When I was looking for a BBQ company to cater my 60th birthday party, I made the trip to Winthrop to check out the chow at Blackstrap. We loved it. The food was great. The service was excellent. I love this place. The vibe is awesome food is SO good but tonight my waitress (as I sit here typing this) has been ignoring us for about 40 minutes now. I had to ask someone else for another round of drinks for the table as our waitress was sitting against the POS screen staring into space. This is really aggravating. Now this is what I am talking about! Give me heaping helpings of spectacularly flavored BBQ food at an amazing price AND then give me a discount on top of that? I don't care how far of a drive this place is from me, I will definitely keep coming back (which is saying something for me). While the facilities are small, they are nicely decorated and the menu written on the chalkboard just adds to the feel. Usually I complain about a small menu, but the three times that I have been here so far, I have gotten different items and I have not been disappointed. The last time I visited, I ordered the pulled pork, brisket, house slaw, and mashed potato. Everything was done right (per usual). The pork was tender and spicy with great flavor, the brisket was slightly charred on the outside and juicy, the slaw had a nice savory flavor, and the mashed potatoes reminded me of Grandma (no seriously). My son and I came into blackstrap BBQ yesterday evening for dinner, I have ordered take out from there before but we decided to eat there. I was already a fan of their great food, but after the awesome hospitality and service I am a fan of them now too! Keep in mind I am not referring to a server or waiter, the man from the kitchen who brought the food out and the man from the counter brought us extra sauces, utensils and kept asking if we needed anything else.! I was born in Texas and have lived all over the south and the Midwest and I love good BBQ, blackstrap is by far the best I've had in the entire northeast !! Yummers! I created a yelp account just to write a review and support these guys!!! Had dinner here on a Saturday night with my husband, two young children and some close friends. The staff we very attentive and friendly. I had the dry rub ribs with mashed potatoes and baked beans. Everything is MADE FROM SCRATCH and tastes wonderful. I shared the mashed potatoes and baked beans with my 10-month old. My husband had the Texas brisket, sweet potato salad and collard greens. Again everything was very tasty. Lastly, my 2-year old had the ribs and Mac n cheese and she ate well which means she really liked the food. Definitely a place we will return to if not to dine in for take out. The smell of smoked meat just wafts into the dining room which is amazing. So we left smelling of BBQ but it was well worth it. Great job guys!! read more

Came here for a bbq sandwich and a drink. I ordered a habenero mule and a pulled pork sandwich. The drink was nice but the sandwich was not. As I was taking a bite of my pulled pork sandwich I noticed some mold on the bread. I immediately notified the bartender who took it back and told me I would not be charged for it. I thought ok that's cool. Later on I got my bill and noticed I was charged for the sandwich. I asked the bartender and he rudely replied that he never said that. Anyways I paid for the sandwich and will probably never come here again. Makes me think that if the bread is moldy what else here is out of date. read more

First the service and staff are very friendly and exceptional. Appetizers were good, fried pickles had a good better, their shrimp wontons had excellent flavor, and their chili was very meaty and tasty. All the food came out piping hot and fresh. Their Memphis ribs were above average, their pulled pork was tender, and the brisket had a nice smoky flavor. My only complaint was their various sauces, but they make them in house which I can respect. Definitely would return and recommend. read more

