I went in to use the self dog wash. At first there was no one at the front desk, but someone came out after a few minutes and told me just wait a second for her to get one ready for me. My dog has a lot of anxiety in new places because he was a rescue who was abused before I got him. He started whining after we had been waiting about five minutes and darting around the room pulling me nervously. I looked back in the dog wash and there was no one using it.. I asked an employee how much longer it would be before we would be allowed to use it and she said probably about 20 minutes, so we and left. No one seemed to notice my dog was anxiously whining. I'm not sure why we weren't welcomed to use the dog wash since there was no one back there. read more

I've never seen her put down, all four of her paws out, attempts on grabbing cement, they used her leash, then pulling to take her back. Never repeated mistake again! For myself, lived in area, over 20 years and, personally, avoid going there +/or purchasing at this boutique, unless, I have no other choice. read more

My wife found this place by searching the Internet. We have a pitbull mix whom we adopted last year. She's a sweet and friendly dog, but we were having problems with her jumping on people and with reactivity towards other dogs. We really were struggling... Bernadette, McKenzie and Cecilia worked with 'Pearl' and us and literally changed our lives . We are thankful for their professionalism, warmth and sense of humor. Don't bring your Shih-tzu here. We brought our 9 month old here to be groomed. Our only request was to leave her ears alone. They were shaved! It may take a year for them to get back to normal, if ever. The coloring was exquisite and the length was great. We did not want to lose her coloring. We were told she had mats in her ears and they offered to prove it. Even if that were the case, which it was not, the least the groomer could have done was to call and confirm our request. It is very upsetting that the sole request was ignored. Don't trust them if you have a specific request. read more

I went to use the self-service wash for our puppy who had never been there at 6:05pm. After our dog passed away suddenly at the young age, I have not been there until today. I knew they would stop the service 30 minutes prior to the closing at 7pm. When I got there, I was told that the self-service wash had already closed at 6pm - and that it was the new policy as it took time to clean the facility. I drove 15 miles each way for nothing. The staff was very nice and apologetic. But checking the website, I did not see anything about the new policy that the self dog wash would close one hour prior to the store closing. There used to be the clear information that it would close 30 minutes prior to the store closing on the website. I checked everywhere but could not find any such info. I wish I knew the new policy that was not found anywhere. Such a nice place to wash dogs - the sprayer that dispenses both water and the shampoo together is priceless and there are only 2 wash stalls in one room with variety of natural shampoos. BlackPaw is great. We have been taking Hatch here since he was a puppy. The staff is always kind and sweet with our energetic pup. His fur always looks great after their visit. They even made him look good after his hair was a little matted. The only downside is that you have to plan ahead since they are frequently booked out months in advance. read more

I was referred here by a neighbor. It's a little pricy & the products cater to the small & medium breeds, but the staff was an absolute delight to chat with. This limited size availability is what kept me from giving 5 stars. The staff deserves way more than 5 stars. Suggestion: Maybe add some products for special-needs/elderly cats & dogs (of ALL sizes)? This seems to be a need among quite a few people I have talked to. I also understand that the place may have recently changed ownership? I will be back and will recommend to others. It's a lovely pet boutique and if stocked right - can serve a large customer base in Superior/Louisville that can afford to spend that little bit extra to make it profitable for the owner too. read more

Cat Grooming: Pet Drop Off - experience was just ok. Room for improvement in your customer experience interactions. I'm a visual person, it would help to walk pet owners through a check list of sorts explaining each grooming option, what is covered in those options & the price. As well as a place for the owner to write down any additional needs or comments before grooming. An online form could do the job well. Then implement all the basics of customer service and build trust with your clients & ensure them their pet is in good hands. BE SURE to bring your cat in a carrier. You pull up to BlackPaw Ranch and you immediately see that when it comes to dog training, these folks mean business. The compound is amazing! It's Harvard for dogs and Bernadette is the President and Lead Professor. She understands dogs; their strengths, weaknesses, good and bad habits, and how to train YOUR dog exactly the way that is needed. Bernadette's style of training is no nonsense, and she makes that clear. The effort that Bernadette and her team put into our dog was stellar. Our dog, Pippi, was a wonderful puppy but as time went on, picked up bad habits such as jumping, barking, nipping at clothing, and ignoring basic commands. We went from "Wow! What great dog parents we are." to "Oh, no! What do we do with this bad child?" So happy that BlackPaw was recommended to us. There is a lot of homework and discipline as dog parents but if you commit to the process and really do what Bernadette tells you, I guarantee you'll have a great dog! It was a big investment, but we considered just how long we would have our beloved family member and to have her go from a good dog to a great dog was worth every penny and then some! I took my dog here for a full groom a few months back and I will definitely not be going back. My friend with the same type of breed, recommended BlackPaw to me so I thought, ok worth a shot. I talked with a man at the desk extensively about my dogs groom beforehand. I called about 2 hours after I left just checking on timing (normally his grooms take about 4 hours) They said they were having a hard time because he was so matted so they were taking breaks. I called back again at hour 3 because I drove all the way from Denver for this appt. They said both he and the groomer were getting stressed. (I understand when a dog is matted it can be difficult on both dog and human, I used to work at vets, dog daycares and grooming facilities.) If it was really that stressful of a situation, they should have called me and said lets maybe try tomorrow, or are you ok with clipping out the matts, etc. I went to pick him up and the woman at the desk who checked me out (I think the owner) said the "the groomer was crying because the groom was so difficult." She said we should have used a special shampoo or conditioner to help loosen up the matts and acted very annoyed that I brought my dog there *1st - The man who checked us in felt his coat, we went over EVERYTHING, and he never mentioned this. *Second, why did they not call me before they started recommending this product? *Third, if clearly both my dog and the groomer were stressed out, again, why was I not called. *Finally - why go on and on about how upset, distraught and how your groomer was in tears to a client. To top it off, he had cuts all over his stomach and in between his paws were shaved bald. They were so red, inflamed and sore they were clearly bothering him. I felt terrible for him, and I was not a happy mama. read more

