Don't go to this Blick location, go to the one in Cambridge instead and you'll be much more satisfied. This location is not only smaller and seemingly a bit more limited than the Cambridge location, but more significantly I have found after going to this location a number of times that the employees at this location are always quite condescending and/or rude and I find it difficult to shop here/ask them questions. Comparatively the employees at the Cambridge location are always kind and helpful, which makes a big difference in the shopping experience. Additionally, I have gone to this Fenway location and the store has been closed during regular hours, with only a piece of paper on the door indicating that they've just decided to be closed for the day. read more

I enrolled in an art class and stopped by this Blick location on my way home. This Blick is part of the upscale 401 Park development near Fenway and comes with a parking garage. To get to the garage you have to go down Fullerton St, which was not clear when pulling up to the intersection in front of the store. Remember to get your parking ticket validated before leaving the store. I came into the store with a long list of items I needed for my class. I was able to find everything on my list with some help from a few nearby staff members. They were very helpful and patient with me. A couple of items on my list I had no idea what they were. Their selection is unsurpassed from a variety of paints to assorted sketch and drawing pad sizes, plus the prices are reasonable. read more

Would be awesome not to have an employee yell at you at full volume for having the audacity to touch the spray paint for 1 millisecond (I wasn't even planning on removing it off the wall to buy; I was just comparing the colors to make my decision). Would also be awesome not to have the person at the register ask you if you wanted a bag 10 billion times, even though you already said yes every time. Was rushing around to find an art supply shop nearby to do a last-minute cap decoration for my graduation and I found this Blick. I walked in and everyone was so kind. They noticed I was running around frantically and helped me find the right materials for what I needed (including walking me through the right kind of glue that would work for fabric and what paint to use). This place has a great selection of materials, although it tends to cater to the students so most of the products are not of the absolute highest quality. That being said, you will still find nicer brands like Windsor Newton. I don't really recommend their own Dick Blick brand for oil paint because it's really not a great quality. However, it is the cheapest if you're in a pinch. There are plenty of arts and craft materials here as well, but since it's an art store you might find it to be a bit expensive. If you use art supplies regularly it's definitely worth becoming a Dick Preferred member since it's free and you get web matched for lower prices. read more

For haloween I came up with the last minute idea of dressing as Richard Harrow, so I wanted to make a mask - but didn't have a lot of time to do paper-mache. The staff helped me find one of the few remaining masks, but it had weird lines in it. Next came the paste to cover the lines and smooth out the mask. This was followed by a quick tutorial on blending paints to get optimal skin tones. Going in as a complete novice - I was appreciative that I wasn't talked down to, and they seemed happy to help. The staff here was wonderfully helpful. I went in for some paper to back a piece of art I was putting into an Ikea frame and they cut it to the size I needed. I was looking for an adjustable stretcher for needlepoint and didn't find it, but they had some great options that could have worked. Materials for real artists, crafts people, and kids. Love this art store! There are so many interesting craft and art ideas that I could spend an hour in hear getting my creative juices flowing. We initially came in for alcohol paint. They had a variety of colors and the cashier was kind enough to let us know that they can also make a special order if we didn't find what we needed. The staff were friendly and walked us over to the items we were looking for rather than just telling us it was a rack in aisle whatever. Bizarre Pricing Policy Blick is probably unique among retailers in their desire that in-store customers pay as much as online shoppers - including the cost of SHIPPING. To quote them, "This Preferred Customer Web Match Rebate price match benefit makes it so that, when a Preferred Customer checks out in-store, the total price of their collective items (after discounts, before tax) is automatically compared to what they would've paid if they bought the same cart of materials on our website (after discounts and shipping is factored in, before tax.) If this comparison shows that you would have paid less for all of these materials online (with shipping included) we will give you the lower online price in-store via an instant web match rebate at checkout . . . " I bought three items that totaled $14.12 online, but I was charged $22.74. My Web Match Rebate was 19 cents - whoopie! My major objection is that their web site makes it appear that the online price is what you will be charged in the store. They do have a disclaimer, but it has quite low visibility, and likely will not show on the screen while you are checking on prices. In store customer service is very good, but I'll be heading to Artist & Craftsman in Central Square from now on. read more

I called Blick in Boston Landmark Center, MA Saturday afternoon to inquire for a vinyl gold chrome roll or sheet that can be used on plastic. An associate told me that they had the product available and I can come anytime. I drove into Boston, even in the thunderstorm, to get the product I inquired about. When I arrived, another associate told me with hesitation that the associate I spoke on the phone made a mistake and they did not have the product. Another associate, Jasper, helped me look for spray paint as an alternative option. He was not very knowledgeable of the products and kept asking another associate for their input. Jasper told me that the store was 20% off and I would receive 20% my purchase today. When I went to check out for the Montana "gold chrome" and "super gloss" spray paint listed for 15% off, he told me that I cannot have the 20% off. He said the discount for the paint already exceeded the 20% which did not make sense at all. I used the gold chrome product, and I was happy with that purchase. However, the super gloss varnish I was shown did not have any glossy effect at all. If anything it made it more matte, giving the opposite effect I was going for. Please hire associates that are knowledgable of your products and policies in the future. Although this place seems like it has a lot of art supplies, I would not recommend this place to people due to the lack of service and unknowledgeable associates. read more

