The ribs are fabulous! No question. They are as good as any I've tasted anywhere! Juicy, meaty, so flavorful. Perfect, I'd say! The green beans are fabulous, too. Fresh and perfectly cooked. I think the mashed potatoes must be fabulous fresh, but mine were heated over because they were prepared before I arrived, so I tasted that heated-over taste. But! They were very good; real potatoes, which you almost never can find anymore, and lots of butter! I might change that myself; a little less butter and a little more milk or cream. The thing I found disappointing was the fried chicken. I went to the restaurant to try the ribs because I'm looking for ribs to serve at a dinner party and I'm on the hunt, but I had to try the chicken! You may like it; I think my objection is a personal taste thing, but ..... The coating on the chicken tastes like it was poured out of a spice-blend like Montreal Steak seasoning or the Kirkland Signature Organic No-Salt seasoning, or Lawrey's Seasoning, or the seasoning packet from Good Seasons Zesty salad dressing packets - I know I've tasted it before, but I can't remember which it is. It was too too much! As I said above; it tasted like it was poured into bowl from the package and the chicken was dredged in it. The flavor may be great if it were toned down a little, like starting with flour and adding the seasoning blend to the flour? Starting with half and half of each would be an improvement, but I would go with a 3 to 1 ratio of flour to mix. Other than that, I am definitely going to order the ribs for my dinner! As it was, I used the sauce that came with the ribs to dip my chicken in; that sauce is out of this world!!!!! And the two gentlemen who helped me were terrific! I had the ribs last night and they were quite meaty and fair to good on flavor for being in the NE. Low marks for single sauce offering and served on the plate w/o a spoon! Customer care is not a focus it seems. The spicy coleslaw was very good and the black beans were good but would have been better had they simmered for another hour or two. The music playing in the background was much much too loud and not in keeping with anything I've every associated with BBQ. Frankly it was horrendous!! As noted by many, the service was just plain awful. The female bartender had to be one of the worst I've ever encountered. After serving me a wonderful, on tap Hazy IPA, she went to talk to a coupe of friends and ignored me and all other patrons for the entire time I was there. Another fellow who may be one of the owners took my order and served the food but that clearly did not seem to be his intended role. What a great restaurant/bar in Winthrop! We tried dang near everything on the menu. Service was great. Beer selection great. The meat was a little on the dry side for me, but flavor was incredible. Plenty of sauces to choose from. Definitely will return next time I'm in Winthrop. I will say I'm a little bummed they don't carry crowlers from the brewery across the way, but I don't mind making 2 stops. read more

Ordered to go from here on Saturday. The only reason why I would give this one star is for the decent beans they served. We got the 3 meat combo with ribs, brisket, and sausage. I've been to a bunch of BBQ places and this is the first time I've ever seen brisket cut into cubes. Gave it to my dogs. Ribs were 4/10. Sausage tasted like it was store bought Hillshire Farm. Burger was disappointing so we tossed it. Mac and Cheese was dry and sale. Cornbread was cold and stale. Extremely disappointed with the overpriced meal. Dogs enjoyed it so least we didn't waste food. I would recommend taking a drive to Peabody to go to Tennessee's Real BBQ 12/10 there. read more

Aside from the brisket and the mashed potatoes, the Mac & cheese was cold and horrific. It was literally from a box. The worst part is it was cold. The jerk chicken was dry aside from the skin, which had a dry seasoning on it, it was unappetizing. The cornbread was cold and dry. The setting was pub bar style. Went here on a Tuesday night to grab some dinner after hearing that it was one of the best places in New England for BBQ. We were surprised how busy it was, but shortly found out that it was open mic night. Kudos to the man who runs it, he had a great voice and made dinner pretty fun! Our only issue was that there were that many tables for groups of 5, so we ended up sitting right in front of the sound system. Given the size of the group, we ended up trying out most of the meats and even got one of the specials, which was a corn dog with fries and beer mustard. The corn dog got great reviews and the fries were nice and crisp on the outside, yet soft in the