10 things I like about The Black Walnut (and why I gave it a 5-star review) I'm visiting daughter-in-law in Conroe TX as she's finishing up her second pregnancy and will give me my second grandchild, a baby girl, any moment now. Her better half is a lineman that and is currently working in the PNW and will be for the foreseeable future. I came down for a few months to help with household chores and look after Lane, my first grandson, who recently turned 3. I'm enjoying my new role as a relatively new grandpa. I've always been a bit of a foodie. I'm also a pilot and as such, I decided to visit The Black Walnut, a local restaurant that sits atop The Galaxy FBO located at the Conroe airport. What a nice surprise. I tend to gravitate towards "hole in the wall" type restaurants that offer a unique experience, great food, and interesting wine selections. While TBW doesn't fit that description precisely, you would be amiss if you did not visit TBW, rather you live in the area or, like me, your just passing through. The following are 10 reasons why... 10. Bacon. It's at the top of my list when it comes to food... up there with fine red wine, brie cheese, thick crusted bread, and dark chocolate. The bacon at TBW is crisp, but not too crisp, not too thick and not too thin, and it's peppery. Just the way I like it. :) 9. Decor. I'm somewhat of a minimalist and like things simple. The decor at TBW is simple and understated and their space is very well designed. 8. A great menu. A clean design with a nice selection of lunch and breakfast items, described in detail. The prices are middle of the road and on par for the quality of food. 7. Consistency. I dined at TBW about a dozen times when visiting Conroe and they nailed it every time. I like restaurants I can go back to on a regular basis and feel confident recommending to friends and family. TBW has a standard it aims for and they delivered on it each visit. 6. Cleanliness. The TBW is as clean as a whistle, as are the restrooms and associated facilities. 5. The view. One side of the restaurant is floor to ceiling windows. Unless you decide to sit at the bar, every table in TBW has a great view that overlooks the Conroe airport. It's a great spot to watch the airplanes fly in and out, or watch one of the thunderstorms that roll through on a regular basis. 4. Kindness. I sometimes spent hours at TBW. It kind of became my office away from home. One day I showed up at 8:00 AM and did not leave until 3:30, which is half an hour after they close. I never once felt pressure to leave. On the contrary, the staff continually made me feel welcome. 3. The little things. How many restaurants take the time to heat your coffee cup for you? 2. The food. I did not have a chance to sample very many items, but everything I did sample was very good, it came out very fast, without spending time under heat lights, and was cooked perfectly. 1. The People Who Work There. Have you ever sipped red wine out of a Reidel wine glass? A Reidel makes a good wine great. In the same fashion, excellent service raises the quality of the entire restaurant. It's been said that great service will make good food seem great, but great food never improves poor service and I believe that to be true. Of the entire crew, I've only had the opportunity to meet Shawn, Victor, and Kaitlin (sorry if I butchered the names), and they're awesome. I live in Oregon, which I think is one of the prettiest of all 50 states. However, while Oregon excels in natural beauty, it's my opinion it's the people that shine in Texas and the people who work at TBW are a great example of that. Super friendly, kind, professional, attentive, sincere, and even fun, are words I would use to describe them. Whoever runs this restaurant does a great job of hiring the right people. :) I will be leaving Conroe in a week or two. When I return, The Black Walnut will continue to be my go-to restaurant. Now if I can just talk them into opening for dinner. :) Cheers! read more

This is definitely our new favorite place to eat. It is kind of like a better Panera Bread without the bread. You grab a menu, order your food and receive a buzzer. Choose your own table and then grab your food when your buzzer goes off. The staff very friendly and the food was delicious! From every table in the restaurant you can see planes landing and taking off! Our kids loved it! It is a loud environment so if you're looking for quiet and calm this is definitely not it. After the reviews, I expected much more than an over priced airport diner with average food. My roast beef grilled sandwich had a tablespoon of meat on one half and perhaps twice that in the other half. The tortilla soup was "average" and the Santa Fe salad had a huge mound of tortilla strips completely covering a small salad with a disappointing amount of chicken. At $ 43.00 for a light lunch, we expected better. FOLLOW UP... I did receive a follow up email from the parent company for details. Although this is a chain, this location is really neat and different. The restaurant is located on the third floor of the airport and looks out over the air field. You can watch the planes take off, land, and maneuver around. Great place to grab lunch if you are out in the area. The food was decent. I ordered the fiesta jalapeño chicken pasta. It had some bell peppers, onions, jalapeños, chicken, and cream sauce with bow tie pasta and topped with tortilla strips. A little spicy and quite good flavor. Any Black Walnut Café location is wonderful but, this one is very special. The food is always superb as is the service. What sets it apart though is the fantastic view. This location is at the Conroe airport and has big windows so you can see the planes taking off and landing while you eat. Superb! read more

