I have been coming here off and on since the Utrecht days. Selection is usually pretty good, though the lack of interconnectivity between the physical store's inventory and the Blick website leads me to always call ahead of time to make sure an item is actually there. Giving an online item number usually does the trick but sometimes they have to check in the aisles. It seems recently with my art interests turning a bit to more experimental mediums that it's getting harder to match the things I want from the online store with the in-store inventory, which is a drag. I prefer being able to pick things up in person and examine them, and maybe compare it to similar items, so this is an issue for me. But if you are looking for traditional art supplies, you're going to likely find what you need here. One other gripe is the complexity and inexplicable barricades of the Blick coupons and sales. Every coupon comes with a laundry list of exclusions, ranging from general product types to specific manufacturers and even to other sale items. And with the latter, that means that you can come into the store expecting to use a 20% coupon for something specific, but it won't work because they have some other overly complex offer in place for that particular item that is less valuable than the coupon you have. I wish that they would clean that up, because the level of uncertainty has me often times just looking elsewhere. read more

While I was there I noticed how the clientele and the staff communicated and many were repeat customers so they were known to the staff. It was very welcoming. While in town, thought I'd swing in to see if there was anything I could use for my cards. The store was super organized and clean. I was greeted at the door, that was nice. They had no paper items. It's geared more towards painting. Super bummed since I looked at the web site and it was something they said they carried. Maybe a different location does. Their were employees stalking shelves and de me wandering, never offered help. So if you paint, this is a cool little store, but there isn't much else. read more

I recently had no luck finding a item called many art stoy's in 50 miles from my home. Well I talked to a clerk who knowingly received my cry for help. It was a few minuets before he was closing. He told the product was discontinued. Now you who use a item for 35 yrs I was disabled in my mind it just can't happen. What can I trust with may business? I know you are by now, what is he talking about. Ready for it , a Sol- vent and Thinner,( Bestine) I couldn't get any other answer they are out of business. This young man said it was under a new company named BECONS. So with seconds I found it because of a careing person. Yes I am a fan....now I just need to re establish a work space for my artistic endevors. I wandered their asiles looking, unfortunately I didn't have the time to keep looking or the budget (or the workspace) to take home many of the items I have been looking for to take the swirling images from my head into a more tangable medium. I can see this as being a go to place for me to pick up paints, inks, canvas and clay. I will also have to check out their catalog. This is a pretty cool store! I've recently found my artistic spirit through an old coworker, and I paid a visit to Utrecht one day to pickup some pastels and a sketchbook. They had all kinds of great stuff here, and the prices are very reasonable. The staff was pretty friendly, and helpful. I am not an artist, and I have no idea what I am doing with any of the mediums, but I didn't feel ashamed to ask questions. The location is a bit out of my way since I live in Scottsdale....and we found a store a little closer, Arizona Art Supply. BUT....this store is worth the drive and worth a visit. read more

I have recently started painting and Utrecht is the only art supply store I have been to so I do not have anything to compare it to, just my experience the past few times I have frequented. They have a wide assortment of ALL supplies, I always want everything I see! They do not carry Alkyd paints though FYI. I originally chose Alkyd paint because it is lower in VOC's than other oil paints but as they run out I am going to start using acrylics so this is not really an inconvenience at all. But they DO carry Golden Open Acrylics brand which are "slow drying acrylics" as opposed to the Alkyds which are "fast drying oils" if you happen to be looking for something in that middle ground. They always have a lot of different items on sale and the store clerks are always so friendly and helpful that I definitely see many more trips to Utrecht in my future! read more

