Great range, nice people and staff. My only issue is the one road in and one road out. But other than that, nice laid back range.

I called to find out general information. Their fees are charged per weapon fired!!! This is pure gouging. I guess they only want novice shooters or force you to buy a membership. Cedar range on the north side is a much better option if you have several weapons. And it's has multiple sections separated by high burms. They have memberships too, but they won't charge you per weapon if you don't want to buy one. read more

This used to be the best range around, now it appears to have new owners or new staff and has change the rules and increase the price. It is now just another Fudd range. Sorry fellas, the days of practicing transition shots and getting on the timer is over. Take your money to a shooting club. The price is now nine dollars per gun. This is more a public service announcements and I complain because everybody knows prior, This was the best place around. So sad. Rip. read more

I did enjoy my time at the pistol range, I went with my father and little brother the daily charge is $8 per pistol w/ target so for $24 we spent about four hours shooting and we brought extra special targets, the range is all out doors unfortunately for the pistol range is uncovered and the range in pretty much never cleaned so depending on your desired shooting distance you may be standing on a lot of shells. Overall not too bad of a place owners don't hover others shooting are respectful of cease fire I will be going there again! read more

My fist time this last weekend at Blackhawk Shooting range. Located about 10 miles out of San Antonio on 35 South. The drive there is very scenic and much of the Texas countryside close enough to enjoy. Driving into the shooting range is a drive past beautiful pastures and looks like a true Texas shooting range when you arrive. The mom and pop staff are very welcoming and the prices are cheap. You only pay 8.00 per gun but not the shooters. My whole family can enjoy the range. Not a fancy range but who needs fancy just a good target and fun. I highly recommend it. read more

Went to Blackhawk on Labor day. I was on the rifle range with my two sons who were sitting side by side at the stations on the firing line.. One was shooting an AR and one a Mosin Nagant. I was behind them going back and forth between the two teaching and making pointers. BTW: Being retired U.S. Army Special Forces I have taught THOUSANDS of people to shoot and run HUNDREDS (if not thousands) of ranges for everything from basic marksmanship to Advanced Combat Shooting in 180 degree kill houses and was certified to be a "Range Safety Officer" in the military. Anyway, this so-called range master was on the right of the range sitting in a chair over by the main building. The so-called range master comes over and VERY LOUDLY announces that my oldest son (17) is off of the range for safety violations. As I am standing behind my other son, in view of both my son's actions, and have not seen him do anything! I say "For what?" He replies "he is shooting short in front of the target and ricocheted 3 or 4 rounds over the berm. He did not come to me to tell me I needed to check the weapon and/or my son's sight picture and as I was working with my other son I had not yet seen low rounds..... HE JUST SAID "HE CAN'T SHOOT ANYMORE" Now here is the thing. 1. I asked if there was a Range book of safety rules for the range. ONE DOES NOT EXIST!!! BASICALLY THEY MAKE UP THEIR OWN RULES AS THEY GO.... 2. THERE IS NO SIGN OR ANY RANGE RULES POSTED! 3. IT IS A RANGE...... The weapon was shooting downrange and there was no firing safety violation. It so happened the aiming point site I had on the weapon had apparently been bumped or hit and was shooting low. 4. I understand the dangers of ricocheting rounds better than most people BUT to kick someone off a range without a WARNING, especially when the rounds are going DOWNRANGE??? How about "Your son is shooting low, you need to check the weapon and or his sight picture." 5. I did not make an issue of it because the bottom line is that you cannot win ON THE FIRING LINE with a "so-called" Range Safety Officer on the firing line as nothing good can come of it. Here is the bottom line..... I have been going for about a year (I bought a membership because it was cheaper). I have seen numerous safety violations which were not addressed, and NOW my son was thrown off the range for shooting downrange AT A RIFLE RANGE through a NON-PROHIBITED ACTION because of a MADE-UP rule by one of the so-called Range Masters...... I would call that, and the professionalism of the excuse for a Range Master pretty piss poor. IF ANYTHING MY SON DESERVES AN APOLOGY for needlessly being embarrassed WHEN HE HADN'T DONE ANYTHING WRONG!!! read more

I have been to a variety of shooting ranges. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages. Different prices get you different amenities. However the basic purpose of every shooting range is to provide a safe place to practice your marksmanship. I decided to try out Blackhawk because some of the other ranges have been a bit crowded lately and I was told that this one is more spacious. It is more spacious. You are not likely to be showered by the spent cases of the person next to you. A nice variety of weapons are allowed. There are no restrictions on rate of fire. These were all very attractive to me. I went ahead and purchased an extended membership. The problem is this. One person supervises the entire range from inside an office. We were instructed that that customers supervise themselves. I have never seen so many people with no concept of basic gun safety. People were sweeping others with their barrels. People were walking up to switch out targets will other in the same line were still firing (no cease fire called). People were shooting from behind other people in the same line. People were continuing to handle their weapons during a cease fire. When I went to talk to the only supervisor, his response was, "I am only one person. Customer's need to handle gun safety themselves." I went back to shooting, but when a man continues loading shotgun shells into his gun for the third cease fire in a row there is a definite problem. When I asked that customer to please not handle his loaded weapon during a cease fire when people are down range, his answer was, "It's not your shooting range!" There is never a good time to get confrontational with someone with a loaded shotgun. I pack up my things to leave. Even though I had just paid for an extended membership, I had no intension of returning. When I went back to the office to return my targets, I was told to leave and never return. I am anything but a hothead. It takes a lot to upset me. I never loose my composure. There are a few things I am not going to compromise on, and one of them is safety. If you are willing to compromise on safety, then this is your place. You may have a great time, or you may end up in a body bag. Suddenly I have a renewed love for the other ranges I frequent where safety is a priority. read more
