I saw at least one hole on the back nine which should have had a fence around an area near the quarry with at least a 20 foot drop. Very cool design. The course was in great shape. I probably found this course more challenging than some of the others we'd played---at least based on my score. The course is well kept. Pace of play was good even though there was a group of women on top of us for many of the holes. I think we outran them in the final 2 holes. Easy parking. Close to the airport. They have a great clubhouse for food.

Texas got plenty of rain over the last few weeks which should have made the course pristine. There was overgrowth everywhere and grass cut in unnecessary areas. I literally lost a ball that we all seen down the middle. The first cut of the fringe was higher than you see in the tour, or even the Quarry course (if you're from here). There were actual flowers grown in the traps. Speak the trap, rock hard less than an inch down. They need to shut this course down for six months, and get it together, or either start paying people to play it vise the people wasting their money. I didn't see or play the Loma course today however on the drive out I could see that the #2 green was tore up like the green in my photo. Don't waste your money!

Looking for an acceptable place to hit golf balls midst the searing heat of summer? The Wylie Golf…read moreCenter is a unique range that just might fit the bill. Situated off Rochelle Drive, this used to be not just a range, but also an executive golf course, perfect for a quick and enjoyable round of golf. Alas, the course was closed, and the location is reborn as the Wylie Range. The executive course is now in disrepair, overgrown with weeds and bushes....a pity! Behind the diminutive club house is a cricket field, used by certain leagues throughout the season. The very real advantage of this range is its unique (for our area) double decker design, with hitting off mats on the first and second floor. (This two story design is very common in Japan, which I spied on my trip there a few years ago, given the premium on real estate in major cities there.) But the advantage in our city is the respite from the sun during practice. And should the intrepid golfer prefer grass, there is also an area left of the main area for that type of practice. The staff is always pleasant and welcoming, and the facility offers clubs for sale (I am unsure if the pricing is competitive) and offers some club repair. Lessons are offered by the pros at the range, adults and youngsters often seen taking advantage of this feature. One feature of the range is that the terrain drops away from the hitting area, which I find somewhat difficult to determine actual distances I am hitting, despite markers that one can target. But this is perhaps just my particular issue. Balls are of newer Callaway range balls, in contradistinction to some complaints from a couple of years ago, some complaining of old, shoddy balls. Sadly, the short game area is definitely lacking, with bunkers filled with pebbles and overgrown with grass. The chipping grass is marked with weeds, and the larger putting area did not survive the summer heat: dead grass, not even tended today. This is a major disappointment, as years ago, the putting area was large and of different breaks that would allow development of skill with this aspect of the game. But given the shortcomings of the short game area, the double decker range is a blessing for our climate during the summer, and in truth is my "go to" range for that one reason. If you love hitting balls, but do not want to suffer so much with the sun, visit the range on Rochelle. I think you will enjoy the experience!!

The only downfall was some of the greens are starting to see wear from moving cups around, got bumpy in the old cup spots. Lots of sand and tough slopes made it quite a challenge. That said I have to say, at least to me, this course isn't to far off from some top level courses in America. I've played Pine Hurst a couple of times and other top courses from GA, FL to CA including the near perfect weather of San Diego and San Luis Obispo for a wounded warrior tournaments or as a guest of a club member...and...although this isn't a B-2 Air Base this course is the bomb. Location: The golf course can be a little difficult to find coming in from the Main Gate but from the South Gate (open weekdays from 0600-1800) it's right around the corner only a few minutes away. Ranges: Driving - This range is clearly marked with poles every 50 yards, which I prefer to the flags. However, for those who like the simulated greens with flags they have those too. Cost is $3.00, cash not tokens so bring $1.00 bills if you got them, per bucket of 30 balls. However the best deal is to buy a key fob for the dispenser for $60.00 as it will give you $90.00 worth of balls. I didn't know that when I came but it would've cost me the same over the long weekend with plenty more balls to get my game in shape before heading off on the fairway. Sand / Chipping - The practice sand and chipping green lay next to the driving range. I also found this area it quite good with solid greens and good well groomed sand. Putting - The putting areas are outstanding. Well groomed greens the same quality as the greens out on the course. The Course: I love these fairways. They're extremely well groomed with top quality grass. I also like how the fairway isn't one consistently long run to the hole. Depending on the hole your at it can stop soon after the ladies tee and open back up as it nears the green. The sides of fairways like the apron have longer and grass that's a bit more wild slowing down and shortening ground drives but don't get me wrong these areas are still extremely well cared for. The Greens: Nearly perfect. Great grass without any signs of fungus or damage from excessive play. I found the roll to be a medium speed, depending on the moisture on the ground. Although the greens are large most have a good single if not multiple slope to them. I also can't recall to many of them that weren't surrounded by sand traps. That said if you got a straight shot from the fairway and can keep it off the ground you've got a pretty good shot on avoiding most of the trouble. Water: Despite having some large areas of water that parallel some of the greens there were only two across the water shots, which I loved because it kept my arch nemesis (across the water shots) from ruining my game. These are on the front 9, holes 4 and 5, but be careful! The water isn't off the Tee but encompasses the hole. Clubhouse: The place looks nice and is well kept. Although I didn't try to food it did look better than most I've seen in public and some private clubhouses. The Pro-Shop is top-notch as are the rental clubs. Since I didn't travel with mine on this trip I took full advantage of the Boozka Clubs. Outside directly behind the clubhouse and between the putting greens is a moderate to large gazebo with lounge chairs as well as the typical lawn furniture...making it a perfect place for a post game drink, weather permitting of course.