Utrecht and I have a complex relationship. The "competitor prices" they display always seem to come from an alternate universe, and merchandise isn't so much organized as stuffed where there's room (which isn't necessarily bad if you're aware of it), but they've got a good selection, friendly employees, and--most importantly--the house brand. The whole reason to shop at Utrecht, catalog or retail, is for Utrecht's house-brand paint. They generally beat competing brands in price handily. Their acrylics are made in the US. Quality in the Artist grade paints is top-notch while the "Studio Series" (which is the most euphemistic and optimistic student grade moniker I've ever seen) ranges, as do most student-grade paints, from decent to mind-blowingly terrible. Skip straight to Artist for difficult colors like yellows if you know what's good for you. This store maintains an excellent supply of acrylic and oil Utrecht paints in both grades in just about every color you could possibly want. They may even carry the full range. Outside of Utrecht-branded paints, mediums, and substrates, though, you're almost certainly going to get better pricing at Arizona Art Supply. And while Utrecht stocks a wide variety of house-brand brushes, almost to the detriment of name brand selection, they're probably the crappiest brushes I've ever used. I'd only buy Utrecht brushes for something that's going to destroy them, like resist or masking fluid. But for paint, gesso, mediums, canvas, or paper? Definitely swing by Utrecht. Pro Tip: Don't even think about shopping here at the start of a semester or near finals. The entire ASU College of Fine Arts--wait, sorry, Michael Crow took that behind a shed; Institute For Design--descends upon Utrecht like a horde of locusts, leaving empty shelves in its wake. read more

When their products are not on sale, they're a bit on the pricey side, however their store is generally inexpensive once their discounts come into play. I love that they have a TON of different sized stretched canvas. They have a ton of supplies you can use too, some out of the ordinary. The nice part is that it's by ASU. That's also the bad part too. I have a feeling that their prices are a bit expensive generally in the off-school season because of the ASU students. So typically I try and avoid going there around those times. However, the best time to buy is when school starts or a new semester starts. read more

The assistant manager, Matt helped me put together art materials for three of Donna Downey's "Inspiration Wednesday" Journal classes. He was so incredibly helpful!! Really enjoyed my shopping experience here. The store is well-organized and has a lot of fun eye candy to look at. The employees were the high point! All three people in the store, at the time I was there, were friendly, answered many questions, and definitely knew their stuff. It is awesome to see real artists running an art supply store because they are passionate and knowledgeable. So glad I stopped in -- previously I had only ordered from this company online and didn't even know they had brick & mortar stores. My favorite part? Testing out watercolor crayons at the front of the store, where they were neatly displayed with quality watercolor papers to play with. Both of the women I spoke to in the shop were so sweet! There were no hard sell techniques. Very personable, clean and well-lit store. It also smelled good in there -- clean with a touch of lavender or some other kind of essential oil. This place is pretty much a staple to the art student community. My only complaint about this location is that it's not all that big and the selection is lacking compared to other locations that I have been to. That said, they have a catalogue (both hard copy and online) that is full of amazing stuff, and you can return stuff from the catalogue in the store. That's a really nice thing to offer. read more

This review is specifically for the Tempe location. About 10 years ago in San Francisco, to receive an Educator Discount Membership, I had to provide my documentation upon signing up. I have spent thousands of dollars on educational supplies at Blick Stores since then. At the Tempe location, they have requested my documentation each time I have been there, even though their records in the store acknowledge that I have provided it previously and that I am entitled to the Educational discount. I'm not sure if I am specifically being targeted or if they do this to all teachers at this satellite location, either way, it's garbage. Additionally, the staff are not nearly as knowledgeable as every other Blick store I have been to, which is about a dozen. I have only been in this Tempe store for five or six visits, yet I have heard "I'm not sure." from the staff there maybe a dozen times. I will not be purchasing anything from this location ever again. With your staff and management in such poor condition, you ruin the excellent reputation of Blick Art Supply. I just want to start by saying that this store is Very nice and has a VERY selection of whatever you would need to be artistic. Although I came into the store at 6:50 with them closing at 7, it is understandable to let the customer know that they are closing in 10 minutes although, BOB the employee there on the other hand decided to pester my entire family, following us around and looking at my mother like she was going to steal something. I have worked retail a few times in my life and I have NEVER pushed someone out of the store like BOB did. We understand you want to get out after a long day, although I don't believe that management would want their employees hounding someone out the door when there was plenty of time for us to find he Acrylic paint and a set of canvases and have 15 minutes to post this review of how terrible this man was to us in the store.