So really it's Dick Blick Art Store. Yes - that was his name. Like an unfortunate Jack Black, here comes Dick Blick. Could've been worse I guess - I'm thinking Dick Black. Anyway, I'm procrastinating, time to review this place... So the selection is pretty extensive and the shop is nicely laid out, modern and full of natural light but I still prefer the art supply stores at Central Square. The canvases at Blick have never felt right and I object to things like the 'please check in any bags you have before you shop' rule and the incessant asking of whether you are a Blick member whenever you buy anything even if it costs less than a dollar. Come here to shop if you have a big list of things for your project that you want to find quickly and then load up into your car. Head to Central Square's shops if you want to discover cool bargains and rummage around through art supplies you never would've dreamed of. read more

Every time I go in here, I wish I had taken more art classes. They have tons of art stuff, and I can't even begin to know what to do with some of it, even though it all looks awesome. This store puts me in the same giddy state as office supply stores, but for art. I once bought some fabric paints and sequins in this store, and made a fabulous Halloween costume using them. However, that trip was ruined for me by the haughty and rude guy at the register with gigantic gauges in his ears, who, when I asked if they carried felt, informed me that "We are NOT a craft store." and then told another employee within my earshot. "Why do people always come in here thinking we're a craft store?" He acted like the mere mention of felt would contaminate their beautiful "real" art supplies for "real" artists. I avoided the store for years until yesterday, when I went in there with my boyfriend, who was looking for a poster tube because he's one of those science-y types who has to carry around gigantic glossy posters of his experiments. The store had an even bigger selection than the last time I was in there, but the service was still the same. The first girl we asked for help had an attitude and sent us to the wrong part of the store. The second guy we asked was very helpful and polite, and escorted us to the correct aisle. Another problem with the store is that the lighting was so dark, I couldn't see the merchandise well, no less tell what color it was. The green poster tube my boyfriend bought turned out to be that weird electric-yellow-lime-green-deranged-urine color once we brought it into proper light. Sucks for him! I have no idea how an artist who absolutely needs to know what color their paints/pencils/pastels are would be able to make a selection in that lighting. I did like the cute knicknacks like pins, erasers, and reusable shopping bags near the register. I'm thinking of going back around Christmas to get stocking stuffers, if I can see where they keep them and the cashier feels like ringing me up. UPDATE: 3/8/2012: Blick now sells felt, yarn, and has a "craft corner." I laugh ever time I see them. read more

My nightmare/dream has finally come true: Blick now boasts a robust selection of Copic sets and accessories in addition to individual markers. My soul rejoices; my wallet weeps. (If you know Copics, you know why.) I can find things at this Blick that I find nowhere else in Boston, so this is my number one place for art supplies even given the relatively high prices. The range of products is both broad and deep: whether I'm working on costume accessories or coloring a pencil sketch, there's something here that will help me get it done. Lots of fun accessories and tchotchkes plus a wide-open layout means browsing is fun even when I'm not looking for something specific. If money is a concern, come to Blick for your specialist tools, and shop around for basics. But if you've got any kind of bug for art, even if you're a beginner or a total dilettante, you can't miss this place. read more