AMAZING! We had Blackstrap BBQ cater our daughters graduation party. They did a 60 lb pig roast for us that left our guests raving!! They wheeled their La Caja into our yard and it was incredible. But, Blackstrap had me intrigued & the fiance wanted to check it out so, I stopped in and brought the fam. Everyone agreed, DELICIOUS. This place is totally legit!!!!! Get in your car and start driving towards Winthrop. Do not pass GO. Do not collect $200. Just go to Blackstrap BBQ. It's the Boardwalk of Boston-area BBQ. Definitely not Baltic Avenue. On a recent Saturday night visit, the neighborhood was quiet and peaceful. We found there was plenty of street parking in the area. There were two small tables outside along the sidewalk, while inside there were a few picnic tables for diners. A roll of paper towels represents your napkins. The menu is written on the blackboard on the left wall when you walk in. There are a lot of choices to make, and we were lucky enough to have a Blackstrap regular give us the rundown on his favorites as we were perusing the menu. We decided to start with an order of fried pickles. Unfortunately, by the time we got to the restaurant, they had already sold out of the corn fritters. Have to try it next time, and of course there will be a next time. We each ordered smoked chicken as our meat, while taking up our fellow diner's suggestion of the sweet potato salad. My friend got the bacon and corn salad as his second side, while I opted for mac and cheese. The establishment does not have a liquor license, which was fine by me since I was driving. We paid for the meal at the counter, including drinks and a starter it was $36. Inside the restaurant is a counter with plastic silverware, wet naps, and a wide variety of sauces. You've got sweet BBQ, a variety of hotter sauces, a NC and also a SC sauce to boot. There are small cups that you can pour the sauce into and bring back to your table, so may as well sample away! A few minutes later on the staff members brought our fried pickles out. It was a very generous portion and they were quite tasty. A few minutes later, two closed Styrofoam containers come out and we are in business. The gentleman who instructed us to order the sweet potato salad did not lead us astray. Also, fellow yelpers have given big props to the salad as well and justifiably so! It's a great riff on the traditional potato salad. The mac and cheese was quite tasty. A few of the other Boston area BBQ joints have disappointed me in this side department, I was happy to have some creamy cheesy mac and cheese (you can also get it with some chili slathered on top as well). I stole a bite of my friend's bacon and corn salad and was impressed with that as well. Additionally, you get a piece of cornbread, which I liked, though it is on the sweeter side. It ended up being more food than we could eat, but leftovers went home and the good news is that the containers were already in our possession, which was fantastic. It's a good thing I don't live in Winthrop, otherwise I'd be here WAAAAAYYYY too often. I'm jealous of those who live so close to this place! read more

The ambience is nice: somewhat funky, quaint, and a little southern. I had the brisket, double burnt ends, chili mac & cheese, and sweet potato salad. I highly recommend the burnt ends, but i thought the brisket was a little too bland. Good brisket is brisket that can be eaten by itself without any condiments, this brisket was not at that level. Speaking of condiments the bbq sauce was pretty subpar. In addition, when I received my chili mac & cheese it was too tepid, kind of gross actually. One of my first and now best bbq place in Boston. The burnt ends and slow cooked brisket holds up to some of the top bbq places I'm country. 5 stars for this. I am a big fan of BBQ and so I was happy to find out that Winthrop was getting a BBQ joint. I got the pulled pork plate and was impressed. They had 3 types of sauce including the North Carolina vinegar sauce which I personally love. They also had a traditional BBQ sauce as we a a hot bbq sauce. It would be GREAT if the had sweet tea there. Then and only then would I give this place 5 stars. It is also a tad bit expensive. I think I paid 13 dollars and feel like it was worth 10. The Phantom Gourmet on TV recommended this place so I suggested it to my friends. Worst dinning experience I ever had. Three of us ordered the pulled pork sandwich. It had an apple cider vinegar taste to it. None of us took more than two bites. The music was so loud we couldn't hear each other at the table. I would give this place 1 star based on the food. The drinks here is what saved it. Portions are slim and food was dry. I've come here three times and at the point wont be going again. Had Blackstrap BBQ for my son's graduation party. They were fantastic! The food was the bomb and everyone could not stop commenting on how delicious it was. Kate helped me with the ordering (and 100 other questions I had). We had ribs, pulled pork (our personal favorite), brisket, corn, cornbread and mac and cheese. Outstanding! This would have been 1.5 stars if possible. Here's the rundown: Fried pickles: pretty good Fried green tomatoes: good Downhill from there. Pork dry ribs: fatty and not flavorful, despite a large amount of rub burnt on the outside. Burnt ends: soooooo fatty. Drenched in BBQ sauce. Just not enjoyable to us. Mac n' Cheese: very southern (which isn't bad) but if you like creamy Mac n' cheese this ain't it. Oily, crunchy from the oven, lacking seasoning and flavor. Beans: molassesy but not sweet at all. Tasted burnt. Cole slaw: cabbage, carrots, and mayo.... lacked vinegar and sugar. No zing. Spicy Asian slaw: same as above. Not spicy at all. Then after all of that we ordered a slice of the peach pie that our waiter told us about while we were eating: "just wanted to let you know, peach pie just came out of the oven that (girl's name I don't recall) made. It looks great just so you know. I felt cheated when the "pie" came out. It was diced peach in a pastry cup with a glop of whipped cream. It was dry. It wasn't very sweet or anything like what you love about peach pie. No good. We were so disappointed with this place. We had high expectations from the reviews and The East Coast Grill ties (which we love). But this was awful. We'll definitely go back to Redbones... so much for trying someplace new.... read more