Not bad. But can I start by saying the place is usually freezing. I've asked management to turn down the air (I'm talking it had to be blowing low 60s in some parts of the dining area) and they said they couldn't because the kitchen uses the same air. I've worked on a kitchen and it's supposed to be warm, and patrons should not leave because it's freezing so that the kitchen hands can feel cool. The food is hit or miss. Large portions that usually are cold (probably cause the kitchen is cool, just a guess) and waaaaay too much cheese on omelets and eggs. Like a gross amount of cheese. Like they give you egg with your cheese. All that being said we frequent because it's kid friendly and the food isn't the worst. We leave when it's too cold and don't dine though. read more

Sausage has nice level of spice, bacon nice and thick and I really like the breakfast potato cubes with peppers. couple notes...Pancakes are given a little dusting of powdered sugar. The food is good but this place is extremely poorly run. I ordered a burger and asked to substitute a soup for the French fries. It came out with potato salad. I told the girl at the delivery counter and she conferred with her manager and they told me there was an upcharge for the soup which I had no problem with, but they couldn't just charge me the extra $2 or whatever and told me I'd have to pay the full $8 or whatever as if I was ordering it individually. They were less than friendly about the whole thing and I wound up just paying full price for the soup even though it was their initial mistake in ringing it up incorrectly. read more

Has a meal here since I was overnighting in Conroe for work and it was great. The pineapple on my Cuban sandwich was a surprise but I wasn't upset about it at all. I prefer my Cuban sandwiches pressed and grilled, however the bread was well toasted and made a great meal. Decided to have lunch here again on day 2 and enjoyed a great shrimp Caesar salad. BIG salad and with plenty of Shrimp and well worth the $15 I paid. Would love to have a meal here again. read more

My family and I had breakfast here on Sunday 4/24. We love the food and the outdoor patio was the perfect weather for the kids to watch the planes. My only few complaints were, that my wife's food (pico benedict) was cold and mine (lobster benedict) was slightly warm. The patio could have used a cleaning , it looked like a few children had left a mess on the floor. We did not want to mess with sending anything back so no big deal. Good place for brunch. My husband got the farmer Bob's benedict and it had the best chicken fried steak I have eaten. It was flavorful, tender, and melted in my mouth. My eggs were poached perfectly medium. The grits are real, stone ground yellow and made correctly, but not served after 11 most days. The coffee was strong, rich, and hot. My only complaint is the self serve aspect for drinks, cutlery, and food pick up. That aspect is not ideal for my disabled family members. read more

We are already fans of black walnut. I am also a fan of quiet breakfast and reading the paper while sipping coffee. Great weather to relax on the patio and watch the planes arrive and depart. Staff was super kind and helpful. Beware lots of people bring the kiddos to eat and watch the planes so if your not a fan of munchkins look carefully before you choose your seat. The breakfast and late lunch are good. Everything we've ordered has been great. My only complaint is there's no selection of craft beers or other regular good beers. We're accustomed to eating at the one in the Woodlands which has an excellent selection of craft beers on tap and bottle. Conroe location seems to be a breakfast crowd. Still, it was nice to watch the planes. But I won't be back unless a flight is involved and will wait till I reach the Woodlands and eat at that one for late lunch. read more

A fantastic place to grab breakfast! The facilities that the Cafe' are located in are very nice and new. The restaurant itself has the best view one could ask for! Grab a seat next to the large windows to overlook the airport and watch airplanes land and take off. They also have great out door seating with an unrestricted view. The food itself was great. I will update a review with 5 stars if they will bring back Huevos Mexicanos. It is one of the best breakfast meals of any restaurant in the area. No one at the Black Walnut was able to tell me what happened to it; I had it as recently as Spring 2020. Otherwise this restaurant is excellent - tranquil location with great views of various small planes coming and going, and an excellent unique atmosphere.
