We arranged an overnight in Bozeman specifically to eat at Blackbird Kitchen and arrived with high expectations. Our expectations were met from the moment we walked in the door. Refreshing ambiance, delightful service, a menu that would do Mark Ladner proud and fantabulous food. In fact, the cocoa linguine with lamb sugo topped with sottocenere cheese was among the finest plates of pasta we have ever had anywhere.
The word restaurant is rooted in the French for "restoration", as in to restore the spirit. Blackbird Kitchen sure gets that right. Our only complaint is Blackbird's front door is several hundred miles drive from our own.
That's the bottom line. Details follow for those interested.
AMBIANCE:
Relaxed, all people are welcome here vibe in one room space with industrial loft meets cucina sensibilities. An open kitchen, high ceilings, white walls and windows looking onto Main street, it beckons "join us". Seating for maybe 45 diners total at a combination of unadorned wood tables and chairs for maybe 30 and the remainder at high perch tables and bar counter. Falling a little short of sardine can tight, the seats are still close enough that you'll hear every detail of your neighbor's conversations whether you want to or not. That's a drawback. On the plus side, perfect fit music mix is set low enough to not compete with conversation. Hooray!
MENU/ FOOD / VALUE:
The menu has a regional, rustic Italian focus and changes often for what is farm to fork fresh. I love that they write sourcing footnotes on the bottom of the menu. I like knowing where the food I eat comes from.
Menu is divided roughly like this...
...starters - small plates ($4 - $13) which range from olives to house baked artisan bread to soup to salads to burrata
...pasta and polenta ($13 - $17) in four or so options
... animal proteins($18 - $22) which include items like roast chicken or pork chops to fish
...pizza ($10 - $16) from their wood fired oven in combinations from simple like margherite to complex like mostarda with prosciutto
...desserts (@$9) included options like budino, pana cotta and tarts
We started with a chopped salad with herbs, cherry tomatoes, ricotta salata, walnuts and citrus. ($7) It was perfectly fresh, beautifully composed and expertly dressed with vinaigrette. We make great salads in our home kitchen so are often disappointed when ordering out. This time we were beyond delighted.
The cocoa linguine with lamb sugo ($17) had tender chunks of braised lamb and a velvety sauce tossed with the savory, house made pasta cooked al dente and finished with aromatic sottocenere. Remarkably good. We were tempted to lick the dish.
The pizzas should not be missed. Perhaps 12" plus in size, they arrive at the table cut in quarters and are easily shareable by two or even four as starter or provide a meal for one. The artisan combinations are intriguing. We shared Zambi, with lamb and pork sausage, roasted peppers, taggiasco olives, cheese and fresh mint ($16).
Dessert was salted chocolate bundino ($9) and espresso. The budino taste and texture were more ganach- like than budino based on other experiences. Still this was wonderful.
Dinner for two as noted above with a total of three glasses of wine (prosecco, nebbiolo and lacrima) was @$80.00.
LIBATIONS:
Well crafted wine list of largely Italian, other European and NW wines. Four or five options in both red and white by glass @ $8 - $12. (Love that they offer bubbles, prosecco, by the glass!) Dozens of options by bottle @ $32 - $150. Also carafes of house red or white for $16.00 Last night's carafe wines were a French Piqoupel and an Italian Chianti. Corkage fee is $15 with two bottle maximum. A quibble is that the by glass pours seem short for the price.
SERVICE:
Friendly, knowledgeable, efficient in a "we're glad you came" way. We felt welcome and well cared for but not hovered over. We arrived at 6p, a little early for our reservations, and told our server we wanted to share several items and take our time. She got it just right for the timing. And we love that runners are on tap to help out when servers are tied up with other customers which ensures everything arrives at the table at the right temperature. Splendid service + fantabulous food = delightful dining.
THIS N THAT:
1) RESERVATIONS: As of June 1, reservations which were once only for parties of six or more are now possible for parties of all sizes. Woohoo! Here's a tip: Make reservations so you aren't having to stand in line at 8:00p for a seat even on a Monday!
2) ACCESSIBILITY: Level in and all on one level. Several standard height tables.
3) PARKING: On street in downtown Bozeman. Good luck with that. read more