I recently brought my 10 year old Scottish Terrier (Fiona) to BlackPaw for a grooming. I was told the groomer that took care of my dog had been at this establishment the longest. Upon picking up my dog, I was told my dog bit the groomer when she was working around my dog's back end. I was totally shocked in that my dog has never bit anyone!!!! I felt terrible but also feel a long term groomer should have been using a muzzle knowing the temperament of a older dog especially a Scottie? Took our dog here for grooming a few times as it is one of the few places in the area accepting new clients (I now know why). The last time we took him they called to tell me he was matted and would not be able to go a full 2 inches on his top knot. I said ok, do what you need to. When we picked him up they had completely shaved his entire body. This is a poodle and it was 20 deg outside. Multiple other occasions we have had poor communication from their front desk regarding scheduling grooming but after this incident we will not be returning. Returned my cat to me in a poop and pee covered carrier. I asked for towel or if they were going to clean it up and my request was ignored. I will find a groomer closer to me that has better customer service and doesn't traumatize my 18 year old cat. Supposedly groomer has 20 years experience, but she lacks customer service skills. How about a few paper towels to hand to me? I didn't hand over the carrier or cat covered in excrement so make some attempt to return to me in better condition. Disappointing and honestly appalling. Stick to selling cans of food and dumb birthday cookies for dogs. Again, Bernadette...first of all the cat is a she! Second, You can't give some paper towels to me when requested? They'll groom your pup professionally as well ($25/dogs up to 50lbs, $35/dogs over 50 lbs, $45/long-haired dogs.) Dog's Got Issues? There are a million options. Group classes. Private Classes. Even Behavior Counseling! Unleashed is located just outside of Boulder so the prices are super reasonable and the owner, Bernadette is friendly and sooooo knowledgeable, you might just think she's a dog whisperer. Oh and they have natural food, all the toys you'd ever entertain buying, and it's fun to take your dog here and talk to the other owners looking at the organic food or thinking about starting a group session. And the walls are so bright and cheery! The next big thing will be the person who offers dating mixers for dog owners. DOH! Maybe I should keep that under my hat? read more

I'm always nervous to try a new groomer because my dog can be very shy with strangers. The staff was very kind and made me feel comfortable leaving Sophie in their hands. They walked me through all of the grooming services they offer and what they would be doing with Sophie before I left. Just to clarify, my dog had a couple of minor mats in his armpits and pants - not his whole body and not his back or tail at all. And his tail wasn't "razor burn", it was straight up scalped. It had to have bled a lot when it happened and I find it hard to believe that no one noticed. Finally, yes, the after is "cute" and looks a lot like his summer cut - but is totally inappropriate at the end of November in Colorado. He had to wear sweaters all winter. read more

Very perplexed and disappointed. We brought our dogs to BlackPaw just a handful of times. Yesterday our dogs came out of the groomers eager to come home and all seemed well (it was 3°F outside so I didn't pay close attention to anything other than getting them in the car quickly.) Once settled at home did I notice our terrier/poodle's paw was bleeding and blood all over the couch. Upon further inspection of his body did I notice 5 cuts on his belly and 2 near his bum. He stayed in the corner of our mud room the duration of the evening shivering and despondent. I called and spoke with an employee who was apologetic and then a separate call from the owner. We were respectful to each other, talked through the situation at hand and ended the call with her offering to reimburse 100% of the grooming for our dog and would comp our next visit. She also said she would place our dog with a different groomer to ensure this didn't happen again. My husband and I were impressed with how things were handled and happy a company was wanting to make things right. I called the store today to give them my credit card for the reimbursement but the man on the phone instead wanted to give me the name of a vet groomer who handles dogs with anger issues. Anger issues? I was taken back and explained this must be wrong. I was told by the owner the next grooming session would be with a different groomer and in addition to, would give us the next session for free. His response .... "So you don't want the number to the vet groomer?" Utter disbelief - I said no thank you and to also cancel our future appointments for both our dogs. Insult to injury. Pun intended. read more

