I've driven by Blacksmith Corner Feed Store in Bellflower at least a hundred times, and today was finally the day I stopped in. What a fun surprise! This place has so much more than feed. Inside you'll find vintage horse and farming tools, old-fashioned candy, toys, vintage sodas, and just about anything you could need for your animals. It feels like stepping into a little piece of the past.One of my favorite parts was seeing all the birds. I was wandering around practicing my best Snow White moves because my dream is to someday have two birds following me around like in the movies. After spending time with the birds inside, we headed to the back where there were much older, chickens . Then came the highlight of the day. For some reason, I decided the chickens might enjoy a little music, so I pulled up "The Chicken Song" on my phone. To my complete surprise, the chickens started gathering around me as if they recognized it as their official anthem! One by one they came walking over until I had a whole audience. I wish I could have recorded it, but my phone was busy playing the music and my friend didn't have hers. It was one of those hilarious, unexpected moments that you couldn't plan if you tried.Great selection, friendly atmosphere, adorable animals, and a memorable chicken concert. Visited this establishment after passing by it for many years. My child wanted to see some rabbits. There was only one sleepy rabbit and several cages were empty. They were sold out of hens which is to be expected with the cost of eggs. I did see some finches and love birds. Another family was also walking around and I don't think they were approached by anyone either. All the workers were huddled in a corner and no one came to see if we needed any help. read more

I went to get crumble feed for my chicken. Now when I usually go they are not very knowledgeable so I try to do my homework first. I found Arturo and told him the crumble was bottom of the barrel power and not edible so he said they had a fresh bin in the back. When I decided what I wanted he started to dig in the powder bucket. I reminded him I wanted good stuff. He then told me he wasn't going to open a new bag when they still had some (bottom of the barrel) on the floor. WTF! I told him never mind and asked if he knew of another feed store around. He made no efforts to keep me as a customer. They lost out future feed purchases as well as waters and supplies. Good job Arturo. I just went back in to take a picture of the powder and it looks like Arturo put some fresh stuff on top. This was the best day ever. They have everything including nostalgic candies and snacks and sodas for humans as well as a huge selection of pet items and all kinds of feed and grain mixes for different birds. The best part is their adoption center for chickens and the birds they have that you can buy. I enjoyed this store I mainly came here to get baby chicks. I ended up getting an Easter egger baby, which comes fully vaccinated. That's why it's a little pricier per chick. I first visited on sunday FEB 9, but they were out of stock on quail, so the worker said restocking of quails are on wednesday. I went to the store on wednesday and they had quail, but the quail just came , so the worker told me I had to wait until friday. The animals being sold there looked happy, and they had a large range of supplies for the birds we bought. A worker recommended to the materials for the quail like grit, game food, and more information. On friday my sister bought the quail for 12.95, and they also recommended more stuff to buy. Overall the customer service is great, and the animals there were happy. The animals I saw there were finches, quails, chicks, cockatiels, doves, bunnies, chickens, budgies, though it may have changed. The materials in the store are excellent for keeping birds, and also cheaper than big chain pet stores. read more

The items/ products they sell are amazing but I will say some employees aren't useful. Prior to this visit I had first went to buy hay for my bunny's , there was a particular worker who was actually attentive and very helpful in finding a solution as to where I could store my bunny's block of hay. He even offered to help with putting the block of hay in a feeder bag that wasn't being used anymore. This time around, the employees weren't as much help. They were standing around and chatting it up with one another when they saw us clearly struggling with putting the hay in a bag right in front of them, rather than helping us which they should have been trying to help seeing as that's the minimum they could do when no other customers were around. This place is fine but it just really depends on what kind of workers are working that day. I love this place for animal medicine and food! My bunny has the sniffles and I was trying to track down a special medicine that normal pet stores do not carryZ after spending an hour calling different stores all over Los Angeles, I was delighted to hear that they carried what I was looking for! Growing up, my family would come and look at all the wild animals in the cages outside; they had rabbits, chickens, geese, ducks, etc. Did you know they have four different types of pigeon food? I purchased 6 chicks to add to my flock, I doubled and tripled checked with the person who was checking me out that is was a 90 precent chance they were female. I ended up with three roosters and one hen with a deformity. Out of six chickens, I ended up with only two good laying hens! Clearly much lower than 90%! This is a really bad ratio, and when I called in to have a conversation with management about this they absolutely had no care. They said they don't guarantee and were extremely rude to me, if I had received one rooster it wouldn't have been a big deal but three and a hen with deformity! That's crazy. I have been shopping here for at least four (4) years now. They carry everything from name brand dog food to organic chicken feed and anything in between. The employees are very friendly and always willing to help. If you are an urban farmer, this is the place to get your chicks. They even have deals were you buy two and get the third one free. We used to visit the store at least twice a month when we had the chickens in the backyard but now that we phased the chickens out, we only come every couple of months to buy the series of puppy shots (vaccines for the puppies). Wow, this place is still here! I remember coming here as a kid to buy baby chicks, a rabbit, and who knows what else. Blacksmith's has changed a bit, but the red building still stands out on Lakewood Boulevard lost in the sands of time. You can still get all the pet basics here, but I do recall they used to sell a lot more when the area had horses and even more agrarian roots. Now they offer stuff for kids, but for they have all the basics for small game, dogs, cats, ducks, geese, chickens, roosters, snakes, rabbits, pigeons, doves, parakeets, cockatoos, guineas, quails, goats, lamb, and turkeys. They have all of these animals too! I think that's why my folks used to bring me here, it was like a petting zoo without the petting, and we could get our backyard zoo supplies. It's changed a lot, and unfortunately needs more community help than ever before. Prices are a little higher than, say, if you were out in the Inland Empire out in the boonies to get your bales of hay. I came here to pine shavings for chickens and quails, and they loved it. At $5 for 1500 cubic inches, it's a decent deal and I know it wasn't going to a big corporation. I do hope you and community consider this an option, and support your local business. Blacksmith's has a parking lot adjacent to their building and doesn't say the name right out on front. Just look for the red farm house building. read more
