"In the middle of the night Is that your heart you hear Have you reached your breaking point tonight?" {The Moody Blues) It's about the same size as your Cumberland Farms or Pride gas station/convenience stores but........it has ice cream! Let's start with the gas station aspect, and I have to admit it is sure nice to have another gas station option in Bloomfield. Break Point has 4 gas islands with two pumps on each island. Today, Regular gas was $3.199 for both cash and credit purchases. The gasoline area is kind of tight, especially when consumers park in front of the convenience store's side door, so be careful pulling up to, or leaving the pumps. Inside, the store is very neatly stocked, and the personnel were super friendly. We made a beeline to the ice cream counter and perused their 28 flavors of hard scooped ice cream. A small dish (4-ounce) was $5.25. If we had gone for a bigger portion, 6-ounce or 8-ounce would have cost $7.25 or $9.25. I decided on a small dish of their PB Chip Swirl, and my wife asked for some Coconut and Banana in her small dish. I'm not sure where their ice crem comes from, but it was excellent. The Peanut Butter, Coconut and Banana flavors really popped! Bloomfield Break Point has a pretty cool social media footprint and a wonderful logo consisting of a sunglasses-wearing hot dog holding an ice cream cone and a cup of coffee in its itty-bitty hot dog hands. Why does the logo feature a hot dog? Well, Bloomfield Break Point promises to have "café-style eats and signature hot dogs". They haven't been open long enough to get the hot dogs up and running, but it will be interesting to see what that future component looks like. We had a very positive visit today. read more

You'll find them at the end of the spiffy Noble Market and gas station complex on Day Hill Road. There were fifteen flavors available today, and we both ordered the same thing - a $6 single scoop of Bolton Banana Chip on a sugar cone. It was refreshing on an 85 degree day and a nice treat while doing laundry, but there was nothing about it that makes me crave it or want more. I would have been better off grabbing a drink and some trail mix at the convenience store next to the laundromat. I now know that if I do go back, shakes aren't on my list to consider. The gentleman who served me was very polite and friendly. When I asked if they made their ice cream in house, he said yes. However, when I googled the business to learn more about their story, I found a Hartford Courant article stating that they sell Praline's ice cream. Nothing wrong with Praline's, but employees should know a little on the product. I LOVE going to places that make their ice cream in house and was excited to find a spot in Hartford that does it only to be let down in finding out they don't. I would recommend LuLu's in general for just getting some scoops (Praline's ice cream is very good ice cream!). It was not a bad experience by any means. I just don't think they are as great as they could be. In time I'm sure they'll get through the learning pains of being a new business and become an amazing local treasure. But if you can deal with some comforts being absent (nice lighting, cool building, impeccable design), then you are likely in for a good meal. I came for the spring dosa. Dosa are crepe-like South Indian creations that I find best when they are thin, long and crispy. So the ones at Naatiya were a touch thicker than I like, definitely gigantic, and mostly crispy around the edges. However, I should note the thickness was important because Naatiya generally stuffs their dosas as compared to any other Indian restaurant I've been to in the United States. Frankly, they were even more stuffed than the ones I've eaten at home. What is in the stuffing of a spring dosa? Well, I hope you love potatoes because that is going to be the main answer. These potatoes are stir fried in a slightly spicy masala and paired with onions and tomatoes. It's a little more involved than your standard masala dosa. What comes with your dosa? In this case, you get two small sides of coconut chutney and tomato chutney. I would have been thrilled with an extra side of the coconut chutney but didn't ask. Also, you get a bowl of sambar which I think is best described as a traditional spicy vegetable curry prominently featuring Indian cucumber. It's great and I usually pair it with idli (which is also on the menu at Naatiya). I didn't ask for a side of gunpowder (a ground mix of various spices and beans) that I usually use for dosa because I saw that was an entirely different order at Naatiya. That said, I'll probably see if they are willing to provide some of it on a future order as it really adds an entirely new dimension to the dosa experience. TL:DR - you can get dosa here and it's great. Go for casual Indian food.