center. Their fryer is definitely at the correct temp. We also got a chicken taco with no onions, however when it came out there were onions, and a piece of buttermilk fried chicken. The breading and fry were pretty good on the chicken, but there wasn't much chicken to it. As for the meats and sides, we tried the smoked crispy jerk chicken, shredded bbq chicken, north carolina pulled pork, texas brisket, spicy asian coleslaw, bbq sweet potato salad, mac & cheese, and collard greens. The meat favorites were the pulled pork and brisket. Both were very flavorful, and the pork came with a bbq sauce that paired nicely. The chicken was also good, but a much different flavor than expected. Of the sides, the collard greens were a great surprise, flavorful and not overly wilted. The spicy slaw had a nice kick that paired well with the meats and the sweet potato also had a great blend of spices. The let down was the mac & cheese, nothing super interesting about it. I would say go with a different side. Our other let down was the cornbread that came with the bbq plates. The flavor was decent, but it was very dry and crumbled. Decent for a topping on something, but not to eat on its own. I probably could have just gotten the meat on a sandwich instead and skipped the cornbread. Overall, decent place with pretty good meat. The waitresses were pretty friendly, but you could also tell that it had been a long weekend for them and service took a little bit of time. It was fine since it was open mic night, but I wouldn't suggest going there if you're in a hurry. Or you could just order pick-up, which may be the way to go. read more

The seasoning of the dry rub ribs stay with your tongue for a very long time. I never dined inside but it looks like quite the spot to hang out. With a cool looking bar and a dark decor. Went there 1 night with 4 people sat at the bar , 2 of my friends wore feeling good after afternoon in Boston , bartender proceeded to over serve them. I'm really not sure how this place can possibly have 4 stars. The food was dry and bad, most of the menu items were not available, and there was a hair in my beans. We weren't sure what we wanted to drink at first and we needed a minute to look at the menu as we just sat down. After asking for a second to think the waiter must have misheard and was waiting for our order so we just ordered a scorpion bowl to start off. Regular scorpion bowl presentation, big bowl with a flame in the middle. It was a fairly good amount for 2 people but that's probably because there was no alcohol in it. Our bowl was also broken at the bottom, which is fine stuff happens. Also my friend tried to order the "Maine beer" which was on the list of beers that are "ALWAYS ON TAP" and it wasn't available so he got something else. He also said there weren't good descriptions of the beers on the menu, whether they were IPA or anything, just names. For food we started with the "spicy" buttermilk fried chicken. It was not spicy at all I even confirmed that this was supposed to be the spicy chicken and they said it was. The crunch on the chicken was good but I was really looking for spice. For the main meal I got the 2 meats BBQ platter with jerk chicken, Texas brisket, baked beans, and mac and cheese, with a single rib. As soon as I saw the mac and cheese I knew that the meal was going to be bad. The first thing I tried was the rib, which was dry. Then the jerk chicken, also dry. The mac and cheese was somehow greasy but also dry and flavorless. It was clearly sitting under a heat lamp as many pieces in it looked burnt. I was going to try the baked beans next but then I found a hair in them. I didn't even try the brisket, the hairy beans and greasy mac turned me off, but my friend did confirm my thoughts that they followed the pattern of the rest of the food and was also dry. I was no longer eating but I figured I could have a drink while my friends finished their food. I tried to order the Premier Dirty Martini which claimed to come with a blue cheese olive, the waiter said they didn't have blue cheese olives and they actually never did so he wasn't sure why they put it on the menu and that there was a big disconnect between the people making the menu and the people actually there making the food and drinks. He said he was going to check if they still had brine though if I still wanted it without the olives, I said that would be fine as long as it was a dirty martini. He came back and said they didn't have olive brine and I said oh then I don't want it as I would want a dirty martini not a regular one. Then he explained what is in a regular martini and I again said I didn't want that as I only like