My family enjoyed a meal at BSBBQ and we will be back. We got a little of everything and nothing disappointed. The mac and cheese was delicious -- the fritters and the onion jelly were yummy. The rib I managed to get out of my son's hands was tender and had good flavor. I ordered the Texas brisket and the pulled pork. I think I liked the brisket a little bit better than the pork only because I'm not as used to a vinegar-based pork. Regardless, both were delicious. Next time, I want to try the pulled chicken. Stopped in for the first time earlier this week. First - the smell, omg, I hope my jacket smelled like that smoky goodness when I left (is that weird?) Mouthwatering meaty scents pervade the air while you wait, mmm mmm good. My boyfriend and I split a triple meat plate, and got the shredded BBQ chicken, dry rub pork ribs, and the Texas Brisket. The brisket was delicious on its own, and the bbq chicken was moist and flavorful. The ribs were on the peppery side for me and the fatty side for my boyfriend, but might be good for others' tastes. The sides lost this place one star - we had the bbq sweet potato salad and the mac and cheese. Neither of us were a fan of the bbq sweet potato salad, sounded better than it tasted, and the best I can say for the mac and cheese is 'eh.' We also ordered a side of fried pickles that were crispy and good. The other star lost was for attention to detail. We ordered it to go, and then had to wait for them to pack it up when they served it as dine-in instead. They also forgot to give us the cornbread that comes with the meal, which is a pretty egregious error for a BBQ plate staple. I'll give this place a second chance because the meats were really good, but I'd expect a little better meal/experience to come back after that. read more