Great selection of materials, especially in the painting/drawing department. Their prices, too, are the best in the Boston area-if you do not own a car. They also have the best selection of hardware and canvas for stretching your own canvases. BUT: I don't shop here out of choice, but out of necessity, as most independent art supply stores in the Boston area have shut down. The staff is awful! If these kids-all of them college students-are being paid more than minimum wage, I would be absolutely shocked. I'm not even sure if they're art school students, because if I have any sort of question, they usually have no idea what anything is, how to use it, or whether they have it. Granted, it's a big store, but everyone is extraordinarily apathetic and clueless. Be prepared to sit in line for ten minutes every time you buy something here. Blick is plain and simple the supply store for arts equipment. Nobody does it better though sometimes I wish someone would. Everything from pricing to selection keeps them at the top of the list for supplies. There are plenty of other alternatives around the city and a number of them I really like but I still end up making the occasional rounds back to Blick. Oddly enough I've never really gotten a lot of help when I am shopping through the aisles but the staff is nice and friendly when I go to get rung up. I'd say still support your local store and if you need help or advice this may not be the best choice. I love this place. I will get a discount as soon as I get my Mass Art Student ID (I'm taking a drawing course for Continuing Education) It has a sweet selection of paint, canvases, markers, pens, pencils, paper... pretty much everything I use to draw and create art. There is a whole lot more to look through, like portfolios/cases/bags (which are kind of expensive), frames, books (I bought the New Artist Manual - it's pretty sweet, but a big hefty book to carry around), and even a children's section if you want to buy some gifts for that little artist kid/niece/nephew you have... anyway, this place is awesome. I used to shop here back when it was the Art Store before Blick took over. They actually had something called "customer service" back then. Now the store is just a bunch of artsy, arrogant, punked-out kids hanging out. The management is non-existent. I stopped in last week to pick up some supplies for work and must have been in the store for over an hour and no one said as much as hello to me. As always, the selection is overwhelming. I could definitely go broke in here. If you are creative, or even just pretend to be so, this is your supply store. I've never walked out of there without spending moola - but last night i became a member of their Preferred Customer program - which I think is free if you are a teacher or student - but it cost us $10. But we get 10% off, so it practically paid for itself. Check out the large sheets of papers, they have a nice selection. I got a great sheet of wrapping paper that is a copy of an antique map of NYC. Part of me just wants to put it up on the wall... NOTE: Park on the first level for ease of entrance. They will validate your parking and the first hour is free. read more

Right when I was starting to think there were no amazing perks of Boston, I found Blick. I have been wanting to stop in here for so long now, however, the parking garage is a complete mess and to be honest, even though I heard it was great, its location doesn't appeal. Since I live in the suburbs, any place that is in Boston is a excursion and most of the time, I'd rather just go to a suburban spot, and not deal with traffic, lots of people, and no parking areas. Since I was in the area yesterday I stopped in to the amazing store. Sadly, I found out the only Blick stores in the area are here, Cambridge, and another in Boston on Massachusetts Ave. BLICK is a great store, and if I were to be in the area again, I would definitely stop back, heck I might even make a special trip back to the Fenway area just to visit. YES, it's THAT great. Even though I love art stores like Michaels, this really doesn't compare. It's just so much more vast and has so much more to offer for the true art-LOVER! Selection is vast and much larger and different than other places like Michaels or AC Moore. They have an expanded paint selection and tons of great books, kid projects, portfolios, framing, and unique and different art stuff. There isn't nearly as many useless items like at Michaels. Staff are friendly, and for being in this location, the store is humongous. Never too busy, either! Parking is available in the parking garage for the Landmark Shopping Center (where it is located). The garage is sort of messed up, but it works. I prefer parking at the Van Ness garage on Ross Way and walking over. There is a front entrance on Brookline Avenue and a back entrance into the garage. Overall, great art store. Would be 5 stars if they had any suburban locations. 5 stars. read more

Blick is a fortress of nearly everything you could every need to make something paint-splattered, inky, penciled, sculpted, or taught. Located in the refurbished section of the Fenway T stop and Landmark Center, this art store is clean and awesome. Kids these day don't know how good they have it. A short decade ago, this area was dirty and abandoned. Now you have restaurants, stores, a movie theater, and even condos. It's pretty amazing. I'm pretty sure that if you're an art student or teacher, you get a free membership and therefore earn 10% your purchases. The rest of us have to pay for the privilege, though we can earn that money back quickly. Wait for sales to get anything framed here, it's uber-expensive. Paint on, brethren! read more

Holy Overwhelming. Tons of crafting supplies for kids, adults, adults who act like kids, artists, all sorts of people. They have a great artisan paper selection, silk screening kids, paint, brushes, blah blah blah. The store is huge and a touch hard to navigate, but the staff is helpful and funny as hell. I mean, I like Pearl, but I can't deny that I liked them a lot more when my friends worked there and I didn't feel like I was committing a major offense asking for help, so now I think I'm pretty sold on Blick, even though it's nowhere near as convenient for me to get to and it's a chain, which always makes me a little cranky. read more

The service here is the best! I've gone here afternoons on week days when they don't have too many customers, and the staff has been really helpful. I've always left here happily, and the staff do their best to get you what you're looking for. They their customers seriously as artists. They actually want to help you find exactly what you're looking for, so that you can get the results you want. I can remember two distinct occassions where staff members took the effort to explain details about their products, so I could understand the pros and cons, and they also described how each option had performed in their own experience. Compared to Pearl in Central Square, which has a much more each-artist-for-himself attitude, I'd take the warm help of Blick's staff any day. The student discount rocks and their selection is pretty good. But what sets this place high above anywhere else is their customer service. Maybe its because the staff members are student-artists themselves. It's rare that a store actually tries to be on your side. I hope it's something that doesn't change. read more