dirty martinis. My friend ordered the Rhubarb Whiskey Sour and again this was a seasonal drink that is no longer available so the waiter wasn't sure why it was still on the menu. I ordered the margarita with the BBQ rim as I thought that could be interesting, but it came with grapefruit in it and I'm not a huge fan of grapefruit flavor. I asked if it was possible for the grapefruit to be removed and the waiter said yeah but it wouldn't taste very good (which is confusing because without the grapefruit it's just a regular margarita) but he said it was only a slight grapefruit flavor so I said that's fine. It was fully a grapefruit margarita, not slightly grapefruit flavored. For food my friends got the BBQ wings and he said they were average because there was sauce to distract from the dryness but not memorable at all, and my other friend got the pulled pork sandwich and said it was good. Dinner with two friends to celebrate the end of my time on the Massachusetts project, we headed here as one friend has a car and Blackstrap isn't really easy to access otherwise. (There's a bus, I suppose.) It's a barbecue joint, so it isn't exactly a calm and orderly restaurant. It's more fun. You'll want to enter through the door next to the bar (we picked the side door next to the back room, oops) and then you might be able to find someone to seat you to a table. Two two-tops were dragged together, we were given menus and water. I immediately placed an order for six wings while we figured out what was for dinner. Drinks arrived before the wings and we placed our dinner orders. The wings arrived and they were different. Smoked and fried and sauced, they were delicious. The smoky flavor was obvious and the buffalo sauce was not too hot. Very delicious. I could totally go to town on these. For my main course, I chose a two-meat plate. The brisket was delicious. Not too "moist" it was flavorful and did not need sauce. The North Carolina pulled pork was different than what I'm used to but it was good. Big pieces mixed with small, a bit too much sauce tossed through it, but it was still flavorful and delicious. For sides, I had the cole slaw (quite creamy, not very tangy) and the collard greens (nicely cooked, very light on vinegar). I passed my cornbread to my friend, so no word there. I didn't get my friend's thoughts on their meals other than it was delicious. I snuck some green beans which were very crisp and delicious. The baked beans were a disappointment, especially as they're right here in Boston! So I'd recommend skipping those and sticking to what they're good at, which is everything else. The mac & cheese looked awesome - practically a "cake slice" that held together well. Service was fun and light and attentive. This was a tough one. I read somewhere someone made a comment that if you haven't tried 3 particular BBQ places in New England then you shouldn't have an opinion. As much as I disagree with the logic of that, I did agree with the other two places mentioned. Blackstrap was the 3rd. So naturally I had to add it to the list. Well initial reactions ... fun vibe bar theme. A little questionable that they are cash only. I mean I get it but ... comon. Service was friendly enough but ... a bit on the slow side, not the food, the service. I won't dwell on it but it's just a note to be aware of I guess. 3 meat combo with 2 sides a big hunk of Cornbread was only $19.99. Sounded crazy. Onto the food. Brisket came sliced and tough and it reminded me of a tough ham steak. It tasted more like pork and I wouldn't be surprised if it actually was. I've never had a brisket with almost no flavor to it and this will be my first one. Ribs were little riblets which honestly pisses me off. You gonna call yourself a BBQ joint and your Ribs are the appetizers at Applebee's? No! They were down to a 1 Star at that point. I really liked the glaze and the rub look on them though but it's really hard for me to believe they even made these things. These look like they came out of a bag. Menu said "Shredded BBQ Chicken" and it was just cut up chunks of smoked chicken soaked in sweet sauce. I won't say the flavor was "bad" but it kind of had a seafood familiarity to it. Cornbread was the heaviest bread I've ever had. It wasn't "bad" either but just thick and filling. One of the bigger servings of cornbread I've ever had though. Definitely unique. Seems to have some kind of a brown sugar or cinnamon drizzle on it. Easily mistook it for burnt areas if it was scrapped off the pan sheet. Couldn't really taste whatever that was though. Baked beans was good. No frills, nothing crazy, just good typical sweet baked beans And now the ONLY things that are