It was still very delicious and enjoyable. Finally got in for lunch since they close early for dinner, 7pm. Friendly fast service and relaxing patio that's covered for the elements. I tried a delicious al pastor tota on a fresh soft roll with all the fixings. Big enough for 2 but I was really hungry to polish it off. The menu is ample with everything you would expect with a few nice surprises like Dorado fish tacos. 5 for $11.95 and whole fried fish for $14.99 when available.. This is a small business with a friendly staff that I would very much like to love, but the food needs serious work. My wife's carne fajitas were badly overcooked, which resulted in them being dry and tasteless. The plate lacked pico de gallo or some other sauce, which might have helped with those problems, but I doubt would truly solve them. My al pastor burrito was dry, but acceptable. However, the tortillas I order with an appetizer guacamole were oddly leathery. While ordered mais, they seem to have a lot of wheat flour in them, and were quite dry. Just not pleasant. I came here in the expectation that it was a sister restaurant of the Sabor de Mejico on Fourth Street in San Rafael, which is not related and has far superior (indeed, delicious) food. read more