Overall, a great experience. Good service, prompt serving time... good showing all around. Being a professional cook, and having been a chef myself in the past, I'm going to say the type of stuff that I'd want people to tell me if I opened up a new place. To potential customers reading this review, please know that it's fantastic and 90% of my criticism is stuff that would simply take it from 'excellent' to 'perfect' in my opinion... and for a new business to start out at 'excellent' is pretty impressive... I know that I never have ;-) Firstly, let me say that the ribs were FANTASTIC! The dry rub crust is outstanding, they had a nice smoke ring, no par-cooked mushiness as is the case with some places around here, and they were juicy. To the person who was complaining about the amount of rub: LOTS of memphis style ribs have a ton of rub. If it's formulated in such a way that the smokey pork stands up to it (and it does) then what's the problem? It's totally appropriate for the style and the quality of the execution was WAY better than anything that I've gotten at blue ribbon (in 10+ visits). The cornbread isn't gray as one person said, it's dark (and tasty, though I've got a hard time not saving room for the 'que). It's not completely typical cornbread. The red beans and rice was tasty and well seasoned but I expected a bit more richness from some tasso ham or sausage at a BBQ place. Are they vegetarian? You may want to consider putting that on the menu. Many vegetarians might not even think to ask if they are because they traditionally aren't, and many carnivores looking to stuff their gaping maws full of meat and rich sides might order something heftier. The mac and cheese was fantastic. Not dry, not soup, very present cheese flavor. Also got a side of chili-mac. It's nitpicky, but there seemed to be some water that dripped into the bottom of the container before the mac was scooped in (condensation from a tray lid maybe?), which kind of watered down the cheese sauce for the last 20% or so of the dish. It didn't detract much from the overall experience. Absolutely not something that would prevent me from ordering it again... though I may want a full order of chili and a full order of mac. Love the big chunks of meat in the chili and the flavor was seriously on-point. The flavor of the pulled pork was very very good, and I wouldn't say it's a fault, but it's my (once again, super nitpicky) *personal opinion* that unless it's in a sandwich, a place shouldn't put vinegar on pulled pork (especially when it's take out) as it's dished out or before it's held because it really only takes a couple minutes for a strong vinegar to wash out a lot of the rich velvety gelatin goodness and dilute the clean smokey pork flavor. You certainly can't argue with the beneficial effect of vinegar on pulled pork, but to me that's something that should be done *immediately* before you eat it. A little 1oz sample cup of your vinegar sauce in the container would have been a welcome replacement... but once again... it was really good, it's just my opinion. The *only* thing that was a notable disappointment for me was the brisket. It had great flavor but they gave me a fairly dry end piece. I'd have ordered burnt ends if that's what I was looking for. It was also way too hot, I'd estimate over 200F all the way through the slices, as if it was either held WAY too hot (though it didn't seem like it, I imagine it would have been *jerky dry* if held at that temp for any amount of time, and it certainly was not **that** dry)... it seemed to me that it was just heated WAY too much, seemingly in "the fish oven" if you know what I mean (but I certainly could be wrong. I just can't imagine that the texture wouldn't have been a lot different on the outside if it was heated to that internal temperature using conventional means. You know what I'm trying to say here. ) If you need to sub something out, just let me know. I'd much rather be disappointed at the counter when I need to get something else, even a couple minutes after I've giving my order, than be disappointed when I'm putting the food in my mouth. I completely understand that this is the 'whoops, s__t happens' type of kink that will get worked out as time goes on as long as there are people in back that care about the food, and there clearly are. I'm totally going to be back though and I'm going to try the brisket again because given the quality of the other things that I got, I really can't imagine that this was the way it's usually served, and I want to see it at its best. Perhaps it was what we ordered, but um, wow, was it bad. First off: sweet potato fries did not appear to be fried, they were just large chunks of sweet potato that were burnt and covered in unpleasant tasting oil. Not crispy, not darkened in a good way. Incredibly bitter and awful. Everything pretzel was like stale street vendor pretzels. Too hard, too boiled, too old. Pulled chicken sandwich was disgusting. The chicken was hard, and the entire point of pulled chicken is that it's so tender that it falls apart. The flavor was more like chicken masala than barbecue. Not smokey, not molasses-y, not garlicky, more like garam masala, which is fine and all but just not barbecue. It didn't work. I didn't bother with the mac n cheese, it looked disgusting, but even the Diet Coke was bad. The burnt ends were okay. Throw in that the place smelled like urine, there was no toilet paper in the restroom, and I just can't recommend going. That said: there was no wait. read more

How does anyone think this place is good? I ate their twice just to be sure it was as bad as it tasted because of all the positive reviews. I ate both times with a couple people who all agreed it was a sorry attempt at BBQ. The ribs were dry and I get ribs that are dry rubbed and not sauced. Dry rub needs to have more than just salt and pepper so the bark tastes like more than salt and pepper. Brown sugar, paprika, chilli powder, cayenne, onion powder and garlic powder are basic ingredients in a dry rub. It didn't taste like anything was in there. M&M ribs are a 1000 times better. read more