giving them 2 instead of 1 Star. The Mac and Cheese is some of the best I've ever had. I don't know what they are doing right about this dish that they can't seem to get right with anything else but holy moley that was amazing. Mini macaroni in a gritty yet saucy and tangy cheese. Damn good stuff. And their Maple Sweet Mash was pretty bangin too but it does kinda taste like it was mass produced. Maybe I went on a real bad night, IDK. But whoever that was who said this was one of the top 3 in New England ... yikes. So for the sake of full disclosure, this review is based on a takeout order. I've heard really good things about the restaurant's vibe, and I'd love to check it out as soon as restaurants in Massachusetts reopen for regular operations. The food was good enough that I definitely want to go back. Now, about that food. I ordered a combo plate with brisket, pulled pork, coleslaw, and beans. It also came with cornbread. The restaurant had a convenient take-out window set up that made grabbing my meal super-easy. And the gentleman who handled my order was extremely pleasant, which was a plus. I could see how this is a place that exudes the kind of Southern hospitality that makes a barbecue joint so special. Back in my car, plastic silverware in hand, I chowed down on dinner. One item not pictured is the cornbread--because it was so incredibly delicious that I devoured it before I had a chance to photograph it. Not too sweet (this is dinner, after all, not dessert) and perfectly moist, it was a real treat. The piece was very nice-sized, too, although it was so good I could have eaten a whole pan of it. Very glad I didn't, though, because then I wouldn't have had room for everything else. As I dove into the food in the takeout tray, the sides jumped out at me as exceptional. The beans were excellent--they had a tanginess that was so wonderfully addictive. They weren't over-sweetened and, despite being tender, they hadn't been reduced to mush. But the coleslaw stole the show for me. It was creamy, but not drowning in dressing, and was the perfect balance of sweet and zesty. The cabbage stayed crisp, too, which was a very good sign. Both of the portions for the sides were ample. The barbecue itself didn't quite live up to the fantastic "opening act" of the sides. The pulled pork was decent, a bit on the dry side, but it had a nice, smoky flavor, and the portion was good. But the brisket was a little bit disappointing. It was definitely dry, and there was some kind of spice rub on it that I wasn't a big fan of. I'll all for "naked brisket" - I feel that if a barbecue joint cooks it right, it shouldn't need much of anything to spice it up. The pieces that didn't have the spice rub on it tasted better, in my opinion, but they were still dry. It made me glad I had a bottle of water handy. So, I was pleased overall, but I was a bit let down by the dryness of the meat. I have every intention of going back and checking the vibe out, though. And ordering more of that exceptional cornbread. This is Massachusetts--we're not known for our barbecue--and I do think this joint can definitely stand up to some of the much more expensive places in downtown Boston. As we easily found a spot as usual in Winthrop. (Tiny town with lots of parking) We entered Blackstrap to surprisingly find a festive atmosphere. Music was playing, people were drinking and laughing and I'm thinking, Why did I wait so long to leave the beach and head downtown?? As I looked over the menu, out of the corner of my eye I noticed a bunch of glass containers lined up on the shelf behind the bar with different fruits etc inside. Of course I inquired what they were and to my amazement they were infused alcoholic drinks... SCORE !!!! After a quick lineup of infused liquor, I immediately went for the Coconut Infused Rum... WOW IT WAS GOOD...... On this occasion I did not order BBQ as the kitchen was long closed, but I did have the opportunity to try it about a year back and the Ribs were cooked to perfection as was the pulled pork. I will return during dinner hours for more great BBQ and definitely at night for the Infused Alcoholic Beverages. I find Blackstrap is one of the better barbeque places in and around Boston. Although the competition is not exactly fierce. I've gone to Blackstrap a handful of times and have gotten delivery through Grubhub. If you go in person, it has a tavern-like atmosphere with plenty of seating and the bar centered in the middle of the main room. Parking is limited to the street. I enjoy getting the combo platter with pulled pork, sausage and brisket. The pork and the brisket are nice and tender while the sausage has a nice kick to it.