Sorry, but I can't recommend them to anyone! I have an older dog, and this last time they called to say the groomer couldn't complete the job because he was too nervous and nipping. (3 other times before this, they've been able to do a complete grooming, though not the best job I've seen.) He got a bath, very little trimming, and the groomer cut his skin shaving way too close. The comb out made him look like a ragged fluff ball. Final blow: they had the audacity to charge me the full amount and ask for a tip. No tip, no more, and thumbs down on this place. read more

I appreciate having this high quality business within walking distance of our house!! They have a great selection of foods and pet supplies. The grooming is excellent. Our dog is generally not a fan of grooming but he always looks his best when he's been here for a bath and clip and seems happy and proud of himself! I went in today for a harness and wasn't sure what the proper size was. They helped me very quickly and I got just what I needed. Shopping locally at a place like Black Paw makes life so much easier--I found what I needed in minutes, vs having to walk the aisles at a big box store to find what i wanted and then having to hunt down an employee to get advice. First time puppy owner here. Walked in and was immediately (and happily) greeted with my 4 month puppy in tow. I needed to get some grooming supplies and Connie was gracious enough to talk me through a few options most suitable for my dog's coat. In addition, she showed me the self wash area and explained how everything worked along with the shampoo variety and price range options. They even provide the humans with a large apron to wear so your clothing doesn't get soaked while giving the bath. I checked out Black Paw due to other Yelp reviews and so glad I did. Really happy to find a small, locally owned shop that carries a variety of products at reasonable prices. read more

I'm very new to Colorado and was delighted to find such a great local dog shop so close to my home. The store is small but jam packed full of awesomeness. They have my dogs special grain free food and even carry these handmade designer leather collars which were hard to get my hands on in California. They only carry high quality products which I can really appreciate. I never feel like I waste my money on something that is going to break in a few weeks. Staff has been courteous and very helpful whenever I have questions and even squeezed my dog in for grooming on a day they were fully booked. It was a great experience all in all. "Wow" doesn't even come close to the difference great training makes for your pet and the owners who love them! Our experience with our GSD Harlow was nothing short of phenomenal. All the dog training I did before fell short of making a well behaved dog. Two weeks with Bernadette was a game changer for Harlow and for us. Her knowledge and expertise helped us become better dog parents as well as producing a happier, well behaved dog! Unleashed is just down the road from where we live, but that's not the reason for why it's so awesome! (It does contribute, of course). The retail portion of the store offers a great selection, especially for such a small space. They have great bulk treats that are extremely competitively priced (I think it's 4.99 or 5.99 for a pound). I'm not kidding, these treats are great! They have a huge variety that you can combine so you aren't stuck with 5 bags of different treats. They also have bulk bully sticks that are also pretty inexpensive. Our dog loves them! We haven't used their grooming services yet, but have repeatedly used their self-service dog wash. This area has your choice of natural pet shampoos, raised tubs, and lots of provided grooming tools. It makes washing my dog sooooo much easier than doing it at home; too bad it's so expensive! I wouldn't say it's more expensive than any other self-service (15$), but just more expensive than washing at home. All in all, Unleashed has great staff who are always friendly, great retail options, and a great self-service dog wash. read more

These guys are awesome! Love their facility. Friendly staff. Most are knowledgeable. Good hours. A little on the expensive side, but most products they carry are high quality & you can't get most of the food products at big box competitor stores. Only missing one star because they recently started taking dogs in the back for simple nail clippings. They used to do it right there in the wash room on the table, or in the back hallway. I appreciated being able to be there & keep my dog calm for them. When places change their process to go behind closed doors, it makes me suspicious about changes in quality and how they are treating my dog. They are under new management (but not new ownership) and I can't help but wonder if this change is the result of bringing someone onboard that has less concern for hands-on relationship management. 1st must say that I love the DIY dog bath- great for after a weekend camping sure beats trying to wash my dog in my bathroom and all the mess. (But I found another place that is only 10....so) I have 2 dogs both are mixed I have taken them here multiple times and GAVE SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS as to HOW I WANT THE END RESULT...(and I have taken her to another "chain" groomer and was perfect spot on and took 2+ish hours to complete) 1 hr and 15 mins later get the call that she is done....get there and HUGE disappointment...nothing is done to my request and then when I asked to fix one thing OMG I got attitude???? Tried em again and STILL not happy. The other dog THEY NEVER EVER get her face right. I love to spend my money at local places and try to avoid chain stores. But I have tried to give them the benefit of the doubt countless times grooming wise and its been a eeeh multiple times :( On the customer service note there was a time I went in there to use the DIY dog bath, went to ask for towel and the 2 ladies at the desk wouldn't even look at me? Finally got a groomers attention and got my towel....then went to pay and the "trainer" was on the phone again would not look at me turned her back to me and walked away then another person came up to the desk and then rang up a person who came in AFTER I had been waiting 10 mins to pay. I never heard a "we will be right with you", "someone will be out to help you" NOTHING....Am I not good enough to get customer service but I am great for you to take my money???? Poor form!
